I've never made a negative post like this before as I believe that life is too short to get upset about this kind of stuff. That said, if I had seen a review like this I certainly would have made a different choice. I contracted in January with Burge to install a new fence and paid them half the price at that time. The installation was scheduled to start the first week in April. They contacted me in late March to tell me that the materials were on the way and they would be starting on time. I arrange my schedule accordingly as I thought it would be good for me to be there when they did the install. When it came time to start they told me that the materials were in town but they could not get to the truck to have them unloaded which delayed the start by a few days. After a few days they notified me that the installation will once again be delayed because they forgot to mark the property for utilities. When they finally started the installation there were at least five times when the crew said they would be there and did not show up at all. This included leaving my old fence piled up in my yard for several days. This was without any communication whatsoever. The job was further delayed by incorrect measurements for the gates that were to be installed and when they did deliver the gates they didn't work. During this entire process I tried to talk to the owner of the company to discuss the issues, but he continually ignored my messages. The final product is fine, not great. No fence is going to be perfect. The end product would have been acceptable but for the awful customer service. The communication was terrible and there were numerous days well I was wondering whether they would show up or not. I kept him updated every step with my frustration and gave them a chance to make it right when it came to the final invoice. They offered a very low and unacceptable accommodation. I told him it was unacceptable and that I would pay the full invoice and proceed as an unhappy customer. I am sure there are other fence companies who can install a similar quality fence with much better customer service. I have texts, emails and photos to support all of this. Not sure what happened but Chris Burge split off and formed his own company, Chris Burge Fence, 913-244-6423. I was a little nervous given the recent reviews of Burge but they had the product I was needing, they had the best timeline by far (we were desperate to get it up!), and price was still competitive. Chris was great to work with. We had several bumps with our HOA but Chris was patient and worked through it with us. Really nice guy and finished product looks great. Give him a try! read more

Absolutely HORRIBLE company! Do not hire! We hired them to put up a steel fence. The sales person, Chris Burge, promised the gate would go up on Friday and the custom gates would go in the following Tuesday. They didn't come on Tuesday so I called on Wednesday with no response from him. Called again on Thursday. No response. Called again on Friday and finally spoke with another gentleman bc the rude receptionist wasn't there to send me to voicemail or take a message. He finally said the gates were going in later that day. They finally were installed then they called me immediately to get payment. They wouldn't call me back for days the minute it's installed they call for the payment. Then a week later I requested an estimate for another gate. I agreed on the price and asked when it would be installed. This was August 1st. I have emailed and call d them 4 times since then to figure out when they would come and install the gate. I mean seriously I am giving them mor business. I still haven't heard back. And once again the receptionist was absolutely rude and didn't get me called back yesterday. To my friends in the Kansas City Metro, please do not hire Tom Burges Fence & Iron, Inc. for any fence work without reviewing this first. Due to storm damage to my privacy fence, I needed to replace two fence post and straighten eight others. I also wanted to install a small iron fence around my garden. I turned to users of the Nextdoor app for recommendations, and I have been very disappointed in my selection. Please be very careful with who you recommend. In March 2018, I had Michael Burge of "Tom Burge Fence & Iron, Inc." visit my property and follow up with an estimate. The estimate was for $1,995.00. This estimate included all taxes. So my final invoice should have been for the same amount. I understand that complications can arise and the final bill might differ from the estimate. However, I was not made aware on any complications. I received an invoice for $2095. This was $100 higher than the estimate, and no explanation was provided. I was already angry that I had to contact the company over-and-over to finally get them to send someone to do the work. It took three months and I had to have them come out twice to finish the job. When they finally did show up, it was on a day I was having another company perform maintenance on my sprinkler system. It turns out I could only have that company perform a back-flow inspection. I will have to wait until the fall to have them adjust the sprinkler heads (something that I am in desperate need of). On that first visit, the broken fence post were fixed, but only five of the eight leaning fence post were straightened. They did install the iron fence around my garden, but not as instructed. I had instructed them to install one wall of the fence on the South side of my existing patio entry. They put it on the North. I also told them that the other wall of the fence was to run parallel to my privacy fence and then turn slightly at the end to tie into an existing fence post. They just ran the fence straight to the post. So now, since the corner of the fence does not make an exact 90 degree turn, I will have difficulties installing square patio pavers around the edge of the garden. They also did not install the iron gate. I assumed they were waiting for the fence post to set and would be out the following day to finish the job. That assumption was wrong. After that, they sent me a bill for the job that was not finished. It took more that four calls to get them to finish straightening the remaining fence post, and install a gate on the iron fence. For all these reasons, I strongly suggest avoid hiring this company. read more

I wish I had an option for negative stars. Gave a bid in June. Set up install for July. That week in July, I heard nothing, so I started calling. No one could find my paperwork. We were not on the schedule and they couldn't find anything about my bid. Finally, talked to an owner who sounded very impressive over the phone, and sent someone out right away. They scheduled me the following week. Forgot to show up~~ "mix up at the office" pushed me back again....this was only the beginning. Called the owner again~ he said he had to leave...was in a rush...promised to call before 8 am the next day. Never heard from him again. The list goes on and on. A complete joke. These people will not call you, they will not follow up, they are completely disorganized and it apparently starts at the top. read more

This is a unique Yelp review for me because I actually never paid for or received any product or services from Burge Fence; however, I'm rating my overall experience with Burge as one star and based on the other reviews, it seems pretty obvious that rating is justified. I contacted Burge about a fence project a few months ago. I had not looked at any online reviews at that point. Their response time was actually pretty good and I was able to schedule an on-site visit for measurements within about 10 days from the initial call. Once the measurements were taken, a formal quote was generated within another week. I got quotes from a few other companies and Burge was actually the cheapest by a few hundred dollars for my project. With the three quotes in hand, I thought my decision was made with going with Burge. I called them and asked what I needed to do to get the project started. I was told to call the office, get half of the cost paid up front, and then we could get scheduled. The way this was described to me left me with an unsettling feeling and that's when I started to search for online reviews. The Yelp reviews in themselves were tough to read because they were consistent in their content and it was after reading the reviews, I decided to go with a different company. That would have been the end of the story, but about four weeks later, I came home and noticed the utility markers painted all over our yard and then a week after that received a call out of nowhere at 8:00am from Burge saying "we're going to go ahead and get started today...are you available?" I was taken back because there was never any commitment to this project, no papers or contracts signed, and no communication in about four weeks with them. Based on another review, it seems they will start work on something without any communication so be aware of this. There are a few positive reviews, but the similar tone in the negative reviews is extremely consistent so just be aware. read more

Didn't ask if I wanted to reschedule and basically hung up on me. When I emailed the company to complain last Friday morning I still haven't gotten an email back. Tom Burge fence company left an entire gate out of our fence and the stain they used is flaking off, it didn't penetrate into the wood. We have a $14,000 fence that wasn't what we paid for and is deteriorating because of the inferior product used or incorrect applicstionFor almost two years they have been promising to do the work. I have had to hire an attorney and they still did not take care of this. We are oN our way to small claims court. This is the second fence we purchased from this company. Since the owner turned it over to his kids it's really taken a turn for the worse. 6ft privacy fence installed 4 yrs ago today. 4 of their "lifetime" pressure-treated posts rotted out and parts of fence collapsed after the posts snapped. Called to see that they could do and told me too bad its out of warranty. Had to do all the repair work myself. Dug up the old posts, they were wet, soft and had insects in them. Called them several times to try to work something out or get a sales person on the line. Their front office hides the owners from facing the customer and dealing with issues or receiving feedback, so I have no other option than voicing my feedback on here...I will never recommend nor will i personally do business with these crooks. We contacted Burge Fence in April when due to their poor workmanship, our fence was collapsing into the neighbor's yard for the third or fourth time since the fence was put in less than 4 years ago. We have two large Great Danes who are very docile, but the neighbor has a small dog, and we didn't want them to meet. We called at least once a week for two months, sent pictures, and were completely blown off by most of the employees. We understood that COVID would delay things, but we were not taken seriously. We had to work with our neighbor twice during this time to build a makeshift post to hold the fence from collapsing into their yard. They never confirmed that they were actually coming, but had us pay a hefty deposit. One day I went outside to see that someone ad come into our yard without first ringing the doorbell or contacting us in any way, and they sprayed with spray paint where electric, gas, and water lines were. Remember, we have TWO GREAT DANES who are generally in the fenced yard. Thankfully they were inside at the time, but after horror stories about people killing Great Danes because of their size, I was very angry. Finally a week later they came and fixed the fence, only needing to replace one post instead of the three we were quoted, and a few boards. The hefty deposit should have more than covered it, but we were sent another bill for the remainder with no amount change from the original bill. Please do yourself a favor and DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY! We would have considered elsewhere if they had not been the ones to build it in the first place (as required by our neighborhood HOA). read more

We purchased a cedar fence from Burge Fence about 8 years ago. When it was purchased, we were told the fence would last 15-20 years and was treated to prevent wood rot and pest infestation. Back in December, we were told by Evergy at least 6 of the posts were beginning to rot. We found this out when their subcontractors damaged portions of the fence. I contacted Burge to have them come out to inspect the posts and to quote replacing them. Despite being told the fence would last 15-20 years, Michael Burge stated the fence was not warrantied. There isn't a water problem on our property, so in my opinion the posts were not properly treated, were not properly installed (e.g. aggregate placed under the posts before pouring in concrete), or the wood was inferior. Despite the previous problems, I decided to go ahead and give them another chance since they were the ones to originally install the fence. Michael agreed to have his team apply Creo Coat to the posts to reduce the chances from this occurring again. I had to remind Michael to send the quotes and wrong quotes were sent Finally, the right quote was sent and I obtained in writing they would apply Creo Coat to the posts.The first day, they dug for 5 posts. I contacted Michael by e-mail and stated 7 were quoted. I didn't hear back. When they came to install, they showed up with 5 posts and none were treated with Creo Coat. I called Michael. He didn't remember the agreement and I had to refer him to the e-mail. He stated he would come out to treat them prior to putting them in the ground. Michael showed up at the residence about an hour later, and he said he found 2 more posts that needed to be replaced for a total of 7. I had to remind him he quoted for 7 posts. About a month after the installation, it occurred to me that it was strange to paint the posts without allowing them 24 hours to dry. So I looked up the Creo Coat instructions. Sure enough, the directions require 2 coats, each drying 24 hours apart. I was livid. I sent Michael a letter by e-mail demanding the posts be reinstalled or I would be filing an AG and BBB report. I gave him a deadline. He didn't respond. So, I filed. I alerted Michael. The following day, without an appointment, he came banging on my front door, assuming for a confrontation. I didn't answer the door and stated by e-mail I wanted everything in writing. I then began also interacting with their CEO, Dan Madasz Sr. The AG recommended small claims court. I discussed the problem with Amex and they suggested I dispute the charge. Only when I disputed the charge and sent them a copy of it, showing the funds would be frozen from their account, did they agreed to replace the posts and properly apply the Creo Coat in writing, done by Dan. That was the beginning of March. I have e-mailed Dan 4x since then regarding when the utilities are scheduled for markup and the installation date. I haven't heard back from him regarding installation. American Express resolved the dispute in my favor. In the last e-mail, I told Dan the case was resolved in my favor and stated I would happily repay them when the posts are done correctly. I haven't heard back. I shouldn't have to badger them to get them to follow through on their word. My bad, I shouldn't have rehired them. I also had problems with the original installation. read more

I called twice to inquire if someone would show up and 2 hours later I got a call from Jeff Burge saying he would come by sometimes and leave me a bid. As off today I have not received a bid or a phone call. What a horrible customer service. The two star rating at Burge fence is very well deserved. The work quality is poor and the materials are all sub par. Several of the sections of our fence looked used and are missing final paint. They hit our sprinkler system several times, which I understand once, but they just kept breaking through the same pipe, then poured concrete down the hold which filled several sections of the remaining PVC pipe.... which cost us $1000 to repair. Once the fence was installed, never heard from them again, even after several phone calls and emails. Take the money and run. Would never do business with this company again. read more

They do not believe they are providing a service...it's more like they think they are doing you a favor. It doesn't make sense that they handle their business this way. We had to call multiple times to get any information and don't believe them when they say theyll call you back. Ours was a small railing job... $600...not much for them but alot for us. We expected to get what we ordered. We didn't. They were supposed to call before installing. They didn't. I would not recommend this company. If I could give negative stars I would. We requested a piece of fence be replaced at one of our properties (not more than 10ft in length). We received a bid and approved the building of the fence. It is now over a month and the only thing that has been done is cement poured for posts. We have tried speaking directly to the sales person with NO luck and NO response. I have neighbors complaining that trash is blowing into their yards because the fence is gone and angry tenants because without the fence the parking lot is not as secure. To add insult to injury--WE RECEIVED AN INVOICE FOR THE WORK THAT HASN'T BEEN DONE! If we don't get results we may resort to contacting Call For Action. Had a 6 foot privacy fence installed this spring. They used several defective boards that I simply did not notice until mowing season came around. I have called 3 times and all three times they state they will send someone out to fix it. That was 3-4 months ago. I'd change my review if they would simply follow through and do what they said they were going to do. As of now I'd say their customer service is amongst what I'd expect out of most contractors. Just my personal experience: I attempted to call and schedule a fence repair (after already receiving a quote) and I left daily voicemails expressing concern our dog kept escaping through the broken fence. No one called me for over two weeks and our dog finally got loose one evening through the broken fence and went missing for an entire night. I was pretty frustrated with their lack of concern. Their responsiveness is insanely slow. And I'd have to say their customer is very poor. I would recommend trying someone else if you'd like something done in a timely fashion. Took awhile to get completed as landscaping, weather, etc all contributed to the delays but very happy with finished product. Was also refreshing to work with a company that did the work exactly as bid with no surprises at the end except for enhancements they did at no cost. I paid Burge Fence my deposit in April 2021 being told it would take approximately 4-6 weeks for install. After waiting the full 6 weeks I had to contact the agent Jason for an ETA and was told I was still a month out. With no other communication an installer showed up approx. a week later to tell me they couldn't install as my property wasn't surveyed. I called Jason at Burge and told him I wasn't aware I was responsible to have this done, he told me he just assumed I knew my property line.. This is not something a person just knows and paying a company over 6k for a fence I would think they would have better communication.. A few days later they had a surveyor come out and mark my property. I emailed Jason and asked for a new ETA and asked if they obtained a permit from my city as well to do the install.. I waiting a week with no response and then started calling the office and leaving more messages.. Jason responded he wasn't aware our property required a permit and was waiting for that to come through.. The fence was finally installed 11.5 weeks after my initial deposit, multiple phone calls and delays from this company.. The communication and professionalism is just horrible.. I would recommend ANYONE looking for a fence to not use this company. Pay a little more and go with a company you can depend on , because this is not the one. read more

This is the second privacy fence I've had Burge install. I went back to Burge when we built our new home because I was so satisfied with my old fence. I actually had a huge Bradford Pear tree split in half and fall on the fence. It was extremely heavy but only made the fence slightly tilt. Once we cleaned all of that up the wind broke the other part of the tree, which fell on another portion of the fence. Same result tilted, but didn't give. The fence is straight as an arrow now and you'd never know that anything had happened. On our new house we needed 380 feet of fencing with 3 gates. They completed it within one week of putting all the posts in. Jeff was even so great that he sent a crew over on a Sunday (we had moved in on Saturday) and they put up a temporary chain link fence so that we could let our dogs out. I'm shocked at the negative reviews because we have had nothing but total satisfaction and service way above expectations. Thank you Jeff Burge and your excellent crew!! read more

I can't for the life of me believe this company is still in business. When I tell you they have absolutely zero customer service it is not an exaggeration. We installed a new Burge fence 8 years ago. We were told it would last 15 years. Nevertheless, we called Burge out to get an estimate on replacing the panels and gate that have now rotted and are falling over or to just replace the entire fence. Jeff Burge came out to our house and then... crickets. I have called. I have emailed. I have called and emailed again. It was an easy and quick meeting when Jeff was at our house. We used Burge Fence to build our fence, and they were very responsive on providing quotes and the final product looks good. However, once they got paid, their customer service has not been good. They ruptured my neighbors sprinkler line and would not accept responsibility and I had to reimburse my neighbor for damages. Now the latch that they installed is broken, and instead of taking ownership of the lock that they installed, they told me that I need to contact the manufacturer on my own and deal with getting it replaced. Not the kind of service I would expect after paying $15k for a fence a few years ago. read more

We had Chris come out and give us a quote on June 6th. We decided to go with Burge fence and were to have our fence installed on July 7th. We were told it would be a one day project. On July 7th nobody from Burge Fence showed up so I finally called. The young lady was confused and couldn't find me on the schedule. Then they called back and told me that the utility companies were backed up. The utility companies would have had plenty of time had they been notified but Burge Fence completely dropped the ball and didn't schedule it. Then they said they would be there the 8th but sent a text saying they weren't going to come until July 11th. Chris didn't do a good job at all of communicating. I don't mind delays due to weather (that is out of our control), but I do mind when people aren't honest about a job. When I called to pay the invoice I told them I would like a discount for the delays and not being on the schedule and the nice young woman said she would have Chris call me. That didn't happen and my invoice was due so I called back and another lady answered the phone and wasn't so nice and said that they didn't offer discounts due to the weather. I explained it wasn't delayed due to weather and told her the whole story and she admitted the utility company wasn't called until the day they were originally supposed to install but still nothing. So I paid the invoice and told her I would be writing a review of my experience. read more

I contacted 3 other fence companies and requested bids, but the earliest anyone could get to us was 3 weeks or more. I then tried Burge Fence when we moved to our new house out south. We have a dog and 2 young kids so it was important to get a fence in ASAP. Chris Burge had it done a week after we moved into the new house, workers were very friendly and when our dog found a spot to dig and get out, Chris personally came out and looked at it and is now putting extenders on that portion of the fence/gate for us. I contacted four fence contractors to price getting a fence installed on my property. Burge was the last to get back to me, in fact I was just about to give the job to another company. Chris Burge came to my home measured for the fence and gave me options and enough information to make an informed choice on what would be the best product for me, he also gave me the best price of the four fence companies that bid the job. I was told my install would be three weeks out and 20 days later my fence was installed. I recommend Burge Fence. I have had many contractors work on my homes over many years, Burge stands out for their professionalism. The Burge installers were polite and professional. They arrived with everything needed to do the job. In less than eight hours they had installed over 400 feet of American made steel fencing. The gates took several days longer but were also installed in good working condition. I have no regrets and would use them again in a heartbeat. read more
