This is a NASTY location I am a father of 4 beautiful daughters that have always enrolled in After School Program and always had a beautiful time, and I have always enjoyed the experience of watching and listening to them perform. But this year has been a horrible experience for my youngest daughter, I know the teachers are signed up to teach but if they can't handle the pressure just don't do it. My youngest was told to her face and all her band members that they "SUCK" and "don't even know if they should be able to perform". These are kindergarten students learning to perform.. I want people to know if they bring their children here always watch and listen to them and what is being told to them. I will make sure everyone know about this spot. The teachers are good and kindly, but one of the owners is very touchy and will not treat the kids well at all if she's in the slightest of a bad mood. And seeing that is a huge turn off in a school. UPDATE: Owner messaged me thinking that my review is bias because I was a contractor at the school. I would like everyone to know that my opinion/ view of the school is not determined by work experiences. What I saw may have been during work hours, but regardless if I worked there or not my view is still valid. Even if the owner thinks otherwise because I do not have children of my own or was only a contractor. I had the privilage of being a vocal/piano teacher with Burbank Music Academy from 2008-2012 before moving to New York City the end of 2012. I can not begin to tell you how wonderful BMA is! Ed and Laura Wynne KNOW what they are doing! They throughly check each teacher and verify their skills. The teachers at BMA are also working professionals so you are not only getting a highly qualified teacher but one who can teach a student what happens in the "real world" of music! Another huge plus is that Laura assess the personality of the student and matches them with the best teacher. You child is in great hands! The summer programs are the BEST! Students get group and individual instruction and by the end of the program are in a fully functioning band! If you have never seen this transformation you will be AMAZED!!! You child will blossom and grow as a band member and with his/her individual talent! As a teacher you are surrounded by supportive co-workers who also work as a team to build up one another. Being a pianist I had always wanted to take guitar. Alan Bailey was AWESOME at teaching me the basics of guitar and making it fun in the process! Not only did I learn to play, but he helped me understand the differences in the chord structure of piano verses guitar. As a songwriter this was (and still is) invaluable! There are several places for music lessons available in the San Fernando Valley. I cannot comment on the nature of other similar businesses in the area, but BMA has a top notch facility with reinforced sound rooms (especially good for drum lessons) a fully rigged performance stage and full backline for the kids to rehearse with. Each lesson room is outfitted with good working equipment and the facility is kept in great condition considering the amount of kid traffic going through the doors. The teachers at BMA are made up of professional studio and touring musicians with a history in the music business. At BMA a culture of music education is in place which gives the students the essential rudiments necessary to become great musicians. The students learn to read music notation, theory, rhythmic principles and musicianship from highly skilled professionals. The kids aren't limited to "rock academics" (is that even a thing?) They can learn jazz, blues, pop, RnB, whatever they wish because the material is presented in a way which can apply to any musical style. Only music education takes place here, which is why this is rightly called an "academy" That being said, there is a fun summer camp and Arts outreach programs in place that allow novice players who just want to jam to try it out. Once they get into lessons, that's where the true molding begins. -I am a teacher here at Burbank Music Academy. I have between 50-60 students a week and a high student retention rate due to the nature of how BMA conducts its business. read more

My 13 yo daughter has been a violin student with "Mr. Wolfie" for maybe three months now. She came in with no experience with violin but some in other instruments. She's now working on a simple Vivaldi piece she loved from the Little Einsteins show when she was a toddler. Her teacher is terrific with her. He speaks with her and not at her. She values his instruction and he makes her feel okay about the learning process instead of pressuring her. We work together on cultivating her love of music so that makes me feel good about my choice to bring her here. This summer she had a sub for several weeks. That worked out amazing as well and she didn't miss a beat in progressing musically. When her regular teacher returned she had improved on her technical skills. I'm not saying this place will turn any kid into a musician but it is a nurturing environment, which is more important than becoming a rock star in my opinion. From what I've observed all the teachers are passionate about what they do and enthusiastic with the kids. I have seen other teachers elsewhere go thru the motions of teaching with no soul but that's not this place. Thanks BMA and WT for helping me make my kid a better human. :) read more

My son just finished three weeks of their Summer Band Camp and he had a blast. He had always somewhat enjoyed playing guitar, but finally getting the chance to incorporate it with playing in a BAND has really changed his attitude toward music. The owner Laura was awesome on so many levels. They also offered very affordable add on aftercare for days when I needed to pick him up a little later which was sooooo helpful. If your child is on the fence about continuing to play his or her instrument I'd strongly suggest signing them up for this camp--it will most likely help them and you make up your mind about continuing their music career. read more

Our 1st experience was camp, and my now 8 year old son had a great time. (We loved the performance!) Then he started drum lessons with Voyce whom my son always looks forward to seeing. (Went virtual for a year due to Covid.) Now my kid is doing a Jam session and he loves it. My kid can go here not knowing anyone and still have a blast. This school is a gem. No Mozarts in our family, but my kid is getting into music because of his positive experiences here. My 5-year-old just did one week of the Winter Camp and each day I picked her up and asked, "How was it?" She'd say, "It was the best day ever," which is a reflection on the awesome staff and supportive students who made her four days at Burbank Music Academy so memorable. Even though she was one of the youngest kids, the older ones treated her well, and the experience of playing with a band to a packed room today has her completely hooked. The minute we left after the performance she said to me, "I want to do that again . . . immediately," and has repeated that sentiment all night since. Many thanks to all involved for making her feel so welcomed, especially 10-year-old guitarist Jackson, who made it a point to come up to me after to tell her that she did great all week. On that note, we really appreciated that she had the opportunity to collaborate with kids of all ages and skill levels. I feel there is the potential for more social and musical development in that kind of environment versus being kept in groups that are more homogenous, which is often the case in educational environments. Both my sons, ages 7 and 5, attend BMA for piano lessons, and I am one of their adult students, learning bass. My sons are both enjoying their lessons, motivated to practice and proud of their skill. I hope when they get older, they will show interest in joining the band match-making scene that the school promotes and continue to foster the motivation to hone their skills with other kids. For myself, I find the teachers are fantastic, skilled musicians (Even when you get a substitute! It seems like everybody there can play any instrument you put them in front of, which is pretty awesome) and sometimes we'll find ourselves just jamming for the entire lesson, which certainly makes me feel like more than just another student. (And lets face it, how many outlets does a parent of 2 with a full time job get to jam? right?) From the start, I've felt welcomed, and the owner quickly establishes an rapport with the kids and parents after a few lessons. My son has started his third straight year of learning his instrument, and his progress has been amazing. He is learning how to play several styles of music, music theory, sight reading of music notes, ear training, correct fingering, and how to compose his own music. My son has accomplished all of this at a very young age because of the amazing teaching staff at BMA. He has also participated for two years in BMA's school fundraising concert series, whereby BMA teachers donate their time to teach over a hundred kids at his school how to play music over the course of several weeks, culminating in a fun concert they get to perform with their band, which raises money for his school. TERRIBLE TEACHER AND WORSE CUSTOMER SERVICE!! My 11 year old daughter wouldn't go back for trumpet lessons after having a lesson with Nathan, who was confusing and rude. I have a few examples but I will list just one: He told her that something she was doing was wrong and to do it again. Then when she was confused and tried to correct what was "wrong" and did it again, he said, "Just kidding, you did it right the first time." So then my daughter didn't know which was true so after her lesson, looked it up on YouTube because she didn't trust what he was telling her. My daughter is a beginning student. She hasn't been playing long enough to know what is right or wrong! And she is 11. She needs guidance and instruction not fake negative feedback and passive aggressive "joking". After I asked the school for a different teacher and explained why, I got no response except that they were "looking into it." I never heard back. I pre-paid for 7 lessons but we only used one, so I asked that if they couldn't find a new teacher for my daughter, that they please just refund the remainder of the money and we would look for lessons elsewhere. I got NO RESPONSE. I asked again a week later and again got NO RESPONSE. Thus, I am writing this review to warn others. I would give this school zero stars but they did make it fairly easy to rent a trumpet, which I also paid in advance for 3 months. We have since found a fantastic new teacher elsewhere. read more

This place is truly as good as it gets when it come to private music education. O only have great things to say about the people that work here. There has been a lot of negative stuff going around here about the owner but I feel that its wrong. She is very kind and helpful and as is the rest of the staff. In terms of teaching all the teachers are highly knowledgeable about all the styles of music and music theory as well as the physical playing of the instrument. I came to BMA looking for a guitar teacher and I got one. I've been studying with him since November of 2011. Only great things to say. Learning guitar has been an excellent experience and I plan to continue on that path. My brother who is 6 now plays piano with another great teacher. BMA was recommended to us by other parents whose children have enjoyed success there. Our 6-year old son had no prior experience with music when he attended their summer music camp. I will say that overall he had a positive experience, which is testament to the quality of the instructors. My son had the opportunity to play with a band on a stage, and although is part was simple, he felt great being part of it. Unfortunately, the woman who runs the program was a real negative. Some of the students had been there all summer or take lessons there on a regular basis, so it is understandable that she would greet them warmly for a new session. My kid was a little nervous, as were several other kids who were new to the place and to music. She made no effort to make them feel comfortable and at ease. They sat there, nervous and virtually ignored. Just an acknowledgment or a few words would have made all the difference. As someone who has been a teacher and worked with kids for many years, I understand the importance of making all your students feel comfortable and welcome, especially in a new environment. This was not our experience here. On top of that, my wife approached her with a question, and this woman was kurt and rude and flew off to hang with the "cool kids." Before my son's band played, she introduced each band member, but totally skipped over my son. There were 5 children in the band! He noticed, but came up with a reason for why she would do that that made him feel better about it. This is a school and some of the kids are very young. Perhaps she is preparing them for the real world of the music industry, but to me it was just cold and unprofessional. As I said, in the end, his experience was quite positive, which is amazing given the attitude of the woman who runs the camp. I just feel that giving high fives and bantering with the kids that have been around for a while and ignoring the new kids who might need a little encoragement and support is bad teaching and bad business. Luckily, my son does want to continue to learn music, but we will most likely look elsewhere for lessons. read more

Burbank Music Academy is the reason that my son is such an amazing guitar player. I am so very grateful to Laura and Ed, the owners/operators, for giving my son the absolute best music education one could ever imagine at such a young age. He not only learned how to play guitar, but he learned music theory, sight reading, and was picking Paganini's Caprice by the time he was 14! The space is beautiful and inviting, the equipment is state-of-the-art, the teachers are not only amazingly talented, but completely dedicated to all of the students that take lessons from them. The recitals are beautiful, and the showcases are breathtaking. There are so many music students that BMA nurtures through their 'awkward' phase into their 'amazingly talented' phase,that it's incredible! They have many celebrity students that get their music training there, but they would never tout that. BMA is a family of amazingly talented, dedicated people who are completely altruistic. Laura's 'baby' is something called "Rockin' for the Arts" or RFTA. She brings kids from local schools into BMA and pays her teachers to form bands with these kids and teach them a song on various instruments (over 6 weeks time). She brings a stage, lights, and a sound system over to the school, and lets the kids perform on stage, allowing them to feel like rock stars for a night. All of the money raised at the event goes toward the arts education program. Laura takes nothing...it's all about being a part of keeping the music alive in the community. I feel extremely fortunate to be a part of the BMA family, and I truly hope they keep doing what they do, because it's a phenomenal gift to the kids, their families, and the community. read more

I can not say enough nice things about BMA! My son was interested in music and playing an instrument but not till a bass was placed into his hands by Dan at one of the summer camps (one of the amazing instructors at BMA) was he thoroughly entranced! He has been playing the electric bass for about three years taking lessons with Phil Romo (another amazing teacher!!) and for the past year has been playing the double bass. At BMA he takes private lessons for his bass and has been placed into several rock bands throughout the years. Being in a rock band year round is also a fantastic feature of BMA's program. Not only do they get to take lessons on their instrument they also get to perform with a band and get to perform at venues around the Burbank area. This feature I feel, truly adds to their love of music and their desire to practice. If you are alone on your instrument practicing, great, but if you are also held accountable to your bandmates it adds another level of motivation. Each band has a coach that works with them for the entire hour. We have been honored to have David Kidd. Amazing musician and fantastic coach! Wonderful program!!!! Now because of all the instruction that my son has received at BMA, he has started high school already ready to be in Advanced Band, Jazz Band, and Pep band. He had to audition for each of these bands and it is unusual for freshman to be in them. As far as the other comment about the owner not being nice to the students this has not been my experience at all!!!! We have been going to BMA for about three years and I have sat in that waiting room for many many hours and I see her greet each and every kid with a big hello, a smile and many times a big hug.
