My wife saw the ad for this restaurant online. We liked the outdoor layout of the restaurant. However, we weren't thrilled with it being so close to the road, as it was loud and not great for across the table conversation. We stopped in and ordered La Bestia and Pal Campo. We ordered the Surtido by Cheff's for an appetizer. We enjoyed all of the food! We wanted to make sure we had food native to the island. Server was attentive and made one feel welcomed and very much attended to. However, the food did not meet my expectations. Oh my God, this is an absolute must if you're a foodie. This is an iconic place for Mofongo. I've eaten Mofongo at so many places. And nothing comes close to this. Usually a lot of people shy away from Mofongo because it tends to be a little dry but not here. Mofongo here is moist, non-greasy and still very very tasty. it can be customized with various sauces. I had Mofongo with fish. Dorado. It was $22 but huge portion. I couldn't finish. Came in a really cute bowl. I also had a piña colada to accompany it The staff was so nice. They also have a very short lunch special menu only three items per day and that changes every day. Lunch special, are $10 plus. I need to go there sometime when I'm not busy with meetings. There is no way this place is anywhere close to a 5. If you call yourself the best Mofongo, you better bring it. I ordered a Tri Fongo and it was BAD. The lack in flavor was so disappointing. I had it with Carne Frita which also didn't have any flavor. My mom's mofongo was the same. No spices and bland!!!! My wife said hers was just okay, but lacked flavor. The Fried cheese appetizer was like eating an eraser. I would wish the waitress would pay more attention to serving tables. The restaurant set up was not bad, it had a good patio feeling. We came here on our way to the west coast and it was worth it. First off, it is a roadside stand with fully covered dining, but you are not inside. Also, it looks like you can park on the street right in front of it, but use their private lot, they come by and ticket those parked on the street. Anyhow, we were seated immediately as there were only a few parties there around 2pm when we arrived for lunch. Our server was with us and we went through the menu. The mofongo is what they are known for so of course we got one with 3 meats, which came in a cool goblet. It was a ton of food and we definitely did not finish it since we also got a grouper entree, that was a bit too sauced for my liking. The kids meals all come with ice cram at the end so don't miss out on that. That said, the service was ok and the drinks were really good. Absolutely loved the stuffed mofongo here. The stuffed mofongo came out in piping hot large cups--reminded me of chalices. Ordered the churrasco stuffed mofongo. The steak was juicy, tender, and I loved that the flavor enhanced the mofongo and made it less dry. Other people at my table ordered the El Capitan and the shrimp stuffed mofongo, both of which also were impressive-looking and well enjoyed by the table. Definitely recommend ordering any of these dishes--be prepared for leftovers. Service was decent, and seating was outdoors but was covered. Hidden gem vibes off the highway This spot has a cute, low-key vibe even though it's right off a busy road, it still feels like a find. I'm usually not a mofongo person because it tends to be dry if not made well, but the mofongo at Cheff's is juicy and flavorful. They served the mofongo in a mortar-like bowl so it's absolutely freshly mashed! All the dishes we ordered here were so good. We had ropa vieja rellenas to start which was well made. Best Mofongo in my world! I had the mariscos mofongo with garlic sauce and I ate the entire amount. I couldn't stop eating it. The most balanced mofongo I have ever experienced. Like others have said, every bite is moist and fresh. Yes they cater to locals- but our server was very kind and friendly. The drinks were actually good too! The service was very slow, we were a party of 13. It took a while before anybody came to our table to get our orders. For sure not the PR style mofongo, it was more on the soft side, like it was done boiled. I've had many mofongo's and definitely is not the number one. The ambiance was nice, outside vibes. Like food trucks with under cover seating. I also had a octopus salad, which the flavor was on the bland side, had a lot of vinegar. My husband had the carne frita, which was on bland side as well at least for our taste. The fried cheese with gava, was good- I like my cheese more on the toasted side. It was what I called mongo. This has been our favorite spot to go for good local food. We have always been happy with food wuality and service. Unfortunately, the last two times we went we were dissapointed. Our food took a lot longer than usual and it arrived cold, flavor wasn't the same. I thought it could be an off night or different chef. We tried again and again we were disapointed.
