They gave a slick website and let you order/pay online for delivery anywhere. Before I ordered I wish I had first checked out their reviews online. The reviews are awful about orders either never arriving or plants showing up dead and rotted. I tried to call them but number is busy 24x7. I send emails to cancel my order but no response. 2 months go by and out of the blue I get an email that my order shipped. Well they arrived 3 days later and 90% had to be thrown out and the remainder aren't likely to live, but I'll try. I'm going to contact my credit card company to dispute that charges. I ordered a lot of seeds and plants from them this year. So 5 of the 8 trees arrived dead. Two of the others are still not here and planting time for trees is done up here. One tree is really trying hard to make it. I called about the dead trees. They said wait 5 weeks. They gave me a voucher for one but I get to pay shipping again. I purchased seeds. So far they germinate and come up to about a inch then die off. That is sad, I literally found some skullcap seeds dated 2009 from another company. I planted those and they are taking off like mad. I ordered some 5n1 fruit trees and tomato plants. The fruit trees were dead dried out twigs, they didn't even ship with any kind of dirt or anything to keep the trees and roots moist. The tomato "tree" plants were tiny (2 or 3 inches tall) and mostly dead, 1 or 2 out of 5 might make it. I consider this company more fraudulent than legit. read more

Burgess Plant and Seed/Gurney/EBurgess should not be in business. THE most unprofessional company I have ever dealt with. On 5-21-23, I looked at the online catalog for Burgess Plant and Seed. I found a Crimson Rose and a Yellow Rose that I wanted. The catalog showed that both roses were in stock and ready for shipment. I immediately ordered both and paid with my credit card. The order number for this purchase was #31410282900. Burgess advised at that time, that the items would arrive at my home between 6-5-23 and 6-9-23. On 6-10-23, I got on the Burgess website and checked my order. My order said that the items were available for shipping with an estimated shipping date between 6-12-23 and 6-17-23. I went onto my credit card account and saw that Burgess had debited my account for $58.18 on 5-23-23. On 6-12-23, I got on the Burgess website and found that the items were still available but the shipping date had changed. The new estimated shipping date was 6-13-23 to 6-18-23. On 6-13-23, I checked the website again and found that the items were still available with an estimated shipping date of 6-14-23 to 6-19-23. At this time, I called their phone number (309-662-7761) listed on their website and talked to a customer service representative (I did not get his name). After a few minutes, I asked to speak to his supervisor and was transferred to "Robin". Robin offered to refund the shipping on the order since it had been an extended period of time. He them said that it would take another 2 to 3 days for the roses to ship. I asked Robin if he had a supervisor and he told me that he had several supervisors. I asked him if I could speak to his supervisor and he transferred me to "Latasha" in Tennessee. Latasha began by telling me about how great Burgess/Gurney was and that they had very few complaints. She then said that it is company policy that plants are not shipped until it is planting time for them. I told her that the roses I ordered showed that they were in stock and ready for shipping. She then told me that the order couldn't be shipped for 2 to 3 days. After talking with Latasha, I went back on to the Burgess website and look on their catalog for the roses I had ordered on 5-21-23. I found that both roses were now out of stock. I did know if it meant no further orders would be accepted or if my order would not be sent. On 6-16-23, I thought I'd check my order status on the Burgess website and was surprised. The order number (#31410282900s) didn't show the roses on the order. The only thing on the order was "Sweet Corn Honey 'N' Pearl Hybrid Kit" and it had been cancelled. I immediately called their phone number (309-662-7761) and was connected to a CSR name Ria. She had a very thick accent and I was unable to understand her. I asked where her call center was and she told me that it was in the Philippines. I told her that I was having a hard time understanding her and if she could transfer me to her supervisor. She put me on hold for a few minutes, then returned and told me no one was available. I tried to get information on why the shipment was cancelled and why I was not notified by email. Since I was unable to communicate with Ria, I was not able to get that information. It shows a severe lack of customer service to tell a customer that an item will be shipped and never ship it and ultimately cancel the order without telling to customer. At this time, my credit card has not been refunded. I will be posting this message on each and every "Review" website I can find. Burgess/Gurney should not be in business with the work ethic they have. read more

*UPDATE* I finally was able to get through to the call center. The girl was very cold she had snippy one word answers to all of my questions, and when I mentioned writing a bad review, she said "Do what you need to do"... These people do not value a customer's business- THEY TREAT PEOPLE AS IF THEY DON'T NEED THE MONEY!!! If I ever spoke to a customer the way she spoke to me, I would lose my job. I placed an order at the beginning of April. It's now mid June and I still don't have my order. I have tried multiple times to reach out via email and phone, but can only get an automated reply emailed after a week of waiting. My credit card was declined but instead of reaching out, they just canceled the order. When I inquired about giving an updated card number, they said I would have to wait another 4 weeks. I understand company policies, I do. I worked at a small business, selling to the public, and it is a hard job. I can honestly say, I would never, ever, treat my customers this way. A little communication goes a long way. If we ever had an issue like this the first thing we would do is reach out to the customer, not send some impersonal automated response. I am so upset about this because I ordered a garden for my daughter and I to plant and now I have to tell her the rude people canceled it. Are you serious? My son sent me painted daisies as a gift. No instructions in the box for planting but when I called customer service the representative was great. Also, one of my 10 packs arrived molded. Customer service has agreed to replace the molded pack. I had no issue with the company and my other 9 packs of daisies are already popped through the ground. The molded plant wasn't the best, but I'm giving this 5 stars because I called customer service twice ( once for instruction, once for replacement) and they were great both times. read more

The promised refund has still not been received. The shipping label and list of plants was returned by certified mail, so I know that they have gotten everything for which they asked. They also requested proof of purchase, which they should have on file. Customer service is beyond absolutely horrible. In April, I informed them that items were missing and that most of the plants/seedlings that arrived were in terrible shape. Several of these died, despite the extra care given. So, it's been over a year.... I had about a 75% success rate, which I think isn't too shabby sine I only spent about $68 which included shipping and taxes, and I received quite a bit for that price. What came back up this year & is thriving: 4 of 4 Shasta Daisies 3 of 3 Flame Grass 1 of 1 Bonfire Euphorbia 2 of 2 Catmint Dwarf 3-in-1 citris tree lost 2 grafts, but is still alive..I brought it in over winter and now it is outside....still about the same height. Only 1 of my 3 Lavender came back which was disheartening because all three grew pretty large last summer and it is the Hardy English Lavender. I bought 1 Bi-Color Butterfly Bush, which grew great last summer, but did not even grow a shoot this year. Also bought and Orange Glory Butterfly Plant which shot up two shoots this spring, but they shriveled up and fell off, so not sure what happened there. I didn't try to get any money back because by the time I remembered, it was already past a year...and probably wouldn't have anyway because it seemed like a lot of hastle for $12. All in all, I would buy from Burgess again...low prices, they have a great selection, and I like a challenge. I am thinking of buying some trees from them, so I will follow up with that..... I stand by my original comment that people not familiar with plants should look elsewhere. read more

I will never order from this company again. I ordered plants in late April. I realize things are slower now due to covid, but the service I received is down right appalling. I don't normally complain, but this deserves a negative review. It was a day or two shy of July before I received my order! This was after trying to reach them MULTIPLE TIMES. Being told multiple times it was in the shipping department! I asked for a refund but they told me it had already been shipped. 60% of it is unusable. Plants DEAD, SOGGY ONION SETS. They are scammers is what they are. One of the few things that made it through ok were the free items, which were seeds. Need a zero star option. Disappointed doesn't begin to describe how awful this company is. Ordered in April 2020 to try and #StayAtHome and didn't receive anything for almost 8 weeks. That's 2 months people!! From illinois!! Just for small plants and seeds. Jesus, it's not hard to grab the ordered items, throw in a box and ship. If you are out of items, communicate to the buyer and move forward. Tried calling - busy signal. Tried emailing, and just get this "cheery-sounding" email back saying "your order is in shipping" but then nothing arrives for weeks. Tried canceling and they said "we forwarded your request to our cancellation dept." Yeah right - never heard anything and then items arrived in the mail. Items are not looking great and may die. After 7 weeks of waiting and the order being pushed back twice with just lame excuses and me cancelling 6 out of 8 items when "In Stock" changed to "Back Ordered", the two remaining items actually arrived. Before that, Burgess looked to me like just a scam. Their business model seems to be to collect the money for your order in seconds then spent as long as possible makes excuses for not delivering. When you call and complain, they do give your money back but keep some as a cancellation fee, which in the end means some people end up giving them money for nothing. I don't know. Maybe they are just incompetent and only follow through with the people who complain. But it seems like many people have had similar experiences. Their reviews on BBB and here on Yelp are bad, bad, bad. I have to admit though, that the few plants I did get were in very good shape and very well packaged. I finally called them today, March 31st, and they said the seeds just shipped and the potatoes are being batched right now to be shipped and should have them in the next week or so. Seriously? I love in zone 6B, some of these things should have been in the ground already. They had no problem taking payment of over $200 from my account on March 1st but not even shipping the seeds until a month later. Absolutely ridiculous. I'll never spend my money with them again. On Friday, Sept. 27, 9:48PM I placed an order for 200 bare root strawberries. I then noticed that Burgess has horrible reviews online. I immediately decided to cancel. Following Burgess cancellation policy (https://www.eburgess.com/terms-and-conditions),  I notified Burgess in writing that I was canceling my order at 9:50PM on Friday, Sept. 27.  On Monday, Oct. 30,  Burgess emailed me and let me know that Burgess was forwarding my cancellation to the correct department.  I followed up via email Oct. 1 to confirm the order was canceled and Burgess said it was in the works.    I emailed again on Oct. 2 and asked for an update, and was told, "There is no new update." On Oct. 3 Burgess shipped the order. I immediately emailed and asked Burgess to stop the shipment, and was told that I would have to ship the order back, at my own expense, with the original shipping label. I emailed back letting Burgess know that was unacceptable, as I would not pay for shipping.  On Saturday, Oct. 5 I refused the order at delivery and immediately emailed Burgess, letting them know.  On Tuesday, Oct. 8, I received the following nonsensical reply: "Thank you for your response. We apologize, but we do not offer a return shipping label. The customer is responsible for mailing the order back for a refund.Thank you, Customer Care" On Tuesday, Oct. 8, I emailed Burgess with this information in one last attempt to resolve this issue directly with the merchant. I ordered a 5 and 1 pear tree dwarf from Burgess. It was in January of 2019 . I planted it nurtured it and was looking forward to it producing pears . It turned out to be an invasive Callery pear. I got a hold of Burgess and they said it is only guaranteed for a year . The problem is I didn't know what type of tree it was until it matured and started bearing fruit . They would not do a return and did not help very much on the phone . I would not recommend this company nor will I ever do business with them again . read more

My experience with Burgess over the past two years has been horendous. When we lived in Illinois they seemed to do a good job of getting a quality product reasonably to us when we ordered it. After we moved to Texas from Illinois we continued to use Burgess but have found it to be no more than a frustrating money grabber and no way to reasonably address quality or timeliness issues with their products. We have likely wasted a few hundred dollars on products that were not viable with really no recourse. If I still lived in Illinois or if I believed the Illinois States Attorney General would actually investigate this company for fraudulent practices, I would file a complaint against them. Buyer beware. The Bloomington, Illinois Burgess Company has horrible products and worse customer service. There are other Burgess companies in other states that may be just fine. read more

We placed an approximately $80.00+ order in March so that we would have the items to plant in a timely manner. Not only was the order extremely late, but the plants that we received were in very poor condition! The four trees that we ordered turned out to be only "sticks" ~ we're not trying to produce toothpicks! We wanted some budding/flowering trees, but everything is dead. Most of the plants we ordered do not seem like they will survive. This is completely unacceptable for a business that used to sell quality products. I bought a number of plants online from this company on 11MY21. I inquired as to the delivery a month later and was told that they were a bit behind on deliveries. I asked that they not be delivered after 25JN21 as I would be going on vacation and would not have the opportunity to plant them. They paid no attention to that request and shipped product on 27JN21. I returned from vacation on 11JL21 and found the plants to be slimy and mostly dead. I called the company and was told that I could not return the product as it was beyond the two week time per their return policy. They were delivered on 01JL21, so I still had a few days to return the product, contrary to what they said. I did return all of the product and contacted my credit card company to dispute the charge. Burgess did not give me a full refund, holding back about $14,00 for no specified reason, but I did get my funds returned and the reason that they received a second star. My major complaint was their not paying attention to my request on delivery and then hassling me on my call - giving me false information on the return. I gave the last bush time to wake up and about a week ago I saw fresh green buds open with beautiful greenery. I am definitely on my way to having a nice privet hedge. I am going to add that 5th star now that my entire order came out of dormancy. I am very please because I have 100% viability for just $10. I would recommend to anyone with experience with bare root plants to give Burgess a try. For those who were disappointed to receive "sticks" in the mail, please see your way to your local nursery for robust, mature plants. What a scam.... I ordered over $100 in plants and seed in July 2020. By August 2020 I received the seed portion of my order. I called them to follow up with the rest of my order, understanding shipping is delayed due to the pandemic, and they told me they should be shipping out my plants in September. September comes and goes and nothing. Emails exchanged, calls made, and finally I told them to cancel and refund my order. Out of the blue I receive some of my plants in late October, but still not all. They shipped my plants in a BAG!!! my plants came in the mail in a BAG! I called to complain of the state I had received them, broken branches, torn and tattered leaves, and to inquire where my refund was for the part of my order that was still outstanding. They said my remaining order would ship in Spring 2021 and I said, no. I have since called twice more, apparently my order has been pulled for a refund, but not yet entered into their system? For some reason that takes over a month to do. There is no timeline they can give me for when my the refund request will be entered into their system and when they do enter it, it will take 30+ days before they refund me. I should have saved my season by sticking with the catalogs I knew and trusted instead of trying out a new one with its promise of being the best price.
