My first review did not post. Here I go again. My wife got absolutely scammed by Cartez. She went…read morein for a consultation for a perm. Showed the reference photos. He said to grow it out another month and scheduled the perm. She was so excited and he assured her he could achieve what she wanted. Unfortunately, that clearly did not happen. She left and called me in tears too embarrassed to say anything and out $340 for nothing more than a traumatic salon experience. There are no curls whatsoever. The rods used were way too big for her short hair. This is essentially a root lift. Not what she asked for. The cut is shorter and choppier than what she wanted in the back. The rods were all over the place and not in line, causing her hair part to be jagged considering there are no curls to cover it. I called the store and asked to speak with the owner. I keep getting the run around and more excuses I'm not buying. This is unacceptable at any reputable salon which means this clearly isn't one. After several run around calls with the front office coordinator, Cartez graciously offered to fix her hair, but how can we trust him when he couldn't do it the first time and has so many other terrible reviews naming him between here and google. I keep being told Tiffany will call me. That was Thursday. Now it won't be until Tuesday. If I don't hear anything by Tuesday I am coming in person to be dealt with. I'm not being ignored or gaslit. This is wrong, unethical and fucked up to charge someone such an astronomical amount for something they did not ask for and then gaslight them into thinking they know what they are doing. Cartez shamed her for going to a barber shop, rushed because his next client came in, and really took advantage of the pink tax by charging her 88 dollars for a women's cut, while by the looks of other comments a mens is somewhere around 40. Like I said I'm not buying the excuses being told via the middleman, and I don't care to be a Karen when it is warranted. If this isn't resolved I will literally not stop shitting about it online. She listened to my concerns and I didn't feel rushed . I expressed to Valencia , the concerns of the braider being child friendly and that I could bring my own braiding hair . She stated that bringing my own hair was absolutely acceptable. Since the makeup of her clientele is children ages 3-18, she assured me the staff would be understanding of my nieces needs. She was so nice over the phone and answered all of my questions. It was very simple to book the appointment with a 25.00 deposit to hold her spot . As the appointment time was near I received reminder text messages until the last 30 minutes to the appointment time. If you set an appointment with Kiddos and forget the date and time , it's definitely your fault . The text messages may have been automated possibly, but regardless it will be your fault for sure . There is an open parking lot and it's relatively small but It wasn't difficult to find parking . The shop is located on a one way street. Therefore beware that same way you came will not be the same direction you will leave . Just for your information ( during this time period) the road adjacent to the shop is under construction as well . I can imagine that causing frustration on a busy time of day . Thankfully , appointment wasn't on a very busy day . When I arrived , there were only two clients which were children of course . I don't think I've ever been to a salon where it's child based. The braiders acknowledge our presence when we walked in and advised me to sign in at the front desk upon arrival. The manager informed me that the assigned braider was on her way . Once she arrived she walked right over to us with a smile . She introduced jerked as Alexis and she took my niece to the back for a shampoo . Typically she's afraid to get her hair shampooed but she was calm and excited to get her hair done. Ms. Alexis , was very nice to her and talked to her the way anyone that's experienced with children should . She addressed me as Auntie since I told her I was her aunt . Which was perfect , so that my niece wouldn't address me by my first name , later on. As a content creator I took video of the experience ( no other kids were recorded ) In fact my nieces face wasn't exposed as well. I asked Ms. Alexis if she was ok with being on film . She obliged. It was an over all great experience! Ms. Alexis was so nice and friendly as the other braiders . We all laughed together and told a few jokes . It was all appropriate around children . They made me feel like we'd been attending the salon for years . I fact there were children who had been coming for hair services for years . The children were so cute . I love children and I think it's nice to have a salon catered just for them . It should be a barber shop only for children . When Ms. Alexis finished her hair. It was so beautiful. She had a pretty blue bow in her hair which was free with a hairstyle. She was photo ready for sure ! She smiled and loved her hair . As we left the other braiders assured her she was pretty in her new hairstyle. I thought that was so nice of them . All of the ladies there who were braiding hair that day were so talented . They really knew their stuff! What touched me the most is seeing fathers bringing their daughters in for hair services. Some carried their little princess in their arms . As a society , we don't give fathers their flowers enough. There's some great dads out there. Shout out to the dads who bring their girls to kiddos !! It was so nice to see. I will be bringing my niece back !!

First haircut since I moved here from Brooklyn- my wavy/ curly hair had not been cut since August…read more2023- and the whole experience wildly exceeded my expectations. First of all, Rutabaga salon = John. So, no distractions. Chill environment, John has quiet confidence & is comfortable in his skin, so you are instantly at ease. You can just be yourself. (Not every salon or stylist is like this- sometimes it feels like poser central & it's just exhausting.) We talked about what I wanted, he washed my hair, and cut it- conversation flowed easily, but I also sensed that if I just wanted to be quiet that would have been fine also. But- let's talk about the cut! Layers can go very wrong with my hair, so I have avoided them for 5 years. Length weighs my curls down so that it is wavy. When it is cut: boing! And my curl pattern is irregular. I don't blow it dry. My styling method is: wet my hair. Add non-silicon leave in conditioner (As I Am, Camille Rose, JVN). Maybe a little salt spray or tiny bit of oil once it dries. John, of course, knew this, because he *asked*. Post haircut- I wake up- my hair looks great. My hair looks amazing wet, too. The layers frame my face and don't do anything weird-- you have NO idea how many times that has not been the case. [The last time I had layers it was a "precision" cut and the stylist used some kind of cream full of beeswax that my porous hair sucked up. I looked like I had a wig. And of course that was the week I had my corporate head shot.] So, TL; DR: Reasonably priced, first-rate haircut. Focused, expert stylist who will put you at ease. TWO TIPS: parking for the salon is on E. Howard, so make the turn either right after you cross the railroad tracks or right before- depending on which way you are going. Book in advance!! Unsurprisingly, he stays busy. I booked my March appointment in February- it was well worth the wait, but don't expect to call & get a slot straightaway.

She is very friendly and nice to talk to but I need my hair to match what I paid for and it doesn't. If you ask for a pic, that to me indicates you can look at the pic and reproduce the style. Lastly, within days my hair had the frizzies and it is because she did not put gel on the hair as she has done in the past. I believe that will be my last time going there. For my last visit I give 2 stars because after all the money I paid my hair needs to be redone after just a few days.
