Hubby and I drove 6+ hours from Florida to be serviced by Narada and I'm over the moon pleased with his service. It was worth the dive and time. He and Henni made us feel very comfortable, like we were family. I've been natural since about 2009ish and love my silvers. For the most part wearing wigs or getting the occasional silk press. Very rarely would I wear my natural hair out in its 'kinky' state. In October 2023 did a big chop basically as a no hassle way of dealing with a surgery at that time. That was the last time my hair was serviced by a professional stylist. A had long ago given up using hair grease until a friend recommended I try Doo Grow. I was skeptical and began my search for a natural stylist who matched what I wanted for my hair. My criteria was a stylist who supported a simple routine that focused on low manipulation and back to basics healthy hair routine. I found an IG influencer who recommended the AfirkanHairGod as one who promoted a simple routine of water and hair grease as a moisturizing routine. The more I binge watched his videos, the more I knew that this was who I was looking for. His philosophy matched my ideal of what I was looking for. So I started following his recommendations of detangling, grease and other techniques he recommended and found they worked well for my hair. Case in point was that I had very crunchy ends that I thought would need to be cut off. Much to my surprise, at my consultation, I was informed that he only needed to trim very little. Apparently following his recommendations was already working and I was released to a one year follow-up unless I needed to come back earlier. So that solidified in my mind that he is genuinely interested in the health of your hair. He is not cut happy. He cuts when needed for damage, and then he gives you a choice of how you want to proceed to correct your damage. He is very kind, patient and answers all your questions. I've seen videos of his customers who come in with damaged hair and end up with flourishing healthy natural hair under his care and tutelage. Elder speaking so listen and take these words from a wise one. DO NOT LET HENNI/HENNY DO YOUR HAIR. ASK FOR ONE OF THE OTHER STYLISTS. I'm gonna attach a picture of their stated policy which they didn't even honor. They strictly tell you to send a picture of your hair, send a picture of the style you want and the day/time you want. They also explicitly state that all new clients receive a consultation. I had to submit a $100.00 deposit to secure my appointment. The 3 hour service cost $375.00 including the deposit. I was about to leave a positive review about my hair and the fact there wasn't any wait times. Then I saw reviews about consultations and educating the client on their hair. I received no such service. I looked at their policy to make sure I hadn't misinterpreted anything and there it was plain as day. Reached out to Henny/Henni about this and she back peddled on their stated policy outlined in the text message and tried to gaslight me about it. She eventually got defensive and ended our discussion. Let me spare you a headache...... Once you have your appointment. Ask for the name of the stylist who will be doing your hair. If it's Henny/Henni, immediately request another stylist in the salon. If you can't get another stylist then cancel the appointment. Look at the reviews. Most all the positive reviews are about the other stylists at the salon and most all the negative reviews are about Henny/Henni. Had Henni honored her salon policy and not gaslit me, she would've had myself and about 20 plus new clients from me alone. I run a small business and I network on a constant basis. I've been to this salon twice now, all the way from Boston. I'm just gonna go ahead and say that Narada is the best stylist I've found in my 41 years-- he's undisputedly the best for natural hair in the US. Yeah I said it! He's the ONLY stylist I've seen assess hair for damage, section by section. I haven't seen anyone else do this (White stylists, Black stylists, or other) and I've consumed A LOT of hair content on YouTube, IG, and TikTok. I'd been watching his YouTube for years and finally decided to book an appt when I knew I'd be visiting ATL.. My first appt was this past Feb and Narada was warm & friendly, ON TIME, and took his time with my hair. I've literally never been to a stylist that only worked on MY hair and my hair only--not juggling me w/ other clients, which is VERY unsanitary btw! & You can tell that he just really cares about his craft. I learned that my hair was very damaged, brittle, and even discolored!--mainly from the Curly Cut fiasco (you can research the era of Black Girl Curls on your own.. ) and also b/c of hard water (although I was using a shower filter, I wasn't changing it out as often as I should.) He kindly answered all of my silly questions; even when I mentioned that I was ready to big chop as I have many times before, he said that he can give me a cut that will manage the damage for now. Then proceeded to give me instructions to cut an inch every 4 mos. until I come back to see him, which I followed. Fast forward 8 mos. for my appt w/ him last wknd, and my hair has been looking and feeling so much better ever since! l planned a solo trip for my Bday in ATL (& for the Brandy & Monica concert) and knew I had to take advantage of my time there to see Narada again. & I honestly think that getting your hair done w/ a guru like him is truly treating yourself. Now I'll warn you, he IS pricey, however I would advise anyone to get their coins in order to go see him. He will change the trajectory of your hair. At this 2nd appt, he said my hair is now "smooth as butter" and said that whatever I had been doing is working and I'm so happy b/c I was a bit nervous on what the update would be, considering all that damage just 8 mos. ago! He only ended up trimming about 1-2" at the most. And I'm now realizing that just like he said in my 1st appt, there was no need to chop it all off and go bald! He truly has a method and plan that can take you from damaged, brittle & breakage to healthy, lustrous & thriving in less than a year You just have to do the simple things he instructs you to! I went to the Griyn Thumb a month ago to get a trim and cornrows from Narada... to say he saved my hair is an understatement. I waited a month because I wanted to give a in-depth review. If you're like me, you've had horrible experiences at a salon that caused you to be afraid of going to them. I went to a salon 10 years ago for a detangling and left with matted locs. So I joined YouTube academy and taught myself how to do my hair... only problem is my hair never grew. I was always afraid to touch my ends cause the breakage I would see in the sink would give me a heart attack. My ends always seemed see through. Styles would never last longer than a day. I never knew what my hair felt like moisturized or what healthy hair even looked like besides what people like Naptural85 and Taryn Guy would show. I would get trims from stylist and still see the same problems. It wasnt until I met Narada that all that changed. The salon was extremely comfortable because the only people in there were the clients who were actually being served. They made me send a picture of my hair beforehand so that I could get an accurate pricing before stepping through the door. Narada answered all my annoying questions about my hair without any kind of attitude throughout my service. The process was so peaceful, I actually fell asleep MULTIPLE times. He showed me that the reason my hair never grew was because all the other stylists I went to missed about 6 inches of damage/split ends/breakage throughout my hair due to it's density. He offered to cut it off little by little, but I trusted him so much, I had no problem telling him to chop it all off then and there. He then gave me the slickest cornrows I have ever received. My family was shocked. Even my cat couldn't get enough.He even went beyond the call of duty to answer any questions I had AFTER the service for product recommendations and styling tips. Before him, my hair would get dry and need remoisturizing every 2-3 days. I am currently on day 9 of a twistout. I would have horrible dandruff by the end of the week, but by switching to products he recommended, I dont see hardly any flakes today which is SHOCKING to me. My hair has a sheen and luster that it never had before. Guys in the gym keep asking me what I'm using. I hardly see any breakage in my comb and paddle brush when detangling and my ends look so healthy and thick. I wish I went to him years ago cause then I would be waist length by now, without a doubt. I am telling you... go to this salon. If not for anything else, just a consultation and a simple style like a two strand twists. The hairstylist here are really nice friendly and most importantly conscious about everyone's different hair needs. The service may be a little pricey , but is honestly very worth it. Have been a customer here for over two years and my head and hair have never felt better. The amount care they give to your hair is perfect. I'm very tender headed and the places I used to get my locs retwisted were rough and damaged my hair a lot. Here my scalp does not feel any pain. And my locs are feeling healthier and stronger. So...I almost don't want to write this review because I don't want to wait even longer for my hair appointments but it's time to laud the woman (Henny). Can we talk about this hairline? I have a rather fragile hairline and I'm always concerned about styles that might put tension on my edges. Henny listened and braided the crochet hair into the cornrows along the perimeter of my hairline. Not only is it significantly less tension on my edges but it also results in hair that falls far more naturally around my face than if she just crocheted the edges. In the picture I was supposed to be at Walmart buying a bigger bonnet but was too busy in the mirror. In my earlier review I mentioned that some stylist specialize and others are masters of all. @AfrikanHairGod landed on my FYP/TikTok, after watching a few hair videos and listening to him speak on what I had experienced with "curly cuts" I knew I needed to book an appointment. I decided to check them out on Instagram, @thegriynthumb, which just solidified my choice to book an appointment. My experience with curly cuts was awful, spending $$$ on 20 min. cuts, they would trim off 1/2 an inch, snipping here and there leaving my hair with uneven lengths. It felt like an assembly line, no attention to detail and trimming everyone's hair in the same shape. Not everyone wants volume up top, round etc. but it seemed as though that was the standard shape/formula for most curly cut salons. So grateful I was able to book an appointment with The Griynthumb salon as my hair needed a good amount to be cut off. The communication with the salon was easy, quick and clear. The day of my appointment, I arrived and was happy to see that the salon was open and Henny was on time. Henny was respectful and thoroughly examined my hair, communicating what she noticed and what she recommended we do. I trusted her so much so that I caught myself napping in her chair, that's never happened. The salon has such a relaxing atmosphere, no rushing, nothing unexpected. For once I felt comfortable in a salon, no comments for "having too much hair" or encountering a stylist who had no clue what to do with my hair. The process is that EVERY single person has to submit a photo and request a consultation for which a deposit is required. This displays how serious and committed individuals are to their hair and the journey. My hair was evaluated and assessed professionally. She asked me what I want and where do I see my hair going. The person running this shop is completely unprofessional! How do you get poor service before you even walk through the door? I called to ask a simple question...what services do you offer? When I asked my basic question the woman abruptly said I will text you information about booking and hung up. I barely could say thanks and goodbye. It was a sign. The text asked for a pic of my hair in an Afro, a pic of the service I want, and it explained about their hair extension policy for kids. It also said, "if your question requires a detailed response, that is considered a consultation!" This was a horrible first response text with a lot of exclamation points!!!! So I asked the question again. The next text response was "Our work can be found on google as well as most IG, Facebook, and YouTube" I explained Google is how I found them and I didn't see a list of services or a website. The response was "we don't need a website our services are on Google" and I was dismissed, with the same response she gave other reviewers..."I hope you find what you're looking for we are not for you!" Huh? Those are reviews and photos and there's not even info in the About section on Google. It was a basic question. I had time so I begged to differ and explained that a website is needed in 2023! As a digital marketing professional it's clear their digital presence is weak, but I don't judge as long I get the information I need which is why I called in the first place. The screenshot I uploaded is the text response she gave me when I said I was going to give her a poor review, which could've easily been avoided. Narada did my hair and I watch him on youtube alot, so I was def pleased that he was also great in reality. The only thing is that it is expensive to get your hair done, and as a black college student with limited resources and no family wealth I cannot afford to go often, but when I do I will def go here. I payed 50 bucks for a wash cut and blowdry. I have fine strands, med density, type 4 hair, that is always breaking off. I've been coming every two weeks for a year. I never reviewed the salon because I felt like the existing reviews painted an accurate picture. However, after seeing the most recent, I knew I should. The shop is relaxed and both stylists are great. My appts have always started when scheduled and I've never seen either have a bad interaction with someone. I'm impressed each time with the way my hair turns out. In fact, I don't make requests for styles, I let Henny do whatever she feels. For the record, I have short 4c hair. I told her what services I desired and she then told me the prices. Let me back up a min....She has a YouTube video titled: "Why Y'all so expensive", basically ranting on how people call and ask for services and ask the question "why are you so expensive" when she tells them the price and other things that "bother" her when ppl ask about prices. Well, I COMPLETELY UNDERSTAND why ppl ask that question. I was BLOWN away when she quoted me the price, however, I DID decide to go ahead with my appt. and pay the RIDICULOUS price...Yeah I said it!! I arrive at the salon approximately 2-3 mins before 1:30. I walked in and I said hey, b/c I wasn't greeted AT ALL. She(Henney) then says "Ericka", I say "Yes". That's it...no, have a seat Narada will be w/you shortly, NOTHING! So I sit down and wait...not a long wait though. A few mins later, Narada comes in, and I hear Henney say "Ericka is hear". He finishes what he's doing then comes and greets me and tells me to have a seat in his chair...ok, now I'm getting excited. Ok, first off, If I'm going to spend a lot of MY HARD EARNED MONEY, I expect to have decent, professional looking people doing my hair. Now, I'm going to try my best NOT to be mean and insulting. THIS IS A ZERO STAR! YELP MADE ME GIVE 1 STAR!!I don't think it could get any worse. I'm reviewing as I sit under the dryer for the second time. My hair is natural. I came in and asked for a set on perm rods because I wanted a straighter look. Henny was my stylist. She told me she had been doing hair for over 20 years. Henny told me she could give me the look I wanted with a coil set. She told me the price $80 but it would cost an extra $20 to take the coils apart. The total would be $100. Needless to say she was dead wrong. The end result was nothing short of ridiculous. When I told her I didn't like it, her response was what do you want me to do? Really? Do I have to ask? I asked the stylist in the next chair for his opinion. While he tried to give his opinion, Henny kept trying to describe my hair. "Oh it's short on the side,etc. " it's a tapered cut duh! Fast forward, there was no salvaging this style. The stylist next to her apologized and gave me a 2 strand twist to send me on my way. Didn't even offer me to sit under the dryer. Mind you it's 38 degrees outside. But still charged full price. I had to ask to sit under the dryer. Don't you just hate when a stylist mess up your hair and try to move on as if you're not there. A waste of $ and time. This wasn't even worth the gas to drive to the salon. #dontspendyour$here0stars# I only feel it is fair to provide an update. This place has a real chillaxed atmosphere. Henny, Narada, and Shaday are all humble professional educational people they will tell you what's going on with your hair and hair health. I got purple twists in the front and black in the back. Shoulder length love it! I recommend everybody come here, for all hair services! Color, yarn, cuts, trims, hair education, they do it all. My daughter is five and I have never cut her hair before. She has pretty long hair and dislikes whenever I do it. I figured it was time to get professional help. I had some recommendations, but I wanted a place that knew her hair type and would make her feel comfortable. I called and was able to come in for a consultation the same day. I had never been to an all natural hair salon, I had never had a male stylist before either, It was a wonderful experience hands down! I hadn't been to a professional stylist in almost 2 years, The stylist made the experience amazing. I did not have to wait at all as soon as I came in the door I was greeted and sat right in the chair and we got started. He gave me a great consultation, and looked intently at my hair strands. He was so gentle with hair unlike other people I have gone to in the past with my 4C mane. Come to find out I didn't even need a trim he wasn't scissor happy at all. The Prices we very affordable. This is my first ever yelp review as the service was the worst I've ever gotten. First the woman makes me send her a picture of my hair so she could "see what I'm getting myself into". After I immediately took a pic and sent it to her she asked for my hair in its natural state. Never been asked all this before. When I get there there's not even the name in front and the store looked closed and run down. After she complained the whole time that she had to dry my hair because " she doesn't normally dry hair" and she braids hair wet. Never heard of that either. After she charged me a completely different price than what she told me on the phone and when I told her that she told me I could either pay or she will call the police or take out my braids. Then when I decided to just pay she had to record the transaction of me getting giving her my credit card because she said "she has had issues with people in the past. " She had her assistant record with an iPad the transaction and then recordthe front and the back of my card, which I again never had done and will be calling my bank to see if such processes are even permitted/legal. Do not go here! Update: I see the owner has commented to lie and say I tried to leave without paying? How when your locked inside the salon in the first place? I started my appointment with a disclaimer. My previous beautician didn't take the time to look at my curl pattern and instead told me I had heat damage throughout my head. I was about to chop it all off when she suggested a Deva cut. She assured me it was the best way to even out my afro. I decided to visit The Griyn Thumb salon on a friend's recommendation. I was not disappointed. After brushing my hair out, Narada was able to immediately see how uneven my hair had been cut. He was also able to explain the "heat damage". He and the other stylist (I'm so sorry I can't remember your name), showed me the various curl patterns throughout my hair. It was nice to know that my hair was actually healthy. Narada educated me on what products to avoid and what would help with my curl patterns. I recently went to the Griyn Thumb and loved it! I got Marley twists and there was no pain! Usually, when I get my hair braided/twisted I can barely move my head/it takes 2-3 days before the pain subsides. I'm going to try and keep this as short as possible; this place is a gem! For months my best friend raves about how amazing the service here was, of course I wanted to see for myself. I was in town visiting from Florida and decided on a whim to get my hair done. I called and was scheduled for the very next morning. Amazing right? So immediately upon entering the establishment, I greeted by both Narada and Henny. In that very instant, I was comfortable. Now on to the reason you're actually reading this review: I received my services from Narada. As I sat down, I immediately apologized for the work he had ahead of him. He handled hair in a way I've never experienced, I've never had my hair detangled and not experienced some tension or pain. But this was the most painless and thorough detangling ever. Narada is extremely knowledgeable and addressed all of my concerns with my hair. I talked his head off while there, lol but that's how comfortable I was made to feel. Not to mention how beautiful I felt when I left. Narada is truly a remarkable and talented man and I'll willingly travel from Fort Lauderdale to Decatur just for him to do my hair.
