After moving to Chapel Hill from San Diego I was lamenting the fact that there are no In n' Out's here, but no more. The hamburger I designed at Buns was one of the best hamburgers I've ever had at any kind of restaurant, and I'm excited to go back and have a completely different one. I had the curry mustard dipping sauce and it was amazing. I ended up putting it on the burger itself, it was too good to be a mere dipping sauce. Also, while this may be normal for North Carolina, beware that the iced tea is not plain iced tea... its that sickly sweet "sweet tea" that seems to be every where here. read more

I would give this 4.5 stars if I could, and I'd only dock it the 1/2 star due to the fact that I was so bummed they've gotten rid of the tuna sandwich which I have been totally craving*. When I mentioned this disappointment to the guy at the counter (who was really friendly and I think maybe the owner?) he said they had taken it off the menu ages ago. Once I got used to the idea that I wouldn't be having the tuna, I decided on their grilled salmon and he suggested doing it "veggie style" which was one of the special sandwiches on the chalkboard across from the regular menu. That included avocado, cucumber, alfalfa sprouts, onion, tomato and a garlic tahini sauce. Amazing. Seriously, just, yum. A little messy since the sauce was a bit drippy, but I'm willing to forgive that. Also, got sweet potato fries, they're great (a little soggy on the bottom of the container, but a huge serving!) Try them with the curry mustard. What a great concept! Being able to build your own (delicious) burger, complete with dipping sauces, ensures something for everyone. They have veggie, salmon, angus beef, and turkey burgers. Great little burger place in Chapel Hill just off of Franklin St that needs to make its motto - "Anything you want, you got it" The burgers are very customizable - pick a topping, any topping - avocado, caramelized onions, brie, pickles, jalapenos, American cheese, sprouts... Pluses -- fries are plentiful, cut in house, and excellent. Topping choices are almost overwhelming and in the best possible way (I love brie on my burger). Shakes are really good. The burgers them selves are only pretty good. My son and I have burgers around town a fair bit and I give Al's the slightly higher mark and he gives Buns the higher mark. I've gone here twice: once for a burger (since I'd heard that was their thing, obviously), the second time for a grilled cheese and some fries. The burger was very very very average...definitely not worth the restaurant-level price tag. I got a basic one but still, you can do a lot with a simple burger. The grilled cheese was probably a better value even if it's not exceptional. The reason I'm giving them 4 stars: the fries are EXCELLENT. I went to Buns the very first day they were open. Met the owner who is friendly and often works the counter. I ordered a burger combo. The topping choice are beyond compare, but my burger was dry and the fries were just kind of okay. PTs are much better. This is the best burger place in Chapel Hill hands down. I love eating here. The burgers and veggie burgers are amazing. Moist and juicy with toppings galore that you can customize (think Five Guys only much much better!) This tasty filling comes in a beautiful and tasty bun. Once you taste the bread which is sturdy enough to support any combo of topping you will be hooked. The French fries both regular and sweet potatoes are great. The perfect blend of crispy and soft. Plus they come in big baskets perfect for sharing. Unless your pregnant like me then you eat them all up yourself and don't think twice about it. But the true crowning jewel have got to be the sauces that come with the French fries. The curry sauce is my personal fav and I could bathe in it I like it so much. It is amazing on French fries. Well, for a place called "buns" I was surprised at how marginal the buns actually were. Our family tried the buns for both the hamburgers and hotdogs and thought it tasted stale and more suitable for bread crumbs. Several of us just took the bun off because the fun is really between the buns if you will allow me to be so bold. So even with the lackluster buns I am still a fan of this place because of their veggie burgers. They are just the right denseness, spiciness, consistency and with veggies and ingredients you can see and identify and homemade. I love how you can get up to three patties at once and next time I plan just to go bunless and chow down on the patties with various toppings. I tried one veggie burger topped with lettuce, tomato, ketchup and coleslaw and it was seriously mouthwatering. The tang and sweetness really added to the whole taste. In addition I tried a veggie patty with grilled mushrooms and swiss cheese which was good but I didn't enjoy as much as the first. Although it could be that I was filling up because I had already had one burger. There are so many combinations of toppings you can try and a majority of them are free, making this a really pretty affordable place to have your burger your way. My kids both had the hot dogs and agreed that the ones we make at home taste better. But they liked the fries and ate the hot dogs so at least I know they can find something they like or least like enough here. My husband had a double beef hamburger with a fried egg, pesto mayo and cheddar. I can see him building a Dagwood style burger next time piling on topping after topping. If you hear about this place or are given a recommendation to eat here, keep walking...perhaps towards Al's burger shop. Having just moved to Chapel Hill, I'm eager to try all the local restaurants with "indy" stickers lining their windows. But after the experience I had at Buns, they deserve to have their stickers peeled off immediately. First impressions: dirty. It was dark dingy and the tables were sticky. The perfect trifecta for a college diner. The ordering process is kind of fun, but I'm personally not a fan of the "build-your-own-burger", especially when one of the cheese options is blue cheese. (How does that work? I didn't want to find out). My brioche bun was dry as a desert and my burger was bland. The caramelized onions were overly sweet which overpowered my entire burger. The WORST part of my experience was that our server was on his phone the entire time we were there and even served our food while he was talking loudly on his phone talking about buying cars. I am a bit surprised by all of the rave reviews of Buns. Maybe for college students this place is the holy grail, but if you have a car then I think you can find better food. The burgers seem to be pan fried and lack any type of grilling flavor. I had a cajun-style burger with andouille sausage. The sausage was a nice touch (first time I've had that). At a little under $5, I suppose the burgers are a good value. We also ordered fries with the ranch dressing dipping sauce. The ranch dressing tasted like the pre-made dressings you'd find in the grocery store (the kind with preservatives and a 10 year shelf life). I guess if you like burgers and fries then this place is a better choice than the local fast food chains. read more

Just to repeat what so many people here have said: best veggie burger in the triangle! Its amazing homemade goodness! I usually get mine with goat cheese, caramelized onions, lettuce & tomato. The fries are delicious, but come in huge portions. I recommend splitting them with a friend (it won't save you all that much money since they have a combo deal, but it will save substantially on wasted food). Yum.
