Wow, its been 12 years!! Since then ive gone through many gyms both good and bad but i still think fondly about the time I was at Butch's. I loved that it was a neighborhood gym (and while i was there i ran into people i grew up with!). Good boxing store for kids and adult. Consider like after school program for active kids. Like hyperactive center for kids who needs some extra activities after the school or over the weekend. Professional stuff and zero tolerance for bullying each other for the kids. They do have monthly or yearly programs available upon request. I've been a member since 2012 and I'm not going anywhere! I still come here 2-3x/week. You get the best of both worlds here; you're learning a useful skill while getting a great workout. I've seen many members come and go, and all have shown great improvement before leaving. As a 10-year member, I am still amazed when I see how much better a person performs after just 3-4 classes. Butch and Amanda have a great way of making their classes feel like a private session for everyone. For those who are concerned about the technical aspect of boxing, I think the methods that Butch and Amanda teach transfer over very well during sparring and contact drills. Both my daughter & myself go to NY MMA, so I wanted to share both of our experiences. The gym's atmosphere is friendly and respectful - from the coaches to both the adult and child students. Kids class: Signed my 12 yr old daughter up for the 30 day free trial. She attended 2 classes a week for the month long trial period and since she enjoyed the class so much , she asked to continue going. She has been going now for several months and still enjoys it. The kids practice MMA/boxing skills including kickboxing and grappling, and get a good workout each class. One on one sessions: Since my daughter liked the kids' class so much, I decided to try out some sessions with Coach Amanda, since I have never done boxing before. I was looking for a fitness class that could work around my foot/ankle issues and Coach Amanda's sessions work perfectly! You get a great workout with Coach Amanda and it can be tailored to your needs. I have been going to the sessions for a few months now and am very glad I decided to give it a try!! My daughter and I were looking for a different type of workout instead of going to the dreaded gym and we found it! Coach Juan is great! He is very patient, encouraging and understanding. I have a knee problem and he modifies my workout so I don't hurt myself. We use every minute of our private training sessions, he doesn't let us give up. We walk out of there drenched! Hello, my name is Evan Thomason Before I joined Butch's Boxing and MMA there was a dark cloud hovering over me. I had already lost 60 pounds, but still I was not happy. Family drama ruled my life. I was not just angry. I was mad at everyone and everything. I was closed off. Things were not good. I was unhappy. AVOID. I went to this gym for a free trial. I went the first day and not the second day because I got busy w/ my college studies. When I go in the next week he asks me where I was and I told him I got busy with school. He said not to give that kinda shit and then he later told me he doesn't like smart guys like me. He seems to have something against those who want to get an education. Overall I wouldn't recommend. He shows favoritism to certain demographics. He lacks patience. If you're looking for a friendly neighborhood gym that moves away from traditional gyms NY MMA is a great place to go. They offer mma/grappling classes and boxing for teens kids and adults. The most popular class is boxing. Before you can do the advance class they get you acclimated to boxing basics in the beginner class while getting your fitness level up. The coaches Butch and Amanda are great! They know what they're talking about with years of experience and trophies to back it up. The people there are friendly and they range from having years of experience to only a few months even weeks. Its a great place to learn boxing and to get a great work out. If you're looking to just get in shape and not hit in the face. They have private lessons too that are more fitness oriented if that's more your style. In terms of the set up The gym is filled with a few heavy bags a boxing ring and free weights and other boxing equipment. It is fully lined with mats and there is an open space used for shadow boxing. The waiting room has an elliptical and treadmills. I really like the lavender color of the room and there's an awesome couch where parents can sit and watch the classes. Joined this gym last year when I saw a promotion for half price, which was honored upon signing up. The first day coach Butch and Amanda were welcoming and stayed a later to accommodate my schedule. For my 40th. B-day my wife gave me a 3month membership to NY-MMA. Best gift ever. Three years later am still there. Boxing, Muay Thai & no gi jiu jitsu i've done it all here. I started at 170lbs. drop to 147lbs build my cardio and in the best shape of my life. Not bad for 40+ yrs. old. I have been attending NY-MMA for a little over 3 months now. I showed up with very little to no technical boxing training, and extremely out of shape yet Amanda and Butch allowed me to push myself and train with the more advanced class and I cannot thank them enough. Even though I am a slow learner and do not always pick up everything they have to show, the other members are more than willing to slow down and make sure you pick up the lesson, even if I rather speed through it most of the time. After 90 days, my boxing is greatly improved, as well as my over-all physical fitness and health. Butch's Boxing has been the best thing to ever happen to my son. My son is a teenager and extremely shy, he wanted to learn boxing but he wouldn't go in to the gym with other people there. Coach Amanda saw the stress in my son and gave me her cell phone number and said we could come in when no one else was there. It worked. My son started a week later with private lessons with Butch and he loved it. From that moment on my son became a happier and more content teenager. Butch's workouts are the best thing for your physical and mental well being. My son sings in the shower after his boxing class. He has been going to the teen class and Level I or II class for the past 18 months and I see the difference in his tolerance level and emotions. He has more patience, is calmer and more content. I've been coming here for 5 months and love it. I had minimal experience boxing or wrestling, but wanted a different workout that would get me excited to go, as opposed to a boring gym.
