They carriy a selection of plywood, treated lumber, dimension lumber, hardwood and engineered lumber. To make things simpler its just a lowes or home depot that is locally owned and smaller in size. What a disgrace to call this a family run and family oriented business. It is nothing of the kind. Jay-K was a legit family run and oriented business. I understand the purpose of a business is to make a profit but to do so at the expense of the community and the employees is not. I would recommend Lincoln Davies, Ilion Lumber or many other of the small family owned and operated suppliers in the area every day over Curtis Lumber which is simply concerned with the dollars at the end of the day rather than the wellness of the community or the future of its staff. I have been very successful in my career and have had the opportunity to shop at many Curtis locations. I shopped at them only because they had bought up the local stores and in some cases shut them down and there simply was no alternative within a decent range. I just paid the price and went on with things. Almost always, the employees (salespeople and yard workers) were top notch but boy oh boy did I hear many complaints about the management. Both from said employees and other customers. It seemed like policies were designed to alienate and annoy the customers, the people who keep a store open. Yes they offer a military discount but to make it so that EVERY TIME I SHOP, I must go through a ten question interrogation, pull out ID's, ...spend an extra 5 minutes in line to do so and annoy anyone in line behind me (which actually there rarely is) to get a 10 percent discount which might just might bring the item(s) cost in line with the competitors prices seams ridiculous. Put me on file until I am dead and when my name pops up...give me the discount or simply do not offer it at all. Everything they do seems to annoy me as a customer. One time I was told an item was in stock and when I stopped in to pick up said item. I was told "in stock" meant that one of the Curtis locations had at least one of the item in inventory. That could have been Ballston Spa or even Vermont. I guess the management at Curtis does not consider that a lie and maybe technically it isn't but to mislead a customer in that way is just another example of hot to disenfranchise a customer. Curtis service during the covid outbreak is abysmal. You call during business hours to place an order, wait 10 rings for an operator to pick up and transfer you to a specific department, where it rings 6 times and then goes to an answering machine. I would chalk it up to a fluke, but this is now the third time I've experienced a complete lack of customer service during the pandemic. It's a pattern. 6/23/24 - I relocated back home over a year ago and after calling to ensure we did not have to make an appointment, we made the 2 hour drive with our new office/garage plans. Our intent was to sit down with a project resource and order windows, doors and siding. After arriving we were guided to the appropriate area where a project resource kind of greeted us and pointed at a table where we began to roll out our plans and attempted to tell him what we were needing. The CL employee wasn't even listening, nor did he sit down. He kept talking over us saying we needed a "window detail sheet with exact measurements". I showed him the measurements were on the plans but again, he was basically walking away at that point. I also tried to redirect to siding and doors but he was very rude and dismissive. We were able to get an appointment with ABC Supply in Queensbury who are tremendously helpful and kind and appreciate the $50k in materials needed for our building. read more

The place is a absolute JOKE. We are thinking about redoing our bathroom and saw a tile that we liked. We called the store multiple times to inquire about the price after thinking it over. We left multiple messages and NO ONE returned our call. We had to ask for the manager of the store which could not do anything and just passed us to our "designer". I always like to support local businesses, and so when we bought my first house I was pretty psyched about having this right near by. They have great service, clearance items (I got a $175 custom order front door lock for $15!!!), tools (And a damn good selection), lighting, raw wood, decking, doors and windows, plumbing and electrical.. Even work clothes. Out back at the contractor location you can buy insulation, and roofing and all other building supplies. The folks are always nice, knowledgeable and conversational. My wife and I went here to work with one of their kitchen designers as we wanted to remodel our kitchen. I had to first call to make an appointment, and after a couple of weeks we had our first appointment with Bob Y. He was friendly and knowledgeable and we thought we were in good hands. After a few more weeks went by, Bob even came out to the house to look over our kitchen and we thought we came up with a good plan. After 8 weeks went by and still no design, and after repeated emails, we finally got a chance to review his design and ideas. But he said he wanted to do it virtually. So... Ok even though it is more than 2 years into Covid, I get it, so we agree to do it virtually. Which quite honest was a **** Show and technically he couldn't get the web meeting going, but we figured it out. However as we went through the design, I realized that after 6 weeks of this being on his plate, he really threw this together at the last minute, and the ideas we discussed at our home were not even implemented or what we even wanted. So he said he would re-do them but that was over a month ago and have yet to hear from him. (Or anyone for that matter) so we went to Builders Kitchen and had a much better experience and ordered our kitchen cabinets there. read more

Just abhorrent behavior from this clown towards myself when simply returning excess material. I vowed I would never return and its now been 16 years since I spent a penny in that place. Do yourself a favor and shop around if you are doing a kitchen. The quality of the materials is not in question, but the customer support is absolutely appalling. I have no idea how they stay in business if they treat all their customers like garbage, but I guess as long as they get one sale out of you that's fine with their management. Still haven't resolved issues over one year after the order was placed. Cabinets did not fit, were not ordered correctly, arrived damaged. Assured it would all be taken care of, and guess what they lied! Multiple calls, emails give me zero response. After dropping way too much money on a nice kitchen setup you would think they would treat you well, but it's just not the case. They don't care and it shows. read more

Rating a 1/5 pending a response from Curtis. ordered $10,000 worth of bathroom material months ago and paid the require 50%. Received a call saying the order was in after 4 weeks or so. So far so good. As many may be aware, home contractors are backed up so we postponed delivery which they said was fine. Contractor at the house now and we arranged to pay the remaining 50% and set up delivery. When they reviewed the "Bath" order they noticed items weren't all there, items ON the invoice and paid for. So they say they will order what they were supposed to order and hopefully they'll have my stuff in a month, which will be 2 weeks after my contractor will be finished with the other work we bought another $5,000 in materials from Curtis for. Are they going to supply me a new contractor? Do they realize if it's their mistake they need to move heaven and earth to fix it immediately? Apparently not, I guess people are doing so much work they don't need the business. I will update this post if they actually expediate my order as they should. Curtis Lumber gives me wood...literally and figuratively. Curtis Lumber is a woodworker's wet dream come (zing?) true. I've spent more money on exotic hardwood than I care to admit. I'm not even talking about Brazilian hookers. Thanks to CL, I've built three guitars and have wood to complete 2 more **shakes fist at Goog Cal for manifesting my lack of luthiery time at this point in my life**. Every type of wood they stock is the best grade available that I have seen to date, beating out Rockler, other exotic hardwood dealers, and many internet retailers. Just a list of some of the woods I've purchased here: purpleheart, wenge, padauk, spalted maple, rosewood, zebrawood, mahogany, flamed maple, cocobolo, lacewood, bloodwood, ebony, and a many others. Every board I have hand selected out of the massive stacks of worthy wood. The employees encourage you to move the piles of wood around to find the perfect piece. I had one guy help me move hundreds of boardfeet of cocobolo just to get to a piece on the bottom. Hellllloooooo cocobolo fingerboard **salivates**. They have a rule about cutting off only the ends of a board, so if you want a piece in the middle, you need to buy a bit more, but often times they will just cut out the middle section anyways if you ask nicely. Yeah, they have tools. But you'd be a tool to pay some of the prices they are asking. Most of the items are fairly priced and I've picked up countless clamps, Titebond, etc, but some of the power and specialty tools are cheaper elsewhere. They do at least have a great selection of router bits. To this day, I cannot get over the fact that a town called "Ballston Spa" even exists. tl;dr: omg, wood. read more

I know of no other place anywhere that you can buy quarter sawn oak by the linear foot. Oak has some very interesting grain characteristics. If you have ever seen Stickley furniture mission style you know what quarter sawn ork looks like. To produce quartered stock think of the tree like the circle of a pie. First you cut the log into quarters making 4 triangle parts. If you divide the quartered pieces down the center and cut from there the rich tiger grain hidden in the wood comes out. There is huge waste to making stock this way. When Oak trees were everywhere at the turn of the century it was common practice to use it everywhere in a house. These days you just dont see it because you can't get it anywhere unless you have it milled yourself..... or you can go to Curtis. Plus they have a huge array of solar panels on the roof. Good Evening, I came to the Ballston Spa Store today to get some information about building a garage. I was greeted at the door by two employees and asked where I should go to get some questions answered about a garage. Pleasantly she guided me in the right direction. When I got to the Project center I was told to go back to the desks behind them that I would be helped. There were two people at desks, women was assisting another couple so I went to the gentleman. I asked if he could help me and rudely asked what I wanted. Thinking I was interrupting something he was working on I brushed off his rudeness. I sat down and explained that I was looking to get some assistance on a 30' x 30' garage. Hoping there may be a Package- no luck he told me biggest was 24' x 30'. I then asked if we could do a custom build. I had a photo from on line of a metal building that we had looked up and was trying to price compare. Richard Haskins (only know this because he tossed his card at me at the end) then started to ask questions. I know a good deal of what where looking for but was hoping he could assist with other questions. Instead of politely assisting he grew more and more irritated with me. When he had enough of me he tossed the photo copies that he took of the garage that I had and told me "just right down your information and I get back to you next month, that's how much work I have to do" This man is rude, demeaning and a down right asshole. I don't know if its because I am a women, but I strongly suggest you speak to him about treating everyone with respect. I'm really unsure why I even stayed and put up with his attitude. I did not want to make a scene. I was so upset that I didn't even bother to look at all of the other items I was going to purchase. Entry door with storm door, large blinds for our porch and a wheel barrow. I felt so stupid when I left your store and I'm not a stupid person. My order was not complete when delivered. Salesman, David, FORGOT to order the hardware, a\ one of the cabinets and the toe kick. He miss measured a door which arrived about 4 inches to narrow. When he reordered the missing items, he said they would be in within a week or two. Actual delivery was 6 weeks. My contractor was unable to finish the install and has to return. (another week wait) When I called this AM asking when the delivery would take place, they had LOST the order!!!! After several hours they FOUND it!!! On the delivery truck. This was my second consecutive customer service issue in my last two visits there. Was looking to get five gallons of deck paint, so I was standing in the middle isle, looking at a product while the only employee in the paint department was talking with an elderly lady at her station. After fifteen minutes of waiting there, and hoping that I would soon be able to get some help, the worker began retrieving paint for the lady. Meanwhile two cashiers at the checkout, and another employee in their area, had been looking in my direction at various times. Finally, I decided to leave, and expressed my disdain to the checkout people for the lack of service, of which they seemed unjaded about. After leaving, I decided to go back in and express my grief to the manager at the store. The manager happened to be deep in conversation on the phone next to the checkout, and seemed oblivious to the situation. So, I left a second time, and decided to go back in and secure a pamphlet about the product I was interested in. In my final exit I noticed that the manager was still on his phone. I have purchased two sliding doors there in the past and have never written a negative review for any retail store. But, this is the 'iceing on the cake'. I bought all the materials for my new house here- the lumber, roofing, siding, doors and windows- about 100 thousand. I moved in 4 months ago. My back door is defective. Supposedly it is an adjustable door that somehow needs to be readjusted every time you open it. When it rains, my kitchen floods, not just a little water but the entire area gets soaked. The door does not stay closed and it takes the muscle of a weight lifter to lock it. I spoke to the sales person and she was going to have someone come and look at it. I waited two months and called again. Same story, they were going to send one of their tech guys out. Two weeks later, no one has come over and things have gotten worse. The door and floor got soaked during a rain storm then froze during the night. The weather strip ripped off the door when it became frozen to the ground. Now the door is stuck in a closed but unlocked position and is not usable. Thanks to great customer support. read more

Totally disappointed with TRYING to get a new kitchen design. Phone calls, even trying to set up an appointment was NOT GOOD. I should have gone with my first instinct with the very first call I made to CL. But their ads were so 'inviting'; I kept with it. After much emailing back and forth, with some renderings, I was told I couldn't have many of the ideas I'd requested, AND the ballpark quote was astronomical! WHAT? To 'buy' a kitchen that is didn't want? I think not. I was going to CAN the whole idea of a new kitchen, but DID find ...yup, believe it or not..the most incredible kitchen designer in a big box store...and was provided with everything I'd asked for, (and then some) for LESS that half the CL price.
