I've had some hits and misses from here. Any of the soups have been great, their veggie chili in particular is hearty and filling. Their entree salads are good too - the powerhouse has a variety of fresh veggies and your choice of protein. Black bean burger is just okay, came on a dry bun with no toppings. If there was an option for toppings, I wasn't asked. Generally friendly service and a nice selection of local/organic products to stock up on while you are there. Depending on what you order, expect to wait a little bit for takeout orders. read more

This is a very laid back eclectic spot...has the feel of Bus Boys in Washington DC, but the small town population of 30K. No stage, mic, nor audience involve though. However, for me it's the best salmon eggs Benedict outside of Chitown/Atlanta. The price is cheap, the plate is more than worth the price. They also have $4 mimosa, which beats bottomless for $15 (if your trying to save without getting a DUI LOL). And you'd still save in the end BOTTOM LINE. Yeah, Bushel's, it's the place in downtown Beloit. The food is great, the vibe is great and their hosting of local artists, entertainment and other events makes it a favorite gathering place. Many/most community events happen down town. So given Bushel's location right in the center at Grand & State and that they have the space to accommodate, it seems folks end up filtering into Bushels. So inevitably you run into familiar faces. They really cultivate community. They sponsor very popular events of their own from cooking, tastings, education and more. Their "Farm to Table" events are particularly popular. They've got a lot going on. They've successfully bridged the town/gown gap and that's great to see. The food and drink are very good. Never had anything we didn't enjoy. The fish taco are a favorite. The free WIFI helps with the working lunches. We stopped here for lunch on a Saturday and it was hopping. It's nice to see a place like this that focuses on local products and people located in a smaller town . We enjoyed a salmon eggs benedict, biscuits and gravy, and a Paleo burger. All of it was superb and tasted fresh and homemade. The vinaigrette dressing on my greens was amazing. Afterward we shopped a little and found some local beer mustard, homemade curry cauliflower soup, and a soy candle that we were excited to take home. Would definitely recommend that locals and visitors do business here and also grab something to eat to support the community. read more

Thank GOD for Bushel & Peck's. My quality of life is higher simply because Bushel & Peck's is not only in downtown Beloit but a 10 minute walk from my home and office. Only in business for less than a year, I was witness to their first week open, only a few things on the shelf to the morphing into local market with gourmet cheeses, organic what-not, grass-fed meats, to lunch counter serving tasting light fare, to meals pretty much all day (breakfast only on weekends) WITH BOOZE. This has become the community hub for my little town. I like the fact that I can usually bump into someone I know in the store or behind the counter. Okay, this is all 'stars hollow' great but let's get down to food. I have never been disappointed. Everything is made in-house and will probably be the healthiest thing you put in your mouth all day. (er, 'that's what she said'). It comes with a price but more often than not, I would rather pay it than eat some cheaper mcnuggets for lunch. HIGHLIGHTS: Soups: are wonderful and pretty much a necessity in the cold tundra of Beloit. My favorites are beef stew, lamb stew, veggie lentils. Badger Burger: a burger with CHEESE CURDS in them. and my favorite: the lamb burger with feta pesto. Originally introduced as two sliders, now a big boy. Haven't had alcohol on the premise but the wines to buy are cheap and pretty good. Wonderful events; they have hosted films for BIFF (Beloit International Film Festival), live music, and cooking classes. This place is a cross between a Starbucks, library, and a whole foods. I like all three of these things, but not together like at this place. It seemed a little pretentious. The prices are pretty high, but I suppose that is to be expected in a place that is artisan-like. The employees seemed nice, though no one bothered to greet us when we walked in. Seriously. In the middle of downtown rustbelt, still struggling against urban decay, Beloit, I have no earthly idea, but I'm ecstatic that it is. All of their offerings are local, seasonal, and artisanal. All of their veggies come from their own darn farm. I had their version of a club sandwich with some of the best bacon I've eaten in, well, probably, ever. Tomatoes and lettuce were so fresh they'd likely been picked that morning. I ordered the pickled beets as a side and they were so sweet and delicious with allspice and cinnamon notes that it could have been dessert. As I was with the wife, the boy, and the nephew, they too ate. Wife had the special o' the day which was fishcakes with their home made sauce and dang, if those things weren't savory and tasty out the wazoo. Boy had their grilled cheese made from local organic dairy producers on whole grain bread to which he gave two thumbs up. Nephew had their burger and fries and their fries were PERFECT: Thin cut, crispitty crunchetty slices of potato. They also, apparently, have a full bar and HUGE selection of local beers and sodas. You can buy all of their various pickled products as the place doubles as a grocery store. Atmosphere is very cool and hip, i.e., large old store cleared to rafters with big wooden tables and Scandinavian-modern type chairs. I supposed it could be noisy, but I dug it. Based on the reviews and the crowd, we were disappointed. Pricey and low quality. Chili had no spices, no flavor and was watery. French toast special was also cold. Their solution? Microwaved both, turning the raspberry/rubbard sauce on the French toast into runny liquid. Didn't buy anything in the store either. $9/lb for butter and $9 or $10 for a jar of pickles. $2.50 for a very small cup of tea with no refills. Disappointed and won't be back. read more

I have never had a bad experience at Bushel & Peck's! Just a quick jaunt down from the college, it's my go-to spot on a bad day when all I want is some good, clean food and a relaxing and inviting atmosphere. It's a fantastic place to grab a quick bite or settle in for a couple of hours of writing/studying/complaining to a friend. On Thursday nights, B&P's hosts trivia at 7:30. A lot of the community and college students come out and it's great for catching up with others or people watching. Suddenly, my undergrad degree has become relevant. I think they've recently hit a sweet spot of balance between the cafe and grocery areas. I love that they've started selling their handmade pickled items and hot sauces in the store. Mom gets a jar of pickled beets every time she visits. I've enjoyed everything I've eaten here - the beet salad is my go-to but I've had a number of their sandwiches and soups too. The fries are skinny and often crunchy (which is the way I like them) and perfect with the beet ketchup they've started putting on all the tables. The sautéed kale as a side is amazing as well. My only complaint is that sometimes (and not regularly) the meat in the hamburger tastes a little old - like it's been frozen for a bit too long. It's not often, but it is off-putting. B&P's really is a community hub that offers delicious organic and local food, beverages, grocery items, and a place to chill for a while. I miss it now that I've graduated and left Beloit. I was made to feel unwelcome and not wanted when I came here to eat dinner with my family. I grabbed menus from upfront at 3:50 PM on a Sunday and sat down with my kids and husband to figure out what to eat. Twenty minutes later we went up to order and were told the kitchen was closed. I spoke to the manager/owner Nd asked why no one told us the kitchen was closed. .. why they watched us sift through the menus for 20 minutes just to tell us the kitchen is closed? She responded that she felt her employees are honest good people and she has a hard time believing this. This is in no way was a proper response because for one it doesn't answer the question and two I was called a liar by default. Very disappointed read more

This place is great! Locally owned Market/Cafe/Coffee shop! They have great food, both meaty and vegan! The vegan chili is fantastic and I have it the last two times I have been in town! It's a super large space with Free Wi-Fi so it's a nice place to hang! They also have a bottomless cup of coffee for 2.50! Not to shabby! I got a chance to meet the owner and he grows all the meat, and veggies they sell there! They also do lots of spices and canned goods! They work the Farmers Markets in the area! He was super nice and asked us to stay for the weekly Trivia they do there! They also have beer and wine so hey! It's an all around goodies stop! read more

We've been here many times and used to love it, but each time we come back to eat and get little more disappointed. The last few times we've come in the food has been pretty disappointing. It's just so hit or miss. Most recently, we came for the pop up bistro. We got the short ribs, rainbow trout, and corn fritters. The corn fritters were good. The trout was okay. The ribs were inedible. They were incredibly overcooked and rubbery and no flavor. The accompanying carrots were hard. It was so crowded that we felt it was impossible to send back the food. So instead, we shared the trout and left the ribs. What a waste. I really want to love this place (and I really do for all the goods they sell around the store!!), which makes it all the more disappointing. Based on my experiences, if you are going to eat here... Things that seem to usually be good: any of the grilled cheeses, salads, burger Things I would avoid: Meats that require any special seasoning or cooking (breakfast sausage, pot roast soup, pulled pork, ribs) and pancakes mainly because I've had them three times and they were all completely different so there's no consistency read more

I've been here about three times now for various reasons. Once for a work function where there were a lot of people, and you could tell it stressed the kitchen out because it took awhile for the food to arrive. So I wouldn't use this place for large parties. However, the other times I've gone with a friend the service was quick and the food was amazing. They know how to put a unique spin on all of their dishes. You could think of the traditional sandwich or side and then when you get your plate, it has the same components, but it's served in a non traditional way. But it's so yummy! On first look it appears like a organic food market w/ a deli, but it seems that most people come here to dine rather than shop for organic/local/fair-trade foods. The cafe is roomy and can easily accommodate groups of 6-8 (they have 2-3 large tables). It's like most other deli-type establishments where you order at the counter, seat yourself, and they bring the food to you. They also bus the tables, but you can do so yourself as well. As others have mentioned, portions are reasonable, but you may need to add an extra side or a dessert if you're really hungry (like I was). The food is tasty and fresh, but it didn't really blow my socks off. I got the beef brisket, which was served on slider-type sandwiches. The fries had a great seasoning, but seemed a bit undercooked (hence the 4 star rating). Overall a good value with good food and nice atmosphere. Oh, and if you're into antiques and art, they have a various assortment for sale in the back "art gallery" on the way to the restrooms (environmentally-conscious paintings, old metal fences, piano, door knobs, sled, etc.). I didn't get a chance to shop the "grocery" portion of this place, so I can't speak to that effect, but they did have a section with beer, wine, and cheese. read more

What I really love about Bushel & Peck's is that it exists. I spent a long weekend visiting a college student and had a fair amount of downtime. I found myself at B&P's twice for coffee and wifi followed by a meal. The comfy couch by the pellet stove works great for this purpose. I watched lots of people come and go; on Sunday, it was packed. Bushel & Peck's contains multitudes. You can buy a sandwich, a piece of cheesecake, local beer, local cheese, local baked goods, really amazing pickles, homemade jam and used books. You can even get a line on a locally produced pellet stove just like the one that's toasting your toes. They're in the former Woolworth building in downtown Beloit, which gets a little livelier every time I visit. read more

Great selection, great concept. Just make sure that your skinny jeans are wrinkled just right and your painters hat or fedora has just the right level of wear. Don't bother with your Nikes, go ahead and buy the fair-trade sourced mocs to go with your pulled up socks and shorts.
