    Before Trim - Back
    Jav W.

I went to the Griyn Thumb a month ago to get a trim and cornrows from Narada... to say he saved my hair is an understatement. I waited a month because I wanted to give a in-depth review. If you're like me, you've had horrible experiences at a salon that caused you to be afraid of going to them. I went to a salon 10 years ago for a detangling and left with matted locs. So I joined YouTube academy and taught myself how to do my hair... only problem is my hair never grew. I was always afraid to touch my ends cause the breakage I would see in the sink would give me a heart attack. My ends always seemed see through. Styles would never last longer than a day. I never knew what my hair felt like moisturized or what healthy hair even looked like besides what people like Naptural85 and Taryn Guy would show. I would get trims from stylist and still see the same problems. It wasnt until I met Narada that all that changed. The salon was extremely comfortable because the only people in there were the clients who were actually being served. They made me send a picture of my hair beforehand so that I could get an accurate pricing before stepping through the door. Narada answered all my annoying questions about my hair without any kind of attitude throughout my service. The process was so peaceful, I actually fell asleep MULTIPLE times. He showed me that the reason my hair never grew was because all the other stylists I went to missed about 6 inches of damage/split ends/breakage throughout my hair due to it's density. He offered to cut it off little by little, but I trusted him so much, I had no problem telling him to chop it all off then and there. He then gave me the slickest cornrows I have ever received. My family was shocked. Even my cat couldn't get enough. He even went beyond the call of duty to answer any questions I had AFTER the service for product recommendations and styling tips. Before him, my hair would get dry and need remoisturizing every 2-3 days. I am currently on day 9 of a twistout. I would have horrible dandruff by the end of the week, but by switching to products he recommended, I dont see hardly any flakes today which is SHOCKING to me. My hair has a sheen and luster that it never had before. Guys in the gym keep asking me what I'm using. I hardly see any breakage in my comb and paddle brush when detangling and my ends look so healthy and thick. I wish I went to him years ago cause then I would be waist length by now, without a doubt. I am telling you... go to this salon. If not for anything else, just a consultation and a simple style like a two strand twists. You will see that both Narada and Henny are masters in this field who deserve a lot more recognition. They made me love my hair again and opened my eyes to things I never thought it could do and I know they will do the same for you.

So...I almost don't want to write this review because I don't want to wait even longer for my hair appointments but it's time to laud the woman (Henny). Can we talk about this hairline? I have a rather fragile hairline and I'm always concerned about styles that might put tension on my edges. Henny listened and braided the crochet hair into the cornrows along the perimeter of my hairline. Not only is it significantly less tension on my edges but it also results in hair that falls far more naturally around my face than if she just crocheted the edges. In the picture I was supposed to be at Walmart buying a bigger bonnet but was too busy in the mirror. In my earlier review I mentioned that some stylist specialize and others are masters of all. Based on her IG, I thought Henny might be a braiding/cornrow specialist, but this hair has me thinking she might be a master...

The person running this shop is completely unprofessional! How do you get poor service before you even walk through the door? I called to ask a simple question...what services do you offer? When I asked my basic question the woman abruptly said I will text you information about booking and hung up. I barely could say thanks and goodbye. It was a sign. The text asked for a pic of my hair in an Afro, a pic of the service I want, and it explained about their hair extension policy for kids. It also said, "if your question requires a detailed response, that is considered a consultation!" This was a horrible first response text with a lot of exclamation points!!!! So I asked the question again. The next text response was "Our work can be found on google as well as most IG, Facebook, and YouTube" I explained Google is how I found them and I didn't see a list of services or a website. The response was "we don't need a website our services are on Google" and I was dismissed, with the same response she gave other reviewers..."I hope you find what you're looking for we are not for you!" Huh? Those are reviews and photos and there's not even info in the About section on Google. It was a basic question. I had time so I begged to differ and explained that a website is needed in 2023! As a digital marketing professional it's clear their digital presence is weak, but I don't judge as long I get the information I need which is why I called in the first place. The screenshot I uploaded is the text response she gave me when I said I was going to give her a poor review, which could've easily been avoided. As you can see without a real conversation the person threatened to post my number online (my number is public so who cares) and she/he proceeded to call me crazy. I was hoping to have a teaching moment to help a black business thrive in the future, but ignorance is tough to get through.

    Before and After

Good morning, everyone. I got my haircut by Henny. I told her that I wanted a big chop and I knew that The Griyn Thumb was the place for me to go. Henny is so sweet, personable, and uplifting. Even though I told her I wanted to chop my hair off, she still made sure that I was comfortable and informed about everything she was doing. I have been suffering from depression and that I saw this haircut as a new start for me. She gave me exactly what I wanted. Or, as the young kids say, she understood the assignment lol

THIS IS A ZERO STAR! YELP MADE ME GIVE 1 STAR!!I don't think it could get any worse. I'm reviewing as I sit under the dryer for the second time. My hair is natural. I came in and asked for a set on perm rods because I wanted a straighter look. Henny was my stylist. She told me she had been doing hair for over 20 years. Henny told me she could give me the look I wanted with a coil set. She told me the price $80 but it would cost an extra $20 to take the coils apart. The total would be $100. Needless to say she was dead wrong. The end result was nothing short of ridiculous. When I told her I didn't like it, her response was what do you want me to do? Really? Do I have to ask? I asked the stylist in the next chair for his opinion. While he tried to give his opinion, Henny kept trying to describe my hair. "Oh it's short on the side, etc. " it's a tapered cut duh! Fast forward, there was no salvaging this style. The stylist next to her apologized and gave me a 2 strand twist to send me on my way. Didn't even offer me to sit under the dryer. Mind you it's 38 degrees outside. But still charged full price. I had to ask to sit under the dryer. Don't you just hate when a stylist mess up your hair and try to move on as if you're not there. A waste of $ and time. This wasn't even worth the gas to drive to the salon. #dontspendyour$here0stars# I only feel it is fair to provide an update. Woke up the next morning to take the twists done by the gentleman out. They were very nice. He was able to salvage a disastrous hair do. Needless to say. I called back to thank him. He was very apologetic and professional in my opinion. Thanks Mr. Hayes!#thenextbestthingfornaturals# #donotsitinherchair#

Awesome behind service! Don't forget to follow them from Instagram! My style is called "yarn twists" love them. They do not hurt at all! I have a big head so it is a lot of hair and fullness. This place has a real chillaxed atmosphere. Henny, Narada, and Shaday are all humble professional educational people they will tell you what's going on with your hair and hair health. I got purple twists in the front and black in the back. Shoulder length love it! I recommend everybody come here, for all hair services! Color, yarn, cuts, trims, hair education, they do it all. Yes, relaxers too. I had Shaday and Narada both worked on my twists the same time. Henny styled and completed my look. Took 5hours, like I said I have a beautiful big head full of hair! Please give them a try God bless! Ooooo and the only reason I found this lovely establishment is because of AfrikanHairGod, on YouTube and they have a vast portfolio on IG. I reside in Gwinnett, the drive wasn't bad at all to Decatur.

    Love it!!!!

I am addicted to this salon! It is the only salon I will go to. I have been four times now and each time I go the service has been excellent. All the stylists are very knowledgeable about natural hair and how to take care of it. They know how to take great care of your hair. My hair has grown since I have been growing there. I recommend this salon to any natural in Atlanta.

John understands my quirky gray curly/wavy hair. I feel fun and fresh after his cut.read more

First haircut since I moved here from Brooklyn- my wavy/ curly hair had not been cut since August…read more2023- and the whole experience wildly exceeded my expectations. First of all, Rutabaga salon = John. So, no distractions. Chill environment, John has quiet confidence & is comfortable in his skin, so you are instantly at ease. You can just be yourself. (Not every salon or stylist is like this- sometimes it feels like poser central & it's just exhausting.) We talked about what I wanted, he washed my hair, and cut it- conversation flowed easily, but I also sensed that if I just wanted to be quiet that would have been fine also. But- let's talk about the cut! Layers can go very wrong with my hair, so I have avoided them for 5 years. Length weighs my curls down so that it is wavy. When it is cut: boing! And my curl pattern is irregular. I don't blow it dry. My styling method is: wet my hair. Add non-silicon leave in conditioner (As I Am, Camille Rose, JVN). Maybe a little salt spray or tiny bit of oil once it dries. John, of course, knew this, because he *asked*. Post haircut- I wake up- my hair looks great. My hair looks amazing wet, too. The layers frame my face and don't do anything weird-- you have NO idea how many times that has not been the case. [The last time I had layers it was a "precision" cut and the stylist used some kind of cream full of beeswax that my porous hair sucked up. I looked like I had a wig. And of course that was the week I had my corporate head shot.] So, TL; DR: Reasonably priced, first-rate haircut. Focused, expert stylist who will put you at ease. TWO TIPS: parking for the salon is on E. Howard, so make the turn either right after you cross the railroad tracks or right before- depending on which way you are going. Book in advance!! Unsurprisingly, he stays busy. I booked my March appointment in February- it was well worth the wait, but don't expect to call & get a slot straightaway.

My first review did not post. Here I go again. My wife got absolutely scammed by Cartez. She went…read morein for a consultation for a perm. Showed the reference photos. He said to grow it out another month and scheduled the perm. She was so excited and he assured her he could achieve what she wanted. Unfortunately, that clearly did not happen. She left and called me in tears too embarrassed to say anything and out $340 for nothing more than a traumatic salon experience. There are no curls whatsoever. The rods used were way too big for her short hair. This is essentially a root lift. Not what she asked for. The cut is shorter and choppier than what she wanted in the back. The rods were all over the place and not in line, causing her hair part to be jagged considering there are no curls to cover it. I called the store and asked to speak with the owner. I keep getting the run around and more excuses I'm not buying. This is unacceptable at any reputable salon which means this clearly isn't one. After several run around calls with the front office coordinator, Cartez graciously offered to fix her hair, but how can we trust him when he couldn't do it the first time and has so many other terrible reviews naming him between here and google. I keep being told Tiffany will call me. That was Thursday. Now it won't be until Tuesday. If I don't hear anything by Tuesday I am coming in person to be dealt with. I'm not being ignored or gaslit. This is wrong, unethical and fucked up to charge someone such an astronomical amount for something they did not ask for and then gaslight them into thinking they know what they are doing. Cartez shamed her for going to a barber shop, rushed because his next client came in, and really took advantage of the pink tax by charging her 88 dollars for a women's cut, while by the looks of other comments a mens is somewhere around 40. Like I said I'm not buying the excuses being told via the middleman, and I don't care to be a Karen when it is warranted. If this isn't resolved I will literally not stop shitting about it online. Tiffany, call me please.
