Without doing anything wrong or any explanation, the coach pulled him out of the gym and took him to the first floor. When we were trying to ask what happened, he shut the door at our face. As a new immigrant, my son doesn't fully understand English and got totally scared by the attitude. He couldn't stop crying even after getting home. I took my girls here a year ago because they were very shy and afraid of everything and as a mom I felt like I needed to do something about. Everyday , day after day training at Tiger Shulmann my daughters became two confident, brave and strong little girls. I could not believe how much they have changed !!! This review is solely about my experience dealing with the school trying to sign up my kids. I called to sign up my 3 boys and I was for sure gonna sign them up because I read the reviews and have family who have their kids in other locations and they had a good experience. Well I called and spoke to Shihan. I told her I have 3 boys I wanted to sign up and explained that I was for sure gonna sign them up. We set up a trial class and she said we recommend the parents to be there and I said sure we will definitely try. Well , what happened was , me and my husband were stuck at work and I had my sister take them to the scheduled class. When they got there the lady Shihan said no they can't take the class because the parents aren't here with them . First I was shocked ! Why ?? A lot of parents do have to work you know and it so happened that we were stuck that day and there was no way to make it on time. My sister told me the lady was so rude and didn't wanna hear anything else. This was very unprofessional of the school especially because they didn't tell me this in advance . We ended up wasting time and energy packing up the kids and going there only to be told NO! Do you guys understand that parents work ?! Do you understand that not everyone has a 9-5 job ?! What about the kids that have one parent ... they won't be accepted cause the other parent is not there ?! Or kids that have other caretakers ?! I mean their rule is just that plain STUPID inconvenient and they were beyond rude and unprofessional! The lady sent me a message expecting me to run back and sign up my kids after what happened?! No way in hell !!! You can keep your unprofessionalism and I will go somewhere where I'm welcome , understood and respected! Your loss not mine cause there are plenty of great schools around ! If I could give them 10 starts for kindness, I would. They did an amazing job working with my autistic son Vincent. While he did not always participate, they were always incredibly patient and really took the time to make sure he got the most out of every class. When we had an issue with my sons behavior, the owner as well as the teacher would sit down with me right away and help me address it with my son. I can not say enough positive things about the team that works here, and the benefits of a practice like this for children. This was the first time my autistic son has been welcomed in to a regular activity with open arms by caring people who truly wanted to help him become the best version of himself. read more

I wish I would've read these reviews before I signed up. It would've told me everything I needed to know. I signed up my five-year-old son for classes long story short he is not happy and does not like it . He cries hysterically at the mere mention of going. In the 2 months since he signed up he has missed 7 classes . Twice a week he had a class so that's 8classes a month. He only attended 9 out of the 16. The classes he did attend I had to bribe him to get him there...after expressing this issue to them, which they visually saw with their own eyes. every class he attended he was not interested nor was he interacting with the class. They wouldn't even assist him or help him. He would just sit there with his eyes wondering around the room. No one payed any attention to him. (That's a whole separate issue) They are refusing to issue me a refund as if the contract was set in stone. I was even willing to pay for 3 months and uniforms and take the difference. They refused to accommodate me. Instead they recommended I pass the account down to a friend or family member. The money was more important to them than the child's happiness or level of comfort. Let me also mention the overcrowding . It's impossible to give individual attention with 40 students on the mat. It's very disappointing. I will never recommend tiger SHULMANS To anyone that I know and I will spend the next couple of weeks on my social media platforms making sure I encourage others to avoid this place at all cost...They just want your money. I've been training at a Tiger Schulmann's for approx. 7 years now and have trained at a few different schools. I have been at Bayside for over a year and quickly everyone there became like family. I love learning from Sensei Arce & Shihan Gotthoffer and the student body there is vast and ranged (different levels, males and females to go with, etc) so I feel like my Martial Arts and fitness have climbed to a higher level since transferring to this location. As for people talking about just paying for the belt, it is based on class attendance, but if you train and your skills are not advancing they will not advance you. I know many students who have sat at belt levels for long periods of time, regardless of class count. They have also added a test that any student due to advance to the next level must pass. And, as always, you have to be invited to test for your black belt. This test only happens twice a year and you are tested in both kickboxing and grappling. You will have to spar and grapple multiple rounds, without a break, in front of a panel of judges (consisting of the highest ranking members of the whole organization). It is not easy to pass and people train / prepare very long for this test. As with anything you will only get from this gym what you put into it (time, dedication, passion). There are students that go there just for fitness, students that go there just for kickboxing, and others that really focus on the technique and skill. Like I said, it's a vast range of students. I am lucky enough to have many like minded training partners at this gym, plus Sensei Arce himself is an actual MMA fighter and a damn good teacher. It is always an honor to have the opportunity to train/spar with him. I have always been athletic but I hate just going to the gym. I wanted to learn Martial Arts (mainly kickboxing and Jiu Jitsu) and having the opportunity to work towards a black belt was important to me. Their schedule worked out with mine, and then having multiple locations has proven to be a huge benefit, not only for the opportunity to train with students from other schools, but I have also moved a few times and still never missed a beat with training. I am 28 going on 29 and have never been in better shape, had more confidence and enjoyed a 'hobby' more. read more

My daughter (5 1/2) has been attending this school for the last 2 years and I have to start by saying what an amazing place this is & I would highly recommend it for any child or adult. When I first convinced my husband that we should enroll our 3 1/2 year old into a mixed martial arts program he thought I was nuts. 2 years later we would both say it was one of the best decisions we have ever made. Tiger Schulman's of Bayside is an amazing school! My two boys have been going there for over two years and they absolutely love this place. Before my kids started going to Tiger Schulman's I was teaching them martial arts at home. Within months, their passion for learning far surpassed my ability to properly teach them. At the same time our family dynamic was changing as their mother and I were in the middle of a divorce and custody battle. As their young worlds were drastically changing I wanted to give my kids the ability to continue their love for martial arts while also giving them the opportunity to have a sense of control over something in their lives. No matter what happened at home they had the opportunity to give their all while they were on the mat. After reviewing many schools, I knew TSMMA Bayside was the right place. Having a background in martial arts my standards were high. I wanted the boys to have superior training and given their home situation, I wanted a school that had a strong support system. TSMMA Bayside met both criteria and then some! My boys are challenged based on their capabilities. They have trained for and will compete in tournaments. They have learned about discipline which translates in other areas of their lives. For instance, they can see the effects of how eating too much junk food or not getting enough sleep affects their training and therefore make better decisions for themselves. TSMMA Bayside is more than a school and has become like an extended family. My boys have been to birthday parties, playdates, and summer camps with fellow students and have made lifelong friends. And they changed instructors and my kids started to find them the new one boring. Then my son was due for his black belt test but they told him he couldn't take it because they didn't have enough kids ready for the test and he have to wait another year to take it because it wasn't worth their while. I am not going to trash TSMMA. Tiger Schulman's has a set curriclum of what is required to get a black belt. You know exactly what you need to progress in rank. Tiger Schulmans is without a question very commercial. You can feel it while attending classes, which are somewhat artificially happy. If you are advanced you can will move to advanced classes quicker. You will improve, you will lose weight, and you will learn at least the very basics of self defense. I would say that they are at least as good as crossfit in terms of training with far less injuries. The con? Tiger Schulmans is very very very expensive. They "rank" you on how many classes you attend, not by tests or "degrees" of skill, so basically if you pay for whatever amount of time, you'll get a black belt regardless, eventually. How they went from a "Karate" school to an Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) school? Does NOT make any sense. It's like you saying you were once a boxer, but wants to appeal more to the public, so you start calling it MMA. BORING classes. My 7 year old son has been attending for a year, and my husband joined in January, and the results so far are excellent. My son's grades , and more importantly, his listening/behavior skills have improved significantly, he is much less impulsive and more respectful at home since joining TSMMA. He sees this as just the beginning and is committed to consistency. After a year of passive exercise and no results (riding stationary bike, occasionally lifting weights at home, kind of sort of eating better) he has progressed more in the 5 weeks at TSMMA than his efforts over the past couple years on his own. He is kicking @ss!! The key factor I believe is that the instructors of Bayside TS genuinely CARE about each of their students, and the students feel it. This school is not just about teaching martial arts techniques, but in addition includes teaching discipline, focus, respect, nutrition, devotion, commitment, and life lessons that improve overall quality of life extending beyond just the martial art classroom. For the children, they have wrap ups where the instructors speak to them about values - respecting parents at home, being responsible for belongings, taking ownership of their actions, making good choices, getting good grades, etc. and how all of these things tie into moving up in belts. These are key lessons that I have not found other martial arts schools offer. I have called several times to discuss home issues, which they have re-enforced as lessons either in class or privately with him one-on-one. My son deeply respects and admires his instructors, and has become a better listener. They are not just class instructors, they are mentors to the children as well. I joined Tiger Schulman's of Bayside over a month ago. I enrolled my son (4.5y) and daughter (6y) for 2 classes a week to work on their discipline and self-confidence and I am surprised how quickly i can see the difference in their behaviors. my son is calmer and have more self-control over his reactions and my daughter is a bit more confident in social interactions. both of them enjoy going to class and they ask me to send them more often. I looked for a while and registered my kids in trial classes in 3 other martial arts schools before joining TS. nothing impressed me like Tiger Schulman's of Bayside. Shihan and Censi are amazing instructors whom my son take as role models. he wants to get the blackbelt one day like them and that keeps him motivated to work harder. The staff is amazing, professional, and very friendly. I like how they greet you with smile every time you walk in. even the class helpers are very nice to the kids. the facility is very very clean (especially the bathrooms- always clean and smell nice) which is something I care about during my weekly experience. the parents have a nice place to wait and watch their kids on screens unlike other places I saw were parents are crammed in one small place or sit over few benches in front of the class (which could have been distracting to my kids) . I am picky mom and so far I am satisfied with my experience at TS. I highly recommend it! read more

My husband and I were deeply concerned with the lack of focus, confidence, drive and coordination our son had. This was a genuine concern. So we search for a karate school with the hopes this would help. We must have been to 5 different schools in our area. Each one felt made us feel like a cash cows. Go in, pay, train and leave with very few class options. Until we found TSMMA Bayside. We had our son try out a class. Our son had no idea what karate even was but his sensei walked him through every step of the way. At the end of class they would have all of the kids sit and would basically talk to them as a class to encourage & motivate them. SOLD!!!! The fact that it's not just only about the training but about the overall development as a person is what got us. 4 years and counting! I've personally, have recently joined to better my own health. The overall classes are well structured and just a lot of fun. The fact that they have a lot of classes throughout the day and even on weekends helps because It's a "must" that I have enough time to spend with my family. Above all this school cares. TSMA Bayside is a great place to come, My daughter has been training here since July 2018, My son started is in the Cubs program since Feb 2019 and they both really enjoy it. The classes help them with discipline, structure, focusing and help to build their confidence which is vital in their everyday life. We are really happy with Sensei Julio, He's really great with the kids and gives them the attention they need. Classes can be full at times but he makes sure he gets around to everyone and he makes himself available after or before classes. Shihan is great and there for any questions and having a touch base to see how the kids are progressing. I am so proud of both of my kids, my daughter will be testing for low yellow. I started my 90 challenge and training in December of last year and it's been great. Eating better and working out has helped me feel better and also something additional I share with my kids as well. Now some wonder with the pricing of course thats always a big talking point but cost is always there but here you get what you pay for and overall for your kids you want the best!. Do not go to this place to learn good martial arts. It is pricey and they use unscrupulous business tactics. When I registered for a trial group lesson, the lead teacher called me the day before the lesson to make sure that I show up. After the lesson when I was ambiguous about enrolling, he used clever sales tactics, i.e., eye contact, indirect pressure, personal attention, etc., to get me enrolled via credit card. He said I could disenroll anytime. When I got home and told a mid-teen relative who was already a third degree black belt in tae kwon do, he told me I had made a grave mistake. He said they can't teach and do not know much about the martial arts. That the Asian martial arts businesses on Northern Boulevard were more competent and cheaper. At the time, the Asian ones charged $60-80/month and Tiger Schulman's Karate was charging around $350/month. I noticed in the weeks ahead that students and instructors at Tiger Schulman's were white. No Asian students or teachers despite the fact the business is located in an area where plenty of Asians live. Excuse me for sounding racist, but something is wrong when there are no Asians in a martial arts business. I made very little improvements during the two months I was there and the instructor never helped me. Instead, he had other students in my group work with me. So much money for instruction and the teacher never helps me? Ripoff. I had to quit because I had to go to school fulltime. I told the instructor who signed me this and he said he's sorry I had to leave and wished me luck. To my surprise, my credit card was billed monthly. I called and asked why I was charged despite the fact that I had informed them I could no longer continue the program. The man who signed me up told me I had to fill out paperwork and submit proof that I was a fulltime student. I signed the paperwork and submitted the proof yet I was still charged for two subsequent months. He told me it took time for the paperwork to go through. I told him I wanted them to credit the amount of money charged to me card after the month I had left, and he said that'll take a few months. I never was credited the $1050. I wanted to take them to small claims court but I was too busy since I was in grad school and things were too intense. This business is a scam. read more

I was a former student of this particular location of Tiger Schulmann's for about 8 years. I'm not judging the quality of fighting you will be taught, even though their priority is more so fitness than the Martial Art itself. None the less when I had to stop going to this school for a multitude of reasons and so I had my last meeting with the "head instructor" and by head instructor I mean the man who doesn't nearly teach as much as he should to retain that title. And when I had this final meeting I was treated with a high level of disrespect. Like I said I had trained at this location for years. I grew up with the Instructors and fellow class mates. I held everyone in high regard and it didn't matter. Once I couldn't pay the tuition anymore, I was shunned.If you are to ever sign up with this school in particular just try to keep this in mind, 1)It is a business first and a martial arts school second in every regard. 2)You are a client first and a person second. 3)The instructor believes he is always right...about everything. 4)The tuition will fluctuate from the high price it already is to even higher. Just give it time. 5)You will have to buy their overpriced training gear because they receive kick backs from the company that produces it. 6)They will ask you to "help them and pitch in" to clean up their school. That is because they are to cheap to pay for a cleaning crew. 7)There is no testing for each belt so you getting your next belt will be based on attendance and basically whenever they feel like it. 8)They do not teach Jiu-Jitsu despite what they advertise. They teach their version of grappling which they call "Close range Self Defense". Its effective but be prepared to be taught little or no stand up grappling. and lastly... 9)Their main goal is fitness and not martial arts. They teach in a good neighborhood. A safe area in the suburbs of Queens. Their main clientele are doctors and lawyers and other businessmen because they are the only people who can afford this knowledge, It would almost be a great school if the man running it wasn't getting in his own way. read more

Tiger Schulmann's is interested first and foremost in getting your money and NOT refunding if your kids decide to drop out. Tiger Schulmann's owes me about $3000.00 !!!!. My boys attended the chapter on Bell Boulevard (the one that now moved on Northern Blvd). I paid in advance for my two boys, because I did want them to learn martial arts. I will not comment on their quality of training, because this is not my beef with them, but, still I don't see to many martial arts experts coming out of their doors. I viewed it more as a way for my boys to learn discipline. They went for a couple of years and, as they grew up, they both told me it was not worth it. So, I said, OK - we will get a refund for the whatever you did not use up. FAT CHANCE! Tiger Schulmann's didn't even want to hear about it. They told me the money was NON-REFUNDABLE. I told them they were crooks. They just turned a blind eye. There was no way of persuading them to give my back my money. This is not small sum we are talking about. I have been thinking about this for a long time. I think I will have to report them to BBB. read more

As a student here for almost 3 years I have found not only instructors to learn martial arts but people who genuinely care. From the first e-mail I sent regarding a free class they knew my name and when they met me didn't make me feel like just another overweight person. They asked me what I needed from the school to achieve my goals and since then they have never failed me to getting to where I need to be. I have lost @46 lbs and still have a way to go but am never discouraged. Twelve years ago I made a decision which had an amazingly profound affect on the lives of both my son and myself. I signed us both up for classes at the Tiger Schulmann's Mixed Martial Arts school in Bayside, New York. Now at ages 17 and 54 respectively, we continue to train at this school and continue to enjoy the countless benefits that come with being part of the Tiger Schulmann family. When I first joined the school I was asked, besides from learning self defense which other goals were important for my son and I to strive to achieve. I highly recommend TSMMA Bayside. My son has been taking classes at this mixed martial arts school for almost 2 years. He has thrived under the tutelage of Shihan Gotthofer and Sensei Arce. These two run a first-rate operation. They know all the students by name. My son's progress is very clear to me. As a new student, he was so shy. He also lacked self-confidence. He is now so much more outgoing, making friends and his confidence is skyrocketing. At this school, the instructors stress self-defense and a no quit attitude. They challenge the children each class to do their individual best. My son likes the discipline. He loves hitting the bags, sparring and grappling. Each time he learns and perfects a new move I can see the huge smile on his face. He gets a work out while having fun. After 2 years he is still learning and growing.
