Wonderful experience! My 3 year old hates the clippers. The stylist talked to him through it, kept him distracted from it and praised his efforts to stay calm. There was not even a hint of frustration on her part. Oh, and his hair looks great, too! We will definitely be using them exclusively from now on.

Our family utterly adore Ms. Lisa. She's cut our little guy's hair since he was 2 years old (his wasn't the kind of hair that grew very fast in this early years, haha). She is incredible with kids. All kinds, the quiet ones (those are rare though), the scared ones, the crying and screaming ones, the ticklish ones, and the wiggling ones. My kid moves and giggles a ton. She'll never tell him to stop or to hold still. It's seriously something to marvel. Over the last year, we have been to Ms. Lisa's quite a number of times. Luckily we had seen her right before lockdown and while we were being extremely cautious (and continue to be somewhat conservative in our activities), we had to give in and go mid-May last year when the little dude's hair was getting unwieldy. Which it actually probably couldn't really get but still, it was longer than we'd leave it pre-pandemic. We would go five more times after that and we have an appointment lined up. The one thing our kid misses (as I'm sure other kiddos do too) is being able to go in the play room and just play. He'd play before as he waited for it to be his turn and he'd make us stay until we dragged him out afterwards too. One day we'll be back to that. Until then, we are just so thankful for Ms. Lisa and her wonderful gift with kids and their hair.

We just got back from the little one's haircut - and it was a great first experience. The whole thing didn't take longer than 20 minutes. Lisa was patient and playful with her tiny customer who was intent on not staying still. Though she had back-to-back appointments, she didn't act like she had to hurry through to make it to the next. Love that the hair is off the little one's eyes and ears (for the time being). Look forward to going back! Facilities: There's a changing table in one corner for babies, some picture books, and a toy room for slightly older children. There's a ramp at the entrance, so it's easy to use a stroller. Parking: We were lucky to find parking on the street right outside the salon. There's also a parking lot ($5) right next to it. Free WiFi: If you ask at the desk, they'll help you connect to the WiFi there should you need it.

My son normally gets his hair cut by my mother-in-law. We save money, that's true, but I never know how it's going to turn out. She's been in the hospital for the past few months so when his hair started to cover his ears, I knew it was time to find a kids specialty salon as my son is quite the squirmy worm. This was his very first trip to a hair cut place so I wanted his experience to be a positive one. I've read rave reviews in Yelp and on my neighborhood group's site and this salon is about 15 minutes away so I booked an appointment online for Saturday morning in the same week. On the way there I got lost and called the salon in which I ended up leaving a voicemail. I quickly received a callback from Ms. Lisa who gave me directions and personally stood outside until I was able to find her. So the thing is, it's a little tricky to find because the entrance is next to a bank drive thru (door is to the left of the drive thru). You will turn right (after the Decatur Welcome center) and enter a parking area but instead of turning right to park, you turn left directly behind the building and there are 30-minute parking spots. I believe the haircut took only 15 minutes of my time so not having to pay for parking in downtown Decatur is a plus! I was flustered since I was running a few minutes behind schedule, but Ms. Faith was very friendly. We put my son in the Lightening McQueen car and he focused in on the Paw Patrol episode running on the tv right away. I was convinced. They know kids! Ms. Faith started cutting my son's hair right away and was done in a matter of minutes like it was nothing. My son hardly moved and I didn't hear the crying and screaming that I was anticipating. After the haircut, he chose his flavor of lollipop. Overall, a very positive experience for both him and myself! Based on the reviews, I brought my checkbook with me because I thought they only accepted cash/checks. They seemed to have upgraded since that review from a few years ago and I was able to use my credit card to pay along with adding a tip on a touchscreen monitor - pretty advanced pay system. I also received an email copy of my receipt through Square. Will definitely visit again in time for Fall school pictures! I'm confirming other reviews - yes, this kids hair salon is the real deal!

John understands my quirky gray curly/wavy hair. I feel fun and fresh after his cut.read more

First haircut since I moved here from Brooklyn- my wavy/ curly hair had not been cut since August…read more2023- and the whole experience wildly exceeded my expectations. First of all, Rutabaga salon = John. So, no distractions. Chill environment, John has quiet confidence & is comfortable in his skin, so you are instantly at ease. You can just be yourself. (Not every salon or stylist is like this- sometimes it feels like poser central & it's just exhausting.) We talked about what I wanted, he washed my hair, and cut it- conversation flowed easily, but I also sensed that if I just wanted to be quiet that would have been fine also. But- let's talk about the cut! Layers can go very wrong with my hair, so I have avoided them for 5 years. Length weighs my curls down so that it is wavy. When it is cut: boing! And my curl pattern is irregular. I don't blow it dry. My styling method is: wet my hair. Add non-silicon leave in conditioner (As I Am, Camille Rose, JVN). Maybe a little salt spray or tiny bit of oil once it dries. John, of course, knew this, because he *asked*. Post haircut- I wake up- my hair looks great. My hair looks amazing wet, too. The layers frame my face and don't do anything weird-- you have NO idea how many times that has not been the case. [The last time I had layers it was a "precision" cut and the stylist used some kind of cream full of beeswax that my porous hair sucked up. I looked like I had a wig. And of course that was the week I had my corporate head shot.] So, TL; DR: Reasonably priced, first-rate haircut. Focused, expert stylist who will put you at ease. TWO TIPS: parking for the salon is on E. Howard, so make the turn either right after you cross the railroad tracks or right before- depending on which way you are going. Book in advance!! Unsurprisingly, he stays busy. I booked my March appointment in February- it was well worth the wait, but don't expect to call & get a slot straightaway.

My first review did not post. Here I go again. My wife got absolutely scammed by Cartez. She went…read morein for a consultation for a perm. Showed the reference photos. He said to grow it out another month and scheduled the perm. She was so excited and he assured her he could achieve what she wanted. Unfortunately, that clearly did not happen. She left and called me in tears too embarrassed to say anything and out $340 for nothing more than a traumatic salon experience. There are no curls whatsoever. The rods used were way too big for her short hair. This is essentially a root lift. Not what she asked for. The cut is shorter and choppier than what she wanted in the back. The rods were all over the place and not in line, causing her hair part to be jagged considering there are no curls to cover it. I called the store and asked to speak with the owner. I keep getting the run around and more excuses I'm not buying. This is unacceptable at any reputable salon which means this clearly isn't one. After several run around calls with the front office coordinator, Cartez graciously offered to fix her hair, but how can we trust him when he couldn't do it the first time and has so many other terrible reviews naming him between here and google. I keep being told Tiffany will call me. That was Thursday. Now it won't be until Tuesday. If I don't hear anything by Tuesday I am coming in person to be dealt with. I'm not being ignored or gaslit. This is wrong, unethical and fucked up to charge someone such an astronomical amount for something they did not ask for and then gaslight them into thinking they know what they are doing. Cartez shamed her for going to a barber shop, rushed because his next client came in, and really took advantage of the pink tax by charging her 88 dollars for a women's cut, while by the looks of other comments a mens is somewhere around 40. Like I said I'm not buying the excuses being told via the middleman, and I don't care to be a Karen when it is warranted. If this isn't resolved I will literally not stop shitting about it online. Tiffany, call me please.
