    King crab legs
    Lori P.

Took a recent visit to Sierra Gold before Christmas and the line was out the door this day, which was not an issue and I didn't mind the wait knowing the quality of Seafood the store has. Their website says they are closed on Mondays, but during the holidays to *note they are sometimes open so it would've been worth a call to see if they're open. I did call before I went and I got the back warehouse person who told me the crab was around $60 a pound. It was actually closer to $70 a pound but since this is what my family planned on for main dinner, I stayed in line. Upon getting to the front of the line, I was told that there was only 2 pieces of the larger king crab that was in the $60+ range a pound, and that they had some frozen packages for a bargain price and some of the medium to large king crab was in the $56-57 range. I agreed and got a total of 5 to 6 pounds. What I thought was odd was I was rang up for 2 1/2 pounds at the higher amount and 2 pounds of the lower amount (which was odd since the smaller crab, obviously outnumbered the large) One staff member weighed the crab, and when I got to the register, she told the clerk that I actually had more than what I visibly saw weighed on the scale - maybe there was a difference of kilos to pounds? I'm not sure but I will give them the benefit of the doubt here. I did ask about this and I was told to not pay attention to what was on the scale.. since the line was long behind me, I continued on and just paid. What was more concerning was when I got home and all of the crab appeared to be the same size. Since this is a local business, I really want to continue to support them, but I found their pricing a little bit concerning or confusing the last couple of years I've shopped here and this year the crab definitely wasn't as large as in years past. With all of this being said my family enjoyed the crab as our annual Christmas Eve treat, and thought it was some of the freshest we've had not too salty, and very flavorful. Although some of it was shaved, it still was very prickly and always a challenge to eat, which makes it part of the fun, but it seemed a bit harder than in years past as I think the larger crab seems to break up easier. Crab has gone up every year significantly and it's kind of getting difficult to continue our Christmas Eve tradition but we'll continue to support them perhaps from their freezer section more which is labeled the 'bargain bin'.

Coffee-flavored crème brûlée (In the glass mugs); White-chocolate covered, lemon-flavored gelato (in the bag)

We stopped in at Sierra Gold to pick up a couple of things; my sister bought some sushi grade tuna and salmon to make homemade pokebowls. I hadn't really wanted anything but I did find a couple of desserts that piqued my interest: a coffee-flavored creme brûlée and a white chocolate-covered, lemon flavored gelato. The gelato was refreshing and not overly sweet. The crème brûlée was decadent and delicious and it took a lot of will power not to finish the two pieces I bought. The proprietors were really friendly and they were so nice to remember us. All in all we has another pleasant visit to Sierra Gold Seafood.

8/6/2024- My neighbor bbq'd some snapper last night.. and the aroma carried over into my backyard.. I had to text her to see what she was grilling.. She mentioned she picked up some snapper and sent me a pic of the poke marinade she's been using.. Of course, I had to check it out. I've been wanting to get some yellow tail to make a jalaleno Carpaccio.. but the piece was way too big.. (I'll wait until my boys come down).. Staff was very helpful and let me sample the poke with the marinade.. Also picked up some snapper- (although I like a cod).. but wanted to try it.. So glad to revisit.. I'll be back for some hamachi and some calamari steaks.. ..

NYE dinner: king crab legs with grilled lamb chops, rice and steamed broccoli. Simple but the flavors were the best!

This review is for the king crab legs that we bought from there for our New Year's Eve dinner! Omygoodness! They were fabulous and outstandingly beyond delicious. They were sizable and so fresh tasting. Best ones we've ever had for the 10+ years we've been having king crab legs for NYE dinners. Perhaps because it's the first time we've bought them from Sierra Gold. Although it's pricey ($46 per pound), they will be our source from here on for king crab legs! It's worth it! Service was super nice too---so helpful, everyone helped. Goal this year is to shop for seafood there more often!

Made lovely seared tuna snack for us from their sushi selection :)

You walk in to a wall of freezers. A few fresh options but mostly farmed fish. If you want fresh fish, I would pass on Sierra Gold.

Great fresh crab, long lines but if you have a large order you can pre-order and pick up without waiting in line.

It is also airy, light, and crispy. The crunch of the fish shattered lightly when you bite it without sticking heavily in your teeth. They also use a clean oil when frying the fish -- unlike other fish and chips I had in Lake Tahoe, burnt and the batter tasted old. The cod fish was hot, juicy, and flaky -- it really tasted good. I squeezed them with lemon and dip it in vinegar. Satisfyingly good! The clam chowder is packed with clam and not too heavily creamy -- it is just right. It brought back the time when I had a bowl of clam chowder in a restaurant in Monterey's Fisherman's Wharf. The staff were friendly and accommodating. The ambiance is bright and clean, so I will really recommend it! Also it is interesting that this restaurant is surrounded by fast food chain, if I were you, dine in here than eat a very unhealthy fast food burgers and fries.

Served hot (how I prefer it), the chowder was full of flavor with Clams, Potatoes and I think some mushroom. I thought the texture had a nice creaminess to it. Some in our party didn't care for it, but for me, I thought it was pretty good. A friend had the Ceviche. A couple of Shrimp top the dish, but it is mostly tiny bay shrimp. Other than the larger shrimp, the dish was unremarkable and not worth the money. We moved on to the fried zucchini. This dish was fresh from the fryer and served freakin' hot. And I do mean freakin hot. The dish was fine, but a tad bit on the oily side. More on that later. All of the starters are just a fancy lead up to the main course. If you're going to do something well, it better be what you are known for. Smee's use 100% WILD ALASKA COD "Hook & Line", received from their Alaskan Leader fishing fleet. The fish is made fresh on every order. I will say the "fish" was pretty good, but I think the oil was either old or not at the righ temperature because the resulting dish was oily and just plain soggy. While served hot, it was a doughy, soggy mess. We hoped for more but Smee's did not deliver.

Aside the obvious lineup of meats, there are variety of sausages. Great looking steaks. Fresh chickens. Our meat budget at our regular supermarket has since shrunk, because we now make a separate trip here. What's really great about this place, on top of the choices and quality, is the people. Everyone is very attentive, helpful, pleasant and knowledgeable. Last week I wanted to splurge on some wagyu, and I of course had to ask what the best way to cook was. I'm sure everyone who bought wagyu ask this question. The guy was super kind and patient to give me all the tips on how he'd do it. I'm not very confident about cooking meat -- it's always been my husband's thing. But now I know where to go, who to ask, and all that. Wagyu was, by the way, amazing. This place is a local gem.

This family owned-and-operated business has been around since 1974 with origins that date as far back as the early-1930s. And after all of these years, I had come to this place for the first time on 7/3/2026. Located on W. Plumb Ln and tucked in between S. Arlington Ave and Plumas St., this place is in a quiet strip mall bordered by a Starbucks and other small businesses. Upon entry, you are immediately drawn by the aroma of so many excellent meats coming from all directions. Considering this was a day before the 4th of July, this place was packed with customers. The selections here are vast as they offer just about every part of the cow imaginable; everything from chuck roast, ribs, sirloin, brisket, flank, and much more. And they carry a ton of choices in seasoned tri-tip and ground beef to choose from. Additionally, you can find a vast amount of pork, chicken, lamb, and a ton of house-made sausages. In addition to the huge assortment of quality meats here, this place has an enormous amount of marinades, dry rubs, sauces, and a large freezer case that offers a ton of frozen options. I will say that this place is a bit more expensive than one of my other favorite butcher shops in Reno, "Blue Ribbon". For example, a cut of sirloin steak at Blue Ribbon is around $13/lb while Butcher Boy is priced at $19/lb. However, when making these comparisons, you have to factor in the meat curing preservation and how these animals were handled prior to being slaughtered. It is a whole process that can get quite scientific. After it was all said and done, I purchased some jalapeño bacon, bone-in pork chops, and some ground chuck. After taking this home and eventually grilling/cooking everything, I was quite impressed with the overall flavor that these meats offer. Especially with how tender and juicy everything came out. My favorite was the bacon as this really hit the spot for my 4th of July breakfast. All in all, "Butcher Boy Meat Market" is an excellent (yet pricey) butcher shop. Keep in mind that they are closed Sunday/Monday but open Tuesday through Saturday from 9am-7pm. With above average service and a huge variety of quality meats, I am giving them a respectable four-star rating.

Manila Hong Kong Store and Kitchen falls firmly into the second category, and honestly that's exactly what a Saturday morning Filipino breakfast calls for. My family and I settled into the cozy, casual vibe without any fuss. This is not a place trying to be anything other than what it is, a neighborhood spot serving solid Filipino food at prices that don't require you to file a damage report afterward. We ordered tocino, fried bangus, and pork sisig, all served with rice, the way the Force intended. The tocino was sweet and caramelized in the right way, the bangus was crispy on the outside and flaky inside, and the sisig brought enough sizzle and flavor to round out the whole spread. We split a gulaman sago drink, which is exactly the kind of refreshing choice that makes you feel like you made a good decision even before the food arrives. Nothing on the table was going to earn a Michelin star, but everything was satisfying and made with care, which is a more honest measure of a good breakfast anyway. The store side of the operation is worth a browse too. Wide selection of Filipino market items, the kind of ingredients and snacks you're not finding at a regular grocery chain. My partner found a few things worth taking home, so the trip pulled double duty. Five stars for being exactly what it promises. Good food, fair prices, and a room that feels like someone's nanay runs it, which in this case is the highest compliment I can offer.

It is pretty clean , organized , and easy to navigate certain sections. I also like that the restaurant is right next door if you are hungry and want to grab a meal. However I do think their selection is pretty limited with the basic: sinigang ang baboy and Longinisa with garlic fried rice. Also keep in mind if you are getting the sinigang it is about $17. Like I said, probably the closest store you will get to a seafood city and pretty well stocked of items. I do recommend checking this one out .
