I really was baffled after trying this place, especially having read all the positive reviews. I got the chicken shawarma pita, which consisted of grilled chicken, a couple slices of tomato, hummus, and maybe a small amount of white sauce? It was really not at all what I was expecting, especially considering the chicken was remarkably dry, bland (I only noticed salt and pepper), and pan-seared/grilled instead of cooked on a spit. This would probably rank among the worst shawarmas I've ever had in DC. My partner got the greek salad with chicken added, which was also not at all to her liking. It had spinach, white onion (why not red??), cherry tomatoes, and minimal feta. It really wasn't a proper greek salad like she was hoping for. On top of all of this, this place was not cheap. The shawarma pita and greek salad with chicken totaled nearly $30. The workers were kind, and the inside had a hole-in-the-wall feel, which I normally expect when going to good greek/mediterranean delis, but the food quality was just so bad. Overall, I was super disappointed with the quality and authenticity of the food and will not be going back to Byblos deli anytime soon. read more

This has to be one of the greatest deli that I have been to in DC. We came here after a potter/painting class and it was across the street. It looks like a small hole in the wall but the food was delicious. I ordered a chicken sub and it was packed of flavor and the service was extremely quick. I've noticed this place in Cleveland Park for decades (?), but I've never been, because Vace is right across the street, and their pizza is hard to resist! We tried Byblos on a Tuesday. Man do I wish we'd gone to Vace instead. The man behind the counter was friendly enough. The shop was tiny and cluttered, I guess they do mainly carry out business. I don't even know how they keep that business because... The food was very bad. I love Mediterranean food! One great thing about this style of cuisine is the fresh flavors! This was not fresh. I am reluctant to use this word but it was actually disgusting. The kofta kabob sandwich was small, which was ok because it seemed to be mushy hamburger helper/ loosemeat/ slop on a very thin pita. The kids' chicken tenders were fried to a deep deep mahogany brown, but the kids ate them. The sampler platter had hummous (ok), baba ghanoush (ok), very thin pita, a few slices of cucumber/onion/tomato (ok), and vegetarian grape leaves (I was not brought up to spit out food at the table but I had to). No feta or olives, which I would expect on this type of platter. Two stars because the man behind the counter gave me two lemon wedges which should have already been on the plate, after I asked. Not sure what happened, but our recent experience with Byblos Deli was not at all what we had remembered it being. The menu is the same, offering pita sandwiches, subs, house special platters, veggie options, and salads. We ordered the Byblos Special, which came with your choice of grilled chicken, kafta, or gyros (I opted for the gyros), which is served with rice, hummus, tzaziki sauce, and a large pita. I also added baba ghanouj and an order of kibbeh. Unfortunately, the gyro was super dry and had an off-taste to it; the rice, which was usually my favorite, seemed to have been sitting out for a while and was also dry. The hummus was gloopy and thin in consistency, as well as the baba gahnouj, and both didn't really add much to the dish. I'm a huge kibbeh fan, but these were also filled with a dried out meat filling, and dipping them into the hummus or the baba ghanouj didn't make it better. There are only a few tables inside to dine in, as most patrons seem to get their orders to go. The food is okay and the price is right, as long as you can get past the horrible attitude of the owner Matt. There is no way to order online, so you have to deal with his shitty attitude and have to wonder if it's worth it. He will berate you if you take too long, if you ask too many questions, if you complain, basically if you open your mouth. And you HAVE to deal with the owner and his berating, he is the only one behind counter. wanted to share some feedback from my recent visit to Byblos with my family for lunch. We were excited to try the food and, after glancing at the menu, we decided on the falafel, grilled chicken, and kofta. However, when the order arrived, we received the grilled chicken special, a kofta pita sandwich, and a falafel sandwich--which was not what we thought we ordered. When I brought this up to the person who appeared to be the owner, I was met with a surprising level of attitude. He responded loudly, saying things like, "If you wanted the special, you should've ordered the special," and "If you wanted pita, you should've ordered pita," continuing in that tone until I had to reassure him repeatedly that "it's okay" just to stop the conversation. I'd like to break this down for clarity: 1. Menu Clarity: I wasn't aware that the same items had multiple options (special vs. pita). That wasn't communicated at the time of ordering, and a quick clarification would've made all the difference. 2. His Response: The statement didn't quite make sense. We received two pita sandwiches and one special, so if we really were supposed to specify, the order clearly reflected both options--just not the ones we intended. 3. Hospitality: In the service industry, it's common practice to clarify orders and guide customers when things are unclear. Unfortunately, that didn't happen here. Despite the miscommunication, we decided to eat what was served. Unfortunately, things didn't improve from there: * The yogurt sauce contained a long hair, which was extremely off-putting. I looked around and noticed the person preparing the food wasn't wearing a hair net. * The grilled chicken tasted reheated--pressed flat on the grill, resulting in it being tough and dry on both sides. * The pita sandwiches were overloaded with garlic sauce, which made them messy and overpowering. * Lastly, the rice served with the meal didn't resemble typical rice and tasted off. Don't be put off by the divey vibe of this place. The gyros and souvlakis are excellent and filling. Succulent meat, not at all dried or crispy like some places. Shared a side of fries, and with drinks, lunch came to under $30. These days, that's a good deal. Worth a stop if you're looking for a no fuss, solid Greek deli. I hadn't been here before but I was close by and looking for a quick lunch. I grabbed a chicken salad to go, and enjoyed it on the patio. It's a small inside with counter service, so I assume they do mostly takeout or quick eating. The chicken was SO yummy! It was super flavorful and grilled, with fresh lettuce, feta and onions. Reviewing after three experiences here: the first was informational, the second was my partner's for food, and the third was mine for food. For the informational visit, I was doing some canvassing for the local Sierra Club, to inform the restaurants of Cleveland Park about the ban on single-use/disposable items with food orders (plastic straws, plastic utensils etc.). Of all the establishments I canvassed, Byblos was the only one that expressed familiarity with the law and demonstrated their compliance. Major kudos for environmental responsibility. The second visit was by my partner, for falafel. He said it was definitely the best he's had in DC, and some of the best he's ever had, period. Finally, my spanakopita order tonight. I haven't had any local spanakopita since moving to DC over a year ago, and honestly can't remember the last time I've had it period. Byblos's is pretty great. A little pricey for the portion, but that's DC prices for you. Definitely filling and delicious. For the people complaining about the oiliness, that's authenticity, I've definitely had homemade spanakopita like that with my family. The richness is all part of the Greek love. I got the spanakopita to go and received it in a plastic clamshell of polypropylene (plastic 5) variety. In DC this plastic is recyclable, but it's also sturdy enough to be reusable, so I'm washing and keeping it- maybe for my next visit to Byblos, which is definitely happening! read more

a friend showed me Byblos and we sat down for some hotdogs. I asked about the espresso and who I assume to be the owner gave me the best cup of espresso I have ever had. Today I switched it up and ordered a cold turkey & cheese sub (w/ provolone) and spinach pie and wasn't disappointed. Have walked passed this restaurant so many times and am so happy to finally eat here. It was amazing. We got grape leaves which came out warm and were delicious. First time visiting this place, went in and just stood there for a few minutes without anyone acknowledging then saw the owner come to the counter and ask "if you have ordered" and I said no thinking he was talking to us and very rudely he said that he was talking to the other people. I said no big deal and moved on, then he asked for here or to go, I said for here and need a table for 2, he then got frustrated and said that this is a self service place which is not a big deal, a clear sign or pleasant communication would suffice but there is none so we were confused that do we just sit down or order and then sit, all the owner has to do was communicate this pleasantly and professionally but clearly he was having a bad day and started talking loud and saying on how was being respectful all while being a complete jerk. I am not even sure how this place is rated 4.3 as it is a complete dump and the owner looked just so unclean that I wouldn't want him even touching my food. We obviously left and went next door. I have been in customer service and retail all my life and this exactly what I preach on how not to treat your customers. It's truly a shame that this even occurred. Please avoid this place there are multiple other nice places on the same block. I hope the owner here can go take some classes on how to be respectful in a business setting because clearly he is clueless. read more

I've had a lot of Mediterranean food in my life being from Los Angeles, so I had this Lebanese/Mediterranean place as just one of many places I've eaten at; I was wrong! The kofta was so soft and flavourful, and on the opposite end, the lentil soup was by and far one of the best soups I've ever tasted! The owner Marc and his crew makes some of the best tasting rice, falafel, and mezze plate I've had in a looooong time! I highly recommended coming here if you live in not only the Cleveland, but in the DMV area! While we were sitting there, many different kinds of people came in from police, secret service, locals, a lot of to-go orders and tourists too!
