We walked in and were seated at 7:55. After we'd filled up our plates, we were informed that the buffet closed a 8 pm, but they'd leave the food out until 8:15. This would've been good to know before we were seated and served ourself. The food was lukewarm, dry, and disappointing. The staff is AMAZING. That was the only positive aspect of our experience. Have visited AJ's many time and it appears their standards are falling. Service is very good and the attention to customer is superior. However, the food has shown a decline in the last several visits. I ordered a ribeye steak with baked potato and salad. Salad was fine and quite good. The steak was ordered medium and was well done. It resembled more of round steak rather than a ribeye. The baked potato was warm at best. This is more than a "One Off." for the prices that are being charged in today's market, you'd expect much better. The ambiance was below average. They placed us at a table in the bar area which doesn't encourage any privacy. I truly hope AJ's steps up their game. We had the opportunity when friends were in town and an 80's group was playing in the Casino, so we decided to start the evening with dinner at AJ's Steakhouse then attend the concert. While we had to walk around an escalator that was out of service, the entrance area of AJ's and the initial impression was quite positive (see pictures). The place was clean, modern and lively - giving off a classy aura. Once we were seated at our table, we were a little disappointed with the wobbly table and the delay in receiving our drinks - but the drinks were solid. My wife had the Grande Margarita (see picture) and I went with the Smoked Old Fashion (see picture) - both of which were very good and the prices were reasonable. The food and service though is where AJ's fell well short of my expectations for a place like this with so much promise. After waiting some time for our meals, our server stopped out to tell us that our meals would be delayed due to a large group ahead of us. This seemed a bit surprising, as we didn't see any large groups in the restaurant, but what could we do? At one point after waiting over 30 minutes, I suggested to our server that "the manager will probably comp us a drink or dessert given the wait"...which received nothing more than a dismissive "maybe" and didn't seem to be taken seriously. Once our food was finally delivered, we were again left disappointed. My wife ordered the Top Sirloin (see picture) and I ordered the Salmon (see picture). While she ordered medium rare, the initial cut into the Top Sirloin was medium well and dry. A manager did come around to ask how things were, so we were open about it being overdone (other cuts later were closer to rare, so it was very inconsistent relative to other steaks at other steakhouses). She offered to exchange it, but given how long we had waited for our meal and the concert starting soon, we declined the offer. Again, given this situation and the fact that it was shared with the manager, we assumed a minimum of a complimentary dessert or a coupon to return another day...but received nothing. As for the Salmon (see picture) it was cooked well - very soft and juicy...but almost zero flavor. A convenient stop at the casino with a classy first impression, but the food and service leave me unable to recommend AJ's Steakhouse. I would NEVER come back. Took 45min to get a drink!!! We rented the party room. 19 of us! So we understand!!! But 45min!!! And the. Food is 2 hours. We asked for our check when the food was served. We had to ask the manager twice for the check after this. It took 50 minutes for the check and then the manager came, did not apologize said it was our fault for doing separate checks. No one told us we were not suppose to do this. I would never recommend this place to anyone!!! The management is terrible! No accountability whatsoever. Made reservations for 2 for Mother's Day at AJ's Steakhouse. We arrived 5 minutes early, seated right away. It was beautiful. The server refilled before we were even empty. Stuffed mushrooms were devine, smothered in mozzarella. Dinner rolls, I love rye and there was one in the basket. Lucky me. Side salads were fantastic, not just iceberg. The real green leaves. Arriving for our reservation we were promptly greeted and seated and told who our server would be. Although it was prime dinner time, it was busy but not over crowded. Tables were clean and comfortable. Our server was prompt, friendly and knowledgeable about the menu and specials. We opted for onion rings and the NY strip special. Service was timed appropriately and not under or over bearing. The onion rings had a good flavor but were overcooked and cool. The main course was cooked to our liking with nice presentation. It's top notch. Attentive yet unobtrusive. Our server knew what we wanted before we even knew we wanted it. More bread magically appeared, water was refilled, we didn't have to ask for a thing. We always feel very well taken care of. Ok, the food, OMG, the food. Over the years, I'm pretty sure my hubby and I have tried everything. Please remember when going here, you're going to a steakhouse, a place known for steaks, do with that what you will. Tonight we both ordered the Filet de Burgo. Literally melted in our mouths. Wow. What a horrible experience for a steakhouse. I get it that there are mistakes in the kitchen, but twice? The first was ordered medium rare. It came almost well done. The second, upon receipt seemed to be ok on the first cut but after a bite or two, it was raw. The seasoning on the 1st was non-existent. The 2nd one was heavy salt. As well, my wife ordered a wedge. She got a full head of lettuce cut in quarters and a pile of old bacon on top of it. She asked for medallions of beef and they came out looking like they were days old. On the service, she seemed annoyed when we arrived and then offered mediocre service at best. When I sent the steak back, she never apologized. The manager brought the new one back and the mashed potatoes were microwaved and scalding hot from the inside. For the price,, this place should just close vs waiting on a slow death by poor service and product. It's a shame. I won't get the time nor money back, however, I know never to go back. Found out later they can smoke the old fashioned but I didn't know. Next time. Steak was cooked to my liking but the pile of raw carrots was not needed as filler. i'm amazed that this restaurant wasn't busier. We went on a Wednesday night and well there were tables occupied. There were plenty of tables available. Let's just start with the cocktails. We had a old fashion, and then our second order at the suggestion of the waitress we had a smoky old fashion $12 that's not bad in a restaurant that you would consider to be high end if you asked me. That smoky old fashion was probably one of the best I've had in a very long. The special of the evening was prime rib, and we were all tempted to order it. The price of the rib included a salad, which was delicious, and with the prime rib, came a baked potato, and a perfect Lee El Dente vegetable. We splurged and shared the crème brûlée for dessert. It was very reasonably priced if you ask me after eating in quite a few restaurants in the area, this one was reasonably priced. I would highly recommend eating here. read more

I looked forward to a great meal on Christmas Day. I got anything but! The lobster bisque was served cold, before I could even eat half they dropped my filet mignon on the table. And then they tried to take my soup on another pass through and I wasn't done. I ordered my filet medium and it was brought out raw. The outside was grey but the rest was red/blue. They server said she couldn't tell "she couldn't put her finger in it" (WTH) and she didn't have a thermometer. What good would a thermometer be? It had already set on the table while I was eating my soup. I was showing her with my knife how spongy and raw the steak was. She offered to take it back, which I have never done in my life but I agreed. I also paid extra for crab and Bernese sauce which the first time it wasn't served. They brought back out the same steak, a different cold potato with a teaspoon of crab and Bernese sauce but no onion this time. They must of scraped it off and threw it away. This time the steak came out crusty black burnt and still bright red in the middle. I thought maybe I was being a little difficult so I had my adult daughter try it. She spit it out in the napkin. The server had no care if I was made happy for the amount I was paying. How can a steakhouse ruin a steak so badly! "But how is the baked potato?" Was her response. So cold that the butter wouldn't melt. I asked for the desert to go, I was nauseated from what I had already tried. She dropped off the check and never came back. I had urgent business to take care of across the hallway so I went up to the front desk to pay so I could leave. They said they couldn't help me and had to get me server. I had my credit card in my hand and she came flying up there "where is your card?" What I stopped at the front desk with the bill and credit card in my hand so I could dine and dash??? Maybe care for your tables, we waited for a while for her to come back before we went to the front. I know why their prices are so high too, we were sat by the kitchen even though there was only 3 tables being used. They were constantly dropping dishes and them shattering. And I also got to listen a conversation right behind me of a server arguing with her supervisor that she wasn't going to take that table that was just seated in her section. So tacky. So finally we got things settled and I tipped way to high for the crappy service. Remember they served me steak that was inedible twice. I only had a small bite the rest went to the garbage, I wouldn't even take it home to my dogs. There was no care on how I enjoyed my meal I couldn't eat. Bill settled and I went across the hallway to the restroom with urgent matters trying not to throw up. I am not exaggerating. I was physically ill with cold sweats. I had my daughter go to the gift shop to buy me a bottle of water. I was sick the rest of the night and our reservation was at 2:30. You could never get me to go back there. The smell of cigarette smoke added so much to the meal too. $160 for inedible food. My daughter had the salmon and it was cool but edible. I decided to give AJ's a 2 star review however previous to my last two visits I would have given in it a 4. This is because of their recent menu changes. I'm at prairie meadows quite a bit and because I don't care for the buffet I tend to eat at AJ's. It used to always be a place I knew I could get several different things I liked at a fairly reasonable price. Unfortunately their new menu leaves much to be desired and the experiences I've had with the food preparation has not been good. First I'll address the steak- as they are supposed to be a steak house. Later I'll talk about the rest of the meal and the menu. AJ's recently changed their menu to offer all usda prime beef, which sounds like a great thing. Their prices went up by quite a bit because of this but I figured it'd be worth it with the better tasting beef. I'll be honest, I don't think I'm going to order steak here again. Since the menu change I ordered the same thing, the handcut ribeye. The first time I ordered it I ordered it exactly as I normally do "on the rare side of medium rare. I want it a warm red." This is actually how medium rare is supposed to be but I know in the past if I just say medium rare I get medium to medium well. The manager came out and made a big deal that I didn't need to do that so last night I ordered it medium rare - it came out VERY medium. I sent back the steak and a different manager came out and apologized. They remade it and once again it was over cooked. They were going to remake it but the manager came out and asked me to relook because she thought it was actually right just the "grizzle" and lighting made it look over. I looked at the part and it really looked like a medium steak to me but at this point I needed to leave and I ate it. Previous to that the manager said she wasn't going to charge regardless if I ate it or not but when the bill came I was still charged. It is worth noting I told her it wasn't what I was after & I just hated the waste, but when someone says you won't be charged and then you are it's a bit alarming. She was very nice and talked to us quite a bit about the changes on the menu and what we thought, which I appreciated. This manager always takes very good care of us. Overall I won't be ordering steak there again. The time before last my steak was perfect but the other in my party had a steak that was not evenly cut and therefore unevenly cooked. Last night I had 2 overcooked steaks and even if the one was right I don't feel like it should be so grizzly that it makes the steak was white. Yes prime meat has grizzle and fat but it should not be the majority of the steak. They have also changed their sides and again I don't feel for the better. The first time I had the balsamic asparagus & the second time the garlic green beans. Both were a $2 up charge because they now only offer potato sides with the meal. They used to always have a vegetable and rice option without the charge. The asparagus were not good. They weren't cut well and the woody ends were left on on some of them. They were too small to be grilled and the balsamic didn't add anything. The green beans were fine - better portion size but not worth the cost. The small candied carrot that they give as a garnish is actually really tasty and I want them to add it on the menu as a side. The wedge salad is much smaller and they no longer chop the walnuts which makes it hard to eat. The crab cake appetizer , which my dining partner ordered as their main meal were much changed. They are apparently now fried in meatball type balls and come with different sauces. Their opinion and mine is that they were extremely dry and lacked flavor. A fail on all levels. The menu has also removed their chicken piccata as well as their chicken wellington . They no longer have their prime rib every day - only on Friday's and Saturday's which I try to avoid due to the crowds. Will I be back? Probably. I'm hoping maybe I can find something else to eat that will live up to their former glory. I can tell you it won't be a steak. read more

We visited on a Sunday evening since we we're staying in the Prairie Meadows hotel. We were seated promptly and advised of tonight's specials by the host. I was very pleased to hear Beef Stroganoff was one of the specials so that was an easy choice for me. My wife decided on the filet and garlic mashed potatoes. We started with salads which were fresh and chilled plenty of dressing served on the side. The filet was properly cooked and very tender as you would expect served alongside a huge order of mashed potatoes. The beef stroganoff was also a large order with tender beef and lots of mushrooms. Order the French onion soup and it was so salty you could not eat it. Two of us got the filet mignon medium and it arrive covered in pepper and well done. The filet tasted like roast beef and extremely dry that I had to spit it out in the bathroom. Garlic smashed potatoes was ok. Writing this review as I sit in front of the toilet saying goodbye to this meal again. We did inform and show our server the food and she did offer to remake it which we declined but we did get a full bill no discounts for the bad food. To add to my review. This is from an email when I requested my two queast to critique our dinner at AJ's.ALL three of us were over charged! Re the dinner at AJ's. Mike says that, for the price point, it was the worst steak he's ever had. If it had been a $5 special from HyVee, it would have been dreadful, he said. The steak fries were bleah. For me, the lobster bisque was too salty (not as salty as it tasted to you, but still quite salty). The asparagus was good, but the filet was not as tender as I expect filet mignon to be. My biggest problem was the service. At a high end restaurant, there is absolutely no excuse for diners to be stacking dirty dishes on their table and for the wait staff not to be taking them away promptly. I couldn't believe that, in a market that includes Fleming's, where the wait staff come around frequently to clear dishes and brush crumbs off the table, we had a pile of used dishes on the corner of our table until very nearly the end of the meal. For the money, I would not return. The manager has reached out to me.....but I am sure it will NOT make up for the money they SUCKED out of my wallet.....and gave me $#@& in return.I really should have just called the police instead of paying the bill. But with my experience with the local police....nothing would have been done...I will report back. read more

I know it's in Iowa, but that's not far, Vegas. You can do it! Because you seriously need to come and taste what an Iowa steakhouse (in a casino) can do for about half the price. Let me tell you that the warmth of this restaurant from the ambiance and the people will have you thinking you're actually in Vegas and not Iowa. Beautiful white table cloths, candles and attentive service, and that doesn't even include the food! So, let me get started on that! First course was a delicious french onion soup with warm bread twists and soft, sweet butter. Then came a shrimp cocktail with prawns of substantial size and a mix of cocktail sauce and horseradish that had just the right bite. Next came the main course. I had the surf and turf, but subbed the small steak for a bone-in ribeye ($6 more - what??). It came with lobster mac and cheese and green beans and was divine! The steak was seasoned and cooked so perfectly that it rivaled almost anything I've ever had. The lobster mac was a little dry and curly macaroni was used, but it was still pretty freaking good! The service was really great. Friendly, friendly people, never had to wait for anything. Food came out really quickly and was really one of the most perfect meals I've had in a long, long time. It's been a few years since I've eaten at AJ's and this will be the last. We're not gambling people, so the Casino is a hassle (and the valet parking was closed). Drinks weren't bad, but when I ordered a second (from the same server, I got a different drink. Bar service was very slow, so it wasn't worth sending back. The onion rings, cavatelli, fried shrimp, focaccia, and pretzel breads were good. The wedge salad was a small HEAD of iceberg lettuce with the top quarter sliced off and the dressing and toppings sort of heaped on top; very difficult to eat. The beef stroganoff was made with quality ingredients and cooked perfectly, but was inedibly salty. The mashed potato side was cool (had to be sent back). The cinnamon raisin bread was not good. I recently dined at AJ's Steakhouse during a business trip. The atmosphere was nice, classy, clean. It was busy as it was a weekend night. We had to wait but were finally seated. Our server was nice and professional. We ordered the onion rings which we were told they ran out?? Over AN HOUR LATER we finally got our entrees. I had originally ordered the prime rib. No prime rib either! So I ordered a filet. When I got my steak it was so charred, over cooked, dry and no flavor. My filet was accompanied by 4 burnt sprigs of asparagus. I don't have enough time to review the food from the rest of our party. I did tell our server and she was very apologetic and got the manager. That's when things went from bad to worse. He was very defensive and wouldn't let me finish speaking. It was obvious he didn't have any idea what to do other than argue with me! I have now been to AJs at least 5 times and I am never disappointed with the food. Usually order the filet which is always cooked perfectly and if not a large dinner the wedge salad and onion rings are great! Was surprised to see anything but good reviews. read more
