TWO WATER HEATERS REPLACED BEFORE THE TECHNICIAN CHECKED THE GAS Bynum & Sons Plumbing turned a shutoff of my gas service into an unnecessary $4,134 replacement of two functioning water heaters. Its response afterward was even more disturbing than the original incompetence. On Monday, August 10, a Bynum technician came to my home because neither gas water heater was producing hot water. When he saw me, he said, "I know you. I've been to your house before." The unusual remark caused me to pay particular attention to and remember him. He told me both heaters were out of warranty, could not be repaired, and had to be replaced. On Tuesday, I was shown an identifying photograph of the technician scheduled to perform the installation. I recognized him as the same man who had been in my home Monday. He then returned and replaced both heaters. Only after removing and replacing them did he check the gas supply and discover that the gas had been turned off several days earlier. The original water heaters had not caused the loss of hot water. They had not been receiving gas. This was not a subtle mechanical problem. Before condemning two gas appliances and charging a customer $4,134 to replace them, a competent plumber should determine whether they are receiving gas. The technician also obtained my electronic signatures without showing me the documents. His phone displayed only a signature field that occupied the entire screen. I could not see the document, its title, its terms, or any waiver to which my signature would be attached. I asked him to have Bynum send me copies of the transaction records. He refused to arrange it, saying he was "too busy." Within approximately three to five minutes after he left, I sent multiple text messages expressly directing him not to dispose of the removed heaters. I also reiterated my request for the records. Those texts and their timestamps are preserved. Bynum now claims its technician never came to my home Monday and that I simply called and instructed the company to replace both heaters. That account is false. I did not independently decide that two water heaters had simultaneously failed. I authorized the replacements because Bynum's technician came to my home, evaluated the situation, and told me both units were irreparable. Bynum also claims I was told that a "diagnostic" would cost $368 and supposedly chose replacement instead. No one clearly disclosed that arrangement or explained how this alleged $368 diagnostic differed from the "Free Estimate" and free consultation advertised by Home Depot, whose authorized installer Bynum was. Bynum's positions cannot be reconciled. It denies that the Monday visit occurred while simultaneously claiming I was offered and declined a diagnostic concerning the condition of the heaters. As of August 14, 2026, Bynum & Sons Plumbing has a D rating from the Better Business Bureau. The BBB identifies failure to respond to complaints as a reason for that rating. My experience provides a disturbing illustration of why consumers should pay attention to that record. What began as an elementary diagnostic failure became an effort to deny the first visit, rely upon documents I was never shown, disregard my immediate written instructions to preserve the removed heaters, and leave me responsible for a $4,134 transaction I would never have authorized if the technician had checked the gas supply first. I have disputed the charge and am submitting the evidence to the appropriate consumer-protection and professional-licensing authorities. The plumber that came out was great. The Bynum & Sons office manager was an absolute jerk. Awful and nasty human. We had an issue where there wasn't hot water after the installation, and they wanted to wait 3 days before sending him back out. It was their mistake, not mine. She was the rudest customer service person I've ever dealt with. An absolute curse word. She threw Home Depot under the bus and got ruder by the minute. I told her I'd be contacting Hone Depot and doing a negative review. She essentially asked if if I needed help finding the review page. Which ironically was the most helpful she'd been. I was about to buy a dishwasher, refrigerator and washer and dryer through Home Depot, but will be going elsewhere if that's the type of sub contractor they use. We got Bynum & Sons info through Home Depot for a plumbing project. From the first interaction to the last they were top notch and nothing less than amazing! Walfree and his team were great. Walfree communicated with us through the whole project as we were waiting for the part and came out right away to get our job done to make sure we had hot, running water. He was very quick and efficient and gave the job 100% even down to the last detail! I would give them 10 stars if I could and recommend them for any plumbing job you may need in the future! Bynum is a Home Depot installer. I have had to use them twice because of that. You actually have no choice, and you may even get a surprise if he shows up. The first was a hot water heater which they installed but did not do so to code. When the water heater failed and I had it replaced, there was a different plumbing company and they immediately spotted the problem; brought the system up to code. From my experience since I think it is Bynum philosophy to do only what the minimum contracted, and to never go over and beyond even if it means a code violation. The second plumbing company seems to have the philosophy of doing it right even if it is not in the initial description of service. My second experience was to have a sink and faucet uninstalled for a countertop installation. The reinstallation of the faucet and sink was to happen the day after the installation of the countertop. I was told that there was a broken part and they would not be going to pick it up as that was not part of their agreement with Home Depot. (confirming that they only do the minimum and not what needs to be done.) So, I had to find the part and after many many minutes on hold and transfers and this and that, I tried to reschedule the install. Of course, I could not do it with mine on. I had to do it with Home Depot. Unfortunately, I had a time constraint, but Home Depot said that they would get with Bynum and make sure it was done in time. Bynum said that Home Depot Depot couldn't tell him what to do and that they never did anything on the same day that it was requested. I am glad that they will not be doing the reinstall and I do not advise doing business with them. BYW- If you call them and they are all busy on the phone you will be sent to a number that cannot receive voice messages. When you are transferred to this number, there is no indication that you cannot leave a message... It actually says you can You will get a text message back that says you need to call the number that you just called during business hours. I mentioned this to the woman who answered the phone at Bynum and she informed me that that was exactly the way the system was supposed to work and that I was the only person who did not get that. As long as you allow them to be very flexible with what they do and when they do it, they are very pleasant on the phone when you do finally get to talk to someone. On the other hand, when I mentioned that Home Depot had promised the installation on this day, the lady went ballistic. When I explained my dilemma, she had absolutely no concern and became even more rude that I insisted that they help by honoring what Home Depot said they had agreed to . Of course her implication was that I was lying and that everybody knows that they don't do any calls on the same day for Home Depot unless it is a hot water heater emergency. Given my experience with their water heater installation I imagine that happens often. Allow yourself at least three calls to get some human on the phone, and ignore the three messages about calling during business hours. read more

Installation was good, next day install, simple job, same exact model. Only complaint was price for labor, $1,500 just for labor seemed excessive. Through Home Depot's service department I was recommended this company to install my water heater. A year later, for a separate issue, a plumber informed us that the water heater install was "borderline criminal". It was installed without replacing an old taped vent pipe, causing a slow leak of carbon monoxide into the home. Contacting the company was useless. Customer Service is lacking. Without even hearing my full concern, they began running defense. Even asking to be transferred to someone else, full defense and no accountability. However , they did inform me I was overdue for a follow up inspection. They assisted me in scheduling it and it failed. The company sent out a man who had pictures that, although he failed to replace the vent pipe, the tape was connected when he installed it. Which he had to have been careful, because it was literally dangling from the wall with no connection to any other portion of the ventilation system. He also touted that he informed us at the time what else needed to occur in the home. This bothers me because, I'd definitely remember if someone had a conversation regarding a carbon monoxide leak that could've proven fatal. I asked for documentation, because surely any company who noticed such a hazard that could pose risks (and jeopardize their business) would've documented it. There was no documentation. Do you want to know why? There was none. The conversation was never had. The company came out post inspection to 'CYA'; with no intention on fixing anything. If you're reading this being rerouted from Home Depot just know these contractors do the bare minimum. They are trying to schedule as many homes, without put in quality work. I was directed to Bynum via HomeDepot for an estimate to install a gas tankless water heater to replace an existing gas water heater. I've a utility closet that currently houses my water heater and with it removed there would be plenty of space to install the tankless unit. However the guy providing the estimate recommended the installation of an outdoor unit. I got the estimate back and the quote for installing an 8.4 GPM unit was $2,557.00. This by itself isn't a bad price given material and labor. The water heater itself is $1050 at HomeDepot as I type. However the estimate included a $1000 item to run gas and water lines through my wall a total distance of perhaps 3 feet. This is shady. The venting, water and gas lines are already present in my utility closet. I can't see a reason an indoor heater couldn't simply be connected to the existing lines and venting, other than as an excuse to charge me an extra grand! read more

They did a huge septic job for us on recommendation of the buyers of some land we sold. The septic system is fine and priced similar to another quote we got but our yard is a huge disaster and they stopped responding to us when we asked them to fix it. We rented a bobcat and leveled things out on our own but there is still standing water all in the area of the tank when it rains and for several days after which can't be good for it. read more

I had a hot water heater install. I asked if I could make payment with funds from my insurance claim and they said they only take credit card payments. Well they charged my card twice. I call them and they say we only see one payment so they can not issue me a refund. My credit card company says it was Bynum that took the two payments and I have to file a dispute to get the refund. The plumbers I dealt with were not bad, the business they work for...HORRIBLE! I was directed to this company for a toilet install via Home Depot. $400.00 total for the install of a new toilet??? I had paid half that 4 short months ago in Florida (also through Home Depot) I agree with many of the other comments about being shady, and in my opinion greedy as well. I had purchased an aftermarket bidet attachment on Amazon for like 20.00 and asked if they could do the install since they would have to replace the supply line anyway. I was quoted $350.00 for what would have taken them maybe 20 minutes. Even the plumber didn't agree with the price as they said so during our talking about it. I called the business to see if I could explain the situation and see if they could do it, totally willing to pay for it but not at 350.00 more dollars. They're customer service was rude for example talking over me and telling me I'm talking in circles, and that Home Depot associates lied to us, and that Home Depot set the prices. I requested service to pump out septic tank after realizing previous owners had not had it pumped for about 10-12 years. I was disappointed at the quality of service due to the fact that the septic tank was in an area near the sidewalk that leads to our front porch and during the pump out process the concrete on the sidewalk was chipped up. There was plenty of room between the septic tank and sidewalk that this could have been prevented. That is something not easily fixed and very apparent when people walk up to our front door. The cost went up about 3X what I expected due to additional parts needed, filter and a piece of PVC that was priced extremely high, and once I told the number of years since it had been pumped, the additional solids added to the cost also, even though it still fit on one truck. So, word of advice, don't add years since last pump out if asked, because it seems to be an automatic upcharge. I didn't have that feel good feeling about this company. read more

A nightmare for water tank installation. I went through Home Depot and got it setup. Serivceman did a horrible job and I had to call back twice to recheck work not done properly. He put a brass and copper pipes and after 1 years the pipe turn green and they want to charge a trip fee of $145 to take a look. read more

Unfortunately, my story is similar to other yelpers's -this company was scheduled through Home Depot during a new counter top installation. They were supposed to unhook an old kitchen sink and insinkerator and return 48 hours later to install the new sink, faucet, and insinkerator that we had already purchased-a seemingly simple job! Although we had already PREPAID Home Depot for the equipment AND services, and had never had a problem with the plumbing in the kitchen- after the sink was unhooked, the company workmen insisted that additional work had to be done for an ADDITIONAL $300 CHARGE !! They Insisted that they could not guarantee the work wouldn't leak unless we did as they recommended and that we could have a catastrophic leak at any time. We paid the $300 because we didn't want to delay the new countertop installation that was scheduled for the next day. When they returned to install the new equipment, they said they noticed an obviously necessary part was missing and we had to make a trip to Home Depot to try to get the needed part. After we were on our way to Home Depot to get the part, they suddenly discovered they actually had a similar part and could install it, -of course it was with yet another ADDITIONAL CHARGE. They said Home Depot agreed to cover that fee. Scheduling them was also a problem! The lady who answered their phone said we could not choose between morning or afternoon work-they would tell us when they were coming. Home Depot personnel were nice but they could not be onsite to see this or supervise-and they did not give us a choice of plumbers. I plan to ask the local store kitchen personnel if they ever read the Yelp Reviews. We will never use Bynum again!! Horrible service. Their plumber came out and incorrectly installed the garbage disposal, where it leaked continuously under the sink. Their second plumber came out and he was amazed at how shotty the work was and fixed it. Their Manager refused to even apologize to me, even when I asked for one, by simply repeating that the issue was resolved. Unbelievable. I have to admit it I am a stickler with reading reviews before hiring a company to work on my car or my home. 90% of the bad reviews had to do with Home Depot. My situation was different I hired this company to come out and work on my septic tank due to a back up in one of my bathrooms, when they came out they were very professional they answered all my questions (which was many) Sam walked me through all the steps they were going to take to make sure the backup would be resolved. Have to admit the cost to repair made me gasp a little, but I have done all my research before hand and I knew my bottom price to the highest, they were very reasonable with the cost and the material Sam used a better grade of material than what was installed when the house was built. I am a very picky person i write reviews on everything good or bad because I don't sit on a bed of money (every penny counts) . We bought a sink, faucet, and drain from Home Depot. We were told if we prepaid, the plumbing company would be out sooner. Bynam & Sons Plumbing came out to install the sink. The whole interaction was bad from the start. He came in the door complaining about how he went to the wrong address almost like he was trying to blame me although he had the correct address. He typed in road instead of drive. He saw the sink we bought and immediately started taking about how it wasn't measured right and the sink may not fit. I measured that sink correctly, but he kept pushing that it wasn't measured properly? And for what? No reason at all. The sink ended up fitting perfectly. Then, he started with the shut off valves under the sink saying they don't work. It's funny because they worked the day prior. He told my wife that he had to replace the shut off valves because they would not connect to the new sink. He explained this to her all wrong. He made her think that the sink was not compatible with the pipes unless he changed the shut off valves. However, he told me that he had to replace the valves because they were bad. Come to find out, all he had to do was use a thread adapter, but he cut the threads and added two shut off valves as thread adaptors. I'm sure they knew this was the more expensive way to do it and it costed us an extra $100 when they are $9 a piece at Home Depot. When I got home I noticed that he never removed the old shut off valves which is what he told me he was doing when I spoke with him on the phone. After distracting my wife with the fit of the sink, the so called cheapness and potential cracking of our counter top, and the shut off valves, she heard a lot of banging. She was trying to stay out of their way and the next thing she knew there was a hole through the top of the sink for the soap dispenser that came with the faucet. She never got the chance to tell him that we didn't want that soap dispenser there because of everything else he was drawing attention to. It's common sense that if you're going to punch a hole in someone's sink you ask them first to make sure that they want it there. His response was to blame her for it. That she should've told him before he started the work. Again, she did not get a chance to tell him and had no idea that he was about to do that. When it came time for him to install the drain, he told her that we had bought a returned drain from Home Depot and that it did not have all of the screws. His response to this drain mishap was to blame us. He asked her how we didn't know that it was a returned drain because it had tape on the top. When we purchased the drain all of the other drains had tape on them. In an attempt to keep the peace, she told him if he could show her how to put the drain on she could put the drain on herself after she got off work and he said that she can't do it, but I (her husband) probably could. That was uncalled for. He said we would end up calling him back out there to do it. He seemed aggravated at this point and blatantly stated that it was an inconvenience for him to have to drive all the way back out here for the drain even though he got paid for the work he did. He wanted her to leave work while she was on the clock and go to Home Depot, when he's contracted by Home Depot, to go return the drain and get one with screws so he wouldn't have to come back out. This is something he could have done on his own and then come back to the house that day to install the drain. She then recommended that he check Ace Hardware down the street which is five minutes from our house and he was so insistent that Ace Hardware would not have the right screws as they are "specialty" screws that are exclusive to that drain. Those screws appeared to be basic machine set screws and that Ace Hardware would in fact have those screws in stock. This guy came across like he did not want to be bothered at all despite the fact that we paid him to do a job. Also, a true professional would verify that all parts are accounted for prior to starting any job, especially when they are relying on the customer to provide all of the parts. We tried calling the company and spoke to the boss. They were not willing to replace our sink for the hole that was created without our permission, nor did she seem to really care that we were unhappy with the service. My wife believes they are the cheapest option for Home Depot to contract with and because their business comes consistently from Home Depot, they don't care how they treat people. Overall, the plumber, which he never told us his name, nor anyone at the company were very friendly or helpful to our situation. I would advise against using this company. read more

I needed my septic tank serviced, I was quoted over the phone 425.00. when the tech came he asked questions about the size of the tank, last time serviced, etc. also said it would be 425.00. he said based on my house size the tank would be 1500 gallons, and it will be 425 to dig and clean. then after digging up my yard, he told me my tank is actually only 1000 gallon, but it's going to be 1200.00 to service it. I called the office and they said yeah we spoke with him and it's full so there's an extra charge and then there's a 275.00 removal disposal fee added on as well. what was the original quote for? Were they not going to dispose of it then? and how if it was 500 gallons smaller than you originally quited am I now having to pay over 750 more? it would be interesting to know if they have ever actually kept to their quotes, very doubtful. i had no choice but to pay, the yard was already destroyed so there was nothing more to do. what a way to do business just to initially rip people off. I could hear the girls in the office giggling to each other as they said, we will see what we can do, then nope it's 1200.00 SCAM!!! do not believe their quotes, shop around and find a reputable company. read more

I live in a 6yr old house. These guys came to deliver and install a water heater. After arrival, they told me that the can't replace my old water heater because they have to walk through a bathroom. On top of that, one of the guys had dirty shoes and stained up my carpet. Called GA Natural Gas and they told me that what they told me was not a thing. Should have been no issues. This has to be one of the worst plumbing companies around. They came to my house to install a hot water heater through Home Depot. The hot headed Plumber did exactly what he wanted and left. The water heater was to large for the space, the drip pan was even larger which caused it to fold up on the sides. He drilled holes into my foundation that was not needed and processed to use pavers from my yard to prop the heater on. I reached out to Bynum and Son's the very next day to no avail. The office manager Jeannie was rude and uncooperative. The county failed the Inspection but they didn't care to correct the mess. Home Depot had to send another company out to removed the over sized water heater/drip pan as well as capping the water line that was not needed. I now have a useless hole in my foundation that has no purpose. All request to speak with the owner was blocked by the rude office manager. I don't recommend this company at all. read more

Wish I had read the reviews from this site first. They came out to pump my septic tank and after digging up the dirt told me "this is bad" Had me scared into agreeing to all kinds of work, for thousands of dollars. My septic tank lids were broken and needed to be replaced but they had to order them so it would have to wait until after the weekend. Also told me I would need my sewer lines replaced (without doing any kind of testing for that, mind you) for about $10,000. I did not agree to that, but they said I would need my tank pumped every couple of months until I got those repairs, in part because it would take months to get a permit for it, which is not true, either. Long story short, I decided to have them simply pump the tank, and have it done that day because it had flowed above the lids and my toilet was gurgling. They were to come back Mon to replace the lids with a riser. Over the weekend I changed my mind due to the cost of all this and I called someone else. When I told this new company I was charged $750 to pump it, they said "You didn't happen to use Bynum, did you?" my heart sank. I knew then that I was swindled, especially since I had been told I had a 1000 gallon tank, but it turns out I only have a 750 gallon tank. They charged me $750 for a 750 gallon tank! The new septic service got my new tank lids that day, no having to order them. They also ran some tests to determine if the sewer lines needed to be replaced and saw no evidence of that. Yes, they're old, and I may need a repair or replacement someday, but there is no hurry. They replaced the lids, one with a riser, and charged me less than what Bynum was asking. The stress that Bynum caused me because of their snake oil sales pitch is overwhelming. Stay away from this place. Their poor reviews on Yelp are accurate read more

I wish I would have read all of these comments before going to Home Depot. The home Depot associate told me a new water heater and install would run about $1k. When Bynum called they quoted $1368. I figured it was ok since it included the haul away. When tech arrived he found that we needed an additional part that would cost $350. When it was time to pay the total cost was almost $1900. Almost double what the Home Depot associate told me was the ball park. I will never work with Bynum or Home Depot again. The water heater price was about $600 so they take away $1300 for installation which is whaT Lowe's quoted for everything. I was a little skeptical after reading some of these reviews, most of them concerned plumbing/Home Depot/Lowes customers and installation of water heaters, etc. I had them install a septic tank baffle after being quoted prices 40-50% higher. My tech, Eric, was on time, very friendly and most important knowledgeable on my situation. I have to tell ya I was a little worried initially but Eric put me at ease. I would leave ZERO stars if possible. They do NOT even come close to showing up in their promised "timeframe window" of either 9-12 or 11-2. TWO times they called about 15 minutes before the window ended, saying they were either running late or ran into "previous install problems". AND forget about trying to get a window between 9:30 - 1pm because they will NOT do it. Their "customer service" person, Jeanie was so RUDE and hung up on me because THEY could not get me into a decent window and stick to it. They were able to perform the job within 24 hours, they were punctual, and most importantly, they were honest! The job was completed quickly and for less than initially quoted! So I set an appointment two weeks in advance through home depot. They were to come at 1-4, but I received a text at 8 the morning of saying the appointment was at 9-12. They refused to change the time to the original appointment. They also hung up on me when I asked why the time changed. The tech was awesome. Took nearly a week to get a receipt and the phone reps act like they have no idea what's going on

Went to Home Depot to get some help with a hot water heater. No hot water. The salesman was helpful and said because ours was only 7 years old, it might just need a new heating element. But he helped me pick out a new one (50 gal) and set me up with Bynum Plumbing. He said because it was only 10am, they would most likely come that day. He said they would call quickly. After an hour, I called them. First, I was told that it would be 2 weeks before they could come? Then I was told that a 50 gallon wouldn't work and to be "up to codes" we would have to get an 80 gallon tank and it would be a special order. Also that a technician would have to come do an inspection to see if the lines would work or they might have to do more plumbing work. When I asked about what if I didn't even need all that and it could be fixed, I was still told it would be a week before they could come. I told her we only had a 66 gal tank now and the "codes" thing didn't seem like something we would have to do. We had never had an issue with not having enough hot water and only 3 people live in the house. I just felt like I was being taken for as much as they could get out of me and I didn't appreciate it at all!!! By the way, I called multiple plumbers after this. Not a single one told me I needed all that. They all said a 50 gallon would be fine. I was able to get another plumber out that day and all we needed was a new thermostat anyways! I wish I had of looked them up before calling them. They came out two days ago because I was having problems with the toilet flushing. They said it was my septic tank so they pumped it out and said it was ok to use. Today we have sewage coming up in the tub which smells really bad. I called them. They said call a plumber after they charge me over $600 to fix this problem. They said that's new problem we caused... it's only two of us here right now... they said they would have to charge me again to fixed it. So now I have a legal problem. read more

I'm a little surprised at the reviews on here, but then again since they seem to be mostly related to home depot contracted services I'm not. I contacted Bynum directly on NYE to schedule a septic pump out. They offered me a morning or afternoon option. I was told what the cost would be up front for a basic pump out and dig out to get to my tank lid. Derek and Zach showed up within the time scheduled. They were friendly and informative along the way. They discovered some other issues with my system but since it's from the 80's I wasn't at all surprised that I might have more that needed to be done. Their prices are reasonable compared to their chain competitors. I appreciate that they are local and family owned and will be using them going forward. read more
