This place is awesome! Super trendy/modern/hipster diner vibe and awesome southern comfort food. You order a protein and however many sides you want. I got the Louisiana fried chicken sandwich and Mac n cheese. It was awesome - big juicy fried chicken breast in hot sauce topped with coleslaw. Mac n cheese was super cheesy and topped with bread crumbs. My friend got a Butchies burger with bacon and cheese and fries with gravy. The gravy is definitely poutine worthy gravy - dark brown and salty. The other item we tried was baba's cucumber salad (cucumber, sour cream, red onion and tons of dill) which was made fresh and fresh dill was trimmed off a dill plant... sooo goood. The atmosphere is bustling and you worry there won't be a table by the time your foot is ready, but it seems to work out. We went twice in the same week. The food each time was pretty good. The ordering choices can seem a little off putting, but it's about choice, so take a moment and think about what you want before stepping up. Front staff were very friendly and competent, which we haven't seen a lot of in our recent dining choices. At times it looked like the kitchen was falling a bit behind, but then you'd see bags upon bags of takeout being brought up and then the tables started rocking again. We might adjust this rating up after our next visit. Just need to make sure were not just in a honeymoon phase at finding a new place that isn't awful. read more

Been here twice now. The first time I ordered the smoked pork shoulder and two sides: fries and Mac and cheese. I got the pork shoulder on a bun with extra BBQ sauce on the side. I got to say, the pork shoulder was juicy and extremely delicious, cooked to perfection. The mac and cheese side was tasty. Not quite macaroni pasta but that didn't matter. Loved the fries too, thick and fried just right. I also loved how they give you thick sliced pickles and pickled onions as well. The second time I went I ordered the half BBQ chicken and two sides: hush puppies and cod fritters. The chicken was juicy, delicious and not dry at all. Loved the skin..seasoned so well. The hush puppies are to die for. Three big yummy portions that compliment the meat so well. The cod fritters were excellent as well. I think I'll continue to come here and try some other delicious items. So many delicious sides that compliment the meats. It seems as if some of the meats are rotated out, which I think is great but if you are looking forward to something you had last time it might not be there that day. Maybe you can request it, if its not written on the chalk board menu. Also, Kawarthas Dairy ice-cream here as well. Lots of benches outside for those beautiful sunny days. Very, very good! Everything was delicious, we ordered the Chicken Wings and the Smoked Pork Shoulder, and they were flavourful and satisfying! The sides were great as well! I've wanted to stop in for a long time and boy I'm glad I finally did!! The concept of quality but simple food done right is not lost in translation. The food, I had a chicken sandwich with bacon chilli mayo and three sides, Mac and cheese, devilled eggs, and watermelon salad, was amazing!! Okay, so I almost went 4 stars because of the wait for the food but figured anything this good was worth waiting for. Very good by any BBQ standards but especially good by Canadian BBQ standards. They are typically overpriced and underwhelming. The last time I found anything comparable was Smokin' Tony's in Guelph. This is better. On to the food. I had the Hot Chicken sandwich. Very good but not quite Gabardine (Bay & Richmond in Toronto). Had the hushpuppies as my side, excellent and a must have. Mrs. AC had the Chicken Fried Steak and it was fantastic. Best I've tasted north of Texarkana. Not over-breaded, good piece of steak and very tasty. She selected the fries as a side, also very good (not quite 5 Guys but solid). Hand spun shake was also a plus, with Kawartha Dairy ice cream +++ All in all an excellent experience. I will be returning and hoping for the brisket to be on the smoker next time. I love eating here! So glad Whitby has such an amazing eatery. My favourite is the 1/2 smoked chicken. So juicy and flavourful! Hush puppies are delicious and fries are fresh cut. Ask for the remoulade sauce on the side. Ice cream from Kawartha's Dairy is very generous. A single scoop is gigantic! Washrooms are large and clean. My only concern is that it can be quite chilly with people opening the door so try not to sit beside the two doorways. read more

I finally got to try this place! They did a great job revamping the spot to make it clean and modern, while keeping the diner feel. Butchies is the southern comfort food we have been missing in Durham Region. Most places are all about the barbecue, but the chef has done a great job offering items that other BBQ joints and other restaurants don't, thus making it a smart unique selling point. With items like country fried steak and hush puppies, it takes me back to trips to the U.S. Specialty bottled root beers are pricey ($4.75) so you might want to stick with fountain pop ($2.25). The smoked pork shoulder was tender, but it needed more smoke flavour and heavier seasoning. The BBQ sauce on the table helped! The sides were good. Really enjoyed the mac & cheese, green beans, and hush puppies. I was pretty disappointed with the devilled eggs though. Nothing like the ones in the website photos. I can make them better and more flavourful. Overall, I am happy with the experience. Maybe next time I'll try the pie! Also, the service is good so make sure to tip! read more

Saw an ad in the local paper showcasing best patios. Staff greeted me well but I felt rushed to pick something off of the menu and was disappointed with the selection but I ordered the country fried steak with Mac and cheese and hush puppies. Sat on a picnic table that had chunks of food on the seat and table top. The "patio" is a gravel space with uneven patio stones as walkways resembling a lot in a provincial park campground. My food arrived in a friendly and timely manner but the steak was riddled with grizzle, hush puppies were over cooked and the Mac and cheese had an odd flavour that I can even describe. The staff is friendly, service is quick but the food was simply awful. Won't ever be back. read more

Saw it on tv and decided to try it for dinner tonight with my brother. Simple concept, just pick a main item and pair it with 1, 2 or 3 sides. My brother had the smoked Pork Shoulder with Fries and Cucumber Salad while i had the Buttermilk Fried Wings with Fries and Green Beans. Wings were huge but could have been cooked a little longer, especially the large drumettes. The salad and beans were small portions. Free refills for pop. Saw an employee refill a customers drink while I had to get up and ask for myself. Be consistent. If you do it for one then do it for everyone. read more

I have been to Butchie's 3 times, all times, food and service were great. Except yesterday, being the last time. I have brought my own sugar free BBQ sauce in all times due to my dietary restrictions (Ketogenic/Sugar Free) and posted a photo on Instagram of my meal, my friends meal and my BBQ sauce (another Whitby smokehouse) that I had brought in (Again, like every other time) and was called out in my comments about the BBQ sauce and being told I was not allowed to bring Outside Food/Drinks (understandable) so why do I get picked on vs. 1, speaking to your staff that worked this shift, 2, PRIVATELY messaging a customer about your concerns right away, versus doing so after mentioning you feel 'blasted' in the comment thread. I then blocked Butchie's of all social media and let my Ketogenic family know of said experience. I will never say that the food is bad, because it is GREAT but learn some social media etiquette and 'attack' your staff before you do with a customer... in my opinion. As a person who follows a Ketogenic diet, I will stalk a restaurant's menu well in advance to plan what I eat. If your staff would of 'ENFORCED' this as you say the 1st, 2nd or even 3rd time I could of saved myself my own sugar free sauce and used the ones you so called can provide. Let it be known you have options for your customers vs letting them know AFTER the fact. read more

This is my first time here. We've driven by enough times but I finally came in and boy am I happy I did. We had the buttermilk wings (wow so tasty) and the country fried steak. Steak was lovely! This is our first visit here. It's new and popular and with the amount of people waiting for their orders while sitting at tables, seating is extremely limited (we ate outside where there is overflow picnic tables - hope the rain holds off). And when it's busy you will have to be patient. Due to the design it's awkward to order as well as wait for your order. Another small thing - and it's a review so I will mention it - outdoor garbage was overflowing - but really that's a small thing and understandable. Because we ate outside we had to have everything in to-go containers adding to waste and garbage. Also parking can be a Gong Show. Our meals all came without napkins... small things. The good: staff is friendly, they brought our order ($$) outside to where we were sitting. The food....the food is fresh and excellent, it's obvious why there are so many people here. So yes - the food is a must stop place to eat. The pies look homemade and the ice cream is just fantastic. Great people restaurant with a great story. We are local - walking distance so we will definitely return. I would recommend this to friends. We wish this local business a success and look forward to our next visit. read more
