Hello. My name is Heather F. and I am a karaoke-aholic. I'm a singer, man. It's in my blood and this is one of my favorite places to do it in. By no means is Bush Garden a shining example of what the perfect Karaoke joint should look like (I can't tell you what the perfect place is yet, I haven't been there) but I've never had less that a good ol' fashioned tipsy time, every time. I always get the same, friendly cocktail waitress (if I hadn't killed so many brain cells, I would tell you her name) and the host! Oh don't get me started on how fascinating and fantastic he is! I have also had dinner in the restaurant and it wasn't bad. The only downside is that I've been creeped out a time or two by the eerie leering regulars that camp out at the bar. What else can I say, other than this is the best karaoke bar in the entire city. Maybe even the state of Washington. I've never eaten here. Not sure I want to. After 9:30, though, the place starts hoppin' and the karaoke is awesome. Lots of regulars with great voices, and totally bizarre laser disc movies playing for each song. I don't even know where they find these things, but they are pretty awesome. Drinks and pretty cheap, and the vibe is friendly and fun. I can't recommend an evening at BG enough! read more

I don't generally consider myself a great singer. Wait, wait, before you go and decide you're never going to come out and hear my band play because you can listen to the sweet sounds of dogs braying during the next full moon... I can sing backups just fine, and that's my job in Stay Tuned. Besides banging out the bass, jumping around, and cracking bad jokes, that is. We practice twice a week, and lately I've been sitting around at home writing and recording music, including singing lead vocals. But I don't consider myself a great singer. A great singer is someone who can jump up and hit perfect pitch, start singing a song before the music has started and the band comes in and holy crap they're in key. How the F#$& did they do that? Me dunno. So, regardless of the fact that I have gotten out on stage in front of two thousand people at shows and festivals and rocked their socks off (and my own), getting up and singing karaoke to songs I don't EVER practice or sing along to (and in some cases don't even know) is of concern to me. I am worried about you, dear listener, and your hearing. However... I discovered that I can really rock the hell out of Black Crowes "Hard to Handle." Not bad at Thin Lizzy's "Boys are Back" either, though I do sing along to that one at home. Bush Garden's pours a stiff drink. I believe our bartender's name was Gloria. She kept them coming. She kept them stiff. I had to spend some time drinking water and walking around to make sure I could drive. The Karaoke host was awesome. Recently I came here and witnessed a homeless man enter the bar, sign up for a karaoke song, wait patiently without ordering anything, sing his song, and leave honorably. It made my heart grow three sizes. I ate a meal here but I don't want to talk about it. read more

I'm not the type to search out obscure bars in the ID for Karaoke. But my friends are. Which is how I have ended up at Bush Garden more times than I care to admit. I've never sang here, because the place is ALWAYS packed, and if you aren't a regular, pretty hard for the KJ to give a shit about you. Whatever, I like watching my friends sing. The major problem is the price of alcohol. $5 for a Well drink. Think about that. $5 for a SINGLE, not a DOUBLE. This is a shady "restaurant" in the ID. What the hell makes them think they can get away with those prices!?!?!? I'd rather just go to Rock Box. The books are better. There is no KJ to ignore you. And they have $5 doubles until 8 pm, whereas Karaoke doesn't even start at Bush Garden till like 10 pm. Way past my bed time. There is a parking lot though, and the servers/bartenders are nice. read more

This is another place I can't believe I've not written a review for. This is hard to explain. They don't get 5 stars for food; from what I've had its pretty mediocre albeit affordable. They don't even get 5 stars for drinks, despite being cheap as butt and strong as an ox jacked up on meth. This place gets 5 stars for environment. Everyone here is unbelievably friendly be they staff or clientele. The waitresses are freaking adorable. The karaoke is to die for; everyone roots for everyone and it's a crazy party atmosphere. Also, I once spent 4 hours here POUNDING doubles like it was almost judgement day and walked out only 40$ broker. NOT. BAD. Bush Garden will always hold a special place in my heart as the location of my Karaoke debut. I've been a Karaoke fan for years, but have never been able to pull myself out of my chair and up to the stage. I was a little worried about this place at first, to be honest. The lights were on bright, the lone waitress seemed scared to ask to kitchen staff to make us food (during a food-only happy hour no less!), and when the food finally arrived, it was sub-par at best. But as the drinks (strong and cheap!) started kicking in, the lights dimmed, and the special charm of the waitstaff started to flow, my heart warmed up to this odd little place. Prior to having my Karaoke slip pulled, I decided to make my next drink a double. "Good idea," said the bartender. "Less trips to the bar, that way." You can't beat that logic. read more

To be honest, I don't find that the food here is above standard. There is however, variety here. You can come for HH (which btw-there are NO drink specials, just 2 for 1 appetizers), there is karaoke, a bar with ample seating and two areas for dining. One area has a sushi bar type layout. Very enticing but haven't tried their sushi yet. The other seating area for dining is the type where you look like your sitting on the floor. Ooooh, very nostalgic. Yay. It's worth missing but a good place to group up if you are close by and need a starting point. They also have a parking lot which is nice b/c the ID has some pretty limited street parking. read more

Came here the other night to prefunk before Opening game day for the Mariners. Staffing was pretty scarce and they are kind of pushy but I still enjoy coming here for drinks because they pour heavy and it is cheap. $8 dollars for basically a double shot of goose is awesome. My nickname isn't goosey for nothing. My friends and I always have a good time here. They also have karaoke too soo once you get enough drinks in you, you too can become the rock star you always wanted to be. read more

I didn't come here for the food so this review is for the late night karaoke that they have here... I really don't know what my "standard" is for a karaoke bar but this definitely wasn't it. it was dark, it was cramped. a dive might be a compliment to this place. there was no where to sit and barely any room to walk. the crowd was eclectic to say the least - from middle aged folks, to a few young people drinkin in the corner, a large just over middle aged bachorlette parties... people dressed up, people dressed down. I suppose the common denominator was that they were all drunk and having fun. Is it a good thing? a bad thing? that's for you to decide but this scene definitely wasn't my cup of tea. i'll have to come back in the day time for the food though because i've heard good things! read more

To be fair, I'm only reviewing Bush Gardens for the Saturday night Karaoke. I don't think I'd even try this place for food because there are so many other favorites in the ID that I'd rather visit. Karaoke, on the otherhand, was VERY entertaining. I've been to karaoke in the U-Dist, Belltown, Ozzies... does not compare to the cramped, retro feel of Bush Gardens. Sure there was standing room only for about a hr, I accidentally broke a glass bc I had no where to stand and my wide hips knocked it off a table... drinks everywhere, tables sticky, etc., etc. The karaoke talent, experience, and amazing videography on some of the videos displayed on various TV monitors around the rectangular bar - priceless. Such a good vibe for karaoke, all fun and no pretentious guys/girls trying to impress the rest of the bar. Just good ole' karaoke entertainment. That said - if you want a table, come early. There aren't enough brown vinyl swivel chairs for everyone. :) read more

Bush Garden is run down, dirty and serves mediocre food (like just about every other restaurant I've visited in the International District, sadly). I'm a guy that gets right to the point. Here's the back story: On a sunny Monday evening, the craving for beef sukiyaki hit my wife and I. One half hour and a little Yelp research later, we found ourselves seated at Bush Garden. We came for dinner, not late night karaoke like many others. First impression - old and dirty. The decor, the carpet, everything. It smelled strongly of an aging restaurant (you know the smell). We probably should have left right then. (Speaking of smell: I stripped off my clothes the moment we got home; they reeked of old restaurant.) We were seated (sort of) and began poring over the menus. We each chose the Beef Sukiyaki special (pretty screaming deal for $7), some rice, and a plate of sushi to share. It was a ton of food. All in all, none of it was memorable. The sukiyaki was sweet, the beef tender, and the broth light; overall it was quite good, but I wouldn't return for it. The spicy scallop had SO MUCH spicy mayo, it was overwhelming (and overwhelmingly spicy). Some other roll we had was so forgettable, it has already escaped me. The server was actually a bit of a fun gal, but the service in general was slow and inattentive (like most Asian restaurants I've visited - sorry if this comes across as borderline racist, but my experience is my experience). If you absolutely must go to Bush Garden, at least get the Beef Sukiyaki. It was easily the best part of the experience. read more

I'm told it used to be better than a nightclub. Cool tatami mats and a couple of nice waitresses mixed in with the scowlers. Food is reasonable. But as for the environment - listening to loud, bad karaoke and supportive cat calls while we were trying to enjoy a solemn post-funeral ethnic dinner... not such a good place to go. Horrible Horrible.. and the worse Japanese food in my life!!! o my god... the rating right here is over rated!!! this restaurant is dirty, dusty .. and lack of management. I think the only thing that keep this restaurant going is the karaoke. it took 30 minutes to start serving our miso soup.and the other 40 minutes for the meal. unbelievable :( miso soup was room temperature when they serve it. my bento box was sticky and oily on the surface. my saba shioyaki was dry and over cooked. my crab cake was super salty. my unagi tasted old and yuckkk, i bet its been 7 months in the freezer. my nabayaki udon has no taste, it's blend.. my maguro sashimi was thin and old (not fresh) i would rather to eat a low rated sushi from wajimaya. this was my nightmare in Japaneses restaurant. i thought i trust these ppl who gives 5 stars for this restaurant. but then again i was wrong. sayonara bushgarden... !!! eewww YABAII...:( read more

Bush Garden used to be a Karaoke staple of mine. The book was small, but eclectic and included unusual gems like Snoopy vs. the Red Baron and a whole lot of songs in Spanish or Japanese. Furthermore, when Kenny hosted, you were sure to be entertained. Unfortunately, as the place grew more popular and as Kenny began to pass off his hosting duties to his less charismatic cousin, Bush Garden lost some of its appeal. Still, it is an excellent place to sing and have sushi on a less crowded night and the wait staff is always friendly. read more

Luckily Bush Garden is older than me so I can say I've been going there all my life and leave it at that. I've only eaten in the tatami rooms which was always our special place for celebrations. My father would speak Japanese to the kimono clad waitress, and we figured he was saying "just look at my worthless daughters," but she would smile at us anyway and cook perfect sukiyaki at our table. Where else can you eat in your own private room and drink sake at exactly the right temperature and sit on the floor? The tempura is just right - it should never be oily and the sushi melts in your mouth, the way it should. So I went back for to try the shabu shabu before my assignment ended. As I said before, the minumum two orders for the shabu shabu, sukiyaki, or shabu/sukiyaki mix. The waitresses were a little surprised that I was ordering two orders by myself, but I told them I would take home any unfinished protions. Everything came out rather quickly since the restaurant was a little slow that night. A portable propane stove with a large pot of konbu and cracked pepper seasoned water came out first. This was followed by bowls of sunomono and miso soiup. The waitress was kind enough to to give me one of each instead of two bowls of sunomono. A large plate of veggies, udon, and glass noodles, and finally two plates of thinly slice wagyu beef. The veggies consisted mostly of napa cabbage, onions, and bean sprouts. Two pieces of carrots, two pieces of bamboo shoots, straw and button mushrooms rounded out the rest. The beef seemed fresh, like it was never frozen, and well trimmed, there was very little visible fat. The was obviously well marbled though, when cooked it was extremely tender and flavorful. Three sauces were offered for dipping: a ponzu (a little too sour), a watery sesame (sweet and good), and hoisin sauce. No additional condiments such as grated daikon, chopped green onions, or garlic were offered. I am not sure they have any available, I guess I should have asked. The amount of meat you get with one order is a bit on the skimpy side and ordering two orders is a little overwhelming on the veggies. I wish they had the option to order extra meat. Overall, I was very surprised and satisfied with the shabu shabu here. I look forward to trying the sukiyaki. I had the Kaiseki Bento Box, which includes sashimi, sushi, tempura, salmon (shioyaki, teriyaki or kogane), and chicken teriyaki. The nigiri and sashimi was fine. The chicken was overkill for a bento box. Too much food. I mostly wished I had ordered a different meal. The restaurant itself seemed old and dirty, but not in a quaint way. It is a really nice big space, just needs to be spruced up a bit. The restaurant does not live up to Seattle standards for Japanese restaurants. read more

Ah, Bush Garden. A little piece of Japan right here in Seattle, except that the food wasn't nearly as good and the restaurant not nearly as clean as the real thing. My kobe beef sukiyaki wasn't bad, per se, and it did have the signature slightly sweet flavor, but it wasn't very tender and the dish overall lacked oomph. The tatami mat experience is fun, and the service was good, but the restaurant is shoddy and not an overly appealing place to eat. read more

I've never had Japanese food in Japan so I'm not able to say what was wrong in the food I ordered, but I've had Japanese food in other good restaurants in Seattle, to say that this food was not as delicious as in the other places. Actually especially the sushi wasn't good at all! For sure the fish had the wrong color and texture, and moreover a bad taste, a lot 'fishy'. I want to say that the service was really accurate and nice, and I really loved my first experience in a tatami room, even if there was a hole under the table... do they cheat also in Japan? read more

This is one of my favorite sushi restaurants, but I will admit, it may be more for the admosphere than the sushi. Kinda divey, hole in the wall with no windows whatsoever and a "tiki" themed bar that hasn't been remodelled since the 70's. On a karaoke night you may quite possibly be treated to the worst of the worst (apparently one guy who sings there regularly is distinctly remembered by anyone who has ever been there!). Luckily it is full on entertainment...if you sit outside of the bar where it is still pretty quiet. My first and last time at this place! My phone was stolen last Saturday during the Holiday season. Apparently the karaoke host said theft happens a lot there, so keep your items close and be alert at all times! (Side note: I assume its the Karaoke host that stole it because at one point he was wearing my jacket) If anyone else experiences theft here, I highly suggest you report to the police. I already reported my stolen phone to SPD and the more theft reports tied to this place, the higher the chances this place and the staff can get searched. Okay we were craving shabu-shabu, why Seattle doesn't have more shabu places I don't understand. By divine guidance of the GPS device we ended up at Bush Garden the restaurant, not amusement park. lol Older building that's being renovated and when you walk in you see the bar which isn't so inviting, on the left side the main dining area with the sushi bar, and on the right of the bar are the tatami rooms for a more Japanese experience. Here's the deal, they have Kobe beef shabu-shabu! Need I say more! Great find, great food, we definitely will be back for some sushi, sashimi and more shabu-shabu! Our waitress was so helpful and very knowledgeable, learned that this place was the eminent Japanese Cultural Center back in its hay day almost 60 years ago, awesome!!! =) read more

Going to Bush Garden for karaoke is quite the experience. An experience everyone should have the pleasure of experiencing at least once in their life. I mean where else can you go but to a Japanese karaoke bar in Seattle and have someone sing a song in Spanish, no where else I'm sure. Though if you do want to sing you either need to know the secret hand shake or slip the karaoke DJ some money while giving him your song request. Even if you do that you may not know it's your turn because the sound is pretty bad but hey what do you expect. They have a late night happy hour, where select appetizers are buy one get one free and they taste like it, not bad for buy one get one free. If you're there a while and start to get tired check out the ladies room there's a green love seat you can take a nap on. read more

Very good sukiyaki. The regular Japanese food is OK, but the sukiyaki is excellent. Unlike most American variants where is comes precooked in a little pan, this comes raw on a plate and each person can cook it themselves as is the fashion in most Japanese izakayas. Home away from home! Great food until 10pm, and karaoke everyday starting at 9:30pm! It may be a little intimidating at first when you walk in, but everyone treats you like family as long as you're respectful. No other place in Seattle that's like the Bush Garden, it's where generations and people from all walks of life collide. It's the perfect community. read more

The more I go to Bush Gardens, the more I adore it. I have been going there every Sunday for quite a while now, and I've recently decided that I can pretty much go there any day of the week and have a good time. Bush Gardens is like a trip in time back to a past that never really existed, but by God you wish it did. It's had the same decor since at least the late 70's. Seeing the same crowd there every time I go is awesome, even if I never go talk to them. Susie, the bartender/waitress on Sunday nights is my absolute favorite but one. I can't say enough good things about BG. I have a huge catalogue of supurlatives, all of which fail at adequately explaining just how excited I get about going to Bush on a Sunday evening. Came by one night after work for some food and sake. It's cool, casual and chill. The karaage and gyoza were good. The sake was interesting when it came in a glass within a shallow box which was also filled with sake. I've never had food here but when I lived in Seattle I had a standing obligation to go to karaoke on Thursday nights. Allen has hosted some of the best karaoke nights I've seen anywhere. More importantly, you never EVER know what the night is gonna bring. I once saw a silver fox in a biker jacket blow through Chris Isaak's "Wicked Games" and then kill at "Gangsta's Paradise" by Coolio. I've seen 80 year old Asian men scat through a Michael Buble song. I've seen the bartender start a dance party by singing Robyn. Also the drinks are cheap and strong. read more

I've never eaten here, but I've been to the bar a handful of times for the karaoke. Which is awesome. There's a two for one appetizer happy hour sometimes, we hit it last on a Sunday afternoon. I guess the karaoke guy didn't show so the bartender struggled with running back and forth between the bar and trying to figure out the karaoke machine, but she was a sweetheart and treated us great. There are usually some karaoke regulars hanging around here somewhere. Decent drinks and pretty typical hole in the wall dive otherwise. There isn't much to eat vegetarian in the bar without the full menu. Mostly the edamame. It's something I suppose. read more

This place is still the best karaoke spot in Seattle. Unpretentious, strong drinks, amazing staff and a talented and fair karaoke host. I came here with about 10 or so friends and when we got there at 9 the place was already jam packed with no available tables. Disappointed, I asked who I believe was the manager/owner (Karen) if there was any other place we could sit. She actually asked a guy sitting at a table if he would be able to move to the bar so my group could sit down. She is an incredibly nice lady and does everything she can to make her customers happy. The karaoke is well organized there and even though the place was standing room only myself and the rest of my group each got a few times to sing. If you decided you weren't brave enough to do that solo and wanted to turn into a duet it was no issue at all (and this has been an issue at other karaoke places in the past). Plus the stage set up is great with an awesome projector screen that shows awesomely bad early 90's karaoke videos with lyrics. My father used to take us to Bush Garden when I was a young boy. I remember really loving that place. Recently, my wife and I were in the ID and she wanted Japanese food. We decided to try Bush Garden. We had a traditional Japanese dinner. We thought it was a great meal for the price. It was artfully arranged and served. We also enjoyed a bottle of warmed Sake. With the explosion of sushi bars around Seattle, it was nice to find a place where one can get traditional Japanese meals also, as we get tired of just sushi. I'm totally with Michelle and other-Lindsey. Bush Garden is not about food, it's about karaoke. The decor is like a bad lounge in old Vegas, aka AWESOME. It's a tradition for our group of friends to get Mai Tais at BG, and they are so strong....but that's the courage you need to get up and sing so that works well. Kenny, the host, is a show in and of himself. He is a tad crazy and I think he just picks the songs he wants to hear and calls those people. There is no method to the madness when he's calling names. The videos with the songs are so 80s it's hilarious. You can't go too often, it's just too much. Our group tries to go every month or two. Get there early, the place fills up fast at karaoke time. The only problem is you have to wait for all the dumb dinner people to leave and free up the tables. It's kind of a dumb set-up...they should ix-nay the restaurant and make it all karaoke! read more

It was my first time at Bush (ever) on Aug 15th and I was excited because of the word-of-mouth ravings from friends! We were only there for karaoke and the Kj that was working (obnoxious, maybe intoxicated, darkish Asian dude) ruined it for me. He made some offensive comments on-stage into the mic with regards to dyslexia (claiming my friend wrote his song number down wrong), forced me to tip when I put my song choice in (never had to do that before in any other karaoke place in Seattle or the world), he yelled at someone when one of our friends asked if the mic was on and he was like "IT'S ON! IT'S ON!" While hitting the mic!, we didn't even get to sing because our songs were too far down the list. I'd come back, because I liked the umbeyoncè but not if that douchebag is working. I want to love this place, but aside from cheap $3 gut-rot food, it's just a disappointment almost every time. Friday nights used to be fun for karaoke, but it's routinely been disappointing and just downright offensive. High(low)lights: Awful table service. The woman who (I assume) was employed to work on tables is unreliable and never shows up. She literally has spent 15 minutes chatting up singles at the bar (away from the tables) and fussing around on her phone. When she does decide to grace you with her unpleasantness, she makes it quite clear how much of imposition it was for her to pay attention to you. The karaoke DJ on Fridays is offensive and just crude in general. He's Filipino? Vietnamese? Chinese? Korean? Doesn't matter, he'll just take it upon himself to pepper the night with a spat of accents to berate white guests or demean anyone else in attendance of Asian descent. Also, he literally farts on stage. While you're singing. Star for cheap, basic drinks. Star for non-Friday night (read: WORK night) service. MINUS stars for disappointing and insulting service on the busiest night of the week. Honestly, I really want to love this place. read more

Wow, wow and double wow! I've walked and driven past Bush Garden often and written it off as a relic of a bygone era. But I was driving around the ID when I was suddenly overcome by a powerful craving for raw fish. What the heck, I thought. Let me give this Bush Garden place a try. At least I should be able to knock back a nice bottle sake there. The sushi was fabulous. Generously thick slabs of exquisitely fresh and flavorful fish resting atop a mouthful of rice with just the right soupcon of a vinegary bite. I ~could~ describe this restaurant in two words: SHAMEFUL TRASH, But instead I'd like to shine a light on my experience at this..."establishment" to hopefully prevent further passerby from wandering inside. I journeyed into the restaurant with three other people to catch Thursday night Karaoke for a friends' birthday party. The building had a sign on the opposite side of the street which confused me, and upon entry into the gloomy hallway (littered with gaudy decorations) a familiar scent of moldy socks wafted into the air. The inside was barely lit, and there was only one measly table seated in the dining area. Next to them a puddle of water or oil lay uncleaned. I also visited the bathroom during my stay. I walked in, and had to hover! We walked into the bar, after being LITERALLY barked out of the dining area by the waitress (we WERE going to buy some entrees before the party, but got shooed out of the dining area! Twice!) In the bar, the tables that unevenly dotted the dingy floor resembled something you'd see in a cheap bowling alley. The young DJ sang Lady Gaga at the top of his lungs while hitting on the unsuspecting boys in the audience. Old plates of food and cups with melted ice were a staple on every table. Nothing had been cleaned all day. Dust EVERYWHERE. But let's get to the real reason this place is a steaming heap, shall we? The blonde coked-out (I'm not talking about the soda...) bartender. Seems harsh? Maybe if it was just me who noticed. The entire bar was snickering about her blundering way. No one knew if she'd pulled out the flask during her break in between hits of meth, or had cocaine in the salt jar. Whatever she was on, no one wanted any. She stumbled over to us, and a few people order drinks, she had to think REAL hard to write it down. She walked back to the bar, COUGHED on her hand and then grabbed the clean (?) glass to pour drinks. My girlfriend and I decided not to order anything, and even after we had told her repeatedly that we were going to order food after the party; she kept asking how we were and if we wanted a drink. (..AND not in the friendly way...in the I don't recognize a person I just talked to way.) Two friends of mine went to the bar to order some wells. One of my friends...watching her mix them notices she hasn't added but a cap full of vodka in the glass, and asks her to make another (they were over priced as it is!). She looks him dead in the eyes and says "How do you know there isn't alcohol in it?" He replied that he'd watched her pour it. The owner's wife who is also bar-tending starts to tell my friend that she did not make it, because the druggie starts making a scene (on the job). No one will own up to the drink, or apologize, or just remake it. Then the coke addict also replies that she doesn't even know who MADE the drink to the owner and to my friend repeatedly. She was just so confused. Everyone in line raised an eyebrow, for they had all seen her make it. Later in the night she came up to my girlfriend and I...yet again. This time to ask if we had bought *everyone* a round of shots. She wasn't joking. We were both rather confused, and kept trying to tell her we hadn't ordered anything at all (we were going to get food, but they said they had nothing truly vegetarian), but she asked another three times as if we were lying about it. I wish I could give this sorry hole zero stars. I shudder to think poor souls will stumble into there thinking it is worthy of their money. So do yourselves a favor, stay away! read more
