Go here at your own risk. I had a procedure that was denied by my insurance but no one told me. I did not learn until after the procedure was finished that it was not pre-authed, according to the lady at the desk on 12/17. I also had no discussion at anytime with a patient coordinator or given any information regarding cost to me on or after the prior initial appointment, per the Byrd Dental website. See screenshot from their site. The lady charged me 50 something dollars after the procedure, then we were not informed of the full cost until 12/18 when they claimed it was just denied. That paperwork shows it was denied on the 11th of November(almost 6 weeks ago) though, so they did try to pre-auth it but it was denied and no one said anything. Now I am supposed to pay 500 bucks because no one informed me it was not going to be covered, as any respected business would do. Otherwise, it is just deceptive, bad faith business practices. Simply put, if I knew it was denied, I wouldn't have had it done because I just had it done a few months ago, at a different dentist. Byrd Dental knew this and they likely knew it would be denied based on my conversations while in office. The dentist's office is blaming the insurance, the insurance says it is the dentist's office. Neither informed me of a denial and neither will have to pay for it. Just to be clear, we got appointment reminders through text, email, and calls including a real person. The dentist's office had ample opportunity to say it was denied and did not. The insurance company says they sent the mail but it never arrived in our mailbox, or to the mail distribution center where photos of incoming mail are taken. We have other mail from them regarding the previous dentist but nothing regarding Byrd Dental and we have scoured the digital photos to be certain. Byrd Dental has a chance to right this situation and keep a customer. If they do, I will update this review. If not, I hope you avoid them so this does not happen to you. read more

I'm honestly shocked to see all the bad reviews, I came to Byrd dental after I had many many bad experiences at my previous dentist, Byrd has been good, maybe not great, but definitely good. I saw a ton of people complaining about appointments not being kept, all I can say is that this hasn't been me experience at all, not only have my appointments been kept promptly, but I have had to call multiple times over the past few months for emergency appointments due to some dental issues that I'm working on fixing, on almost every occasion they have gotten me in that same morning for my emergency, the could times they couldn't do that, they fit me in that same week. My bad experiences with my prior dentist involved things like failed root canals, placing a crown on a tooth that needed root canal treatment, without realizing the tooth needed a root canal, then getting a lump on my gums and having to drill a hole through the brand new crown to do that root canal. To make matters even worse, they put a filling in the root canaled crown which leaked for who knows how long, destroyong the tooth and requiring extraction. This same dentist also placed a crown that didn't cover all of my tooth on the inside portion of my mouth, I didn't find out until it was too late and that tooth also required extraction. My daughter had a root canal that also failed, she ended up going to a specialist for retreatment. All of this and more happened in a 2 year period with this dentist. This is what a 1 star dentist experience looks like, Byrd dental is definitely not a 1 star dentist. read more

My husband has been going here for more than 15 years, and I've been at least 10 years. I have had a LOT of work done. The first thing I noticed was how well versed the desk staff is with all the different insurance plans. When the dentist suggests a procedure, they present you with a written treatment estimate to sign before starting. It shows what your expected oop costs will be. Yes - it can be a while to get appointments for routine care. They even open on Sunday now to keep up with the cleanings! However, I have had a few emergency situations and always been squeezed in the same day or the next day. They do try to do as much as they can in house, such as root canals - they also make their own crowns on site. It can happen that when they get into something, they'll realize it's best done by a specialist. Rather than being mad, I appreciate that they tried to save me the $$, time and travel to the specialist. My husband had several implants and a bridge done by Dr. Byrd - for about one quarter the price of those "smile factories". Except for emergencies, I have always had Dr. Law or Dr. Mak - and a couple times Dr. Byrd. I've always had one of the same 2 hygienists. Nothing is perfect, but we've been very pleased and continue to go to Byrd Dental. read more

I finally left this practice after multiple bad experiences. There is one hygienist that would tell me very personal stuff about staff and patients which is a HIPAA violation. She also told me the brown color near my gums is from eating blueberries and to rinse with peroxide daily. When I came back, the other hygienist said no it comes off easily and scraped it off. The last time I went, they told me there was no dentist in the office. Because I was a routine patient, they didn't need one there. Their wait times around six months. The staff turnover rate is really high. They need to get their act together. read more

I had really negative experiences with Dr. Law and I'm still hurting from a tooth Dr Mak messed up on around 4 years ago. I was a patient here for years and I really liked one of the dentists they had, but shortly after covid started that dentist disappeared. Back in 2019 I was seeing Dr Byrd and he did a good job with his dental work, but he could be a little mean in that "I say whatever I want" kind of way. It didn't bother me enough to stop seeing him. I stopped seeing him because once he opened his Hagerstown location, getting an appointment with him in the frederick office became impossible and I didn't want to drive to Hagerstown. This may be outdated info since I haven't been to this office in 2 years but the receptionists I interacted with were there for years, and they were consistently friendly to me. Whatever issues I had always came from the dentists. When I was at this practice frequently I often felt like they did whatever they wanted to do regardless of what I wanted or asked for. I usually came in for toothaches or broken Brittle teeth but I was blamed/shamed and sometimes even scolded for not flossing (despite the fact that I was flossing), or using a prescribed fluorinated toothpaste - which is the only thing I refused to do because I already get a lot of fluoride in my daily routine. I struggle with cavities and I've had this struggle since I was a child. I wasn't allowed to eat candy or drink soda as a kid and I still don't as an adult so it was really upsetting when some of the dentists at Byrd made me feel like my cavities were due to laziness or some other fault of mine. It was even more upsetting that they never really seemed to help me get my teeth fixed. This office would probably be best suited for someone who needed routine cleaning or simple fillings. I wouldn't recommend this office to anyone who needed a lot of work, but I think experiences will vary depending on whatever new dentists they bring into the practice. The best Dentists don't seem to stick around for very long. The place is clean though! read more

I was due for root canal for my molar that has a big filling. I went there, they started the procedure. after nearly one hour of my mouth wide opened and scraping the said filling and who knows what else they were doing in my tooth, they put another filling (temporary) and then talk to me, explaining some Dental stuff that I understand as they CANNOT DO THE JOB .. And had me to sent to specialist.. I also pay 56$ and need to take antibiotics and pain meds. read more

I only went in to get a teeth cleaning and I ended up not getting my teeth cleaned because they wouldn't do it unless I paid over $1,000 to have my pockets cleaned and sign me up for a Maintenace program! They told me my pockets were 4's and 5's. That is contrary to every dental exam I had prior to this visit and my subsequent exams by other dental offices. Prior to be seen at Byrd Dental I verified multiple times that I only wanted what was covered by my insurance and nothing else. They verified the X-rays would be completely covered by insurance. Now a year later they are trying to bill me! I get my teeth cleaned every 6 months and have always had 1's and 2's with a couple 3's. I ended up going back to my family dentist and paid out of pocket for a teeth cleaning since they were no longer in my plan and guess what, My pockets were 1's and 2's with a few 3's! Coincidentally my husband was told the exact same thing that he had 4's and 5's and needed his pockets cleaned with a maintenance plan. He also went back to our family dentist and it was verified that he did not have 4's and 5's and did not his pockets cleaned either and was also able to get his teeth cleaned that day. I do NOT recommend Byrd Dental! read more

Extremely unprofessional office. I have been using this practice for a couple of years and kept giving them chances. Yesterday I have reached my final straw... I have been waiting for my appointment for over 4 weeks because I needed one at a particular time of the day due to work. Got reminders via email and text the day before. Then received a call that Dr. Mak is in the office until 1 pm and she won't be able to see me at 4:20. No explanation. Just kept repeating that the doctor is there until 1 o'clock like I am mentally challenged and don't understand her. When tried to reschedule I was told she was pretty booked... Clearly they did not care if I am seen or not. Stay away to spare yourself from dealing with unprofessional rude people. read more

Go somewhere else! We tried to follow our hygienist from another practice but the actual dentists turned out to be extremely unprofessional. They over and double charge consistently! The partners cannot agree with one another and in fight with one another. This is not the experience you would want for yourself or your family. read more

I was a patient here a couple years ago but moved farther north so I decided to find another provider closer to my new home. I then went to two new dentists and had horrible service at both places. Shocked to see only 3 stars. I can go anywhere but choose here because they have friendly staff, clear billing, nice office and great with kids. My ex takes our daughter and messes up the i​nsurance cards every time...they have always been friendly and resolved it without billing direct. I feel they really care about patients and family has never had bad expierence in last few years. I moved to moco and tried a new dentist once and I won't do that again. read more

Hygienist tested positive for Covid. Still working. Staff said she should not have told me! Glad she did but why would you come in? I went for my teeth cleaning to Byrd Dental in Frederick Maryland on December 29 early in the morning. I do not live close to this dentist so it took a while to get there. I walked in wearing my N45 mask. I was called back to have my teeth cleaned. My hygienist whose name I won't mention publicly but the dental office knows who this is, tells me while I'm sitting in the chair, after I tell her I'm immunosuppressed, that she has tested positive for Covid a couple days earlier! I had just taken off my mask to get my teeth cleaned. She is sitting a foot away from me in a paper mask. I told her I didn't think I could stay because I was immunosuppressed. She told me that's why she let me know that she tested positive for Covid. But that was her first test on Friday and her test two days later was negative. When I asked if she would put a shield over her mask she said they don't work. She told me she would double mask which she never did so I got up and left. When I went to the desk, there were three people sitting there -only one with a paper mask on. the others no mask. We are in a pandemic. In Montgomery County where I live thank goodness, everyone must wear a mask indoors. I also live with someone who is severely immunosuppressed with chronic lung disease and diabetes. I told the hygienist this. Still only s paper mask. And would not wear a shield. I had also just gotten a negative Covid test. Literally the night before I walked in the dental office. A PCR test at CVS. Because I care about others in a medical office. The other thing I don't appreciate is this hygienist said, "well everybody's got this now so if you don't want to get it you should not go to any doctor or go anywhere." Well some dentists and doctors and their staff care enough for their patients that are staff would never come in testing positive for Covid. they would at least have the decency to quarantine first I don't understand this and I'm not sure I will be back ever to this dental office. By the way I'm not feeling well now. And I have been nowhere but this office since I tested negative. While I agree people are entitled to their own opinions, I do not agree that in any dental or medical office, anyone should be allowed to be around patients with no mask on like at the desk. And someone who was actually working in your mouth should double mask or have a shield on. And they should never just have tested positive for Covid. Dr Byrd himself will be hearing about this. And I will make sure to let people know. It is not safe to go there if you or your loved ones are immunosuppressed and have underlying conditions. And I don't know what will happen now to me and my loved one who have underlying conditions, Not sure why the office is run this way. Not sure why they don't care. But I am horrified. read more

First, I had to go in due to a molar tooth that had broken and since gone bad. I have an irrational fear about dentist visits so I've been dreading and procrastinating this day for some time. I'm giving Byrd Dental 4 stars instead if 5 only because of schedule and front desk manners. I know its typical to have to wait a while regardless of appointment, but really, why take appointments if they're only generally kept at best? This isn't necessarily a fault with this office, its common everywhere I've been. Moving on...the waiting room is comfortable, but I felt odd when the receptionist twice called my name and I looked over at her and said "yes?'...as I was sitting 5 feet away and there was no one else in there....and she said (both times) "come to the front please." Fine. Stiff protocol here, I get it. Filling in the paperwork was easy as it was on an iPad in a secure app that led me through the steps. I signed my paperwork on a computer signature pad. Now for the dental experience... After I was seated in "The Chair" I was visited by Dr. Byrd's assistant who was pleasantly but not overly chatty. Dr. Byrd came in and asked me a couple of questions, allowing me to briefly tell him about my issue. He reclined my chair and looked at my tooth. He wasted NO time in raising my chair back up and giving a brief verbal order to the nurse, then left the room while I was readied for an x-ray. Afterward, the screen behind me revealed the bone picture, and when he came back in he muttered his concurrence with what he saw. He then sat with one knee over the other in a chair across from me and carefully explained my options. I like that. A doctor who treats you like a real person. He was patient with me and my questions. He was forthright with the prices in my options too. A class act. The procedure went very well considering what he had to deal with. He was firm but careful. It went longer than I wanted, but that wasn't their fault. It got complicated but he handled the situation expertly. Afterward, I was given an instruction sheet of what to expect and what to do, which made me feel better. With that and my prescriptions in hand I left as quietly as I had arrived. I had my wisdom teeth ripped out when I was in middle school, without being put under.. to say my feelings towards the dentist was not pleasant, would be an understatement. I tried Byrd dental around this time last year and it's been nothing but an amazing experience. Laurelle is who I see during my visits and she's amazing. You can tell she truly loves her job and it shows with her knowledge and skills. Highly recommend this Dental practice to anyone that may have had a bad experience in their past. read more

I like this group a ton. Myra is seriously an awesome person and excellent at her job. She is fantastic with my daughter. The hours are flexible which is why I chose this place. Dr. Byrd is an easy going fella. He's straight forward. Dr. Law is a very kind lady. My daughter is in need of work and I asked her 100 questions and she answered them all. I like to have an understanding step by step what's going on.. Dr. Z ( I don't even know his name but I know it's Z) not sure how I feel about him... I don't feel this office tries to rip you off or over price procedures at all.. Office staff is very polite and the office is always so clean. I like the little goodies they have for the children, it gives them something to look forward to and keeps their mind off things.. Finally got another check. I'm done, won't be back too much time and energy to get money that never should have been charged. Got a check fo $17... they owe me about $200 over 2 appointments...Clearly they don't know what they are doing in the office, So, my husband had a root canal "redone"... We have insurance... good insurance, but my husband was charged over $200 at the time of the appointment. I called and was told to wait to see what the insurance would cover. Well I can look it up online and tell you exactly what the insurance company will cover why can't they? So insurance covered all but $36. They tried to tell me the ins didn't pay yet, so I conferenced the ins company in with the Dr office. It had been paid. That was 3 months ago and I have not received a refund. They knowingly over charge and hope you don't notice, then hold your money even after weekly calls... the "office manager" is never in, and has yet to return any of my phone calls. still no check. Myra the hygienist is the best. This place is legit if you want articulate people who are highly intelligent working on your teeth. And the massage chair feature while receiving dental work made me almost completely lose my hatred of the dentist. I'm so glad I made the switch. Everyone was friendly from the receptionists to the dentist that filled my cavity. I will definitely be doing my routine cleanings from now on. read more

I had to do an update due to an issue that came up after I wrote my initial review. I am giving this dental office a lower rating due to lack of communication. My husband started to have work done (the start of a root canal) and was promptly referred to a specialist before the dentist even finished the root canal. He was told by the Dentist, that he actually had three nerves connected instead of the normal one and that a specialist would have to finish the job. Being sent to a specialist isn't what caused the lower rating but breaking a piece of a dental tool off in his gums and not communicating this with him is a HUGE problem in my books. My husband was unaware of this issue until he went to the specialist and they told him about it. I still want to say the front desk staff, as well as Myra (who was my hygienist) and the male hygienist that took care of my husband were all great but if there is no communication or trust at the higher level then there is no purpose in my family getting our dental needs completed at this office. read more

Dr. Byron Byrd is the best dentist ever! Or, at least in my 68 years of dental experiences. When I called his office in Frederick and explained how much pain I was in due to a botched bridge from another dentist I was given an appointment the very same day. Dr. Byrd examined my teeth and took x-rays to see how much damage was done by the other dentist. The compassion from Dr. Byrd and his staff is unparalleled by any other office I have ever been to. I love the fact that they make you feel like you are an important part of the family, so much so I referred my daughter, her husband and my best friend. Although, I live in Rockville, my dentist (Dr. Byrd) is in Frederick and/or Hagerstown, both offices have people that care and it is apparent his staff loves him too. He takes most insurance and you can make payments as well. So, don't be scared, he is not like the rest. Just call and tell him Paris said hello. read more

I broke a tooth and it was really bothering me. I called Byrd Dental in Frederick for an emergency appointment and Dr. Zaner was able to see me the next morning. The office is clean and ultra-modern with the latest and greatest equipment (more on that later). New patient paperwork was all done on electronic tablet (which was great--most offices make you hand-write your contact info 10 times). After an x-ray and exam I was informed that I would need a root canal, tooth buildup, and a crown. I had one of these done years ago and it took several long appointments, so I was really surprised and pleased to hear that it could all be done that same day. Dr. Zaner was great--very friendly, very professional and with really good hands. He got me numb (didn't feel the shot, or any pain at all through the procedure), and the root canal was done in like 45 minutes (new digital x-rays machine so x-rays are ready instantly; everything was automated so it all went really quick). He prepared the tooth for the crown and used a digital scanner for the impression instead of the old fashioned gaggy paste material; quick and easy. Then the impression was beamed to a 3D milling machine in the back room and the crown was fabricated on the spot in 20 minutes--no sending it to a lab, no walking around with an ugly temporary! I left the office with a perfect-looking crown that fits and works great. Wish I could give 6 stars! read more

Although Dr. Byrd seems to be knowledgeable, the staff is sorely lacking. The dental assistant was rude and condescending. I went to these people for help, big mistake. All I received was ridicule from the dental assistant and office staff. All medical fields should have some degree of compassion, but you won't get it at Byrd dental. read more

The service is great. Billing? Different story. I walked in with pain, a nice assistant told me what needed to be done. She took my insurance information and came back with an estimate of how much this process was going to cost (Close to $500) and I greed. Since this was a multi step procedure, every-time I go in they would tell me your insurance did not pay for this or that. The total amount I had to pay out of pocket in the end was over $900. When I questioned this billing process I was told by the front desk that it is my responsibility to check on what my insurance covers. I work in healthcare and the one thing I understand about patients is that they don't really understand what healthcare providers are saying when it comes to procedures. It should be the healthcare providers duty to be explicit about services they are providing and the cost. This is just taking advantage on a person in pain. read more
