I don't know how anyone has the heart to dump animals. All I know is whoever dumped this guy here is their loss, our gain. Thanks to the front desk for all the help, and making this whole process easy. To whoever abandoned him and left his at the shelter to possibly die, he's in great hands now. And happy if it matters. I would definitely recommend you stopping by to save a life.

Made multiple calls towards a dog left in the rain who had seemed to have been abandoned by their owner. The dog was tied down to a fence and unable to escape as it was left cold and hungry. After waiting for hours nobody came, I called again and they said they would send somebody to come pick the dog up but still, again nobody came. I made another call, and was met with a lady who was being rude and un profesional, I unfortunately couldn't get her name but she claimed nobody had made any calls about the dog. If you're looking to help any other animals, don't come to call his place. They do not care.

Supposedly there was 2 callers ahead of me, and still no answer..... they hang up the phone. It's SO SAD they don't care to answer the phone when there's people on the other genuinely interested in adopting!

The volunteers and employees love the animals, as a city shelter they don't have the option to turn away owner turn ins. They have limited space. Sadly yes this means sometimes dogs and cats are killed. They don't like it either but until people stop letting pet have litters and stop turning in pets they have no choice! I adopted Kizzy 2019. She's love of my life though thinks she's a dog! All pets are adopted for life and cuttlefish and snuggled. Shelter workers and volunteers are patient and help guide people to pets that match their activity.

Great place to adopt. Back in 2009 I adopted a Siamese kitten, and it lived up to 14 years. After his passing I was soo heartbroken. Now 3 1/2 years ago, I adopted a 4 month Russian Blue, and last year in August I also adopted a 3 year old Chartreux. I love them both. I hope to one day I can also adopt a dog, it breaks my heart to hear them crying when I come by this shelter. All animals need Love and a home to live in :-(

My Akita Shepherd baby Hannah and I are Palisades Fire runaways. I would like to thank and give my deep appreciation for all the wonderful people at the East Valley Animal shelter, that treated us with so much sweetness and compassion and love while getting FEMA approved supplies for us. You guys were absolutely wonderful to her and to me and ohh so generous, all the food, toys, snacks treats and supplies are great! I keep in my heart the way we were received at this place, it brings tears to my eyes to feel such goodness specially in these difficult fire times! Thank you!

What an absolute waste of a day.

Wasted my whole day got me attached to a dog to tell me that a rescue got her after I waited 3 hrs +. This is the second time they have done this to me. Unorganized waste of government funds

We adopted our new fur baby this week from here - props to all the WONDERFUL volunteers here who passionately advocate for all the sweet animals who need a home! The LA shelters do the best they can given that they are at 200% capacity - folks, always adopt from the shelter!! There are so many babies who need homes right now!

These poor animals in the "care" of this facility. There is so much bureaucracy that they make it IMPOSSIBLE to adopt an animal, meanwhile they complain about being over crowded. I found a dog that I wanted to meet through the LA Animal Services website. I drove to the East Valley location and as soon as I walked in, there he was, front and center in a glass walled room with 2 other dogs. Pushed out front and on display for everyone to see as they enter the facility. A very nice older lady who was a volunteer came up and offered assistance. When I said that I'd like to meet the dog, another woman appeared to say that he was not available to meet and that they are "considering" making him rescue only. So I said, while you're considering that, how about I meet him to see how things go. She said there were behavior issues (previous bite history?) with the dog, but then I pointed to the card on the window that clearly said "OK" in the box by the word behavior. I explained that I understand but would still like to sit with the dog and see how he does. I know the dogs are stressed out and to give them space and time, not to get too close. I've owned pets and have fostered for rescue organizations. Then a completely rude man named Mario was called out, some kind of supervisor. He continued with the previous word game of "considering" making him rescue only and then snidely added that he can process him for adoption for me to take him home without having the opportunity to meet him first. At an impasse, I left. Now that I'm home and checked again on the website, that sweet dog is still listed as available for adoption. What a farce

Please adopt from here!! Not only do they have TONS of sweet dogs needing good homes, but the volunteers are also AMAZING! We adopted our girl, who has been an angel, and the volunteers still reach out to check on how everything is going. They are always there to help with questions/advice. They care so much and only want to help the families and dogs have a good life. We loved this shelter and the people so much we are going to start fostering/volunteering. Thank you for giving us the best new member of the family!

I wish I could give this shelter 5,000 stars. In December, a friend organized a toy drive called "Santa Paws" and decided to make East Valley the beneficiary. The goal was to get some extra love for shelter dogs and feature their personalities on social media so people could get a better feel for some of the dogs outside of their cages. I was hesitant to participate as I was scared the shelter would break my heart, and it did, but it also brought me so much joy. I was nervous of the overall state of things and had pretty negative preconceived notions about a city shelter- I had no clue what we'd be walking into. My concerns couldn't have been more misguided. This shelter is BEAUTIFUL and clean. The animals are very well cared for. But above all, the people who work here are angels on earth. In the short time we spent there, we saw heart breaking pet surrenders, extremely difficult people and situations, and the staff and volunteers handled everything beautifully. (Anyone who has commented about animals being in cages in their own feces doesn't seem to understand that this shelter is over 3x capacity. There are only so many hours in a day to take care of that many animals. This is NOT a reflection of the staff, but rather the citizens of Los Angeles.) I want to commend everyone who works at this shelter, either as a city employee or a volunteer- THANK YOU for keeping the animals of our city safe when even their own "families" won't. Veronica, Goldie, Christine, Sergio, Cherri and Christian are just a few of the amazing humans who wound up helping me pick out a foster dog which- in only 7 days- ultimately led to the adoption of our newest family member, Kiara. We love her so much. On days when you (staff) feel like you can't imagine carrying on, please know how grateful I am that you all made it possible for this little dog to be in my life. If you're not sure if you're ready to adopt, consider volunteering or fostering through this facility. It has been an extremely rewarding experience.

Got my baby here! Volunteers helped me on their instagram and I went in on a weekday. It seems like the workers deal with a lot of angry people, considering the way I saw people treat them there. It's not an easy job, bless them. Shelter dogs usually need some extra love and training but always end up being such a gift

Ask the Community - East Valley Animal Services

Do you need to have COVID vaccine in order to view adoptable animals?

Yes. I made the trip over today and they wouldn't let me in without proof of vaccine or if I went and got a 30 min. test at a pharmacy. Absolutely ridiculous. It's not on their website.

    Is this a kill shelter?

    Yes.

Is this shelter open and allow walk-ins or go by appointment only?

Both. Check their website for open and appointment hours.

Do they take dog toy donations?

    Yes they do!

Quiero dejar ami perro tiene 8 meses es un pastor alemán mis niños no lo quieren lo puedo dejar?

    Llámalos mañana 888-452-7381

Is this a no kill shelter?

Take it with a grain of salt, but all LA owned animal shelters are no kill, with the caveat that no kill really translates to a 90% save rate. As far as I know, East Valley falls under this category of no kill

You want to rescue them all but you can't. All you can do is spread some love around the cages and, if the stars align, get to take a new family member home. They do what they can at this City of LA shelter in Chatsworth. It's totally overbooked with dogs who would much rather be lounging on your rug at home. By some crazy coincidence, someone had turned in a Korean Jindo, which was the breed I had in mind. Our amazing attendant got "James" out of the cage and into one of the large meet-and-greet areas. While it's tough to bond with 50 other dogs barking their heads off, I knew it was a match. All dogs must be neutered/spayed before they can leave the animal shelter. Because James had already been fixed, there was nothing to do but pay the fee and invite him into the Lambo. At this time (February 2026), fees are halved to reduce overcrowding, so my total cost for James, including being up to date on rabies and all vaccines and micro-chipping, was $51. What I like a lot is that the shelter provides you with detailed notes taken by staff and volunteers who have interacted with your pet. Though James had only been at the shelter for about five weeks, there were plenty of comments (friendly, warms up after a few minutes, not a barker) which gave me some extra confidence. Check out the shelter for your new family member soon!

I had a very unpleasant experience at this animal shelter and I feel the supervisor Troy handled…read morethe situation in a very unprofessional way. About two weeks ago I took in a large dog because the previous owner was going to take him to the shelter and I felt bad for the dog. I wanted to try to keep him, but after keeping him for a short time I noticed the dog was becoming aggressive toward my wife and my kids. I have small children at home and I cannot take risks when it comes to their safety, so I decided the responsible thing to do was to bring the dog to the shelter since I could not keep him and I could not find anyone who could safely take him. When I arrived, the supervisor Troy came outside and immediately had a rude attitude. Instead of trying to help, she started questioning me in a way that felt more like an interrogation than a normal conversation. She kept asking why I had my wife's ID with me, how the dog knows me, and why I was bringing the dog there. I understand staff may need to ask questions, but the way she spoke was disrespectful and unnecessary. I explained that I live in the 91344 area and that the dog was not safe around my family, but she kept arguing and acting like I was doing something wrong. In the end, she refused to take the dog, which made no sense to me because this is exactly what animal shelters are for. People come there when they cannot safely keep an animal. What bothered me the most is that she is a supervisor. If a supervisor behaves this way, it gives a very bad impression of the whole place. People who come to a shelter are already stressed, and the staff should treat them with respect, not attitude. I tried to do the right thing by bringing the dog to the shelter instead of abandoning him somewhere, and I left feeling frustrated and disappointed. This was not the kind of experience I expected from a city animal shelter. I hope management looks into this, because situations like this should be handled much more professionally

However, we've run into the same issue multiple times, and it's become frustrating. Whenever a new group of kittens arrives, it seems that staff members are able to claim or adopt them before customers even have a chance to view them or express interest. We've experienced this on more than one occasion, and it leaves us feeling like customers aren't being given a fair opportunity to adopt some of the animals that come in. I understand that employees may also want to adopt pets, but when customers are actively looking to adopt, it doesn't seem fair for staff to have first access while they're working. In my opinion, this is a policy issue that should be addressed to ensure everyone has an equal chance to adopt. Unfortunately, since I am only looking for small to small-medium sized dogs there wasn't a match for me yet. But it was so great to see the row of dogs held in this warmly heated section of the center who all had mini lifted cot like beds to rest on instead of having to lay on the cold floor. The facility was so clean, well-maintained, and heated, providing a comfortable environment for the animals, who were kept safe and warm inside this wonderful non-profit, no-kill center.
