Wow! This place is classy. Uncle Bob kind of classy. If you were a regular at the old Bush Garden location, you most certainly are, should, would be a regular at the new location. Karen, the owner, has done an incredible job of reopening Bush and we are incredibly lucky to have Bush back in the hood. Everything is updated and has sentimental meaning everywhere. Gone are the days of the physical binder of songs, writing down your name, song, the song code, and the box TVs! Flatscreen TVs, restored intricate designs of the old Bush Garden, and a refresh of the song catalogue (digital and has an app) make for a sorely missed gathering spot is back to sing out whatever feelings you need to sing out. The food is pretty much the same like the Sukiyaki. Reminds me of the old days. But those are special memories. It's time to make new ones! Their slowest times are from 4-7 pm. Do yourself a favor and stop by during the timeframe and chill. But if you wanna belt out a few notes, stop in at 9:30 pm. Anyway, it's worth it any time. read more

Ignore all reviews prior to June 2026 - the new Bush Garden has a new fabulous menu but also does not have some of the items pictured in the older postings (no shabu shabu or sushi for example). But the new menu is totally awesome and worth a visit. The service is fast and friendly and the soundtrack speaks to my heart and takes me back to my favorite memories. Can't say enough great things about bush garden!! We had a huge party and reservation of 15 for a dinner event on a Friday night and the restaurant was super accommodating. The staff was amazing at keeping track of everything, bringing everything out, and incredibly friendly. They let us know ahead when the kitchen would be closing and if there's anything else we'd need. I got their Oyako Donburi and POG Refresher - both are great! Would also recommend their Karage as an appetizer and Mochi ice cream for dessert. Once the kitchen closes and karaoke starts, the place is also so fun! I'm so excited that Bush Garden has reopened! This place brings back so many great memories, and I can't wait to make new ones here. I stopped by to watch one of the soccer games, and it was such a fun experience. The space is thoughtfully designed it's a little cozy, but that just adds to the welcoming atmosphere and great ambiance. Even though they were busy, the service was excellent. Everyone was friendly, attentive, and made us feel right at home. I also tried one of their non-alcoholic drinks, and it was absolutely delicious! The new Bush Garden is, uh, bush league. It's a far cry from the original one until the new owner bought it. I wouldn't call it a Japanese restaurant, but a glorified karaoke bar, catering to privileged gen-Zers and hipsters. I loved Uncle Bob, who did so much so minority community in Seattle, but he didn't make Bush Garden the restaurant it was in its hey days, it was the Seko family, Roy in particular. But nothing in that place to honor him. The "new" Bush Garden should have been in Belltown or on Capitol Hill. read more

After talking to friends and co-workers about places to sing and drink, Bush Gardens (BG) came up a few times. I called BG and found they have Karaoke on Fri, Sat, Sun, and Tues nights(?) I dropped by 9:00 PM on a Saturday night and was surprised that a group of folks were already there in the bar area half drunk waiting for a big night of karaoke. As 9:45 rolled around, we ordered a few appetizers and a beer each as the host passed out song books and request slips. It appears that the songs are old favorites from the 80s and 90s (Journey, Heart, etc) as well as "blast from the past" songs well before that. If you are looking for modern songs of today (e.g. Adele and Far East Movement), you are out of luck. I was able to put in for a few songs and got in a couple before midnight. I was amazed that the host still used the ancient HUGE laser discs I remember back in the late 90s. Looks as though he had both LDs as well as the modern stuff so there was no delay in moving the singers along. The appetizers was not so amazing so if I were to order again, just give me the gyoza (pan fried dumplings) as they were the best of out of the bunch. The beers were priced only at about $3-4 bucks each and is definitely a great deal. I also read that they have 2 for 1 appetizers: Monday through Saturday 5-6:30 pm and 8:45 - 9:45 pm. The furniture and bar lounge setup should be revisited and renovated as they are quite old and carry an "old grandma's house" smell to it. I quickly forgot about that as I settled in. Parking is provided across the street with plenty of lighting and it felt safe. I was a bit worried reading the reviews about possibly getting shot and other crazy stories. As with any place, get out early before all the drunks get on the street! Overall I had a fun time and glad to have left right around midnight as the crowd started to build and get rowdy. Tried the food here finally! We were seated in one of the tatami rooms which was a nice experience. This place reminds of japanese restaurants circa 1960. Solid old school Japanese fare. I went with the combo box with tuna sashimi and grilled mackrel. Nice char on the mackrel and the tuna looked fresh. I, being the gluttonous eater that I am also split the Shabu shabu to top off the tank. Prices were reasonable for a Japanese place. About $11.95 for the combo and $15 for the shabu shabu. Afterwards, had to hit the Karaoke bar which is always a blast. The old school laser disk format cracks me up and brings me back to the day when that was cutting edge! Our yelping crew pretty much took over the place for the first few hours making it almost another unofficial yelp event. The little chunk of salmon was the size of my index and middle finger, which for $7.75, is about what you'd expect. The tempura was OK but the batter seemed a little doughy. I've come here now a few times for happy hour and karaoke night on the weekend. Overall, it's a pretty divey Japanese restaurant bar, but it's really fun. Service can be hit or miss, but just be patient! The deals are super. If you catch their dinner specials, appetizers and their special beers (Asahi, Sapporo, etc.) are only $3 each. We ordered a bunch of apps to share like the black cod kasuzuke, saba, chicken karaage, fried calamari, Japanese style ribs, tempura, etc. We ordered a lot! The sizes were great and we got to try everything so that was awesome. One of the very few places in the ID with parking so it's convenient. I haven't tried their sushi, and probably won't, but will maybe come back to try their sukiyaki and shabu shabu when it gets cooler. read more

My last visit of Bush Garden was a few years ago and it was very pleasant. However, my lunch at this place last week turned out to be terrible. The price was quite cheap, but the quality was poor. The unagi don costs $7.75. Sounds a great price? Prepare to see the smallest eel piece in any unagi don you've ever ordered. The price is not that good anymore when you see those tiny fish pieces. Most Japanese restaurants put tempura on the side for udon. It's OK to put the tempura in the udon broth, as long as it's still crispy. But in this restaurant, it's very soggy, and fails apart when pick it up from the soup. A big no no. And the broth is way too salty. Sukiyaki was not very good either. The flavor is way off, and they replaced the clear noodle with lots of bean sprouts, which is too soft and soggy in the broth. Another disappointment. Not sure what has happened to the restaurant in the last few years, but the food quality is definitely dropped to a poor level. If its food keeps on tasting like this, I won't visit them again. read more

That stupid street always throws me for a loop when I'm in the ID. The best thing about Maynard? Bush Gardens, hands down. Then it dawns on you that ANY song can turn into a duet thanks to the miracle of modern karaoke technology. And you sing along with every song except the one you put in to sing. This place isn't for a girls night out or at least, not a "girly" night out where you're decked in a pretty dress and heels. Dimmed lighting, 60's-80's styled furnishing, and a small stage for karaoke in the corner. Feels more like a place to relax and drink after a long week, while you watch folks sing live karaoke after one too many drinks. So, I don't think this place have a drink menu since my friends and I didn't get one when we were there. The waitress told us they have the "basics". Not being a big drinker, I don't know what the "basic" drinks were so I just picked a beer that the waitress listed. Which was Sierra Nevada, which I never had before, and only because I read about the beer in a magazine earlier that day that I picked it. My friends didn't like beers so not knowing the "basics" either, they googled it and went with a cosmos. The beer was ok and the cosmos...a whole lot of alcohol. Not very fruity. This place is for folks who often drink and not for us "newbies". Instead of feeling like I am in my 20's, I felt like a 16 year old that snuck in with a fake ID who had no idea about drinking. Overall, I still had a good time. It was a learning experience. PS. the bathroom is creepy. If Bob Hope and Bing Crosby had ever made "The Road To Seattle" this would be the divey joint where they'd meet Dorothy Lamour. With it's strange Souths Seas decor, it's long since drained pond and dark dark bar I always expect to see sailors and longshoremen cooking up schemes and selling antiques on the black market. Back in the day this was probably a pretty glamorous night out for a family. But now it has a tired, worn look. The elderly staff does their best to keep up but it can often be an ordeal to get your drink order in or to make sure that all of your food comes at the same time. On the other hand the food is not too shabby. They have one of the best Shabu Shabu's around. I especially like the version that has broth and Sukiyaki divided in the same bowl. They use Wagyu beef which is like an American version of Kobe and it's pretty tasty. The sushi isn't great but it's also far from the worst in town. For some reason though, on a cold winter night I can't think of a more comforting place to come have a steaming bowl of Sukiyaki and raise a toast to the long gone days of old Seattle. read more

Yeah, their food's pretty gross, and the place is a little dirty. Okay, a lot dirty. But it is karaoke mecca, and that's why we go there. Don't eat anything raw and you'll be fine. For my money, I'm not sure it gets any better than Lindsey S. doing "Jolene". Her inspiring performances, along with a healthy dose of Bush Garden Mai Tais (holy hell they are strong), usually prompt me to talk someone into being the Elton John to my Kiki Dee for a little "Don't Go Breakin' My Heart." Some karoake places seem to have attitude, like Ozzie's, but you will find none of this at Bush Garden. We sometimes wear silly costumes (Reno 911 party anyone?) and always sing random songs badly and it's all fine and practically normal at this joint. This place is a perfect storm for causing people to do stupid things, so I don't feel too bad about my performance of Bob Dylan's "Knockin' On Heaven's Door," which Kenny (the host) pulled the plug on less than halfway through. This is another place that has been around forever that I had never, ever been in. I'm not sure why, just that our paths never crossed. Here with a big pack of people for dinner, we were crammed in a corner and I ended up at the end of the table. I shared an order of shabu shabu with another person. A place of cabbage, bok choy, mushrooms, enoki, onions, noodles and bean sprouts (really, how the hell do you get the bean sprouts out to eat?) accompanied a plate of meat. Oh yeah, and there were a few lone slices of carrots and bamboo shoots. Our little pot was too small to really cook that much, but I'm a trooper. I put on my snorkle and fished everything I could out of the broth. Quite the adventure and all in all, not bad. This place is shady, secluded, sketchy and all sorts of awesome. I am not getting to Seattle anytime soon again but this place is top of the list to come back. My husband and I came by after the Seahawks game. It was rainy and in general very yucky. I saw it had good Yelp reviews and figured, we could buy some time drinking before our flight that night. We became friendly with the bartender, Suzy. She was so cool. We had eaten before coming in but wished we had an appetite. Prices were good and everyone eating around us told us the food was good. We were also there to see the Seahawks play the Jets (hubby is Seahawks, Jets is me). We were still wearing our colors, and we talked to some of the locals. They bought us a round after finding out we came just for the game. It so super cool! We didn't go to karaoke but I wish we had more time. I'd definitely partake. Totally cool. Can't wait to go back. I do prefer Asian karaoke places. Those have private rooms for group of friends to sing together. That being said there is nothing private about Bush Garden's karaoke setting. Went there for Lunch and ordered the Sukiyaki. I loved the entry way, it feels like the waiting area's in Disney when you are about to go on a ride. The Sukiyaki was plentiful and tasted very Homey. I think that I might be adding this place to my lunchtime rotation just because I liked the environment. Ya, it feels old and outdated... But I enjoyed it just the same. YOU'RE TEARING ME APAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAART! *shakes fist, pounds chest* I suppose when comes to a place like Bush Garden...the honeymoon period only lasts so long until you realize the place you thought you loved has changed and moved on without you. And really, what WERE you thinking before? This place is shabby, the food barely tolerable, the bathrooms unspeakable... oh and giant meetup groups of overly friendly furries come here often. Yikes. All that could have been forgivable for the rocking karaoke here, and rocks it still does. However, Bush Garden broke my heart on my most recent visit. When did she get high maintenance? Doubles used to cost $6 a pop, then they were $7... then $8... and now a weakly poured double will run you a solid $10. For a place with crappy decor and bad food, with a karaoke run topping out on ~maybe~ 3 songs per night, well. I'm done with Bush. read more

Dropped by here Thursday evening for a little after-work Happy Hour with Delilah. She wrangled up her co-workers into getting their drink on here, and I'm glad I got to tag along. We sat in the bar area, which couldn't accommodate a big crowd very well, but we managed to squeeze in (and pretty much overtake) one side well enough to keep everyone together. I imagine a busy night has the same level of 'sardine can' effect as a night at the Crescent, in much smaller overall space. Being hopped up on cold meds from the Plague my children gave to me meant I didn't drink, but to ensure a fair review, I sipped a bit of Delilah's rum and coke. It's a good thing there were not candles on the table, we may have burst into flames. STRONG drinks. With the large group, the appetizers were pretty much entirely represented on the table. Nothing spectacular and most requiring you to have a few of those strong drinks under your belt to be able to slur out the words, "wow this is awesome food". Service was slow given we were practically the only people in the place, often times getting the bartender lady's attention took more effort than I really cared to muster, but she was nice, chatty, kept track of all the separate tabs, and oddly enough--turned out to be related to a party in the group. I haven't experienced karaoke here.....yet...but from what I know from friends who have, and reading the reviews here... I can't wait to. Sounds like craptastic good times. read more

Everyone will tell you it's the best Karaoke in town... but what they won't tell you is why. Let me preface this review with the simple fact that I think Karaoke is for people that are delusional. It's silly, and painful and strange. I've never been comfortable in Karaoke bars, but that's not to say I haven't done it. I did it once. I was in Australia hours away from emergency services in the middle of a rain forest... and I won first place. Apparently the trick to winning is to be so incredibly intoxicated that you can't read the words to John Lennon's Imagine. Make up all of the lyrics using the names of the people present... if you can, tell little sorted stories about their sexual habits. Then when your accepting your award... simply... elegantly... and quite accidentally, back into the swimming pool. Winner! And still champeeeen! So as to why, Bush Garden is so special? One word... INCLUSION. Everyone comes here. Old, young, black, white, all of the browns, hip, and square. They all get up... they all have their moment in the sun, and for a moment they're famous. Proving... sometimes, delusions can be as sweet as an unexpected dip in a swimming pool. read more

I did not eat any food here - I merely had some drinks and participated in karaoke. If you want to know about their food, this review is not for you. The bar is filled with very interesting people. The karaoke singers were impressively good, save our group of yelpers who did an awful job to some Backstreet Boys. CP was amazing. I get the feeling he's a regular and you should watch out for him since he does a great job singing! There were a few creepsters here and I thank goodness that the other yelpers with me were fabulous and we operated as a team to defend against the scary ones. The server working was great and did a great job of keeping tabs separate and knowing who had ordered what. The bartender made good drinks. And best of all, they're not likely to cut you off here. This review is based upon my experience with the karaoke only. None of it is based on the food, waitstaff, etc. But my experience with the karaoke was so horrible, I never will return. Basically, Don't go do karaoke here on a Saturday night if you expect to sing, or are a new face. Oh wait, expect to sing, but tip the DJ upfront if you expect to sing. So I landed here last night with a friend who raved about it. I adore karaoke, and have had the pleasure of doing it in some seriously cool places here in Seattle (The Rickshaw, The Rock Box, Red Onion Tavern). I have no problem waiting through the rotation, as most of the fun with karaoke is clapping and singing and cheering for others as they belt out their tunes. There was a small crowd when we got there and the girl next to us who was "holding" sections of the seating area for her friends (she was obviously a regular) was gracious enough to allow myself and my date to take two of the seats. We chose some songs and sat back to drink, be merry and enjoy the energy of the crowd. As the night wore on (probably about two and a half hours into our stay), I noticed that the same people were singing over and over again, some as many as four times. My date told me to just "relax" it was no big deal. I did. But with karaoke, when I submit a song, sometimes I get all anxious and antsy and want to be a part of the action. But still, it was a fun crowd so I was content to wait. Until I noticed people would arrive and a few minutes later, they were singing their selection. They were obviously regulars and typically if it is once or twice it happens, it doesn't bother me, but it kept happening, over and over and over again. The couple next to me asked us "are you going to sing" for about the fifth time.. to which I responded, I don't think so. I think our songs got lost or something. She tells me, go ask the DJ, he probably skipped you by accident. They both chime in, you look like a fun girl, I bet your song will be fun! To which I replied, I am an extrovert.. it will be tons of fun! Then it happened, my date was called to do his song.. and he rocked it. It was awesome. The DJ chimed in and sang backup. It was fun. He excitedly came back... I know you're next! I was so excited... Three songs later, it still wasn't my turn. So he says, ya know, maybe you should just go check and see, because I'm ready to leave and this place is closing soon. The crowd had began to thin a bit and we were pretty tired, we'd been there for several hours. So I bounced up and asked the DJ with a smile on my face as I am a perpetually perky friendly girl (seriously, I am having an attitude or being rude to people gets you nowhere in this big ol' crazy world... kindness is the key!) So I say to the DJ.. "hey, I don't wanna be a bugaboo, hows the rotation looking?" He gave me a look that made me want to curl up in a ball and crawl underneath one of the tables. He then snapped at me... "well, if you want to sing, you need to tip me".. I then said.. "oh, I typically tip before I leave for the evening, when I close out my bar tab".. I then said excitedly.. "oh look, there's my song I was worried it got lost.." and pointed to my sad little piece of paper on the table. He then looks at me again and says to me as rude as rude can be.. "if you want to sing, you need to tip me"... and points at his tip jar..He then begins to angrily tell me a story about how when he sang Chasing Pavements his ex girlfriend walked out of the room. I was so confused. I told him, "well, I'm sorry that happened to you".. you have a good night. And walked away, tail between my legs. When I got back to the table a few people asked me again if I was singing. I said "no". They asked why. I said "because I didn't know I was supposed to tip the DJ before I sang, it's pretty late now and the place is closing soon, so we're jut going to leave". The woman then went on to tell me that the DJ was not the normal DJ and that he was horrible. She mentioned something about the regular DJ being his cousin. I went on to tell her the rest of the story and she actually apologized to me. She and her group of friends were regulars. She asked me to come back, I told her I'd be visiting my other spots moving forward where the DJ was more welcoming and played fair. Now, let me say this. I have ZERO problem tipping. I admire karaoke DJ's for what they do, and love how they keep the energy of the crowd buzzing. But I normally tip before I leave. And I tip well (typically $20 minimum). I don't tip just to sing.. I tip to say thank you. I guess at that place the price of admission to the stage is a tip in that guys tip jar. Otherwise be prepared to watch the same set of people sing over and over again. Totally sucked the fun out of karaoke for me.... I won't be back... I can't even remember much else about the place as that guy was so awful and rude to me. This is a very interesting place! I have to say, this is the most "white" place I've ever seen in the international district. The whole night I was there, there were about a hand full of Asian. This is very rare in a Chinese restaurant, especially in International district. Don't get me wrong! I think it's a good sign of diversity! Christmas Eve 2012, I came here with friends for karaoke. Well, I didn't eat here, I didn't drink here. and I also didn't do karaoke here! However, just being there for about 2 hours, I had a lot of fun with my friends who drank and sang. It's nice that Bush Garden actually have parking for their customers just across street. Even though, I paid for parking for the prior event, I was happy to see that! It's the first time I heard the term "KJ" (Karaoke Jockey) I thought the KJ that night did a good job facilitated and entertained customers. read more

The books are still fine, the service is still fine, the KJ is still killing tunes from Japanese songs about snow (?) to Wrecking Ball - but holy grain alcohol, Batman, these prices have skyrocketed. It's now $5 for a well (I think it used to be $3), which means that Bush Garden is officially more expensive than a certain percentage of bars on the Hill. There is something deeply, deeply wrong with that. To compound the issue, the drinks are now pretty light on the booze. This new experience did not make me cry in bed, but now I'm getting it out (what's in my head) because not loving Bush is a little peculiar. It saddens me to write a negative review because I've been going to Bush Garden for years and it used to be a jewel of the ID. The drinks are cheap and decent, the dive bar atmosphere is wonderful, and the karaoke used to be super fun. But the old KJ who was there forever sadly passed away a couple of years ago, and now they have a new guy (younger, stocky, Asian, often wears a hat) who is a total sociopath. We went to Bush Garden a few weeks ago for my friend's birthday. At first the KJ was only mildly hostile/annoying, getting on stage and trying to upstage the performers by grinding on people as they sang (even after being asked repeatedly to stop). At one point, he got in front of a woman as she sang and lifted up his shirt to show off his belly like an attention-hungry child. But the real kicker came towards the end of the night as he was walking to the bathroom. I looked at him and made eye contact and he proceeded to SHOVE ME IN THE FACE WITH HIS HAND as he walked by. Seriously. The KJ touched me, in the face, with his dirty hand. I told the bartender (older woman, very nice), and she apologized for him. Then on our way out, my friend confronted the guy and he reacted predictably, acting surprised, saying "OH NO! I'M SO SORRY!" then wandering off while my friend was still talking to go be a jerk some more. I found this experience totally baffling and won't be back until that guy is gone. read more

This place is alright, the food is mediocre but their tatami mats make up for that. I had their bento box, it came with a lot of food for $18.95. Sashimi, sushi, tempura, salmon, and chicken teriyaki. I loved the presentation, it came in a large bento box. The sashmi and sushi was decent but the salmon was overcooked and hard. Also ordered a spider roll (soft shell crab) which was edible but not the best I've had. We had a large party but our server neglected us and rarely filled our water and teapot which was pretty fail. At 9:30 they have free karaoke, the draw back though is they don't have a lot of newish songs. I didn't know half the songs people were singing, I felt young. Overall a decent place to come if you want to experience what eating at a tatami is like. read more

Been coming here for karaoke for a while and it has always been a good experience. After last night (12/26) I will definitely not be back on a Friday night until that DJ is fired. He was rude and mocked most of the singers. He broke a glass when he slammed it down because he didn't like one of the singers. He got in a fist fight and then got on the microphone and went on and on about it. There was total dead air at one point in the night for at least 5 min. This guy is horrible. Prob the worst I've ever seen! I see there are other terrible reviews about this guy. How is he still working here????????? read more

The karaoke sound could be better here, but it's a pretty awesome experience. When my pasty white ass got up there to sing Word Up straight out of the 80s, it was perfect for this place. It was ridiculous and cool at the same time, just like the staff and the atmosphere both. Quite the unique place, Bush Gardens. I even ate the famous yakisoba. I don't imagine that people come here for the food too much, but it was better than I expected in a place that has lighting this dim. People really turn out for karaoke here. Lots of them. I think you need to know a secret handshake for the japanese songs, not that I'm up for the challenge. When I said "wave your hands in the ay-ah like you don't cay-ah," all the hands went up.
