It's been a while since I last reviewed ButterScotch LBC, I think my last review was in 2020. So I'm long over due for an update. I've still been coming in to the shop about 2 to 5 times a year on average since about 2018. In fact I own all but 1 of their motel anniversary key chains at this point. I still think it's a great store, and Tommy's aesthetic and eye for detail (on the decor and hand-picked items, and colabs) is far above any other men's moto-centric fashion retailers out there. That's what makes this update hard; the main issue I currently encounter with the shop is on the customer service side. I'm likely a bit bias here as I've worked on the service side with multi-billion dollar companies for a couple of decades now and have high expectations, which I even put on myself but I don't believe they're at all unreasonable, considering the cost of the items that are sold at the shop. I'll start with a few months ago; I reached out to the ButterScotch LBC instagram account via DM (which I've done in the past without issue) and ask if they'll be stocking a new item (gloves) from a retailer which I know they've sold in the past/currently, someone reads my message (confirmed via instagram 'read/seen' verifiction) but I get zero response back from them to confirm/deny if they'll be having said item in stock...Fine, no biggie maybe someone forgot to reply, I count it as a miss on there end. Fast forward to today, I stop by at the shop at 1:10PM after about a 40-mile group ride with friends, and I was excited to introduce my riding buddies to the shop. After circling for parking (which is pretty difficult btw) I see the lights all off in the shop and the bars on the front door. Odd because I checked the site and instagram profile, and it says they are open from 1p-5p on Sundays. I also checked the stories to make sure I didn't miss any news updates about closure today, and nada. My assumption is Tommy or one of his workers is running behind on opening the shop. Not a biggie we continue the ride with my friends to BA Moto to meet up for an event and I tell them not to worry I'll DM the shop and see if maybe they're just opening later today. I messaged the shop 20 minutes later and ask if they'd be open later instead or at all today so we could swing by on the way back from our ride, and once again the message is shown as 'read/seen' but no sign of life nor response. So I had to tell my friends that I'm assuming the stores closed for the day, and we can't stop by, total missed opportunity for some new customers. So here's my dilemma, in the past I've corresponded with Tommy directly via instagram DM with zero issues, now I'm not getting any response and I'm not sure if it's because they don't like to use instagram messaging as a means of communication now if they simply don't want my buisness any more (if that's the case it's totally fine) it's just a really odd customer service experience regardless. At this point, I'd give the unqiue clothing/items a 4 out of 5, the shop decor a 4 out of ,5 and then customer service a 2 out of 5 so they land currently at a 3 out of 5 overall for me at the moment. For what it's worth, I do hope to update this to a better review at some point if the situation can ever be clarified for me. read more

I've had my jeans hemmed here twice now and quality of the work is as good as you'll find from the factory. After my last visit, my brother brought up repairs and was told that they were looking to offer it. Well I'm here to tell you that glorious day has arrived! Can't comment on speed/turnaround time as it's still new so not that many jeans were in the repair queue but either way, quality can't be rushed. I needed a crotch repair and a cuff repair, price is on par with other places I've been to without the longer drive or mailing it in so the convenience is where it's at. Even though I believe they'll be offering a mail in repair so fear not non socal residents. I don't really have a preferred method on denim repair, they sort of just do the job and it's what is necessary to keep the jeans going but I was pleasantly surprised with the method Butterscotch used. The reinforced backing is a soft felt like material so it won't create a pressure point. The pressure points just causes a tear as soon as the stitching stops so it creates a vicious cycle of repairing the repair -_- I'm super stoked with the work I got and have no doubt it will hold up for years! When I come back for my next repair job, it will be because of another tear that develops, it certainly won't be because of the quality of this job. Thanks again Butterscotch! read more

Talked to him about the style I was looking for and he picked out a pair that would work for me. I'm still breaking them in but have so far only gotten compliments on the jeans. I've bought from Butterscotch before and already wanted to like the store. The store has a unique and varied selection of clothes, and their prices aren't any more expensive than other places in the US. So why is this a 1 star review? It's 100% because of Tommy, the business owner. tldr; I was polite when I walked in the store, felt unwelcome by his question--then when I tried giving him constructive feedback, he didn't listen. During my last visit, I wanted to try on Vanson leather jackets in-person to see how they actually fit vs. only comparing measurements online. I went in, and Tommy was talking to someone that seemed important, so I didn't want to bother him. He actually offered to help though, and to be polite, I asked him first if I could try on one of the jackets, and he said yes. I took a few minutes to look at the details, then tried some jackets on. I found my size, took a mirror selfie, then zipped it up and put it back nicer than I had found it on the wall. I also took a picture of the size tag, so I could look back at both pictures for later reference. Tommy then asked me, "Any reason why you took a picture of that jacket?" Felt weird, felt accusatory, but I said I was getting a picture to see how it fits. In my head, maybe he thought I was trying to steal this design, because it was one that he had worked on with Vanson to produce, so I said "I'm not trying to steal your stuff." I told him what my actual job was, he pointed finger guns at me, and we both laughed awkwardly--like a bad first date! Shortly after, I told him thanks, take care, and then left. When I got home, I decided to message him privately and give him honest feedback, because a good business owner would be receptive to constructive criticism, right? Surely, they would be mature and not try to publicly shame a customer because of 'improper etiquette', right? Well, I messaged him the following (screenshot below): "Hey Tommy, my name is Ben. I was in the shop earlier to check out the Vanson commando. I understand you're worried about people stealing designs, but the way you asked me why I took a picture of the jacket made me feel unwelcome and judged. Wanted to let you know, you can take it or leave it." Maybe it was a sign from God himself telling me to take up religion, because clearly I misplaced my faith in Tommy. He screenshotted my private message, put it on his public story for everyone to see, and wrote the caption: "Ask any shop owner or any higher end store, if you walk into a store and start taking photos of product they will ask you to either leave and/or delete it. It is not OK to take photos of products in shops without permission. I will stand behind that. Don't be like this guy, try to shame me after you got called out and questioned. F*ck no." He even went out of his way to tag my instagram handle on the actual story--what kind of petty man-child does that? Maybe he just get kicks from publicly shaming the town idiot for poor manners. But in all seriousness, this attitude loses a lot of dedicated customers (returning or prospective) from going out of their way to Long Beach to see the store. I walked into Butterscotch looking for a pair of N&F denim and the guys working were knowledgeable and helpful in finding me a pair. I appreciate having a physical storefront around since sizing raw denim can be a mess. We love shopping here and supporting this small business. The owner is pretty cool, the last time we stopped in it was to return a birthday gift, we somehow managed to get dog hair on the black sweatshirt (we still feel terrible) he was annoyed just like he should be but he got his sticky roller out, removed the hair and took it back. I can't imagine what he deals with on a daily basis coming in and out of that store but I really appreciate him working with us. Also they have a rad collection of clothes you can't find many places, and overall just like the vibe they have going on there. Tommy went above and beyond to answer my questions about selvage denim - humoring my ignorance while pulling all sorts of sizes and fits for me to try on - while also going pretty deep into the current state of the MTO boot industry, which was honestly pretty fascinating (while I tramped around in his various runs of shop-exclusive boots). Basically, as deep as you wanna get, Tommy will oblige, and it's refreshing to actually get 1-on-1 time from the face behind the brand/shop. He also was kind enough to pull a shot of espresso for my wife while she chased our 2 year old around the shop to prevent him from grabbing every beanie and hat in sight - it's those little things that make a big difference. Didn't have our size which is totally understandable but the person that was working here was totally rude and gave attitude anytime we asked to try on a shoe. Never been cursed out by a business, until now. I had ordered a pair of Oak Street Bootmakers collaboration boots online and when they arrived 3 days later, I was sent the oxford version. Basically, a shoe instead of a boot. As I own over 25 pairs of boots, I didn't realize the boot I ordered was very close in configuration to a boot I already have. At this point I figured I could just return the oxfords and cancel the order. Contacted to store by phone and was transferred to someone named Tommy who I assume was the manager. I attempted to explain the situation again as the person I spoke to prior to being transferred didn't seem to have relayed the information accurately. It was at this point that Tommy, already sounding very agitated, proceeded to tell me that I do not need to correct his understanding of the situation. I said yes, I do because you are explaining the difference between the boot I ordered and some other boot when I didn't receive a boot at all. That's when the profanity started. "How is it his fault that I ordered the wrong fucking boot". "I know you didn't revive the fucking boot, I said I would send you a fucking label". I asked him why he was getting so upset over a simple issue but had to get off the phone as he was totally unwilling to be respectful and calm about the issue. I never raised my voice, lost my temper, or spoke to them disrespectfully so I really don't know why this individual thought it was appropriate to speak to me in this fashion. I can't begin to explain how unexpected and unprofessional this interaction was. Never again. This operation deserves ZERO stars. read more

I want to love this shop. I like their product, and want to support the business, but I can't anymore. Every time I walk in Tommy the owner is there, and I'm friendly and engaging toward him, unfortunately he is always the opposite. Doesn't even make eye contact, says whatup when you walk in, while looking at his computer or phone, like you walked into his living room and wonder why the f*** you're there. Passive aggressive attitude the whole time you're there. Very too cool for school, and the ego he portrays just makes it's uncomfortable to shop. I want to so bad try to enjoy their product and be a supporter of the shop, but I'm done with the uncomfortableness. I'd been needing a new pair of sneakers for a while and a friend had mentioned how much she loves her PF Flyers. I wanted to support someone local right now during the pandemic and found I could get them here. I've known of the shop for a while now, great place in the neighborhood to pop in for an amazing coffee and he's got a stellar selection for both men AND women. Honestly its been out of my budget to shop here but these shoes were like a steal! I was going to get 2 pair but wasn't sure how they'd fit etc. I lucked out on being able to cruise by and pick up an online order. And maaaannn, these shoes!!!!!! Solid construction and sooo comfortable!! I def have to go back for a second pair. I picked up a few other things: a nice lapel pin, pack of lil graph paper books that are perfect for designing on the go, also a black on black trucker hat to match the shoes! Rode down to LB from Silver Lake to check out some asphalt resistant jeans...what I found was a thoughtfully curated shop with a friendly and helpful owner. Tommy stocks tons of unique and difficult to find denim, leather, tees, and accessories. Also, one of the few who caters to female riders, nice.
