Located in Palo Alto, Byxbee park is an interesting integration of public art and a number of nature friendly trails. We came here for a quick hike on a weekday evening and were pleasantly surprised to see the number of small trails available. The one we took was fairly scenic and located close to a water body. With regards to the facilities available out here, there are public bathrooms along with ample parking space. My recommendation would be to come as close to sunset as possible to enjoy great views

Sun 3/14/21 checked out Byxbee Park Open Space, Palo Alto to do easy flat walk. First parking lot I saw was small and looked full, went further to the next parking lot and got a spot. They have separate bathrooms, women's has 2 stalls, 1 sink. Sign says 1 person allowed inside at a time. I walked around looking for the 3 artworks there: The Chevrons, Wind Wave, & The Pole Field. Also saw a temporary artwork: Foraging Islands, 2018. After I took some pics I didn't see where I was stepping almost stepped on a dead rabbit, so gross. Went over to the Observation Deck and took more pics. Also I walked over to the Duck Pond part of Palo Alto Baylands.

Byxbee Park is a fantastic place to walk or ride your bike! The tranquil location allows you to take in some surprising vistas of the San Francisco Bay, the East Bay, Palo Alto, Menlo Park and the Santa Cruz Mountains to the west. If you want to enjoy some exercise in a relatively safe location that offers some wonderful views, then this park was made just for you! It's very close to the Palo Alto Airport, golf range, duck pond and Bayland Nature Preserve. Don't take my word for it. Enjoy it for yourself!

Amazing on leash dog friendly park! Locals are very respectful of the space and it's very rare to see any dog poop on the trails. It's very empty on weekday afternoons! Parking is plenty during this time. This is a beautiful park that is under a flight path so you get to see cool small planes fly by while also enjoying the beautiful geese and ducks that live here. You can tell people keep their dogs on leash by how indifferent the geese are to seeing your pups! The route around the whole park takes me approximately ~50 minutes to finish with my dogs. There is not much elevation either so it's a very easy walk.

Byxbee Park, unless you have lived in Palo Alto for a while, many do not realize that its basically a topsoil cap on the old Palo Alto landfill. The landfill which was open for 80 years closed in 2011 and the City re-purposed the area and added all that area to the at the time small park that existed alongside. That landfill legacy is evident by the various vents that collect methane that will no doubt bubble up from the landfill for decades to come. The park has numerous gravel paths that meander about the park. There is also a perimeter trail of sorts that covers a good 2/3 of the park and runs along the base of the giant hill. Looking West from the peak you can easily spot the former Maritime and VOA Station, KFS/KROJ. The station was used to communicate with ships. After the Titanic there was a requirement to have a Morse code operation on duty 24/7. During WWII the Navy used it to communicate with its capital ships in the Pacific. It eventually became unused and donated to the city. Its fenced off but there appears to be ongoing work that suggests that it may open for at least viewing. Its a great little park to visit if you have the time.

Awesome interesting park! Thanks to fellow Yelpers super cool descriptions from Larry C. and Fred T. I added this park to my list a while ago. I thought this was a no-no for me during summer time with no shade, no tres, and no willingness from my side to wake up early to go for a bike ride before sunrise...So waiting for wintery time, the day after Thanksgiving and no plans brought this weird Byxbee name to my mind...and there we went. Definitively feels weir to walk over 80 years of combined and compact Bay Area landfill trash, but so cool that is the place that is today, hikeable, walkable with dogs, rideable with bikes and even visually appealing with those interesting sculptures that blend with the ecosystem peppering here and there along the way. Heavy rain came to our encounter, but just in time to take some cool shots of this extra terrestrial looking space.

This is a wonderful park for a quick and easy stroll, bicycle ride, or to just sit and enjoy the views. My local guide and friend took me here on a weekend. There was plenty of space to park, a beautiful view of the San Mateo Bridge, abs nature preserve. I actually found out this place used to be a landfill! It doesn't seem like it, though. It is so clean and the paths are well paved. You'll see some planes often as well, since this is near a small airport.

An interesting little place to hike. Was able to get around with the baby stroller, even though the trail was bumpy. There are a few art installations around the park and there is a flood basin as well. Today's weather was perfect because it was windy, but I can see how it would get warm without any trees for shade. The parking situation was sparse, but luckily we found a spot pretty quickly. There were several benches throughout the park to rest.

I've only been here three times and I have to admit that I don't remember very much about my 1st visit lol! The past two visits, I went in the early morning to run with my gf, Ellen, :). We've ran to both directions, following the trails towards Shoreline and the trails towards Baylands/Ravenswood. I have to say that the latter was a lot more interesting with a lot better views even though depending on how far you go, but some of the sections will bring you to asphalt trail vs dirt trails while the other one (towards shoreline) is (mostly) all dirt. The restroom in the beginning of the trail is open early, wish the light would be on though as during fall/winter time, it's dark in the morning! But the toilet is fairly cleaned for a public park. If you go along the trail towards Bayland/Ravenswood, I don't think there is any water fountain on the trail but if you go to the other direction, there will be a couple water fountains about 2.5/3 miles away from the trailhead. There are lots of ducks....so it could get stinky sometimes though.. but still..It's a great place nearby where I live to find flat trails to run on!

Great views and very open hiking trails. We enjoyed riding biking on trail. Watch out as I encountered a snake right in front my bike.

Really bizarre park built on a landfill. Big sculptures utilizing recycled scrap like highway barriers. Dog friendly. Free parking.

There are benches to sit and gather. I've seen a wedding in their outdoor area and I believe you can rent the house for events. They have classes and you can volunteer in the garden too. At one time, it was also a location for photo shoots. One of my lifestyle photos was shot here. A space of beauty and peace. I appreciate that it's free for anyone.

Great Family Event... Except Someone Forgot Their Customer-Service Hat…read more We had a really good time at Gamble Garden's Second Saturday! The kids enjoyed the scavenger hunt, there were some great vendors, and the whole event had a fun, family-friendly atmosphere. I also got some pretty good footage of the scavenger hunt and everything that was going on, so there was definitely plenty to enjoy. Whoever is behind organizing the Second Saturdays deserves some credit because they're doing a great job. There was a nice variety of activities, the kids stayed entertained, and it felt like a genuine community event. Now... the reason I'm giving it 4 stars instead of 5 comes down to one particular interaction. There was an older gentleman named Matthew who was helping out and wearing a vest. Let's just say Matthew and my wife and I did not exactly become best friends that afternoon. Some of the comments he made toward us came across as unnecessarily rude and, even if they were intended to be jokes, the humor definitely missed the landing. I'm all for a little sarcasm and having fun -- trust me, I can take a joke -- but there's a difference between being funny and making people wonder, "Wait... was that really necessary?" Thankfully, the event was for our kids, not for us, so we didn't let one interaction ruin the day. The kids had fun, the vendors were great, and everything else about the experience was positive. I'd definitely recommend checking out Second Saturday if you have kids or just want to support a cool community event. Hopefully, next time Matthew leaves the comedy routine at home and sticks to the helping. Overall: Great event, great activities, great vendors, and a lot of potential for an even better experience. Just one sour interaction kept it from getting that fifth star.

Trail Off Manmade…read morelake that was a former landfill site and was first conceived back in 1968 by the City of Mountain View to give it's residents a place to play by the water. It wasn't until 1983 when it was actually dedicated, but it's been a staple of the area since. The Good: *Watercraft rentals *Free to visit *Large parking lot *I guess there's a restaurant of some sort but didn't visit or check out. *Access to the SF Bay Trail that take you around various sloughs and to other parks, if one is into a longer hike. *Great birdwatching due to the proximity to The Bay. The Meh: *Very busy place and the parking lots full up fast--especially during the summer. *Be aware part of the Bay Trail does allow puppers, but the other part DOES NOT. So, be aware of signage. The Ugly: *No shade on the Slough trails *Lots of bugs, so wear your DEET. Conclusion: Great shoreland park with plenty of amenities, but it's popularity is it's biggest curse. That and the bugs. I recently visited for a stroll around the North Shore recreational area, and found it really fun and peaceful. The parking was free, easy, and there weren't too many people, though I suspect it could get popular during weekends or the summer due to the various activities to be had here. It's next to a local landmark, Rengstorff House, and a golf course and Shoreline Amphitheatre. Shoreline Parklands is mainly host to a large park and trail where you can walk, bike, and observe nature, and a large lake where you can sail on various boats. They also offer paddle boating, which could be a fun organizational offsite! There is virtually no shade if that matters to you, but the grounds are more or less flat. At the time, a company was renting out the boat house space for a party. The boat house also does equipment rentals (you can book online) and have tons of lockers. We saw huge groups of coots and geese, and a lot of squirrels with their own personalities. In fact, some squirrels looked like hybrid squirrels... It was definitely interesting observing the thriving nature in this area. We even witnessed some squirrels in heat.
