This spot came highly recommended by my friend and their spouse, so I was excited to try it out since I really enjoy Ethiopian food. You know it's a good sign when a restaurant focuses on one thing, and here it's Beyaynetu. The four of us ordered the feast for three, which turned out to be more than enough food. I also got a mango juice, my friend ordered an espris, and their spouse had a hot bunna. While I'm not a coffee drinker, I love the smell of it, and the bunna smelled amazing. The mango juice tasted fresh, like a good puree, but I do wish it had been served over ice because it warmed up quickly and I prefer juice cold. The food came out fairly quickly, and it was incredible. I tried everything and had zero complaints. The injera was outstanding -- tangy, light, and sturdy enough to scoop everything up without falling apart. Every dish was flavorful on its own, but also blended beautifully together. I usually lean toward protein-heavy meals, but this was a vegetarian feast that left me completely satisfied without once wishing for meat. Honestly, I left feeling full and happy, and a little sad that this restaurant isn't closer to me because I'd go all the time if it were. We ended the night with two pieces of baklava, and unfortunately this is where the rating dropped from a 5/5 to a 4/5. The baklava was a big miss. The plate came out swimming in a dark brown syrup, and there was more syrup than pastry. I've only ever had baklava with a clear honey syrup, so this was surprising. The pastry itself was dense and tough to cut into, with no flakiness -- more like one solid block of dough. The filling didn't seem to have pistachios; instead it tasted like raw walnuts mixed with brown sugar. Combined with the heavy syrup, it was far too sweet and overly heavy, which made it unenjoyable. Overall, the feast itself was excellent and something I would happily come back for again and again. But I would skip dessert here, as the baklava was disappointing and felt like an afterthought compared to the quality of the main meal.

First time trying Ethiopian food and I'm glad it was at Bunna Cafe because this place was stellar! Absolutely loved the ambiance, service, and most importantly the food. They start you off with a free plate of popcorn to snack on while you wait for your food which was so fun. Also, I happened to be in during their weekend Bunna Coffee Ceremony so I had a complimentary cup of the Bunna. It was very strong, spiced, and rich, with a prominent ginger undertone. Adding in the brown sugar cubes opened up the flavor so much. Delicious! I tried the Lentil Sambusas which were super crispy. The filling inside was fine but adding on that cilantro lime sauce really tied it all together! There was a subtle spice too that I enjoyed. For my main I went with the Beyaynetu Meal which was the 5 scoop option. I kinda wanted to go for the 7 scoop Feast to try more things but I'm glad I didn't because the 5 scoop was very sizable for one person! I tried the Enguday Tibs, Shiro, Misis Wot, Yater Kik Alicha, and the seasonal option which was an Eggplant and Walnut Deberjan. WOW!!! Everything was so insanely flavorful and worked well with each other. I think my two favorites were the Shiro and the Yater Kik Alicha. Soooooo so so good I could eat a whole bowl of just those.

Feast - can choose 7 options!

We happened to visit between 5-6pm on a Sunday which is when they are doing the coffee ceremony. They usually have this 5-6pm Friday to Sunday. The service is complimentary - the coffee is SOOO good. I love how they add a bit of ginger and there are sugar cubes if you don't like your coffee black. I love bitter and roasted coffee so I was absolutely a fan of what was served. They also serve popcorn as snack on the side. The low lighting ambiance was lovely and peaceful. This place is fully vegetarian so there are no meat options. You can pick different sizes depending on how many entrees you want for the beyaynetu. We picked the "feast" option which comes with 7 entrees of your choice. The portions for each entree is like a small fist size. You can also order the entree a la carte but I personally love beyaynetu because of the variety. Everything was delicious!! There's not one that I disliked. If I had to pick one, shiro was probably my favorite. I highly recommend trying this place out if you've never had Ethiopian food before.

Very first time trying Ethiopian food in Bushwick, Brooklyn! Finally got there around 4pm it was a quiet time- it was so nice and very neat, cozy and warm environment. The menu is so unique I love how it looks! And I enjoy them all that I got in a beautiful plate. 5 kinds is a great deal! I really loved "Gomen" and "Keysit Selata"! Honestly it was a great experience having my hand roll with Injera flatbread. All amazing and kind people! I already want to go back!

SERVICE - located in Brooklyn at the border of east Williamsburg and bushwick in an not as popular neighborhood - quaint interior with dim lighting makes it feel homely and intimate - live music on certain day evenings - walk in only - no wait on a weekend evening though restaurant is quite full - ambiance good for semi casual meal - friendly and attentive service MENU - ethiopian vegetable and lentil stews to be ordered as a platter or a la carte - all vegan/vegetarian - average price ($25 per person) FOOD - feast for 2 (9/10): two scoops of all nine side dishes, perfect for sharing between two people. The thing that stood out to me the most was the difference in flavors between dishes. They varied in levels of spice and warmth which made tasting each one an experience. I would highly recommend getting the dishes in a platter like this to try them and combine ones that you like. The one dish that was a bit of a letdown was the kale. I wish the kale was more cooked or had more seasoning on it as it tasted very raw and bitter compared to everything else. WOULD I GO BACK? Yes! One of the best ethiopian meals I have been to in New York

YUM!!! The mixed platter was so great. Highlights were the beets, the lentils, and the chickpeas/split peas (can't remember what they were). Great vibe inside

First time having Ethiopian food, especially vegan. My experience was nothing short of amazing. The Beyaynetu, was delicious. The injera surprised me, it was slightly acidic and a bit tart, but it paired WELL with all the other sides. I got the $26 Beyaynetu (shared amongst 3 people), except the kale and beets option. This is how vegan food should taste. All the sides had their own flavor profile and even with mixing them, nothing overpowered the other! The sambusa with red lentils, were amazing, crispy skin, the lentils were cooked perfectly, not too hard, not too mushy, had a bite to it. The pepper sauce it came with set it off, a bit of spice as well. Shai correnti (Ethiopian hot toddy) was strong, made me feel nice. The Pushkin was delicious, and the powdered pot on top was so cute! Servers were so nice, the vibe of this place is 10/10. They played Ethiopian music, the decor and book shelves. The lighting. And the place was clean, the bathroom was especially clean. I will be back!

If you love veggies and a meal that will leave you satisfied Bunna is the place to try. They have plenty of of options and flavors to explore. The staff is friendly and helpful with any questions regarding the food and spices. Came here at around 6pm on a Saturday and while there was no wait the only option was to dine at the bar because all tables and outdoor seating were at capacity. Dining at the bar was a nice option because it was still quite spacious and private for your conversations to carry without disturbing others at the bar. They do have a cocktail menu but I do find the prices on the higher end for not much of a strong quality to their drinks, I recommend sticking to a glass of wine which is the better option for your pocket. The feast for two is a great value and will also be good for a party of three as my sister and I had a hard time finishing the entire meal.

Amazing! This was only my second time trying Ethiopian food and I loved it. I really appreciate a veggie forward vegan meal, so this did disappoint. The atmosphere was beautiful and the service was great as well. I'll be back!

Espris - Juice w/ 3 layers (mango, papaya, and avocado)

A vegetarian friend of mine took a few of us here because it's one of his favorite places to order take-out from. I am not vegetarian, but I am also not picky. I eat my veggies and love to try new foods! It was my first time trying Ethiopian food and it just wasn't for me. I got the Beyaynetu "meal" which comes with one scoop of 5 items. It comes with sourdough flatbread called injera and you're supposed to use your hands to rip a piece of the injera and grab the veggies with it. The flavors were unique, but not something that appealed to me that I would like to have often. I am glad I tried it though! I also got the Espris drink which consisted of 3 juices (mango, papaya, and avocado). I was really looking forward to this drink, but it wasn't very sweet and it was not cold at all, no ice or blended ice. I think they just blended the fruits that were sitting out and just poured it in the cup. Staff was nice and place had a lot of seating and it was dimly lit. There is a bathroom in the back and there are 2 sinks outside the bathroom where you can wash your hands before you eat!

Omggg so good. Came here with a group of four for dinner and we got the feast for three (pictured), lentil sambusas, and extra injera. Everything was sooo delicious and flavorful and we totally cleaned our plate. The restaurant also has such a nice ambiance and the staff is lovely! Also super reasonably priced for a ton of filling and yummy food. Highly recommend, and also love their brunch!

Ethiopian food convictions: Bunna Cafe in Brooklyn Different parts of african cuisine are my kryptonite. This place is a heaven sent for vegetarians and vegans and trust me you wont miss the meat. Before anything, try the iced coffee and be there for the coffee ceremony on weekends-- it will change your life. Smooth ethiopian coffee fresh brewed with cardamom-- is insanely good. if you like hibiscus drinks, their kerkede shai is a must. - we had the brunch menu--- their ful (fava beans), alicha yater firfir (split yellow lentil mix), butecha (vegan scrambled eggs), and duba firfir (injera in spicy mix), cashew cream and injera on on the side. Okra stew was also very unique. -if you want the real dinner experience, try the shiro (ground chickpeas), and misir wot-- i nearly cried from how good it was. Their principles are wholesome vegan food that nourishes the soul. You will miss out if you dont go here! This is my second time coming and I'm never bored. Website: https://www.bunnaethiopia.net/e

10/10 one of my favorite Ethiopian places in the city! We got the shared plate for 2 (double of everything) and it was the perfect amount for us! My only gripe was the injera was a little cold/stiff BUT the food was amazing! Will 100% be back for more :)

Unfortunately that meant the bread got the microwave treatment instead of proper defrosting and toasting. If you've ever tried microwaved frozen bread, you know the texture I'm describing. The crispy honey bean (akara) burger itself was quite tasty. The patty had a crispy exterior and creamy bean paste interior, dressed up with vegan cheese, mayo, lettuce, tomato, and pickles. It's a nice alternative for vegetarians who dislike fake meat substitutes. They don't purport the beans taste like anything but beans. The jollof rice completed the meal. It had a rich tomato base with great depth of flavor that made everything feel more substantial. The owner was genuinely sweet about the whole rushed situation, and based on reviews, I know this is the kind of place that shines under normal circumstances. This is primarily a takeout spot with a few high-top tables by the window if you want to eat in. I'd definitely give it another shot during regular operating hours when they're not scrambling to accommodate early birds.

We'd never had Nigerian food but were game to try. We took a bus to a decidedly unglamorous part of town, to a humble storefront with a couple of small outdoor tables. Inside was very small, with just some bar seating by the window and a bench. We were a bit early for the lunch rush, so had the place to ourselves. The nice owner came out to greet us and take our order. The hubby ordered the Classic Akara Burger, which was their signature deep fried honey bean fritter patty on a bun with tomato, lettuce, cucumbers and vegan mayo. It was good but a bit bland. My Oyster Mushroom Wrap with bean fritter pieces and veggies had more zip, courtesy of their Nigerian red sauce, and was quite sizable--I really enjoyed it. It was a very hot day and they had no AC inside (just fans) so we opted to eat at one the outside tables, which turned out to be much cooler and quite pleasant. If you're vegan/vegetarian or just curious about what Nigerian flavors are like, I'd say it's very much worth a try.

If I were a tourist here, it would be on my list under "things to try." Or at least to try once ! I also had 2 vegetarian dishes - the Shiro Wett and the Messir Wett. The Shiro was made with beans. The Mesir was made with lentils. I've had the Shiro and Mesir Watt many times before - both at Ghenet as well as other Ethiopian restaurants (Awash Ethiopian on the upper west side). I think Ghenet has some of the most flavorful dishes in the city. They don't overdo it - just the right amount of spicy hotness. The table we were moved to was right in the middle of the restaurant but by the door and it felt like we were being bumped into all night - as it turns out, the waiter moved us but never did place our appetizer order. So we waited, and waited, and no food came. They even served a table who came in after us! We did find it super strange but figured maybe our food was taking longer? Anyway eventually the waiter realized what happened and came over to take our order for the apps and also our entree (as at this point we had been seated closer to 45 mins). He also offered us each a free drink "on the house" if we wanted as an apology for the wait. Two of the three of us took him up on the offer and ordered two mocktails. As it turns out, at the end of the night when we got the bill, both of these mocktails were added on to our bill, despite what we were told that they'd be "on the house" - my friend ordered a dish to go - which she wanted to take for her mom- and they forgot to add it to the bill or place the order so at the end of the night my friend had to leave empty handed and disappoint her mom who was very excited to try the dish. Overall: The food is phenomenal. The service can be significantly improved.

A few minutes later he came out of the kitchen to tell me that there was not enough okra stew left to form a main dish, but he'd offer whatever was there as a free side dish for me. So I went with his suggestion of Mafe Legumes (vegetables stewed in peanut butter sauce), while husband asked for the Senegalese national dish of Tiebou Jeun (baked fish). For the accompanying starch, I chose Funio, the Western African staple grain (again introduced by this wise old man). We also ordered Nem Legumes - vegetable spring rolls (I'd call them samosas :-)). Husband asked for a ginger drink. The ginger drink tasted like pure ginger juice (sweetened a bit of course) - it would certainly cleanse one's palate and warm one's stomach. The Nem Legumes were nice, but the winner was the stewed tomato dipping sauce that came with them. Our main dishes were served on large dinner plates. The portions were so substantial that I ended up packing half of my stew home, after stuffing myself unusually full already. There were chunks of yam, carrots and cabbage on my plate, flavored in a creamy and well-seasoned peanut butter sauce. But the winner was still the Okra stew - spicy, tangy, tasty. I also stole some Joloff rice off my husband's plate. It was another surprisingly delicious treat! His fish looked like a portion of a big carp, with quite a bit of bones to pick out (we don't mind fish bones, having been well trained in certain Asian cuisines :-)) Our bill, presented by a young waitress, came in a little basked covered by the broad hem of an African lady in a beautiful dress. The old man passed out table and said "oh yes she collects for us." For a meal of one appetizer, two mains, and a drink, the price was super reasonable!

DO NOT EAT HERE! I wish I could give this place 0 stars! I ordered the family deal , Egusi and…read moreginger juice. The food is nasty, undercooked and flavorless! First thing- The family deal states that it feeds a family of 4 (which is a complete lie because it feeds 1 person!) and comes with all of these things. My order was missing the jollof rice, suya, puff puff, and the 2 sides of spinach! Second thing- They lied and said that the fish is Tilapia fish but it is NOT!!! The fish that they used is cheap and nasty Swai fish. It has a completely different taste from Tilapia fish as it is fishy tasting with a really soft soft texture. The "Tilapia " was disgusting! It was flavorless and barely cooked. Third thing- The Egusi was the worst that I ever had in my life! It did not even taste like egusi! There was no maggi, crayfish, or flavors added and it was drenched in palm oil. They also did not cook the Egusi all the way through and it had huge huge chunks in it. Fourth thing- The sauce or "stew" that they put on this fish was also terrible as well! I completely wasted $70 on this restaurant! I would NOT recommend ever buying anything from this restaurant. They lied about the portion size and what came with the meal and the food is gross! I don't know how this restaurant is in operation. I'm not even sure if the people who made this food is Nigerian because none of this food tasted right! DO NOT ORDER FROM HERE! You've been warned!!!! BTW - I threw everything in the trash! Disgusting I made this purchase on Uber

My egusi was 10/10, I would recommend. A big portion of poundo too. Great meal will be going here…read moreagain.
