Burge Bird Services - AKA Dr. Burge (the bird doctor) is the best avian vet I have come across in my 40 years of life as a bird owner. I can't say enough good things about her, or her practice. And I am terrified of the fact that there are so many vet offices out there who don't know anything about birds, yet people are still taking their birds TO a regular vet. Seeing an avian vet (in my opinion) is mandatory. Juile Burge & Nurse Julie are all about birds. They don't stop for one minute to do anything other than care for, find homes for, look after, treat, groom, educate, offer charity work, and LOVE birds. This is what Burge Bird Services is about. It is a place you can take your feathered friend for grooming, health issues, as well as if you need education in regards to parrot behavioral issues. Owning a bird is a huge responsibility, & something that requires a lot of knowledge that someone like Dr. Burge can provide. Her prices are reasonable, & she offers boarding as well as doing everything she can to help place rescued birds in forever homes. My four feathered friends consider Burge Bird Services their "vacation resort" when we go out of town. I feel like they enjoy their visits there as much as we are enjoying our trip. I had to take my blue crown conure to Dr. Julia after she was injured at a different vet clinic. I was most impressed over her compassion, knowledge, quality of technicians and our visit, overall. DR. Julia is a true avian vet, with a heart of pure gold. We have been to see her on two other occasions, still regarding my birds care, and with each visit, I gained more and more trust and respect. I have never used an avian vet before. I have had budgies and cockatiels, but they all lived long healthy lives without any illness. A few months ago I got a little conure, and a couple of days ago she started not acting right. We started an online search for avian vets yesterday, and called for an appointment this morning. Dr. Burge is obviously devoted to birds. Half the building is taken up by a rescue area. I watched her calmly do things to my bird that I was sure would cause shrieks of birdie rage and lots of biting attempts ( even though the bird was securely and humanely controlled by the nurse). Dr. Burge explained everything she wanted to do clearly, and pointed out some things tp improve upon with my bird's home care. I had been holding my breath a little, but the prices were VERY reasonable for a specialist vet! I will definitely be returning to Burge Bird Services for all my conure's veterinary needs! read more

I'm going to preface this upsetting story by saying Dr. Burge works tirelessly to rescue and care for birds. It's her life's work. I know she cares about birds. She has cared for mine for the last few years. But my last experience with her was nightmarish. My beloved Pete the cockatiel was sick. He presented with diarrhea and no other symptoms. He was still vocal and active, whistling away in his carrier on the ride to see Dr Burge. They got us right in and before swabbing Pete to check for infection, the Dr. looked him over once and immediately started clipping his nails (NOT something I requested or wanted her to do) which led to bleeding. Every single time she has ever clipped his nails, she has made him bleed. Without fail. Every. Single. Time. This time she didn't have her powder ready to put on his bleeding nails, so she quickly handed him off to her assistant while she got it out of the cabinet. She put some on his nails and continued trimming. The bleeding didn't stop and there was blood all over her fingers. He lost too much blood, but the doc didn't say a word. Once she finally got the bleeding stopped, she then proceeded to dig in his nostrils to clear them (something else I didn't ask for, nor wanted her to do. I believe these procedures escalated Pete's illness and death). After she was done, only then did she swab his mouth and poop to look at it under the microscope. She diagnosed him with a severe bacterial infection, gave him a shot and medicine to put in his water, warned us he could have an underlying condition causing such infection and told us if he wasn't better in 24-48 hours, to bring him back in and then sent us on our way. After we left there, Pete never made another vocalization and less than 12 hours later, he was dead. Upon getting him home and inspecting him, I discovered his nostrils were now very red and swollen and his right one had dried blood in it. His feet had turned purple and cold. What had she done to my bird? He began acting as if he had a terrible respiratory issue, sneezing and wheezing, trying to breath through his mouth. He DID NOT have a respiratory issue when we took him. His feet hurt and he could no longer perch and spent the rest of his life at the bottom of his cage. He was puffed up and quiet and wheezing and not the bird I took in earlier that day. He hooked his beak on the side of the cage in an effort to hold his head up and this is the position in which he died. He suffered tremendously from this vet visit and I'll never forgive myself for allowing all of this to happen to him. *and I KNOW birds can hide illness. I KNOW Pete was really sick, but he wasn't having respiratory issues and he was still very active and vocal. His possible "underlying issues" had nothing to do with the untimely escalation of his death in my opinion. He was sick and old and needed gentleness of care, but instead he was poked and prodded and made to bleed and suffer. It all went very wrong. read more

It is astounding how much Dr. Julie Burge knows about birds! No matter how unusual or rare the condition, she figures it out and treats the patient with expertise and compassion. RUDEST vet I have ever been to. Yelled at her techs, slamming doors, we were an imposition to her and had taken up too much of her time. Made my daughter cry because she was so mean to her bird. Do NOT ever waste you time with this vet. No compassion and not good with birds. I would give no stars but that was not an option. read more
