Had not been here before and went at 7:00 on a Saturday night. Six of us sampled a bunch of the small plates. The poutine is amazing. The Brussel sprouts, octopus, and pretzels were great, too. The opinions on the wings and crab cakes ranged from good to eh. Enchiladas are really good, and a huge portion. They have 4oz beer samplers, and we liked quite a few types. After spending a couple of hours there, we couldn't figure out why it wasn't more crowded. One friend suggested the name and another the location. The beer, food and service were all great. Beer is ok, food is maybe a tad better. Service is slow, last time I was in and this time I sat invisible at the bar for close to 10 mins. By no means busy enough to yield that slow of service. Improve that, maybe smile and things will improve. I'll continue to visit but it's annoying. read more

Stopped in here on their first day. While the variety of food and beer options was low, what they did have was well received by my group and me. All of their beers were solid. I especially liked the Goldblatz. I'm really looking forward to see what else they have down the line. The food was also very good. The octopus was one of the best I've ever had. I wasn't in love with the cheese curd batter, but enjoyed trying a different take on an increasingly go-to dish for brewpubs. Can't wait to see what else Byway has in store in the future! read more

The beer was great (white stout w/ chocolate and coffee). The food was ok but they're over-priced for what you get. My sister ordered the chicken entree for $17 and received a chicken leg on French fries. She complained that it was an incredibly small portion and mushy...maybe too long on the rotisserie. The apricot chicken salad sandwich was $11 and $3 more for fries. The bill was $48.17 for two 8 oz. glasses of beer, ice tea, chicken entree and chicken salad sandwich w fries. This place deserves 5 stars and nothing else. The food was all prepared fresh and tasted awesome. Got the octopus, poutine, sloppy joe, and mussels. That may sound like an eclectic mix of stuff, but it was truly delicious. The beer selection was also very good, but I am not an IPA guy, so I tend to get the watered down stuff and enjoy it anyways. Their beers were safe. Not too different but fine. They have 6 beers so far and hope their beers mature as they do. The food seemed gastro-pub-ish and a bit intimidating like mussels and octopus...but would try the burger or meat platter next time. The place is huge and great for social people. A fantastic find. Robin was quick, polite and helpful. We had the stout. Very very nice brew. Smooth, no bitterness. Had the octopus appetizer, very tender, no knife needed, the olive sauce was very tasty and complimented octopi perfectly. Hubby had Titan burger and loved it. Was here on opening day and it was jamming. Cool, open space. Atmosphere was great and service was solid considering how busy it was. Everyone was very friendly and I figure service times will only improve with a few days/weeks under their belt. Just four beers available currently but spoke with some of the staff and there will be more varieties coming soon as they get more acquainted with the new brewing equipment. Food was outstanding: smoked wings on special were excellent and the burger was cooked to juicy perfection. Everything I saw/sampled from the kitchen looked great. This is a very nice brewery. It also happens to have a great kitchen. I've been here twice now, and each time the beers have been remarkable, memorable, and really impressive. Another reason I really like this place is because of one special dish that they have on the menu-poutine... OK so poutine is not necessarily everybody's go to item, but it's a great comfort food and except for the fact that the Canadians don't do poutine very well, poutine is potentialLu a really great dish! I started on my poutine craze a decade ago and I would try poutine when I would go to Canada and in most places it was french fries with shillings brown gravy on top. Insipid, violent, really unimpressive. Then, I started going to breweries in the United States that were more less near the Canadian border, and started to find some interesting poutine. So now I'm really confused, is poutine a Canadian thing or is it a US? I don't know. So anyway I go to byway brewing, here in suburban Chicago and Indiana, and I order their poutine, which ends up being the finest routine - I've ever had. I mean it's it's comfort food on 11 and it really is wonderful tasty. It is a great dish. The first time I had it, back in May I had it with a bunch of different byway beers, they were all really good, but the poutine was amazing! The poutine had poached eggs these little dollops they look like dollops of cheese or sour cream but they were wonderful poached eggs instead, and poached just enough that they weren't runny inside. They put a ton of cheese curds on the plate I mean it's the second most important ingredient after the Serrano peppers oh did I mention the Serrano Chiles? I'm sorry, I should have... The next thing, and another equally important ingredient in this very perfect poutine dish, is the pulled pork. It is tender it is so meeting it's juicy and it's just got a little bit of al dente chewiness to it and it along with the pork gravy makes for a wonderful concoction on top of the fries. The Serrano chiles are exquisite - sliced long way and deep fried, they are crispy spicy and add a memorable kick to the dish. Oh yeah, there are french fries underneath all this good stuff, and the french fries are very nice, buy all the stuff that's on top makes for a meal in itself and if you never get a chance to eat one french fry underneath it's not the end of the world. The french fries are good, especially when they're bathed in all this goodness that was above, but again it's not the end of the world if you don't get to the french fries. However, I was trained to eat all on my plate so I eat the french fries and they're really quite nice. I mean they are are wonderful and of course they're bathed all that good stuff they're even better! The first time I was here, I had to poutine and some great beers, then I went home for a couple months. And I continued to harken back to the really wonderful poutine I had, and I knew that the next time I was going to be up this way, I would come back here for the poutine. I did that yesterday and the place rocks it's it is absolutely a great place to stop by try the beers and try the food - you will not be disappointed! read more
