Laminated Mafaldine: Asparagus, cherry tomatoes, white wine, herbed goat cheese, lemon zest

This meal was one of the best things I've had at Butterhorn. (Laminated Mafaldine: Asparagus, cherry tomatoes, white wine, herbed goat cheese, lemon zest). It had great flavor, the pasta was perfectly al dente, portion was just right. I was sad the spaghetti was removed, but I might like this better. I also love that shrimp cocktail.

Fantastic experience. Nearly a 5 star experience for us but it just fell short in a few areas. Let me start by saying the atmosphere is delightful. Classy but comfortable. I felt like I was home. Well a fancy home. Everyone in our party has f 6 commented on the vibe. Outstanding. We were there for Sunday brunch, reservations were easy to do on line and our table was waiting for us. The owner sat us and we were greeted promptly by the staff. We ordered the Carmel roll and Butterhorns to start. Off the charts good! For entrees we had corned beef hash with poached eggs, quiche of the day and biscuits and gravy. Everyone loved their food. Perfectly cooked and seasoned. We would definitely go back. The only few misses is that we did not get everything we ordered. It was fine as we had plenty of food and one corned beef hash came out as a pile of potatoes with only a sprinkle of meat. The kindly brought out extra meat but that was a significant miss by the kitchen. Personally I prefer smaller bites of corned beef or small shreds as just a few of the larger bites were kinda tough. I might not have experienced that with smaller pieces of meat or smaller shreds. In spite of forgotten items, and 1 poorly plated meal this place is excellent. I'm sure the next time we go it will be perfect. I will note that the brunch menu is smaller than most I've seen but if everything on it is this good, then it's a perfect sized menu!

My wife and I have heard a lot about the Butterhorn and felt we needed to give it a try. As foodies we eat upscale style restaurants often. To be honest I was a bit disappointed. The Butterhorn Croissant/dinner roll,as it were, was ok. (Looked like a croissant bite ate like a dinner roll). What turned me off was that the inside of mine was not completely done. The Shrimp cocktail wasn't bad, it was a refreshing take on the classic shrimp cocktail, presentation was ok. My wife's main course was the blackened Cod. Now it's always a skiddish choice to order a fish like this because Cod flavors change quickly and must be handled appropriately or you get some funky or ammonia type flavors. Typically great restaurants should know this and handle it appropriately not to mention source out reliable vendors. Unfortunately this is not the case for the Butterhorn. The fish was almost inedible. The other components of the dish , such as cauliflower purée and pineapple cilantro cabbage slaw was not flavorful on its own let alone in pairing and there wasn't much of it and why so much cauliflower purée? The proportions was just a major issue. The adobe pork was presented well on a corn purée. The pork itself was nicely cooked and tender. It was nicely seasoned however again proportions and balance were missing. The purée was sweet and I understand the direction it just didn't compliment the pork well. There was also so much purée the rest of the dish was swimming in it. The dessert was a chocolate torte with ice cream. It was just over the top sweetness. The torte was thick hard and just difficult to eat. To top it off. I am not understanding why anyone would eat or use the dinner mints located next to the toilet. Get rid of it, it's just nasty. The good: I love the atmosphere. The waitress was attentive and friendly. She truly loved her job and did a great job attending our needs. The pomegranate lemonade was truly amazing! Overall, I just wished for better food at this price point. Perhaps I will try it again at a later date but may need to go with traditional items such as steak and potatoes.

Wow!! This place is absolutely delicious! We WILL be back. The flavors are..craft flavors if that makes sense! Unique tastes. They were also very welcoming of our kids even though it's a fancy style restaurant which is definitely appreciated! Side note, the bathrooms are beautiful :)

This is where I had my birthday dinner. I was pretty excited for it, having read how yummy the food is. We did have reservations, which were set up a few days before hand. When you walk in, the host is right there to greet you. He was very professional and friendly. We started out at the bar, since we had a couple of minutes before our reservation time. The bartender was very friendly and busy, but when someone in our group asked for an explanation on a drink, he was able to give personalized details. You didnt feel rushed, which I liked. Our drinks were nicely presented and very tasty. Our table was a booth, near the back of the dining all. It seemed that they had two waitresses, with one training. It seemed like owners/managers were on the floor, placing food, keeping up with water, helping staff. That's good, shows they care. We had one gentleman, the man who was hosting, come and apologize for the wait, which I felt wasn't much of a wait at all. He stated that the kitchen for backed up with getting a large amount of orders all at once. I would say so, since there was a large table of about 10, and this is a small restaurant. That'll bottle neck any kitchen. For starters, we shared Beet Culurgiones. The filling and accents were good, the cururgione would have been better to me if they were not greasy. The greasiness killed it for me. Butterhorns, which are amazingly light, fluffy, with a blessing of salt. It is a must order. I also had a Curried Pumpkin soup, which was amazing! I would go back just for this soup! My main dish was a Kansas City Strip 14 oz. Dry Aged 35 Days, cooked med-med rare. This was very good! No abuse needed, just it's natural juices and the chefs seasonsing. It came with baked beans, NOT from a can, and fingerling potatoes. These were cooked well, and very delicious. I was stuffed at this point. Having been my birthday, I was gifted a dessert from the restaurant, which I picked the Whiskey Pumpkin Tart. It was very cute when presented. The two things I didnt love, was that the crust seemed to have a dash too much salt, which was manageable if you didnt esr the side crust. And the meringue seemed to fall apart, as it was very gooey. It was toasted beautifully! Over all very nice experiences. Friendly staff, which could answer questions about the dishes and drinks. I'd go back.

This was an unexpected discover in Bismarck. Located on Main street, the outside of this establishment is unassuming, but the interior is an upscale, almost olde England vibe. My work friends and I sat down to interesting cocktails which included ingredients like lavender, creme de fleur, and aloe water (The "Secret Garden" was refreshing and light tasting, yet spirit forward.) Beef tongue bruschetta, scotch eggs, pork belly, and a beef bavette (a cut of steak that seems to be becoming more popular) a blend of classic and modern offerings that I surprisingly showed up on the same menu. Everything came out on point and mindfully plated. Oddly, the namesake butterhorns (basically a buttery crescent roll) were not the highlight, but rather the beef tartar was!

For a small restaurant, they also have an impressive wine selection. We started with the garlic bread, hot olives, and meatballs -- all of which were flavorful, balanced, and absolutely delicious. For entrées, our table had the breaded walleye, the Bolognese pasta, and the Porchetta. The walleye and Bolognese were outstanding, but unfortunately the Porchetta was a big letdown. The skin was chewy rather than crisp, with a thick layer of unrendered fat beneath it, and most concerning, it still had visible pig hair. I was expecting the classic combination of crackling skin, melting fat, and tender pork, but instead it was oddly undercooked on the outside, dry inside, and after biting into hair, I really lost my appetite for it. We finished with tiramisu and a torte, and both desserts were excellent -- a strong way to end the meal. Overall, Anima Cucina has a lot going for it: charming atmosphere, friendly staff, great starters, and standout entrées (other than the Porchetta). I'd happily return for the appetizers, pasta, fish, and desserts, but I'd avoid the Porchetta based on my experience.

Not unlike when grandma decorated her house in 1973 and never changed a thing. It is not bad or anything, it is just maybe not a great backdrop for poorly executed over priced food. Service was great, like most places in Bismarck, people are friendly. I love that. Saturday night around 6:30 there was no wait and we got to a table right away. Drinks were good, but the fresh bread they brought out was great! We started with the bone marrow appetizer, we liked it. It could have used a bit more seasoning and would have greatly benefited from a lemon wedge to balance the richness. I ordered the New York strip with Jack Daniels peppercorn sauce, and this is where the real problems started. The steak was way overcooked and under seasoned. The sauce had almost no flavor at all. The chewy peppercorns were the most entertaining part of the whole dish. I had planned to just eat it and not make a fuss; however, our server noticed the steak was overdone and offered to get me a new one. I said sure, thanks. No more than five minutes he pops back with a new steak. He told us that this one was ready but the other order was waiting on their pasta so they would fire a new one for the other table. I cut into the new one and it was more overdone than the first one. Now we have a bit of a situation and I felt somehow it was my place to solve it. I agreed to eat the new bad steak, so the other table could get one and we were both not having dinner. Quite the kerfuffle, when I had intended to just eat the first steak. When it was all said and done, I ate about half the new steak and a quarter of the first one, so it is not like I went hungry. The server came back and explained they were having some technical issues with kitchen thermometers and that he was going to take some of the price of the steak off our ticket. I feel this was a mistake. A gift card to give them another try or comping the whole steak would have been more appropriate. In all fairness though, the broken thermometer was not at fault for flavorless sauce, or the in seasoned steak.

The ambiance is that of a traditional upscale restaurant, with (most) patrons dressing in their Sunday best. Our kids enjoyed their food off the kids menu. We ordered a lobster bisque, Caesar salad, and crab cakes for starters. The lobster bisque was very, very bland--even for me! And I never add salt to anything, not even to most of my cooking lol! My husband was dousing it constantly. Unfortunately, even with all the added salt, it was tasteless. The crab cakes were ok, and the Caesar salad was standard. I ordered the pecan-crusted walleye for myself--it seemed a bit overcooked and I ended up eating only half. We tried chocolate cake for dessert and it was also just ok, a bit dry and also bland, surprisingly. I hate to give this place a lower rating because it's hard enough as it is to come by a fanciful restaurant in such a small town. They're trying, but need to step it up in the taste & preparation department.

We were greeted right away as there was no one else in the restaurant. Its an open floor plan with two rooms. Im guessing its quite lively in the evenings. We shared the chopped salad and the Daisy pizza. The salad was good, though not a traditional chopped salad--it used that trendy wild greens mix that so many restaurants are leaning on these days. Personally, I'm not a huge fan, but the menu did specify it, so that one's on me for not paying closer attention. The pizza, however, was absolutely terrific. The crust was soft and chewy with just the right amount of char from the stone oven. The combination of the sauce, cheese, and fresh basil was spot on. They also drizzle a flavored oil over the top--we couldn't quite pinpoint what it was, but it added an extra layer of flavor that really elevated the pizza. We devoured the whole thing--three slices each! At around $20, the pizza might feel a bit pricey, but it's clear that everything is fresh and made from scratch, so it's well worth it. Service was attentive, though we were the only ones there at lunchtime. I imagine this place really comes alive in the evening. I'd definitely come back to try more of the menu--and next time, I'm not sharing my pizza.
