My wife and I have been taking our animal companions to Holistic Pet Vet for the past five years, and up until recently they were amazing. That changed around the end of 2019. We originally saw Dr. Ericka, and she was absolutely fantastic with our critters. Dr. Bob knows his stuff and is on great terms with our cats..... If only that were the case when we visited with our dogs. One dog was diagnosed with lymphoma at the beginning of the year, and their follow-through was absolutely abysmal. When I say it was terrible, I mean it was nonexistent. "Hey, come buy these supplements" became their de facto response. There was no troubleshooting and there was no attempt at providing better care for our old girl as she neared the end of her life. All the while having been a patient of this vet clinic for HALF of her life. These days, it feels like we are passed around to whomever the new veterinarian is. It's not about continuity of care, and it's certainly not about providing a solid quality of care. This, to me, sounds like a money making venture to push as many supplements as possible, all the while providing subpar care. I get it, 2020 is rough, but guys, you need to up your game before you start losing clients. Dr. Bob is the man! If you want heal your pet from disease instead of only treating symptoms and getting no where, you want to see Dr. Bob. He's legit and knows his stuff. And every time my husband and I take our cat to see him, we just feel better. Our cat was really struggling with IBD and after seeing Dr. Bob and getting on his plan, she's doing completely better and I feel like we've gotten a lot more extra time with her. I am writing this review feeling an overwhelming sense of gratitude for the staff at Holistic Pet Vet Clinic and the amazing level of care and compassion provided to our 8 year old Golden Retriever, Macy. We first visited Dr Bob and his amazing team after receiving a recommendation given to us by our Dog Sitter. Our dog was struggling with severe food allergies and; although we did not know it at the time, a bigger and more detrimental auto-immune issue as well. To this point, we had been going down the traditional "western" veterinarian route, hearing differing opinions & recommendations at every turn. We kept running into walls and our dog was becoming more ill all along. Eventually, Macy became so sick that we needed to visit a very top-level, and highly reputable emergency facility here in Portland. After spending several thousands of dollars, and hearing even further conflicting information, we finally decided to change course, and consider the recommendation we had received and visit Dr Bob. Upon our first visit the difference was clear. At this point in time, Macy was suffering with a dinner plate sized festering infection on her low back/ hip area. Dr Bob spent a full hour with me and Macy, simply getting to know us, observing the dog and her symptoms and reading through our records. Eventually we were sent home with several dietary supplements and a topical treatment to ease her discomfort and stimulate her healing. Additionally, Dr Bob recommended putting Macy on a raw diet (we selected a product made by Northwest Naturals). We were skeptical, feeling frustrated and had already spent far more money than we thought we ever would on a pet. But we thought "let's give this one more try". THANK GOODNESS we did! We got Macy home, got her settled, administered her first dosages of her new herbs and fed her her new food. To our amazement, Macy began healing almost immediately. Her bright and playful spirit came back and she clearly was feeling much better. I could go on for ever, but I will not. Instead, I want to thank Dr Bob and team for all they do. If you're an insurance user who isn't super well-informed about how insurance works in the vet industry take my experience as a lesson, at least a lesson learned for THIS clinic. Having seen previous reviews about the high costs and how they come in for a small thing and end up with a big bill, I was very specific about the fact that I had insurance for the cat needed a place that took the insurance. (By 'take the insurance' I assumed it would be understood the same way as it is in every other insurance process, even CAR insurance- when you have an accident and you file a claim, the repairer BILLS THE INSURANCE... I had no idea what was coming.) After 1-an email back and forth that confirmed they took the insurance and that they would be happy to see the cat for the condition I suspected...2-some phone calls during which I was very specific about instructing her how the billing process works and when doing so that Nationwide would pay them directly, and 3- even gave them a COPY of the claim form (!!) no one said a word to me until I arrived for my cats appointment where they refused to do any of that and told me I'd have to pay up front. Having read all those reviews, I was certain to get this clarified BEFORE my cat was taken back so, luckily, I wasn't hit with a stupid out of pocket before learning the lesson. Welp, back to the drawing board. I won't be going here for services as at best- their phone staff do not listen to you at all, and at worst, their office procedures are deceptive and bait-n-switchy. I have been seeing Dr Ulbrich for years, for both my dog and my cat, and he is always so thorough and kind. He is extremely knowledgeable and present with you and your pet. I have referred my best friend who lives in California to him, and she is a very picky New Yorker, and a good homeopath - she said the same thing! Very good and very thorough. Good homeopaths - whether for people or pets, are worth every penny because the medicine is so deep and healing. Along with everything else they do, I love that they use homeopathic medicine, which is some of the most gentle and powerful medicine out there. This is the cheapest place in Portland I've found to purchase Rad Cat. They also have a huge freezer full of different sizes so they always have plenty to purchase so you don't feel like you're depleting them if you choose to stock up. Their other cat supplies are also pretty inexpensive, comparatively, such as Bachs Rescue Remedy, Feliway, etc. Services are a little more expensive than other vets but I believe in only the best care for my "children" and holistic care is something I believe full heartedly in. The first exam per cat (I have two) was half off.... I appreciate that the doctors make the visit as short as necessary without rushing. They only charge for the minutes the exam took place, so if the exam takes 20 minutes that's all they bill you for, not the full hour. They have technicians do as much as possible to keep costs down. Also, unlike most vets, they don't try to sell you tons of vaccinations, only the ones absolutely necessary. (Cats can develop tumors from vaccinations so over vaccinating has become a real issue.) As indoor cats, mine only need two shots each. That saves money as well. They also offer non-anesthetic teeth cleaning for cats. My boy, who fought us like crazy at home when we got a cat toothbrush anywhere near him, was apparently calm through the entire cleaning. It's sad that with all the grain in cat food that cats need their teeth cleaned. But that's another story. Both doctors are very nice and the entire staff really seems to love animals. It's an easy going atmosphere where you can let your animals off the leash or out of their kennel. Feliway infusers keep animals relatively calmer and, if they need it, technicians will rub Bach's Rescue Remedy cream on their ears and pads of their feet. I love that they give you a welcome packet filled with information such as how to make your own cat food and natural (cheap!) flea prevention/control techniques as well as other goodies that gives you knowledge so your cats live long healthy lives. I haven't taken my kitten in for spaying yet. The doctor says that it's important to wait until six months or first heat... If cats aren't fully mature when spayed, their estrogen will radically drop and their bones might become more brittle. Even though the surgery is more here, they sold me because of this statement on their site: "Our surgical patients routinely receive post surgical acupuncture, post surgical laser, homeopathic pain management, and herbal formulas to assist the body in detoxifying from anesthesia. All surgery patients are gently recovered in the arms of a caring staff member until they are safely on their feet." I'll report back after her treatment. read more

I came here just because my mobile vet recommended based on what I was looking for - I wanted a good holistic/naturopathic vet who does not believe every pet must be re-vaccinated every single year and this is the primary reason that I continue to take my pup here. This clinic is more expensive than the most - I'd say expect to pay at least double so you won't be surprised when you go to "check out". Dr. Ulbrich is good, but he's lacking bedside manner (I tend to think he knows this, but maybe not). If you're an emotional dog mama like I am, you'll think he could work on the empathy area... Dr. Tennant is nicer and sweeter, but she doesn't strike me as thorough. I like that their staff doesn't have high turnovers like some of other vet offices I've been to. I also like that they have Sat hours. They have Standard Process items (it's a naturopathic brand of meds/suppliements) that they charge at very reasonable prices. Most importantly for me (and the reason I'm giving them 4, instead of 3 stars), they don't insist on re-vaccinating my seizure dog (read on it; it's dangerous and unnecessary, especially if your dog has seizures). Not every vet will treat or deal with a dog (no matter what) if the dog has not been vaccinated over and over again. read more

Great vet! My two urchins had been suffering for several years with skin and ear issues that many trips to other vet(s) and lots of injury to my wallet couldn't fix. I finally found this holistic practice and learned so much about food, nutrition, and the best approach for healing the issues my pups have. Dr. Erika Halle spent a considerable amount of time with me answering all of my questions, examining my dogs and providing a plan suitable for them specifically. I didn't feel the least bit rushed nor did I feel as though I was being led to buy anything I didn't need. The cost of the examination and medications was on the high side, but the knowledge I received was invaluable. I researched and researched because I knew the time was getting close. I took their reviews on Yelp to heart and made the appointment. I had a horrendous experience since Dr. Tennant left....Dr. Tennant was fantastic, caring and always communicated with me...e.g. If I had to take my pet to the emergency...she would call the next day to see how she was doing, this happened every time when she was my vet and if I had a question, she would personally call me back, especially when my cat was so ill....a very caring and professional vet! When she left, it all changed, the new vet Dr. (Raines) Halle never called, after I had to take my dog to the emergency vet twice. The management changed and staff changed twice (I see it changed again), the new staff members (not all) acted unprofessional and could not handle my high-anxiety dog. My poor dog was high anxiety due to an injury she sustained at another vet...she was never that way before and when I became a patient I told them why, I was upfront and honest to let them know why she acted the way she did, so they could help her accordingly and understand my concerns as well; btw, she is only 7lbs. When my dog got too anxious Dr. Tennant would step in and calm her with a soft voice, gentle hand, and patience.....that is caring and compassion....But all that changed with the new staff, and management. The new staff could not handle her, did not know how to calm her, she fought them because she was scared and they did nothing to help her with that, except offer rescue remedy which does not work; this made me very distressed as well, greatly. Because I questioned the prices and care, I was asked to find another vet by Dr. (Raines) Halle because of some inflammatory statements that was given by management. This concerned the non-anesthetic dental cleanings that are too expensive, other providers do the same job, are accommodating and for a more reasonable price. After Dr. Tennant left, I stayed with holistic pet vet clinic because it was close and I guess out of habit and I have been ill myself and I am a permanently disabled person. But it was not until I found my other two vets that I realized the comparison...The new vets I have seen are kind, compassionate and take the time with special needs, like high anxiety. Let's face it, the majority of veterinary care is of the pets family/people and you must know how to communicate compassionately and understand their concerns in this aspect. My dog is so much better now, and actually looks forward to going to her new vets because they treat her like a little princess which helps her so much, truly. I was recommended to one of my new vets by professional business owner that sells pet supplies after I told her of my bad experiences...thank goodness! She is my service dog, and other than going to holistic pet vet clinic, she is perfect, she is a trained therapy dog as well and interacts with people, children and babies so positively...in every way, that is a fact! I have had vast experience with veterinarians, I managed my beloved Angel's renal failure for 4 years...I am on record as having maintained a good quality of life the longest for a canine with renal failure, that is my level of commitment to my family! Let's be honest, vets are people too, but the big difference is the level of care...I have family in veterinary field, so I don't say this without information and input from other vets/veterinary staff. When it comes to care...compare...see other vets and ask a lot of questions...it is the really good vets that will answer your questions, and take a little time to help your animals that may have fear issues, like mine. I noticed on Facebook, that two of the employees are writing 5 star reviews...to up the ratings? Most of the positive ones on here are really old. read more

I took my dogs there for several years and they have had a big turn over . Staff are not knowledgeable and unprofessional it's almost a Circus amosphere now at the place . They messed up on charges and now they are holding my dogs blood and won't send it out and they are the ones that made the mistake. Even talked to office manager. I am new to the area and wanted a vet that wasn't in the medical mode of drug and invasive test everything. I was so disappointed for a number of reasons. It was very expensive-it turns out they are about 3 x the price for an initial visit as other vets. Dr Bob was not thorough at all. He barely touched my dog. His attitude was arrogant and unwelcoming. We left saying he has obviously been doing this job too long. We had some issues we discussed with him- he read over a heart report and said our dog only had 10% compromise. We were happy to hear this but then he wants us to buy all these heart supplements??? We did buy one and our dog got diarrhea. I called the office but the Dr never called us back. All the tests were so much more expensive than other places. I did a lot of research after we saw him and found a much better vet. What a waste of time and money that was! read more

After receiving poor care from my local companion pet clinic, I decided to try out a holistic vet for my pregnant Pomeranian. I saw Dr. Schaefer who was very knowledgeable and had a ton of useful information for our upcoming puppies. She prescribed a holistic herb called sepia to help with being a good focused mom and another herb to make sure there scull's were closed before birth. We had three healthy puppies. After the birth I called Dr. Schaefer several times with concerns about the placenta not being expelled and the milk not coming in. She told me to get an herb called pulsatilla, which really worked well, milk came in within 24hrs of giving her the supplement. They were more expensive than any other vet I had been to, although my office visit was about 20-30 mins long, I did end up paying over $120 for everything, but in this case you get what you pay for. I have 4 cats. My first 2 cats went elsewhere in their younger years and I kept changing vets because I wasn't happy with the service I was getting from those other offices. I feed my cats the raw chicken diet and was told by the other veterinarians that this wasn't the diet they would recommend and kept trying to sell me their brand of canned food. Not only does the Holistic Pet Vet Clinic suport the raw diet, but they are the best bunch of people. When my other 2 kittens joined my family and needed to be neutered, I didn't worry that the staff there would take good care of them and treat them well. Yes, they are more spendy, but it is absolutely worth it. The doctors and technicians are never in a rush to get you out the door. They answer questions thoroughly. They are very friendly. They don't try to sell you things that you don't need. I love them!! read more
