I really don't know why it took us so long to find this amazing place. Heard about it, saw it driving by it, but never shopped there until recently. At our first visit we were sold. Aside the obvious lineup of meats, there are variety of sausages. Great looking steaks. Fresh chickens. Our meat budget at our regular supermarket has since shrunk, because we now make a separate trip here. What's really great about this place, on top of the choices and quality, is the people. Everyone is very attentive, helpful, pleasant and knowledgeable. Last week I wanted to splurge on some wagyu, and I of course had to ask what the best way to cook was. I'm sure everyone who bought wagyu ask this question. The guy was super kind and patient to give me all the tips on how he'd do it. I'm not very confident about cooking meat -- it's always been my husband's thing. But now I know where to go, who to ask, and all that. Wagyu was, by the way, amazing. When it comes to butcher shops in the greater Reno area, "Butcher Boy Meat Market" has ranked at the top spot for decades. This family owned-and-operated business has been around since 1974 with origins that date as far back as the early-1930s. And after all of these years, I had come to this place for the first time on 7/3/2026. Located on W. Plumb Ln and tucked in between S. Arlington Ave and Plumas St., this place is in a quiet strip mall bordered by a Starbucks and other small businesses. Upon entry, you are immediately drawn by the aroma of so many excellent meats coming from all directions. Considering this was a day before the 4th of July, this place was packed with customers. The selections here are vast as they offer just about every part of the cow imaginable; everything from chuck roast, ribs, sirloin, brisket, flank, and much more. And they carry a ton of choices in seasoned tri-tip and ground beef to choose from. Additionally, you can find a vast amount of pork, chicken, lamb, and a ton of house-made sausages. In addition to the huge assortment of quality meats here, this place has an enormous amount of marinades, dry rubs, sauces, and a large freezer case that offers a ton of frozen options. I will say that this place is a bit more expensive than one of my other favorite butcher shops in Reno, "Blue Ribbon". For example, a cut of sirloin steak at Blue Ribbon is around $13/lb while Butcher Boy is priced at $19/lb. However, when making these comparisons, you have to factor in the meat curing preservation and how these animals were handled prior to being slaughtered. It is a whole process that can get quite scientific. After it was all said and done, I purchased some jalapeño bacon, bone-in pork chops, and some ground chuck. After taking this home and eventually grilling/cooking everything, I was quite impressed with the overall flavor that these meats offer. Especially with how tender and juicy everything came out. My favorite was the bacon as this really hit the spot for my 4th of July breakfast. All in all, "Butcher Boy Meat Market" is an excellent (yet pricey) butcher shop. Keep in mind that they are closed Sunday/Monday but open Tuesday through Saturday from 9am-7pm. With above average service and a huge variety of quality meats, I am giving them a respectable four-star rating. read more

Voted best place to buy meats! This is a fantastic butcher/ meat market. Their wagyu meatballs are fantastic for spaghetti and whatever else you can think of. I would recommend the jalapeño bacon and the mesquite bacon both thick and very tasty. Now I'm a bacon guy and this is the best tasting I have found. I purchased a 2# stuffed pork chop enough to feed 2 and will try it this weekend. They have a loyalty club using your phone #. Service was fast and friendly. They offer suggestions and cooking advice. Beautifully laid out. Call for times as they are different around holidays. Their website provides a plethora of information. Love this place. We started coming here recently and now it's our only source of meat we turn to for stocking up for daily meals and holiday. However, the last few times we have gone there is a table asking for donations. It's a good cause, as it's for Veterens but it's also really uncomfortable to be asked when you arrive and leave. This is our only issue with this place and does make us hesitate to swing by. Not saying it's not a worthy cause but we do donate on our own to many charities and have two veteran children. We want to be able to enjoy the shop and not feel that pressure to have to say no thank you when we visit Butcher Boy. Maybe there is a way they can provide info such as pamphlets at the register instead of someone posted up at the door. read more

Choices, choices, choices wow are there a lot of choices here at this old-fashioned meat market right off of Plumb in Reno. We're lucky to have places like this, stop by and enjoy it. I did find they have British Bangers, they were quite delicious. Next on my list is to try their Waghu beef, they have both American and from Japan. Think the grade is 8.5. My wife was out shopping and I asked her to locate some ground lamb. She called butcher boy and they said they had about 2 lbs of ground lamb. I needed 3 lbs, so I told her to get 1 lb beef also. We have purchased many cuts of meats here. Never got ground meat here so I asked her to check the % fat added. The guy on the phone said 'about 20%' for both. So she got 3 lbs total. She got it home and I started cooking. I'm telling you, that ground % was more like 50%. It was horrible. You can see in the pics, there is almost no meat left in the 2 pans. 2 lbs of lamb and barely 1 pound left. And the 1 pound beef...just look at the pics Just feel cheated after that. I had just had at a restaurant, Kurobuta heritage pork chops. The origin of the breed is in Berkshire, England. It a more tasty and tender pig species than the normal American pork you get most places. I wanted to see if I could buy it and cook it myself rather than pay restaurant prices. I found they had it here at Butcher Boy Meat market. Parking was easy and GPS brought me right here. Inside is very nice and clean and modern. The staff was knowledgeable answering my question on the pork and the different cut offered. They had a good selection of cuts of the Berkshire pork. The prices seemed reasonable, especially compared to the Wagyu beef prices. For the price, I'm picking pork! I decided on some rib chops bone in, you know the ones that look like little prime ribs, instead of the ones that look like little T-Bone steaks. They had some regular boneless loin chops for $8/lb, but the marbling was less. The staff was kind enough to actually cut me off 2 nice chops from the big roast. They had nice marbling and weighed about 14 oz. each for just $10.99/lb. Two nice big chops for $19.00! I thought that was a good deal compared to what I paid $36/lb for American Wagyu rib eye. Got them home and posed for pic of course and them seasoned and on the grill! Wow, yes, these were some of the most tender pork chops I ever had, a little fatty, but you know what they say, "fat is flavor"! This was as good as the restaurant chops for way less ... but yeah I did have to cook them myself and do dished later! I seared first and then used indirect heat on the grill to 140F. If you never had "Heritage" Berkshire pork, you need to try it! read more

I have been dying to get over here and check this place out! I pass by it all the time since UPS is there and one of my doc's. I finally made it over to order my fresh turkey. Reno desperately needed a place like this badly and I'm thrilled that it's 5 minutes away from my place. When I arrived there were like 10 people working behind the counters so I was helped right away. I always used to order fresh turkeys at the local butcher shop in the Bay Area town we lived in. I didn't take any photos yet but I will get some when I go pick up my turkey. My mouth was watering when I was looking into the beautiful display cases, so much so that I bought a pound of ground chuck. I never really cook with this but I've been told my Joes mama many times that it's better than any other ground meat because of the 20% fat content. It was $7 a pound which I thought was totally reasonable since it looked delicious. I made burritos with it last night and I could tell the difference straight away. Okay I'm going to be buying all my meats here from now on! Can't wait for my summer BBQ's I'll write a update after we have the thanksgiving turkey. This is a small shop but loaded with a huge variety of all types of meats. The staff is super helpful and answers every question including how to prepare any purchases. We bought one of their organic turkeys for Thanksgiving this year. We ordered it in advance and picked it up on our selected date. It was an amazing bird. One of the best. I highly recommend it. We paid a visit to Butcher Boy after getting a raving recommendation from a friend. My wife and I have been wanting to eat higher quality meat and decided to skip the grocery store and go straight to the butcher instead. It was easy to find and their selection was vast. We decided to go with a few different cuts to get an idea of how good their meats are. We ended up liking everything we purchased although I probably wouldn't buy the pre-made burger patties again. Their filet mignon, on the other hand, was a quality cut. The only aspect of this experience that I can speak negatively about was that nobody welcomed us when we walked in. There were quite a few employees working and no one bothered to say anything. However, once we were being helped and during checkout, both employees were friendly. read more

The Butcher Boy has been a great locally owned meat market since they were in their store in Sparks. I stood in line many times there to get one of their famous Prime Ribs at Christmas. In their new store they take orders prior to Christmas and you can schedule the day you want to go to the store to pick it up. Clint Jolly will even text customers to let them know if there is a special cut of meat that he has available. If you have never tried one of their marinated Tri-tips (I recommend the Black Rock marinade), you are in for a real treat. Their sausages are made fresh and the unique flavors are great on the barbecue. They also give Veterans a discount. read more

I get their pre-seasoned rib eye roast every Christmas and it's amazing. It's never overpriced, and actually, for the quality of the meat it's a great deal! I generally have to put mental blinders on when I go here because I am always tempted to buy way too much of their other selections. How have I lived this long without Butcher Boy in my life?! They have all different cuts of various types of meats.... It's a real carnivores dream! We've stopped in a few times recently for tri tip and bacon. Both were DELICIOUS and it felt so much better to buy local!
