I love Burrito Shak! I have one close to work and one close to home! This review is for the one close to home! I LOVE their tacos but always feel compelled to each both because I love them so much! But my waist line feels otherwise! So I chose the Aloha bowl this time and when I got home, immediately put have in a container for another meal! We had an amazing catered lunch from here today. There were about 30 people and the set up was amazing. The only reason I didn't give 5 stars is because the meat wasn't the best. The chicken was overcooked. However, the salsa was SOOO good and that was some of the best guacamole ever. They packed so many things- Cole slaw, homemade ranch , pico, onions, 2 salsas, corn salsa, and more! I highly recommend this for catering events. You pick a meal you want whether it's a bowl, burrito, or salad, and you pretty much personalize it with a protein of your choice. For fast food this is our #1 go to. Service with a smile. You can assemble your bowl anyway you like and it's huge and delicious! We tend to take it home though since it is very loud in there with little sound absorption and metal chairs on tile floors. read more

I was in the area on vacation and saw this place. I stopped in and ordered The T.I. Burrito. It had pinto beans, rice, shredded cheese, pico de gallo, Baja slaw, guacamole and lime sour cream. It was delicious and oh so filling. I'm surprised I was able to finish it with how big and thick it was. I was really hungry and loved the flavors. First off, let me just say that I really Burrito Shak BUT not this location. I have been to the one in Hampstead, Topsail Island, and Swansboro. Unfortunately, this one did not meet the standard. The staff personalities were as dry as the steak. Nobody greeted anybody. Nobody smiled. Staff didn't even talk to each other. It wasn't welcoming at all. The floor and tables and were dirty. This review is based on comparing this location to the one on 17 in hampstead. The surf city location is using smaller taco shells (less food) at the same price and the bowls at the surf city location are also a little skimpy. The employees at highway 17 are eager to add the extra ingredients and pretty much encourage it, while the surf city location is just the opposite and try to make a customer feel bad about adding toppings. One more thing, their taco hard shells taste a bit off and it makes me wonder if the taco shells need warming up prior to serving just like we would do at home. This is not a problem with the larger shells at the location on 17 in Hampstead. Would I return to this location? Absolutely not. They do have one of those machines that flip around to ask you a question (haha); why are they asking for a tip? Let's see what they don't do - I place my own order, fill my own drink, bring my order to the table, I clean up the table and I pay at the counter and yet they have the nerve to request 15 to 25% tip. When I go to places like this locations, I feel all they want to do is to separate us from our money. I always imagine the owner saying this "It's all about the boat" "I just need their money, they got to eat so who cares about the quality of food and service" Sorry to hit so hard, but there is definitely an attitude problem and it always starts at the top. Veggies, chunks of meat, and cheese mixed and over flowing. It wasn't busy so I'm not sure why the 4 or 5 employees weren't on top of keeping a clean work space. The customer service is great. What little of the food I can eat is good but nothing too over the top except the cheese sauce, which is the only reason I go there. The chips were ok. They were light, crispy, and salty. Unfortunately, randomly I would get a stale chip that would ruin the whole experience. The one thing that disappoints me the most about this place is the lack of being allergy friendly. I don't just mean do they have gluten free but I have an onion allergy that causes me to stop breathing. Unfortunately that means I cant have any lettuce, olives, tomatoes, etc. Because they are unwilling or unable to get some from an uncontaminated area. Every time I've been in there, the lettuce bin looks like salad with salsa dressing, the cheese bin, same thing, and on and on. I know I have an odd allergy but is it so much to ask to be able to accommodate a customer for some non-contaminated shredded lettuce that won't kill me if I eat it. But alas, I know it is not in the realm of possibilities so I only go to burrito shak about once every six months when I really want the cheese sauce, am already at the neighboring publix or surf city town hall, and am willing to pay for something I know I'll enjoy but wish would have been a bit better. Food prep station is disgusting !!! If the owner is reading this is not how to run a place. All the food in the condiments was mixed over there was old dried up veggies with meat and cheese and lettuce all mixed around the counters. Nothing was being wiped down with each new order being placed , all the tables in the restaurant still had food left over from previous people. I didn't allow any of my kids to eat your food and your food went straight to the trash. For seven employees half of them just standing around doing nothing wouldn't be a bad idea if you actually had some of those kids cleaning up. E. coli and salmonella are no joke and it's not fair to customers for anyone to possibly get sick from food contamination or spoiled foods. read more

Took a day trip to Topsail Beach, thought this was a safe bet for a meal since reviews were high but it was the worst! I am questioning people's taste buds but also just looking at the crowd I'm going to assume they never had authentic "fresh-mex" food. Everything seems processed, out of a can or bag. I had better rice from uncle ben. The beans were just beans, no flavor, not even heated. The pork was dry. There were gnats flying around and the tables weren't clean. We were on vacation and we went here once earlier in the week, and even went back before heading home. The staff is friendly and sweet. This location has been open for about a year now and the service has gotten so much better!! It was rough for the first several month they were open but it has gotten much faster and smoother. Think of this as a better chipotle. It has more variety of sauces and combinations in my opinion. I find chipotle chicken to be a little on the spicy side but Burrito Shak chicken is perfect. Still super flavorful but not spicy. And it's all good chicken- no gristle or gross parts. Try the pablano cream sauce. Service was cool and consistent after eating here multiple times, after eating here I got a rincon burrito with chicken and I ended up getting food poisoning from the burrito. I was vomiting gallons of puke and diced up chicken the whole night and regretted eating the burrito very much. I have not been back since. Puke was enough to fill up a 50 gallon drum. read more
