I went to Hijos Del Maiz for lunch after some running some errands on the weekend. The service was very fast and the person taking my order was friendly. I got three carne asada tacos and the guacamole, chips and chicharron. The restaurant imports the corn for their tortillas from Mexico and this really helped to elevate the carne asada tacos. The tacos were well seasoned, the salsas added a nice acidity and brightness to the meat, and the tortillas are incredible. The guacamole, chips, and chicharron were also great. The guacamole was creamy and balanced out the richness of the chicharron. Overall, I really enjoyed my meal at Hijos Del Maiz and I will definitely be back. read more

Killer Food I heard about this Bright Yellow Food Truck from a friend and set off to find it. The young lady that took my order was pleasant and even delivered my order to my car. Pretty good! Was recommended by a friend saying they were the most authentic hes had in this area. The quality is good- hunky pieces of juicy steak and the cheese wasn't too heavy. The tortilla tasted fresh but it was a bit dry- id still prefer that over greasy ones. The chips were the best I've had. I was super excited to try Hijos Del Maiz after hearing so much about it, and I can't wait to eat there again soon! Everything is prepared fresh, and special care is taken with presentation even though the orders are to go. I loved the pickled vegetables (escabeche) that came with the tostadas which gave it some bite, and I thought the price was extremely reasonable given the quantity and quality of the food. The beef barbacoa was tender and flavorful. The red sauce on the side has some kick! Green sauce is very mild. Looking forward to trying more dishes. read more

Hard to miss, bright yellow food truck serving authentic Mexican eats made by a Michelin trained chef! The Michelin part and the fact that they nixtamalize their own corn tortillas had me intrigued. Located outside a gas station parking lot, got gas and some amazing tostadas! Service was quick- about a 5 minute wait. Amazing food at this food truck the torta is the best Ive had and the tacos are excellent. The torta is fried chicken that is perfectly crispy with mayo avocado and some veggies. The bread is soft and sweet. The tacos are fresh with great flavor. I got the bistec, chicken asada, and barbacoa. All were rick and tender. The chicken had a nice balance of seasonings that I enjoyed. Service was quick you get a buzzer that lets you know when it's ready. Really enjoy the Mexican food from this food truck! Recently tried the food when they were at saints row brewing. It was a busy day (lager fest) but they were efficient and the food came out quickly. They also let me order just one item instead of multiples which were on the menu which I appreciated. Got the chicken tostado which was a good size and hit the spot! Also liked their salsa. New food truck alert! I drove 45 minutes in the rain to try tacos from this Michelin rated chef. He's worked in a few highly rated restaurants in DC, and finally has his own spot. A small friendly staff. A simple menu, and just plain delicious food. The pollo asada tacos were great. He hand makes the corn tortillas, which h I usually don't like, but these were delicious. The chicken was juicy and flavorful. It was a street taco done right. The salsa verde was more of an avocado cream. And the pickled habanero onions added a slight kick. The ingredients were fresh. A little pricier than other taco spots but you can tell their tortilla is hand made and quality. My favorite was their carne asada tacos and their beef barbacoa quesadilla was delicious. Wow! I saw this truck on @nomtastickim IG page. I've driven past this spot many times on Rockville Pike. So glad I stopped by. I ordered the tostadas (one refried bean and the other beef barbacoa). Full of flavor and it's like a quick snack just a little messy. The order comes with two tostadas so you can mix and match. I wish I ordered four! Stop by and try it out yourself. Hijos Del Maiz has only been open a few months. The only places I've ever had homemade tortillas from Mexican heirloom corn this fresh and bursting with "that corn flavor only tortillas can have" was at a couple mom and pop non-chain restaurants off the beaten path in Mexico, and Hijos Del Maiz. The meats and veggies are great quality and preparation, you gotta try their barbacoa. The salsas are homemade from scratch. The guac is great. You can buy little condiment sides like "pickled red onions and habaneros" for $0.25 each to heat things up and add variety to each bite. The chef/owner previously worked at Michelin rated restaurants. If you've been satisfied with local Mexican restaurants, you don't have to settle for "satisfied" any more. I've been satisfied with Villa Maya and Los Primos for a number of years, and less than happy with the other Mexican/taco places in Rockville (like Torchy's). I no longer have to settle for just satisfied. Hijos Del Maiz is a new food truck operated by a chef who has Michelin experience and all I can say is WOW. The quality and flavor of the pollo asada and shredded barbacoa is outstanding and I'm salivating just thinking about it as I type this. Fresh tortillas and sauces with homemade taste that will impress foodies too. It is rare to have quality of meat this good in a taco, IMO. I'll be back soon, so glad this option opened up.
