I can't tell you about the chicken fried steak, the chicken salad or anything else coming out of that kitchen. But pie? Oh, I can talk about the pie. First of all, this place is CUTE. It's got that wonderful little small-town Texas feel that makes you want to slow down, look around and buy something homemade before you get back on the road. We couldn't possibly choose just one flavor, because apparently nobody in my family possesses that kind of restraint. We left with slices of cherry, peach, fudge pecan and buttermilk. Let's start with the star of the show. THE CHERRY PIE. 1000000/10. I am not exaggerating when I say this was, without a doubt, the best cherry pie I have ever eaten. It was absolutely spectacular. The whole family agreed. The filling, the flavor, that gorgeous made-from-scratch crust...everything worked. If you put another slice of it in front of me right now, this review would have to wait. The peach surprised me almost as much because I DON'T EVEN LIKE PEACHES. And yet there I was, happily eating peach pie and reconsidering some of my life choices. It was delicious. The fudge pecan received rave reviews from the family members who tried it. I didn't get a bite of that one, so I'm not going to sit here and pretend otherwise, but I was very enthusiastically assured that it was fantastic. The buttermilk was the only one that didn't really land for us, but I want to be fair about why. My family and I grew up eating a very traditional, custardy buttermilk pie. Bevers' version seemed to be a cream-cheese based, and simply wasn't the style any of us expected. It wasn't BAD. It just wasn't our buttermilk pie. If you prefer that richer, creamier style, you may absolutely love it. But here's what ALL four slices had in common: THAT CRUST. Made from scratch, flaky, tender, buttery and exactly what pie crust is supposed to be. You can tell somebody back there understands that the crust isn't merely transportation for the filling. It matters. We'll absolutely stop again when we're anywhere near Chappell Hill, and next time I may actually try the food everyone keeps talking about. But let's not kid ourselves. I'm coming back for that cherry pie.
