Very racist run shelter, shame on you! Our good friend came to get a kitten on Saturday, they told him adoptions don't start until 12pm. He asked if he could Have priority for the kitten and they said yes (he is African American). THIS IS A KILL SHELTER. I adopted my pitbull/boxer here. The staff at burbank animal shelter said he had 2 more weeks to live. After adopting him I realized he was sick. I called the shelter for help they stated they cant do anything about that. I can bring him back to surrender him so they can put him to sleep. I was looking to adopt a kitten so I showed up to their kitten fair, which had been advertised for weeks on their website. When I arrived the person at the front desk told me the kitten fair had been cancelled. I decided to take a look at the cats they had. They only had three cats available. The first two cats were older and didn't seem too social. The third cat I saw, Sammy, was very energetic and playful. Sammy was a 9 month old black cat that was apparently dropped off by his owner, alongside his siblings. I went to the front desk and asked about the adoption process, which was fairly simple and easy. I spent $115 to adopt him. I changed his name from Sammy to Pluto. Me and Pluto have been together for a month and I'm very happy that I adopted him, although he can be a handful at times. He's extremely curious and loves to cuddle in bed and watch tv with me. read more

This morning the day after Thanksgiving was a true day of thanks! Lastnight our rescue pup Lily got loose and ran off. Sometime last night a kind soul found her at or around the 1100 block of W. Magnolia (we are on N. Pass some few miles west) and took her to the after hours Burbank Shelter who early this morning called to say Lily was safe and sound:) Words cannot express my gratitude, a true day of thanks! In 2014 I adopted my best friend & daughter Pegasus (they named her Indigo) as a 4 month puppy. She was a gorgeous chihuahua staffy mix. Great local animal shelter serving the Burbank area and possibly the Glendale area as well as there does not seem to be a distinct/discernible Glendale animal shelter, while Pasadena has its Humane Society. Located just across the street from the Burbank Walmart and just down the street from the Burbank Costco, it's pretty centrally situated to Burbank, and has plenty of head-in parking spots. I've gone there a few times now to look at and foster dogs. Everyone is very professional, friendly, and eager to assist. If you want to look at the adoptable dogs/cats, you don't need an appointment or anything, just walk through the main doors and into the main lobby and you'll see "paw prints" on the floor that lead you out toward the kennels, I believe it's dogs on the left and cats on the back right. I came to foster a dog and was provided with a sort of orientation in which we chatted about my experience/history with dogs, and with specific breeds of dogs, whether I had a dog currently, and we discussed the dog that I would be fostering and whether it would fit in with the space I had available. Eventually I took home a dog for a few weeks and was provided everything I needed, including, but not limited to: dry and canned dog food, a leash, a harness, a dog bed, poop bags, treats, and some toys. All of the staff seem to know every dog and have really positive relationships with the animals and each other. Would recommend. read more

Came to a kitten fair they were having I had my toddler with me I was interested in certain cat they kept leaning more towards other cats as if they didn't want me adopting her.I left the cat and said Il call back tomorrow if I still want her Il prepare and come back for her, they said if she doesn't get adopted she'll be there. The next day I had decided I wanted the cat I called asked and if they can look up the animal Id number, if she was still there? was the same lady sounded annoyed. she said I remember you yup shes adopted but in a sarcastic rude tone and was just laughing. she got adopted I get it it was my fault for not adopting on the spot it was the attitude on the phone that was wrong. I tried to give this shelter another chance in keeping my options open to a different cat. I went in told them I was looking to adopt I got a different staff member he was nice attitude wise but kept post poning us, they had me wait about an hour or more, They let other families go into the interaction room but when it was my family's turn they did not offer the interaction room to us. They didn't let us hold the cat, didn't really feel like a bond was there with the cat led to us not adopting. I do not recommend this shelter. My husband also asked for a dogs information on his way out, front desk didn't really give description. Cute animals, I will say some staff are nice some are not so welcoming, just my perspective but I think they should be open to knowing there all different types of families that will come in with children. read more

I went to this Shelter to adopt a little dog. This was probably my 4th shelter in the LA area, and this one is by far The Best Shelter. The people who work there are all very professional and kind. The shelter is kept unbelievably clean! When you walk back to view the dogs available the kennels are clean & no horrible smells. They even have Water Mists throughout the kennels to help keep the dogs cool. There is a very nice, clean large area covered with shade tarps for allowing a meet and greet. I couldn't give a better review. I highly recommend this shelter to all who are looking for the love of their life! read more

Upon arrival after entering the building, the staff do not acknowledge you, extremely unfriendly to the point of being rude and unprofessional! Not a Hello, Welcome, nothing! Not to be a braggy Burbanker, but the BAS is absolutely a hit. Well-cared for dogs and cats for adoption and that's only the half of it. Rabbits, turtles and even chickens all ready for good homes (i.e., yours). Of particular note is the awesome Kitten Foster program, one of the few in LA. Kittens do not live at the shelter; they are fostered in volunteers' homes and, if necessary, bottle and hand-fed by some incredible volunteers. They bring their kittens to regular Kitten Fairs at the shelter, and can share all kinds of info with you about their fosters. All pets are micro-chipped and spayed/neutered right at the BAS. All pets available for adoption can be viewed on the BAS website, which might not be a bad way to start, as there will be plenty of heart-melters to greet you on any given day. All animal shelters have a hint of sadness about them, and Burbank's is no exception (heartbreaking notes on each cage tell the tale -- "owner abandoned," "owner evicted and can't keep," "stray found in Vons parking lot," etc.), but the pets here, particularly the dogs and cats, seem well-cared for and ready for ... you? Tip - upon entering the shelter, the uniformed "officers" you see can be a bit gruff. They are. In addition to staffing the shelter for adoption purposes, they also have other tasks which, I guess, bring other challenges. Just breeze past them and look for a BAS volunteer -- they'll match you with the perfect pet. A hit! read more

We were turned away when we came to drop off 2 kittens that my girlfriend and I found. We were not aware that they only service the Burbank area and were told that we, "drove all the way over here for nothing". We were there with our dog who bonded with the kittens throughout the week and a half we had them and the woman at the front desk seemed irked that we had brought him with us. We left pretty disappointed knowing that the people there don't seem to even like animals and probably don't do more than they need to for the animals that people are taking there in hopes that they have a second chance at a good life. I adopted Rosie years ago and I just wanted to say that all it took was for me to walk in. It was a beautiful day and she knew deep inside her heart that we were soul mates. She got so excited when we made eye contact. The volunteer took her out of the kennel and she jumped onto my lap and gave me a nice kiss. It was love at first sight. Unconditional love is hard to find. Adopting an animal comes with work, but it's worth every happy loving minute as these animals will pour their hearts out for you. If an animal seems timid at first, they will open up once they start to trust you. Rosie blossomed like a beautiful red Rose. I'm one of those individuals who like animals more than I like people. People? Nah, I'll pass. Animals? Yes! That one and that one and this one and that one over there, please! The amount of homeless animals is heartbreaking to me and sometimes I wish I could purchase a farm and live with hundreds of animals. Oh wait... that's a zoo. Anyway, I digress. I've been a huge supporter (and donator) to the Burbank Animal Shelter for 8 years. Aside from donating, I follow them on Facebook, I recommend them to anyone and everyone searching for a pet, and I like to visit them. So what are the ins-and-outs of the shelter? The Burbank Animal Shelter is a no-kill shelter (YAY!!!!!) located on Victory Place mere steps from the Empire Shopping Center. The facility is somewhat small if you are expecting some grandiose enclosure but there is a little, free parking lot. Upon walking in, you will be greeted by a receptionist in a small lobby area. Head down the hall (these are all admin and maintenance offices), through the door, and the next building houses the dogs and then through another door to the cats. There is also a park/play area where volunteers constantly play with the pups, hoses, water pools, etc. Now, you may be a little deterred at first when you see the dogs behind iron bars and the sparse 'cages' BUT they are actually large, clean, with pet beds and toys, AND have an open back that they can go out for some sun (and again... they spend more time more in the play area with volunteers than in these enclosures). The cats are in glass boxes with cat towers and of course you aren't supposed to put fingers in cages (booo!!! I wish I could climb in and cuddle with EVERY animal!). The cool thing? You can roam the animals at leisure. There aren't hovering employees standing over you like the animals are gold. Each cage has thorough information concerning the animal such as intake date, health status, personality description, etc. The immediate standout factor about the Burbank Animal Shelter is that they literally accept any animal. I've seen: chickens, pigs, bunnies, hamsters, guinea pigs, and of course the standard dogs and cats. Age isn't an issue and they also have plenty of kittens in foster care. In fact, the Burbank Shelter constantly has adoption fairs and their Facebook regularly posts photos daily of both shelter and foster pets ready for adoption (and updates on the shelter alumni who have found their fur-ever homes). The shelter genuinely cares about the animals with top-of-the-line volunteers (there is literally a wait list to volunteer here) and a group of volunteers who take the dogs hiking in the Verdugo Mountains about once a week. This place rocks! If looking to donate, aside from monetary values, the Burbank Animal Shelter accepts basically anything (they will sift through it) such as unopened pet food, treats, blankets, toys, litter, etc. There are two large plastic bins immediately in the lobby available for drop-off. The only issue is that they don't give a receipt for your tax deductions (perhaps they do for cash donations -- I've only donated physical goods so I am unsure). I will give you some advice: the animals at this shelter are VERY happy (as happy as they can be in a shelter) and cared for. The photos and videos posted on Facebook are always so joyous and the staff truly loves each animal. HOWEVER, if you are an animal lover like myself, you will want to kill yourself because of the heartbreak that some animals are homeless. As happy as they animals are, of course they ALL run to you and bark and meow when they see you and do cute things. They KNOW they aren't in a home and they want to go home with you! I'm tearing up writing about this. Moving on... I haven't adopted from here so I can't vouch for the ease of the process but I know from Facebook that they have a straight-forward process, affordable prices (which include shots and a microchip), and regular fairs and events where the prices are lower. Bottom line: this no-kill shelter is awesome and a great place to check and keep a tab on when looking for a new pet to bring home. If nothing else, donate to them or visit their easy-access Burbank location. But please people... ADOPT FROM A SHELTER!!!! read more

I am so utterly disappointed with my experience with this organization. A very sweet but sick cat crawled up into our gated front porch and sat herself down on our door mat. Not knowing what to do with her, I reached out to people on Nextdoor and a few people said take her to the Burbank Animal Shelter to have her scanned for a chip because she had a collar but no tag and coyotes are known to be in our area now more than ever. When I called to see if they scan for chips -- after calling our go to vet and being notified they don't scan for chips -- my call was taken by a man that said I needed to make an appt. for a chip scan. I brought the poor baby at the allotted time of 1PM and was greeted by an woman officer. First she accused me of not having her in a carrier because she might run off and it's a busy traffic area (totally understandable!) BUT without knowing the cats circumstance of not being 100% stable and very weak she was pretty accusatory. She then proceeded to take the cat away and another woman came out who was VERY sweet and understanding and seemed to be a volunteer. She asked me if it was my cat and I explained the situation to her to which she seemed surprised because she was told by the officer that I was abandoning the cat and there to adopt another cat. Firstly, what a sh*tty thing to presume. Secondly, I had an appt. for a chip scan. Honestly, the entire drop-off process seemed very rushed and they told me to call the next day to find out if the cat was chipped, her age, and health, etc. I called the next day to find out she was not in good shape at all and they would be euthanizing her after an 8 day hold if an owner didn't step forward. Again they asked me if this was my cat. Was then told to call and talk to the vet, Dr. Howe. Called the following day, spoke to the vet and she was super defensive from the get-go. Maybe my communication skills aren't top notch but she REALLY needs to have some bedside manners when dealing with the public, people's beloved pets and stray animals. She then continued to go into the cat's diagnosis of kidney failure and a heart murmur. She said they were keeping her comfortable but after the blood tests and the blood transfusions, she didn't want to spend any more money on her. After that conversation I worked to find an end of life organization that would keep her comfortable, warm and safe during her transition but none stepped up. Just placed a call to the vet today (May 25) to find out if I could be there when they euthanized her and was told that they would check and get back to me. I said If that wasn't possible, I would pick her up and take her to our go to vet where they were very gracious in allowing me that honor. Again they asked if she was my cat. I received a called a bit later and was told (over speaker phone!) I wouldn't be able to take her to our vet where I could sit with her during her last moments because it would be too stressful for the cat -- Our go to vet is only 1 mile away. They did offer the opportunity (making an exception for me) to see her prior but I had only two hours to do so and on a work day. PLEASE all, if you are thinking of taking a stray cat, your fur baby or any other animal to this facility, please, please think again and look for better options out there.
