This is one of my favorite bakeries in Atlanta. I discovered it a few years ago when working nearby and try to go every time I'm in the area. I don't really like cakes and cookies, but pound cake is one of my favorite desserts, along with sweet potato pie, so I always go for one or both of those! The sweet potato pie is seasonal though, only available in the fall. I've always experienced good customer service and have never had a bad dessert from there. I was headed to my nail appointment at Bliss when I saw this cute little bakery! I was promptly greeted by the owner, who was so warm and kind. I opted to get a vanilla cupcake and a water bottle, which was about $5. It was so so moist and delicious!! I know gourmet cupcakes are more pricey, so I know the price would be a bit higher than a regular Publix cupcake. I would definitely come back here!! read more

This place is my favorite bakery near Atlanta. I absolutely fell in LOVE with their smiley bars (you have to try them) and also their pineapple upside down mini cake. It is very delicious and well worth your dime! The staff is very friendly and accommodating. The sweet aroma of treats will fill your nostrils from the outside. I regularly visit Buttersweet and Tiffany is definitely my favorite person here. I have an affinity for INCREDIBLE Red Velvet Cupcakes. I have sampled just about every flavor they make here and by far the Red Velvet is my favorite. Key Lime and Chocolate make a respectable strong finish. I have relatives out of town who love the KEY LIME...they rave about the flavor and moistness of the cake. So you've been invited to a dinner party and you offer to bring a dessert. You've exhausted your "stop by Kroger on the way there for a halfway tasty dessert" option and are looking for something a little more special. That's when you need to visit Buttersweet Bakery in Hapeville. I got a small assortment of the most decadent desserts I've ever had, and my friends at the dinner party agreed. I got (1) brownies--absolutely heavenly--very dark, deep chocolate flavor with a hint of coffee; (2) Emma-doodles--named after the owner's daughter--these are like magic cookie bars with coconut and chocolate chips; and (3) fruit tarts which were light and fresh with a wonderful assortment of kiwi, blueberries, orange and strawberries on top. I had the pleasure of talking with the owner Charlita for a few minutes while she carefully prepared my box of goodies. She was very pleasant and made it a point to get to know me, a local patron and Hapeville citizen. I love the decor--a bright and whimsical design with a hint of antique. You know, I went to Buttersweet about 2 or 3 years ago and thought the baked goods were below average. A brownie there was flat out disgusting. But time passes and they still have a cumulative four stars on Yelp - a likely indication that it should be pretty good. So was my first visit just an off day? Or perhaps they Buttersweet originally sucked, but has improved over the years? Well, I can confirm it wasn't just an off day. I went back over the weekend and picked up three items. I think the owner's taste and mine do not align. The desserts here are overly sweet and overly greasy. The reason for their moistness is too much fat - whether it be oil or butter. I realize moistness is a desirable characteristic in most baked goods, but not to the point of leaving behinds gobs of excess. I just think their ratios are off - use less sugar (and more brown) and more flower or less fat. The staff there is extremely friendly and helpful, but that just can't make up for the not-so-great sweets. read more

The Key Lime and Red Velvet cupcakes are so, so good!!! I remember the raspberry cake she made for me...I can still taste it. My daughter love the brownies and whenever my niece is in town from Mississippi, she always go by the bakery and take goodies home with her. I have really enjoyed this bakery over the past 2-3 years. The owner is usually there and will come out to speak with you, if she isn't already the person taking your order. I have had several items from this bakery. My favorites are the Chocolate Chip, Peanut Butter and Oatmeal cookies. I also love the Chocolate cake and I tried either a Red Velvet or Strawberry cake. I think Red Velvet but it's been a couple of years. I also really like the Brownies as well.....So far everything has been fresh, moist and delicious! Grabbed a pecan tart and a brownie after getting my Thai next door (one for now, one for later was the plan). The mini pecan pie was great - sweet and rich and real. The brownie was insanely good. I wish I had gotten more, but lucky I didn't. The shop was neat and clean and you can see right back into the kitchen that looked the same. Small case with a good selection of treats and some drinks. I love the Buttersweet Bakery staff in downtown Hapeville. They're all VERY fun, engaging in the few moments you're there and they're definitely not against selecting a chocolate chip cookie with extra chips when you're tell them you're a C.Chip cookie fiend. Customer service alone is worth 5 stars. Now on to the food. I got a chocolate chip cookie and was so amazed at the presentation of the red velvet cupcakes, I ordered one of those too. The cupcake, before my teeth sank into it, had me salivating. Afterwards, must admit it was just "okay", not quite the deliciousness I was anticipating. The frosting didn't have as much of a cream cheesy tang as I would like, although the cake itself was pretty moist, definite plus! The chocolate chip, I ate much later, and true enough, there was a ton of chocolate chips, but it was a little small, although the price of both weren't terrible, as I walked away paying under 4 bucks. Interior was very clean and intimate, no indoor seating (that I remember) and parking is along the street, which gets a little tough to find a close spot during lunch times. I think Buttersweet is a nice little addition to Hapeville if you have a sweet tooth with a great staff and good dessert. read more
