We ordered onion rings and a relish tray for starters the latter never arrived and I mentioned it to our server and she said hadn't put it in. I said we really Didn't need it so as long as it wasn't on bill. I ordered a pork porterhouse with a baked potato and it was supposed to include a fresh vegetable which was not on the plate. At this point I didn't bother telling our server. The pork chop was ok. A bit overcooked for my liking and the loin side was definitely a bit dry. My wife ordered Lasagna which looked like any other Lasagna you'd get in the Area from Noah's or Christopher's. Tasted the same as well. Our Salads which were 90% iceberg were nothing to write home about. I had seen Coconut Cake on the menu which is one of my favorites and was listed as a house specialty. We too a piece to go. This was the biggest disappointment! Pasty and definitely not fresh at all. If I'm paying $11 for a piece of house made cake I expect to be impressed! Started with onion rings which were ok but felt like missing salt. Main entrees ordered included - spaghetti, salmon, fettuccine Alfredo, and filet deburgo (pictured) and very fairly priced. Maxie's was a staple in my family growing up. So excited they were able to find new owners. Maxie's brings back many memories of Jimmy and my father. My sister and her family and my boyfriend and I went went for dinner on a Friday night. We made a reservation. The place was mostly full when we got there. The menu contains a few classic "maxie" dishes. We all ended up ordering the prime rib. Everything was great. The meat was cooked to each of our requests. The asparagus was cooked perfectly. We've always wanted to try this place & with family in town, it was the best time! We called ahead of time, got a reservation & looked at the options. The menu is different than whats listed online, but we were all still able to find something. Arriving, parking was limited, but a nice quaint building. Inside was a little darker than excepted but very clean & nice. Many reviews of onion rings being the best, so we had to try them. I love shoestring onions & these were good! Not greasy or salty! Side mushrooms are always a must & these did not disappoint. The flavor was amazing & for only getting 3, they were a good size. Went here with my mom and sister. We all got the baked cavatelli. I ordered sausage link with mine. It did say that it was in a meat sauce...and they weren't kidding. Had I known how much meat was involved, I would've skipped the additional sausage. It was also on the spicy side. I grew up on Helen and Pat's cavatelli, which was not spicy, nor was the sauce overly meaty. Our server was fantastic and took great care of us. Picking someplace "between home and the airport" is always a challenge for us. We had a little extra time so Maxie's it was, and we love "supper clubs". Although now, after our great experience, I want to try about 8 more items so we'll be returning soon! On the way there, and looking at the menu online, I was saying that I wished more places had a steak salad, rounding out my red meat and vegetable cravings. Unfortunately, we ordered before I saw the specials menu on the table that had a delicious sounding steak salad. Server said it's been so popular they may put it on their regular menu. So I'll have to go back for this and other items. Ribeye w/ baked potato, salad (with the GOOD ranch) and a side of onion rings (all included with the ribeye). Can't comment on the potato, I didn't eat it. Onion rings are popular here but I like thicker ones, so I didn't really eat most of mine; tried one and liked the batter though. Steak was grilled perfectly med-rare, seasoning delicious. French Dip was also delicious, loved the salty au jus and, of course, we had more onion rings. Plentiful on the meat, roll was perfect for dipping, loved this French Dip! Boursin Mushrooms were added to our meal last minute because we saw them on the specialty menu after placing our order. They were delicious. Different than other places, this had a layer of melted cheese but it was still good. I like Club Car's better but I'm still glad we got these. ‍Server Jeanie was prompt and helpful. Knowing we were in a little bit of a hurry, she brought out our food altogether w/ our check, which was greatly appreciated. About the only complaint we had was that our iced tea was watered down. Nothing major and not really important, and was forgotten about because everything else was so outstanding. Pricing is very reasonable (receipt and menu pics for those that like to see prices). Service 4 and Food 2 = Rating of 3 I had not been here in many years. I suspect the loyal crowd is great with some things that don't work well for me and if I ran it, I'd probably do the same. Our server, Hannah was great...checked in frequently and brought refills as soon as we needed them without prompting. The food was just OK. My dining companion got a burger and subbed out veggies for the fries/rings as he is on a diet. He said the burger had a good taste, and the veggies were OK, but nothing special - simply steamed. I got the grilled chicken salad. All iceberg lettuce and somewhat dry chicken with egg, tomato, and raw baby carrots. I would have preferred a more interesting mix of greens, but I get that I may be in the minority of the regular guests of this establishment. The dressing was good, and baby carrots were an interesting choice vs. shredded or diced. It is an iconic restaurant that has weathered the years...probably just not my kind of grub, but I'm sure it works well for many! read more

I hate to admit it, as long as I've lived in the metro, this was my first visit to Maxie's. My first impression was old school... Like Chuck's or Iowa Beef Steakhouse. And I'm okay with that... In a lot of ways I prefer it. I guess I grew up a little old school... We've been looking for a new (reasonably priced) burger joint on the West side since BW's closed. While Maxie's isn't burger focused we decided to give it a shot. Arrived at about 1120 am on a Saturday... We were greeted right away and taken to a booth. Seating is a combo of booths and low tables and chairs (from two tops to six tops that could be combined for larger parties). I noticed a private room off to the side. I ordered the Maxie Burger (medium rare), up charge for mushrooms and Swiss, sides of rings and French fries, and an ice tea. Heather ordered the Maxie BBQ burger (medium well), sides of rings and seasoned fries (with ranch), and a water. The total for lunch ran $25 and change before tip. Service was very good. Orders and checks are taken at the table. There was only one server working the floor along with a host but they were attentive and quick with refills. The 8 oz. burgers were perfect to temp, had good flavor, and the meals were filling. We both liked the fries, but her seasoned fries took the cake. Thick, but cooked completely through and held their crunch to the end of the meal. The onion rings...meh. I'm a thick ring guy so they were decent...just not my thing. A very good first visit here. My husband and I ate at Maxie's on 7/7 and everything was wonderful. We got the two specials that night - prime rib for my husband and the rigatoni pasta with graziano sausage for me. We had an amazing experience at Maxie's; unfortunately I forgot to snap photos of the food. I highly recommend the onion rings; they were cooked to perfection and had the perfect amount of crunch! Tried this place out because the radio said they were closing and I can say the food was prepared QUICKLY like most food in Iowa (Iowa food is always fast but rarely good) but I was not in a rush and would rather the food be good. Tried to give them another chance and tried to call several times from 6pm to 8pm and never got anybody and called the next day and was told that they only take orders to go till 730pm. One of the biggest problems in Iowa is restaurants keeping Iowa hours (Iowa hours are short/lazy hours) that WORKING people cannot make and this is why franchise restaurants are doing so well as they have regular/working people hours. This place like all Iowa restaurants will soon be a Mexican restaurant serving meat,cheese and flour (All Mexican food is the same stuff) and the owner will blame the customers. read more

For many years Younkers served THE BEST Rarebit burgers in town! With their restaurant closure so went the best Rarebit until I experienced Maxie's! Awesome Rarebits and the accompanying French fries and Onion Rings were the best. Our service was rather slow despite dining during a "slow time," but the server was courteous and certainly friendly. Great prices, great food, great service ! What more could you want on a Saturday night ? My fiancée and I came here for dinner. I had the pork chops and she had the teriyaki grilled chicken. My meal came with 2 boneless pork chops, salad, choice of potato, cinnamon apples, onion straws/rings, and rolls. I chose the baked potato but it was small. My fiancées meal came with 1 good size grilled chicken breast, rice/mixed veggies, egg roll, salad, and rolls. Everything we had was good. The salad is just standard iceberg lettuce, cucumber, croutons, and we asked cheese with no Tomato. We shared a homemade strawberry shortcake for dessert! It was amazing! It was cooked perfect. The Onion rings were also really good. I got 2 mixed drinks too. They were although a bit stronger, very good. The staff was very friendly & attentive. Not too attentive but just the right amount. The food was cooked great & brought in a timely manner. The cost is a little more than I generally spend but I don't normally have a steak. Tonight was a disappointment as to compared to the Maxies of yester years. Starting with an appetizer of onion rings.....they were thin and crispy but soaked in grease. The tenderloin sandwich contained a very thin piece of tenderloin....basically a crispy crust with no meat in the middle. Lastly, someone needs to teach the chef how to cook Chicken Marsala. The chicken was good but it along with the pasta and mushrooms was all swimming in beef broth rather than a rich creamy wine sauce. It also include bacon bits which was a little strange. A friend and I chose to dine at Maxie's tonight. We both ordered Steak deBurgo. This is a locally created favorite for several decades. I've ordered the dish at a few other restaurants with good results. What we had tonight might have been a garlic lover's dream. The chef used about 4 Tablespoons of jarred minced garlic on each beef filet with a nice amount of cracked pepper and I'd like to call it butter but truly believe it was olive oil for the sauce. My steak was to be cooked medium but was well done. The fresh asparagus is past its delicate prime so please quit serving it, as it's stringy, tough, woody and had no flavor. The mushrooms were okay but again both vegetables were swimming in the garlic sauce. I scraped the garlic from the steak into a huge pile. When the waitress asked how our food was we told her how we felt. Your chef needs to rework the house recipe for deBurgo. If you can't use fresh garlic and hand mince a small clove per each entree you should quit serving the dish. We ordered desserts at $10.95 each, yowser that's pretty steep! Mine was a tart shell filled with blueberry pie filling and fresh blueberries, served with a melting dish of lemon sherbet. The tart shell was tough and not made in-house. Please open a cookbook and bake something more intriguing. You had stars removed for too much jarred garlic, horrid asparagus, bad imagination in dessert creation and overpriced dessert. I hadn't been to Maxie's in several years, I saw it in the news and it brought up some nostalgia. I should have left those memories in the past. First of all, the building is falling apart, water was dripping from the ceiling and landing on people. The service was awful but friendly. It took our waitress 15 minutes to come to our table and take our food and drink order. We ordered onion rings along two side salads and two entrees. The onion rings came out quickly, they were cold and soggy and tasted like they had been cooked 30 minutes earlier. Our entrees came out about 30 minutes later. Both of our entrees were poor tasting and my entree (roast beef and gravy sandwich) made me very sick to my stomach. Our salads never came out and we eventually cancelled our salad orders. Overall the experience was awful. I won't be going back. I hope the new owners are able to save the place, but they have their work cut out for them. read more

I'll admit I was a bit apprehensive upon seeing some of the negative reviews listed on here, but I thought I'd give it a shot since I'm a big fan of skinny onion rings. I was greeted warmly when I walked in the door and seated soon. My waitress' name was Amanda. She did what I consider to be excellent service--Take drink order, give time to scan the menu, take the order, keep the drink glass refilled, and check back in on the meal before bringing the check. I'm amazed at how few servers can do this--many seem to be rushing you out the door. On the food side, I ordered the tenderloin. I got a nice sized tenderloin that was cooked perfectly (not brunt, not undercooked). If I had to guess, I'd say the breading is of the cracker-crumb type as opposed to being battered. Maxie's uses the nice thick cut pickles that don't get soggy, similar to what you see at Jason's Deli or Hickory Park, for comparisons sake. As an added bonus, Maxie's uses white onions on their tenderloin, and in large rings, which I feel compliment a tenderloin better than red onions. While the french fries weren't anything special, the onion rings were indeed a delight. You also get plenty of them on your plate--no need to order them as an appetizer. The ranch dressing is kind of thick in my opinion and didn't strike me as particularly impressive, though I wouldn't go so far as to say it was "bad". Bun was the only thing I didn't care for overall--it was rather large and dry. While the sesame seeds don't bother me, the bun would have been better if they put a smattering of butter on it before toasting the bun or throwing it on the griddle. I also ordered an iced tea--fortunately it is fresh-brewed here. I was amused by the framed pictures of classic cars that went all the around the seating area. As a bonus for candy lovers, there's large jars of Tootsie Roll Pops and Andes Mints by the cash register that are complimentary. Overall, I was plenty impressed by Maxie's and look forward to a return visit soon. As a note, they have a punch card that entitles you to a free lunch entree after purchasing nine. read more

This place was very quaint and cozy. Very casual and family-friendly. There looked to be a regular dining area and a bar dining area in the other side. Very clean but you could tell this place is one of the older Des Moines restaurants. The Service: Robin was a fantastic server! She was so sweet and accommodating. We told her that it was our first time there and she gave us some great recommendations. The Food: Breaded Combo Appetizer - 3/5 for $8.99 you get a good portion of onion rings with your choice of three other breaded items. We chose breaded mushrooms, fried string beans, and mozzarella cheese. The mozzarella cheese was not great but the string beans were delicious and the mushrooms were good. Was treated to a cozy Valentine dinner here this week. We both ordered Maxie's Special which comes with: salad, rolls, steak, two shrimp, baked potato, and onion rings all for the reasonable price of $21.99. It's the kind of stomach fullness Thanksgiving dinners are made of. The rolls were AWESOME. They came out hot so I was able to cut it open and put a whole butter cube in there, creating a butter swamp right there in my roll. I was equally as pleased with the salad. When dinner came it looked amazing. I ordered my steak medium rare, it was still mooing when I got it. So word to the wise, either send it back (I didn't want to wait) or order it medium. Flemings is really the only place I trust to execute on medium-rare, this experience reiterated that for me. Everything else was legit. I thought it was certainly worth every penny!
