I am sad to write this. I have been going to Burlingame Vet through several ownership changes and 2 dogs. The care for my dog has generally been excellent and I am confident both Vets care about her well being. I cannot say as much for the Business side tho. Since Honi left, the experience noticeably changed. I may be "old school," but I expect staff at a business to treat me as though they are happy I choose to patronize them and help pay their salaries. I guess Burlingame Vet now has plenty of business, so that common courtesy is no longer necessary. I have mentioned the need for a simple attitude check multiple times in the kindest way. I have always assumed it was not intentional, but finally this morning, one of the Vets snapped at me and and suggested I must be making this up for some strange reason. I have to say - the complaint has continued only because there has been no change whatsoever since I first raised it. I also notice other comments here suggest this experience is not mine alone. It is really not hard to be kind to customers, but if you do not see a need to do so, I suppose it is understandable there will be no attempt. Anyway I can certainly take a hint. I have been patient and hoped for an attitude adjustment, but I cannot abide willful poor customer service, so, after 20 years, I have found an equally qualified and caring alternative. The other location is not nearly as convenient, but I will simply not continue to patronize a business when they go out of their way to treat me with contempt every time I visit. I have begun working with a new clinic and the difference is night and day. They always greet me as though they are happy I chose to work with them and they never act "strangely." Everyone here has been so incredibly helpful and kind. I finally have a pup of my own so I'm calling them all the time with all sorts of questions and everyone is so kind and helpful. I never have a problem getting meds for my pup. They're always calling and checking in after certain appointments. I read a lot of good reviews, so I was considering switching given they're closer to our new house and our current vet's office staff has been a little underwhelming (e.g. communication hasn't been great, like forgot to tell us we could go so we sat in the exam room 20 minutes lol, left me on hold once for 30 min. until I hung up and called back, didn't confirm receipt of records emailed, etc., though maybe they're just understaffed like many are!). I just want to help ensure people know, though, that they're still 100% curbside (as of Aug 2022) with no plans for in person visits and (this blew me away) even for euthanasia... To Rae's credit (who answered the phone), she offered that as a clarification when I asked if they are 100% curbside even for a potentially nervous pup's first visit - I'm SO thankful she said that, since I hadn't really thought about that but cannot imagine not being allowed to be there if a pet needed to be euthanized. I might not have thought of it and switched, so I'm sharing in case others might consider BVC without realizing that, too! read more

Made a call to see what could be done for my cats fleas and they want roughly $1000 to take care of them with a lie about why it was so high. We have only been with this clinic for a short time but I only have good things to say! Our pup Koa has had some ongoing GI issues for several months and the doctor suggested a simple diet change which has led to great results! We have had quick response regarding test results and care plans, and also great follow up to check on him. He was neutered last week here and I could not believe how smoothly it went, and again they called to check in on him more than once. This clinic has provided nothing but timely, professional and attentive care. When I send them emails, I get quick replies. I do not know what's happened with this clinic. I am on my third day of trying to refill my dog's medication and they seem to be doing everything they can to keep me from getting it anywhere but directly from them. I have been told multiple times that the vet will speak with me on it, only to hear nothing from him. I have been told the prescription will be sent to my local pharmacy, only to have them do so incorrectly repeatedly, or to call and cancel it because they approved an order from an online pharmacy, even though I still need medication to give my dog while that ships. I get vaguely told that the medication is "different" from a human pharmacy with zero explanation other than the human pharmacy has a lower dosage. The pharmacist doesn't see why my dog can't just take more pills of the lower dosage to reach his current dose, and the vet refuses to tell me. I even emailed the vet about the situation and he didn't even bother to respond. They also charge 4 times as much for this medication as the online pharmacy, and that really doesn't look good combined with their behavior around this refill. UPDATE: When I told the owners wife about this situation she laughed at me and told me she was nice to me and that they're not trying to keep my dog's medication from me. I don't understand why the gaslighting and why to laugh at me when I've been trying to get this medication for three days now, but I'm crying as I write this. I just want my dog to be okay and I'm being treated like a total monster for just wanting to fill a medication and have a simple question answered. read more

Solution: took my best friend to see Dr.Mark and staff at Burlingame for less than $200. I was impressed with their attitude and confidence from the get-go. My male cat was fixed here last year, and the experience was great! It was higher priced than other places, $250/male under 9mo, but it's close to home so I paid for the convenience. We really liked the staff, Honey the receptionist was just as amazing at the doctor and tech, we felt we found a new home here. 2-3 weeks ago I called to schedule my 4 Mama cats to be fixed here now that the Covid kittens are weaned. The price on the website is $275 +/-, higher than other places, but that's ok for excellent service. It took an extraordinary amount of time to get a call back. Yesterday, I was finally called by the clinic and told they are no longer doing the BVC program (still proudly displayed on the website), and spaying is now $650/cat minimum! As a family, 4 households, we've been bouncing between vets since we've been adrift after Dr McNeil of Garden Home Veterinary Clinic died. We were with him for over 30yrs, he felt like family and we trusted him, having trust in our provider is essential. Now, none of us will be back because 1. we feel deceived by the bait and switch pricing, and 2. the length of time it took to even get back to us was astounding. We been going to this clinic for three years and I'm very disappointed every time after the change of the first Vet (we saw). Since we've been there we have seen 4-5 different Vets. Reasons NOT to go here: -the prices are ridiculous (overpriced). But since we love our fur children we pay for it. BECAUSE OF ITS LOCATION -unnecessary testing (even when you say no). They make you feel like you an idiot & you don't know what you are talking about. -miscommunication between staff -and the list goes on. Examples: I remember taking my dog in because she had a reaction and was sick. Over $1,000 bill later and still no answer. I was asked to come back and retest her again. We were just in there for shots and I asked to get my dog microchipped and I was told she needed another exam $$ I believe they need to charge you any way they can in order to stay in business. I'm finally over it. I hate calling the Vet- definitely a sign to change clinic. Yes, it's the one on the corner. I've been sitting on this review for a while. You see, I've eaten at least 3 meals a day (sometimes 5 or 6 - you've seen how big I am), and so I feel like I am well-versed enough in the ways of food and drink to review a restaurant after a few visits. However when it comes to Vets, Doctors, Lawyers, or other professionals, our problems are generally so specialized, and we encounter them so infrequently, that it's really hard to get a good read based on just a small handful of encounters. But after yesterday's visit, I am finally ready to drop this write up. We found Burlingame vet through the ASPCA program that offers coupons for discount spay and neuter services (if you don't know, look into it... it can save you hundreds of dollars, and ALL pets should be spayed and neutered. There's no excuse. If you need more than one, go adopt one of the thousands that die unadopted in shelters each year rather than letting yours reproduce). Back in 2008, we discovered 3 newborn kittens in a little hidden spot next to our garage. One of the neighborhood strays got herself all knocked up and we're the lucky ones that got the result. Needing to get them spayed and neutered, we took them to Burlingame and our tribe got the knife, shots, and the whole shabang. They did a seemingly good job, and were both friendly and reasonably priced. After two of the three were adopted out to a stable home, the little one we kept (Piper: http://static4.px.yelp.com/photo/gpXkowXsMvBjJ-OwkRchzw/l) got herself into something naughty, and developed a nice little fever and a tongue infection. Back across town to Burlingame Vet Clinic we went, and once again, they did a great job of quickly diagnosing the problem and linking us up with the tools to fix it. The overall cost for the visit was very reasonable (as far as I know - each time I even think about seeing a DR, my insurance gets billed at least $400). A little over $100 in and out with antibiotics is not too shabby. Of course, owning tabby breed cats, especially those you've rescued as strays, has its benefits, one of which is that they are a resilient breed of cat. They rarely get sick (unlike purebred cats, which always have problems), so we have not had much occasion to bring our cats in. Until this week... I returned home from traveling to find our older cat acting very strange, hiding under the bed, tweaking out, being friendly then not. And his breath was worse than if you took the bottom of a garbage can and coated it with rotten milk, burnt hair, and milk-farts. So just slightly worse than your average cat breath. These kinds of things are never good. So into the cat box he went, and back across town I rolled to the vet. This cat is about 6 or 7, and was rescued from a dumpster. He's had a hard life, and he HATES the vet. The folks at BVC were able to fit us in early (almost same day). The vet was super quick to diagnose the issue. He handled the cat VERY well, not too rough, but in control. Beyond diagnosing, he took the time to show me the books to back up both the diagnosis and the recommended prescription antibiotic remedy. Overall, again, I was in and out on an expedited appointment with a steroid shot and a bottle of Clavamox for $126. I feel good about the time he spent with me, that he answered my questions, and was up front about everything. Add in that I was able to watch him deal with a cat with strong muscles and long claws that's not a fan of the vet in a controlling but not brutal manner. I am finally ready to recommend this vet to others. He's done good by us, and I will continue to make the incredibly inconvenient drive from 82nd to Terwilliger just to see these guys. read more

It's sad to have to write this review, because I've been to this clinic previously, and really liked them. So when it was time to take my dog back for a routine exam, I went back. Dr. Kellogg wasn't in that day, so my dog was seen by another veterinarian. The vet gave her a good exam, checked her teeth, etc. and we agreed to book a teeth cleaning. 36 hours later, my dog came down with a nasty case of kennel cough. I live alone and we've not had contact with any other dogs for the past week and a half. I brought her in first thing yesterday, was prescribed antibiotics/anti-tussant, and paid $160 for it. Today, my dog is worse and it's hard to watch, particularly since she's never been sick before. I called the clinic to explain the situation, and asked if they would be willing to give me some sort of credit on the teeth cleaning, I was told that that wasn't a fair request, that they aren't responsible for my dog getting sick, but was offered additional cough meds at no cost. That's unfortunate, as I think they had an opportunity to recover my business if they'd been willing to work with me. While I do like Dr. Kellogg, and think he's a good vet, I'll be taking my dog's care elsewhere as a result. read more

Update 2/6: Decided to take my pup in for her spay at Burlingame and the staff was amazing. It was apparent that she got a ton of personal attention, and the vet even made a point to tell me what a good girl she was during her spay visit :) Dropped her off before 9 am and picked her up at 4:30, my dog was under 60 pounds so she qualified for the "discount" spay (the spay ended up costing me around $160 total). The vet used internal dissolvable sutures which meant no itching and no cone required, my pup was back to her old self the next day. Her spay visit couldn't have gone better. Bumping Burlingame Vet up to 5 stars from 4, still wish they would have offered alternative/natural flea solutions, naturopathic pet care etc, but the care she received was top notch and I doubt I could have gotten better care from any other vet clinic in town. I'd recommend this vet clinic in a heartbeat to anyone looking for a quality spay or routine care from a professional staff. read more

I have been going to the Burlingame Vet Clinic for many years, since 2000 maybe? We have had 3 dogs and a cat that have been patients at the clinic. I have always been very impressed by the compassion Dr. Kellogg shows for our pets, and also for the compassion he appears to show for our wallets. He always lays out the options that are available for our pets, from spendy to thrifty, and when we've had to choose thrifty, there is no judgment. No judgment, no "but doggie will die without it" guilt trip, just acceptance of our decision. Dr. Kellogg was awesome with our chow, who despite his growly-growl when at the vet was actually a nice dog. Dr. Kellogg quickly established alpha dog status and knew how to not be intimidated. That relaxed our dog, us, and made the whole experience less awful. Dr. Byers was really good with our cat. I have never seen Kitty so relaxed at the vet as when he was being handled by her (even with a finger in the rear!). Today was the day Dr. Kellogg impressed me beyond belief. Our aforementioned 15 year old chow was in bad, bad shape. He wasn't moving, wasn't eating, drinking... We made the tough decision that the right thing to do was have the vet give him peace, and called the clinic at about 8:00 AM. Dr. Kellogg had a busy day, but delayed the start of a surgery to come to our house to help us and our sweet Chew. Chew is on the other side now, but thanks to the gentleness and compassion of Dr. Kellogg, did not have to suffer longer than necessary, and was sent to sleep gently. I took my 7 month old cat here after I had taken him to an emergency animal hospital the week before for a urinary obstruction. The vet was so thorough and told me all my options. This clinic is amazing. Both vet's are practical and realize that vet care is spendy. I have a St Bernard with only three legs. He requires a lot of vet care and no matter what is going on with him, I know he will be well cared for. The cost? One of the best, most affordable clinics in Portland. We even had an ill stray we took in and Dr. Kellogg not only shaved him, but took him home OVERNIGHT to stay in his house to watch him overnight as he was severly dehydrated. My wife and I adopted a rescue dog about a month ago and chose Burlingame Vet Clinic to care for her based on the many many great reviews. Our pooch came to us very underweight, with stomach problems, and seemed to just shut down some days because she wasn't feeling well. Drs. Ziegenbalg and Hunt were outstanding. They caught and diagnosed at least 4 different issues our poor girl was having. After following their treatment plan, she is like a new dog! That alone would earn our loyalty, but the truly remarkable part was the deep concern, consideration, and availability shown by everyone at the clinic. Dr. Z responded to emails at off hours when we had questions, called us to follow up, and showed real caring and commitment to helping us bring our girl to good health. i had inquired by phone about clinic cost before the visit. The estimate seemed doable. The actual price was $350. I live on Social Security Disablity due to crippling arthritis which I explained to the Dr. so this was way beyond what I budgeted for.. My dog had an infected tooth. Cost of treatment would be $380. These price are substantially higher than what I have paid before both for routine visits, meds, and teeth scaling at other vets. The clinic had no combination heart worm and flea product so one has to buy 2 products increasing the bill. This clinic requires lab before teeth cleaning increasing the bill. Last cleaning at another vet lab not required. Lab is expensive. I have just had 4 surgeries and no labs were necessary.I told the staff and Dr. that I had an infected surgical chest wound and that I could not pick up my dog because her weight exceeds my Dr. precautions. Even so, I was left to lift her off of the high table. The staff is friendly. and knowledgeable. The clinic was not busy but there is still a wait time. I was told my dog will lose her tooth because I cannot afford $380. I will find a caring affordable clinic to treat for her tooth. I am a retired MD. If I had a patient with an infection my office set up a payment plans. Not so here. I now understand why so many animals in Portland are not vaccinated and have chronic health problems. The crisis of lack of affordable vet care in Portland is discussed all over the net. Overall, your pet will receive adequate care in a friendly environment when the staff has time. Be prepared to do the lifting.The vet was well trained but did not do the heart worm test so my dog had to go back in the room. I received some instruction about care so that was good. read more

The doctors and staff at Burlingame Vet are AMAZING. We've been seen by them since 2013 and have 3 pups with multiple chronic health issues under their care. The veterinarians are friendly and thorough. They take their time during appointments and follow up after with a phone call if we change a medication or a dose. Getting an appointment is easy and they understand the cost of caring for pets so always offer options that are budget friendly while also explaining what they think needs to be done and when. I never feel pressured and I always feel confident they have a plan to provide my pets with excellent care. Cannot say enough good things about Burlingame Vet Clinic I adopted a Bichon who had had a litter when she was just an adolescent. I wanted that phase of her life over and finished. I called around for spaying and found a fair price and a receptive vet clinic at Burlingame. They were warm & reassuring. We drove over there from East Portland on an icy morning and were welcomed warmly. When I picked GiGi up that evening they gave me a guide of what to expect...excellent information. Months later when I lost the AVID microchip number for GiGi, they provided it with no hassle. Burlingame is not in my neighborhood but it is certainly worth the trip across town. I really like Dr Byers - she cares and she is knowledgable, but I just can't afford to visit this vet. I was advised to do a urinalysis - which I wanted to do and was asked to collect the urine at home. Great, I thought, we can avoid another expensive vet visit $48 - ouch. I was charged $7.95 just for the little kit (a container, dropper and charcoal). REALLY? When I came back to drop off the urine - the receptionist asked me for $88 for the urinalysis. Are you kidding? It's hard to say anything to the receptionist - it's not her fault. My suggestion - if you are going to charge these kinds of prices - let the customer know - have a price sheet. When I made the appointment I made sure to tell the receptionist that cost of treatment was an issue. Maybe some pet owners do not bat an eyelid, but I want Burlingame to know that they are losing a customer. I just can't rationalize your prices.
