When we first walked in, my thoughts were, 'they're not going to have plumbing parts...' I was totally wrong. This hardware store has it all - everything you expect in a local hardware store and then some. The entry to the store is filled with unique items for your home, trinkets, and gifts. It's a visual delight. Then you get into the heart of the store and there you'll find housewares and small appliances, landscape supplies, light bulbs...the list goes on. They even offer refills of cleaning supplies for environmentally conscious shoppers. Don't forget about upstairs which houses the plumbing supplies amongst other things. I think I was lucky because I heard the mechanic pretty busy. And ... hurray. It starts better, it runs better, and so far it hasn't stalled out again. And ... the cost was quite fair. Since I avoid big box stores when I can, I have only this simple comparison. Last year I needed pressure treated 2x4 sticks for firewood racks. They were maybe 25% less at a big box store but then I found out the cheaper ones are not rated for ground contact. Those that I later bought at Allerdice were. The difference was worth it to me. I'm not a fanatic about shopping locally. I do shop online, but when I can, I go local.

While the clerk was not familiar with the exact product I was looking for, Glisten Washing Machine cleaner, he did accompany me to the isle where he said it should be if they carried it. We both searched and didn't see it. He stopped another clerk and asked him if he was familiar with the product. He was not. I showed them both a photo of the product and neither of them recognized it as a product they offered for sale. I commented that my earlier online search said they had it in stock, so I began one final scan down the aisle commenting that the orange package color should really stand out. Low and behold, it did! There was only one of the product left. I decided to push my luck. Another item that my web search told me was available and in stock at both Walmart and Robinson's was a Presta to Schrader valve stem adapter (Google it). Walmart didn't have it. The Ace staff took me to another individual who was able to look it up on their computer and tell me that they could order it and I'd have it on Monday. I'm writing this on Sunday, if it doesn't arrive on Monday I'll be back to update this review. I like the helpfulness of all the staff here and appreciate the extent they went to in order to please a customer. BTW, my final item that I was shopping for, Pro Products Res Care, I ordered from Amazon since no one locally carried it.

When I walked in someone asked if I needed help, and I explained what I was looking for. Actually, I explained it three times because the person seemed to have trouble either hearing me or understanding English. I can't put my finger on it, but it was a bit frustrating. I first asked if they had assortment boxes and she went to check. She came back and said no, so I asked for specific sizes which she had to check. Finally, she brought everything they had out. I asked for two packages in each of the two sizes I needed, but they only had one of each so I bought both. Their credit card machine wasn't working right and it took multiple tries with multiple cards to get the deal done. I had some free time while they were searching for stuff so I looked around. This place sells a motley collection of things such as tools (wrenches, saws), hardware (caster wheels, chain), adhesives (caulk, Loctite), and power tools. Many of the things had a coating of dust, and nothing was priced out. For a place like this, customer service is important. Not only did it take them 20 minutes to get my transaction done, but another commercial customer who needed help couldn't get the information he needed on some products. Did I mention that there were 5 employees in the store this morning, but they were more interested in the Halloween donuts that someone had brought in. I should have just bought the stuff online. McMaster Carr has the same things for seven times less. Service is fast. Payment is easy. I can only recommend coming here if you know what you need, know that they have it, are willing to pay cash, and have some free time.

The…read moremost recent was to pick up an online order, and as always, the staff was welcoming, friendly, and helpful. I personally like that the store has a sort of corner shop vibe although it's not exactly small. The store is airways well lit and aisles are clearly labeled, and again the staff here have been exceptionally helpful. The news BBQ section in the back atrium is impressive even if I'm not the biggest cook in the family. And I also saw a custom shirt section although by the looks of it, I may be able to customise more than t-shirts. I hope they keep improving and stay open for a long time.

And that's just the stuff I've bought over the past few months. They've got tons more stuff, most of which I don't even know what it is because I'm an unhandy city boy. Perhaps this is a small-town thing, but the staff here seems like they know...everything. They've got valuable advice if you want it, and I'm betting they can either come out and fix stuff, or know who you can hire to do so if you can't do it yourself. Some of the items can be a little pricey compared to a big box store or the internet, but you're also paying for expertise and convenience, and shopping local is always a good thing. Allen and Palmer has a variety of employees that are experts on in home problems and answering questions. They also have several guys on staff that are Master level plumbers. James Decker works on the plumbing crew there and seems to know his way around anything mechanical, plumbing, heating, etc.... There is undoubtedly a bit of mark up on items purchased here. This is because they have to ship things so far. And indeed it would cost you more than the difference to drive to somewhere more urban to purchase the same items. I would highly recommend this location for almost anything you might need in the Northville - Sacandaga Lake area.
