What they lack in curb appeal they make up for in taste and quality of ingredients. The fact that this business still hasn't been claimed by the business owner makes me respect it even more. He's busy making these kick ass gyros and probably has no idea how to work a computer, like a true man of Greek culture. I'm pretty sure I was the only person there that was new. The owner (I believe) basically ignored me and my questions about the orzo salad and greeted everyone else in line by name which had me thinking oh ok so it's a small hole in the wall but I'm hungry and love Greek food and it's next to my ENT doctor so I'll order a quick sandwich. Welp, upon the first bite I somehow respect this owner more because, like, STFU you newbie, order the orzo salad or don't and keep moving... this is a place I will be coming to frequently until the grumpy old bloke knows who I am and the most intimate details of my life.

Love love love!! My favorite Greek food in DC and possible anywhere. You get a TON of food for what you pay for. Be ready to order when you get to the front because the owner is a bit intimidating (but secretly a big sweetie). My favorite things are the gyro, the giant lima beans, the avgolemono soup, the greek salad, the stuffed grape leaves, and the orzo. Literally everything here is amazing! Recommend coming before 12 or after 1:30 to avoid the line.

Kostas is still serving up quality homemade Greek food. Visited the deli the day before Thanksgiving and ordered some entrees for the Thanksgiving meal. Had some of the traditional menu items and also tried his mashed potatoes and stuffing special for Thanksgiving. Everything was very good, even the chocolate chip cookies! Kostas starts cooking early in the morning and it shows in the taste of his food. His wife Irene was working at the register that day and is very nice and friendly. You can order using door dash for pickup or delivery or you can walk in and wait in line. Sometimes the line moves slow depending on how big the orders are and because Kostas hand picks each and every items that goes into your order. If you want good home cooked food, please support this small local business that takes pride in what they do.

Unfinished soup and hearty bread. :( Don't think I'm going to finish it.

Came here very excited to try the avgolemono soup as it's typically a very delicious lemony creamy thick soup. Had it for the first time in Colorado and it was AMAZING! I've even homemade it several times and it's nice and slightly tart and a little salty and yum. Cashier slash possibly owner (?) got very excited about his avgolemono soup and even told me that his recipe is online somewhere - perhaps in video form? So imagine my disappointment when I ate this soup and found that there was 0% taste of lemon. Orzo disintegrates in my mouth in a weird way. Quite disappointed and having a hard time finishing even half of this soup as it's very mediocre. :( Maybe they just forgot to add the lemon? Only saving grace here is the friendliness of the guy up front, cuteness of the shop, and the yummy piece of bread it came with. Won't be returning.

The Greek Deli is an institution. The first couple times my co-worker too me there, I thought it was overblown. Then I started noticing that their food, though basic, was very well-prepared and consistent. The olive oil bread was crusty on the outside and on the inside a fresh dense sponge for sopping up flavor. The Greek Combo is enough for a couple meals at least. It comes with a salad--made with iceberg, which I'm not crazy about, but also tomatoes, cucumber, and a lovely tangy vinaigrette. The combo also usually comes with orzo, spanikopita (with crisp filo dough, healthy spinach, and a ton of feta for lots of flavor), a big meatball, and pastitsio (a Greek lasagna). Oh, and the green beans and giant beans in a stewed tomato sauce! After going to the Greek Deli pretty regularly for a while, I remember going to some Greek restaurants elsewhere and being disappointed--for the first time appreciating just how good the Greek Deli is. After leaving the area, the Greek Deli was one of the things I missed the most. It was great to get back there and see Kostas and to re-experience the food. Good as ever!

Still amazing since I last came here 10+ yrs ago when I used to work in the area! Kostas is still serving up the best Greek food in the DC area hands down. Better than Byblos, My Big Fat Greek Deli, etc. Though prices have gone up, he has a note apologizing to customers for that at the front of the store explaining how ingredients cost more and he doesn't want to skimp. Who does that?! Gyros, meatball platters, souvlaki, chicken dishes and soups, literally everything is amazing. I don't even personally like feta cheese but love it here for some reason. Food doesn't taste right without it. That's how you know it's legit. Super highly recommend... back then and even now. Please continue to support places like this!!

I absolutely LOVE this place, high-quality, made from the heart, Greek food for an understandable price. This place is truly a gem and I wish they were open everyday or had longer hours but because they aren't, you cherish the time that you get to visit even more. I've had their lamb (no picture) and it's absolutely succulent and delicious, I also frequently get the meatballs and they are consistent every time - super delicious. Whenever I am in the area and the time is right, I stop by this place. The service is great and fast but there will be a line so get there as soon as you can. I can't wait to go back again.

$17 for a cold gyro with no sides. There's other local spots that'll at least throw in a side. Mediocre gyro.

There is a parking garage around the corner of the restaurant so that makes things very convenient. The inside decor is gorgeous and is chic but also funky fresh. I got grilled octopus over a bed of bean salad that had pieces of pomegranate in it - 10/10. The savory taste of the octopus paired against the sweetness of the salad was really delicious. For desert I got the baklava option that comes with ice cream - INCREDIBLE. You have to order it if you come here.

The serving size of the dishes I ordered were medium to small. The service was far less satisfactory than food. I tried the following dishes: 1. Complimentary pita: ~40g per piece. Not salty and paired well with the other dishes. Definitely get some! 2. Lahmacun: The lamb+beef mixture was tasty. It came with 4 pieces. 3. Branzino: ~6oz. The fish was grilled to perfection; juciy tender, and the skin was nicely charred. It was served with freh parsley and seasoned grilled tomato (salt+oregano I think). 4. Imam Bayildi: Half of an eggplant topped with sauteed onions and tomatoes. While itself was pretty normal, it went so well with the Ottoman rice. 5. Ottoman Rice: The true highlight of all the dishes I tried! It was basically Basimati rice cooked with dried apricots, raisins, almonds & pine nuts mix, and seasoned with black currant. Overall it was warm, earthy and lightly smoky. The apricot slices added some delightful sweetness and juiciness to the dish. Should pair well with Labneh, chicken and seafood. But to be honest, I can simply eat this stuff along for a whole meal! 6. Tabbouleh: They went against the traditional recipe by substituting the bulgur with quinoa and added some pomegranate arils. I liked the special texture of quinoa. The sweetness of pomegrante arils also enriched the flavors. However, I had to constantly spit the seeds when enjoying the salad. 7. Kofte: Adana style ground beef patties. Just like what I make at home haha! I ordered it as an add-on to my salad at lunchtime. It came with only 2 pieces which weighed no more than 3oz in total... Despite the delicious food, service was disappointing. The first time, the dinner, was Okay. While my food came out slowly, at least my server was aware of it and asked me how I liked the dishes. The second time, the lunch, was horrible. Even before I was seated, my server made me feel that he was reluctant to serve me, and emphasized that I had to order asap. "Luckily", I had already decided what to order. After I got my dishes, no one in the restaurant asked me if the food was Okay. And at the check, my bill was thrown onto my table. In comparison, the two ladies dining next to me came even after I started eating, but were greeted warmly and were given lots of time to decide what to order; not to mention that the staff gave them lots of suggestions, asked about their dining experience, and even chatted with them about sightseeing in DC, etc. Such discrimitory treatment is really unacceptable.

It is rare for a place to stay this consistent, but it really did not disappoint. The vibe and decor are spot on, very aesthetic and stylish without feeling like it is trying too hard. Huge shoutout to the bartender as well, because he seriously knows what he is doing and gives a 10/10 experience on the drinks. As for the food, almost everything was amazing and packed with flavor. You have to get the lamb, as it was easily the star of the night. The only thing we did not love was the butterfly shrimp. The flavor was definitely good, but the portion was surprisingly small for what they charge. Everything else was fairly priced, though. Overall, I am just happy to see Ala keep up the same great experience and atmosphere after all this time. It is ideal for a cute date night or a small group of friends who love good food. They probably need to update their soundproofing or just have fewer tables. That actually led to some confusion about the "for the table" lamb dish we ordered, which seemed to come out as sliced lamb, seasoned as described on the menu, on a plate. Frankly, for the price it didnt seem like enough for our group of 6. Also, there were 2-3 flies around our table before we sat down. They eventually left, but that probably should signal there's more mess there than just wiping down the table takes care of.

The restaurant itself is stunning. Walking in, you're immediately greeted by the massive open hearth where much of the cooking happens. Watching the chefs tend the fire throughout the evening adds another layer to the experience and sets the tone before your first bite even arrives. Our server explained the tasting menu ($95 per person) and optional wine pairing ($75 pp), but we decided to order à la carte--and I wouldn't change a thing. We started with the Carrot Havuç spread. It was impossibly light, silky, and beautifully whipped. I'll admit, the bread seemed understated at first, but after the first bite, it became clear that the spread was meant to be the star. Every bite was packed with flavor. The lamb shish kebab was incredibly tender, juicy, and perfectly seasoned. The Omani shrimp arrived with five enormous shrimp that were cooked flawlessly. Then came the whole roasted chicken. Watching it roast over the fire as we entered made us excited, but nothing prepared us for how incredible it would taste. It was, without question, some of the best chicken I've ever eaten. Moist, deeply flavorful, beautifully seasoned, and delicious completely on its own. It came with an accompanying sauce that was excellent, but honestly, use it sparingly--you don't want anything distracting from the chicken itself. When a dish can stand entirely on its own, that's greatness. Since it was a whole chicken, we happily went home with leftovers (which felt like winning the lottery). The cocktails deserve their own standing ovation. A special thank you to Nancy upstairs-- Great bartenders don't just make drinks--they elevate the entire experience, and she certainly did. The Serpent was beautifully balanced with bright citrus and herbal notes, while the Medina Palmer was refreshing, unique, and one of the most memorable cocktails I've had in a long time. Every drink felt carefully crafted rather than simply mixed. In the beginning of our night they asked if we were celebrating anything and I immediately answered, "my friend graduated from nursing school." Little did we know, they came with glasses of bubbly at the end of our dining experience to celebrate! Such a lovely gesture to end our evening. The word that kept coming up throughout dinner was divine. Service was warm, knowledgeable, and genuinely enthusiastic about guiding us through the menu. A few practical tips: * Reservations book well in advance, so plan ahead. * Street parking is limited. We chose to Uber and were glad we did. This was one of those meals where every course made us look at each other and say, "Wow." I can't wait to return.
