Asada and Lengua tacos
Karen Y.

Their truck literally says it's the best tacos I'm town and they're not lying. One of the rare places that actually make their own tortillas! I'll keep it brief, but basically visit this place if you want the best tacos of your life. They're located in the Safeway shopping center in a little corner. Prices are higher about $3.50 for a taco with an extra charge for lengua or fish. I ordered the asada and lengua tacos which were fantastic and came with a grilled jalapeño and 2 dipping sauces. Their platters, tortas and burritos are ok and I recommend sticking with the tacos. The horchata on the other hand was actually the best I've had in the area and isn't grainy at all! They also do take credit card or cash. And you can make orders through the phone. All in all, this is a fantastic place for tacos!

Carne Asada Platter

They had a CASH ONLY sign this one time I visited on 5/07/2021. Thought I'd surprise David with a whole bunch of food on my way over to him, so I swung by this food truck which was in a Sunoco gas station on Darnestown Rd, right next to the Safeway. Luckily there weren't any other cars waiting on food because if there were it probably would have been complicated, not a whole lot of space in that gas station. I ordered 2 tacos (chorizo and carnitas), 1 carne asada burrito, 1 carne asada platter. Tacos: the previous 2 reviews complimented the tacos, so thought I'd try them out. Not a big fan of corn tortillas, and they were a little oily in my opinion, with not a whole lot of filling (Taco Bar gives more). Wasn't super impressed. Burrito: probably the best thing of what I ordered. Burrito was filled with lots of carne asada, plenty of rice, some lettuce, sour cream. Very flavorful and the carbs asada wasn't as dry as it was as in the platter. Carne asada platter: meat was a little dry in my opinion. Also came with two pancake (?) like tortillas, very thick and almost like naan. Didnt enjoy personally, David ended up whipping out his own flour tortillas lol. Comes with rice, black beans, lettuce and a scoop of pico de gallo and avocado. Overall, I hate to compare to Taco Bar on Fields Rd, but between the two I'd choose taco bar. Prices are comparable and taco bar gives more meat on their tacos. The woman at the counter was very nice but spoke very little English, so it made things a little difficult in placing my order and took a few tries to make sure. And she didn't seem to know the prices posted on the side of the truck because when I asked her how much was the total, she couldn't tell me, either that or she wasn't able to tell me the total due to the communication barrier (FYI no receipt, she pointed to a posted CASH ONLY sign on the window, did all of her calculations on a piece of paper). So I just calculated in my own and rounded up + 20% tip. I felt bad that she was the only one staffing the truck and making the orders too.

Pastor, Chorizo tacos - So good!!
Helen C.

I am very pleased to be the first reviewer of this amazing food truck. I have been coming here at least once a week for a few months - it has become almost an addiction. This place is hands down the best taco place in the area. The tortilla - which is so often overlooked but is the most important element in a proper taco - has the right amount of corn flavor that blankets the meat inside and is perfectly moist and soft and doesn't crumble or break. The meat inside is incredibly flavorful and savory. I have tried most of its meat options available and have been very impressed by them all. The meat is seasoned and spiced generously and cooked moist and juicy. Pastor and chorizo are my favorites, but I continue to get pollo and asada every now and then. This place is already so popular that people line up to place orders at this food truck located right next to a gas station. I hope this place will continue to do well and establish its taco kingdom in Gaithersburg, MD.

The experience was lovely. Service was super friendly and…read morethe cashier, who also takes the order was helpful. The space was small with high top seating (bar like) and 3 small tables in the middle. There are fresh condiments, pepper sauces, pica de Gallo, ect. My favorites were the beef taco and fish taco. The quesadilla was tasty as well. The establishment was very clean and well ran.

Love the salsa bar -- the salsas taste fresh and there's something for everyone. If you aren't vegetarian the chicken is tasty and the chicken burrito is a safe, decent choice. Overall Negatives: This is not a great place if you are vegetarian. I know they have veg items but they don't get the same attention to flavor and quality that the non-vegetarian items get. That's why my husband rated his chicken burrito higher than I rated my veggie tacos. We had more misses than hits here. Chicken burrito: minimal beans, lots of rice and pulled chicken that both had great flavor. A marginal hit, just really needed some texture because a tortilla filled with just chicken isn't a great burrito. Its's a "just fine" burrito. Veggie tacos: barely any beans or rice. Mostly big chucks of avocado (weird to not dice it) and sliced tomato and onion (again weird -- just dice it). All topped with a dairy bomb of sour cream and queso fresco that caused the whole taco to lose its structural Integrity. Desperately needed lots of salsa for flavor because nothing else had any. The thing is, you can make rice flavorful. You can make beans with flair and fun and taste. They just don't here. Disappointing miss. Nachos: good chips, good cheesy sauce. Barely any beans again and the big slices of avocado, onion, and tomato (about the size you see on a burger) made it difficult to eat anything but the chips and cheese sauce. Not "nachos" and definitely not a hit for us. Unfortunately this just wasn't for us. It's great to have stuff on your menu that accommodates different types of diners but it's important to actually show the "other" food equal attention to quality and flavor.

I've been coming here for years, and it's one of those places that never disappoints. The food is consistently delicious, the atmosphere is lively, and you always know you're going to leave happy. I'm originally from Honduras, and one of our staple dishes... arguably THE staple dish... is the baleada. A fresh flour tortilla filled with refried beans, cheese, and crema, with the option to add extras like eggs, avocado, or different meats. I knew this had to be where Kyler experienced his very first baleada. To say it was a success would be an understatement. Kyler isn't the most adventurous eater, so getting his stamp of approval is a pretty big deal. He's officially a fan for life! We were there with my mom, and all three of us ordered some variation of a baleada along with pupusas to share. I also had to introduce Kyler to our version of horchata, which is different from the Mexican horchata he was used to. As an added bonus, we happened to visit during the World Cup, and the energy in the restaurant made the experience even more fun. Between the familiar flavors, sharing a piece of my culture with someone I love, and the consistently great food, this meal ended up being one of the highlights of our trip back to Maryland. If you've never had a baleada before, let La Casita be your introduction. You won't regret it.

I recently stopped back into La Gula Mexicana after not visiting for a while, and I'm happy to say…read moreit's just as good as I remembered. This used to be one of my regular go-to spots, especially when I was craving a fresh veggie burrito, and this visit reminded me exactly why I loved it. I ordered my usual veggie burrito with extra cilantro, guacamole, white onions, and a little corn, and it was absolutely delicious. Every bite was fresh, flavorful, and packed with quality ingredients. One thing I've always appreciated about this restaurant is the consistency. The ingredients are always fresh, the portions are generous, and you can tell everything is prepared with care. The customer service was just as memorable as the food. The staff was kind, courteous, and welcoming, making me feel like a valued customer from the moment I walked in. It's always nice when you return to a favorite restaurant after some time away and discover that the quality hasn't changed. This visit definitely reminded me why La Gula Mexicana became one of my favorite local spots, and I'll be adding it back into my regular rotation. I was literally told "get it yourself"…read more I've been dining here since they've opened and usually love it! However, when the young woman brought my food she just set it down without saying anything, like she's dropping off mail in a box or something... They usually ask if you want anything, sauces, cutlery, etc... So when she came back around I asked if I could have a fork and knife and she grimaced at me and said "you can get it yourself behind the counter"... I reminded her there is a tip selection on check out, and she said " yes I know, I'll get you your fork, but I'm just letting you know that when you check out, you can go back there and get it yourself "with even more attitude. At that point, I told her I didn't want it anymore, and she just walked away. Disrespect for no reason...
