I have since also seen them at the Ex'pression College Battle of the Bands, which they won by a huge margin. To say that they rock is the understatement of the year. The front man, Khalil, brings a funky fun to his neo-soul croonings and does a mix of original material and fantastic covers. The rest of the band, Chris on the standup bass (how awesome is it to see a standup bass in street performance!), Pharoah on harmonicas and assorted percussion (the man has lung power like no other), and Mowgli on buckets (that's right, I said buckets) add a depth and creativity to Khalil's performances that take the band to a whole new level. If you haven't heard Mad Noise yet, you're missing out. Love, love, LOVE these guys!!!

You do not need reservation for this. You just have to struggle looking for parking. The price range of each small dish in the oxbow ranges between 12-30$ it's pretty fun walking around and trying a little bit of everything. If you are like me and is truffle crazy, make sure you reserve your tickets to the other events in the festival early because they always end up being sold out. When I heard that he'd be performing at The Greek Theater in Berkeley, I shopped for tickets and was pleasantly surprised how reasonable the tickets were and the location that I was able to get. Several months later, I got an email from Ticketmaster telling me that, given my seat category, I was invited to a pre-concert event. My friend and I left the City over 3.5 hours before the scheduled performance in hopes of catching this, but the infamous bridge commute traffic fouled those plans; we literally heard the last five minutes of it as we walked to the entrance. As expected, after the sun started coming down, the temperature came down right along with it and I was relieved to wear my jacket. The performance started with Alexandre Stewart, a solo male performer who was pretty good. He sang his own songs as well as a cover of a Louis Cipaldi song for a little over a half hour. About forty minutes later, Charlie took the stage and the screams and singing began. Much like my friend's experience in seeing John Fogerty, I was the one saying, "I know that song, I know that song, and that one"; I literally cannot name one song on his catalog. He started at 8:40 pm and played about an eighty-minute set of his popular songs. How popular? Let's just say, it was one of those concerts that could almost double as a sing-along with the audience echoing his words. My friend had to tell me the background of the song which highlights both his songwriting and vocal skills. This review would probably be more useful if this was an early stop on his North America tour but it was at the tail end. He will tour Asia this Fall so, if you're there at that time, maybe you can catch him there. He is certainly worth seeing.

The ironic part is she wasn't born here but has hella love for the place she now calls home. Oakland Unwrapped recently merged with OneCalifornia Foundation which also provides local community banking. The future is truly bright for this organization and ongoing event! I'm happy that the first to review named tons of the vendors present since I didn't get a chance to really roam the event. Not complaining, just that I was drawn to the aroma of my own tamales and wound up working the La Borinquena table while checking on the community information table with the groups I volunteer for: oldoaklandneighbors.org, 10000stepsoakland.org and the Oakland Merchant Leadership Forum omlf.org. I have to say first that the renovations at Sweet's Ballroom are coming along on a scale that is impressive to say the least. Steve S. and co are close to completion of the major work and I know as the word spreads there will be more events that I will need to attend there! I also need to give a massive shout out to the chicas de Yelp who all volunteered to work the event including Berna Diva, Pookie W, Jill K (who worked my food table with me) and Lupe M. I gotta give mad props to Consuelo J. for being the food coordinator for this too. There was also a Yelp table and I had the pleasure of meeting Cathrine O. and Natalie G. The event after it's initial rocky start, was an amazing snapshot of what Oakland has to offer. A diverse crowd of people, delicious food (there was an egg roll I'm still thinking about), drinks including Laotian beer from Champa Garden, lager from Linden Street Brewery and raspberry vodka sodas from Hanger One. Apparently, my dinner was mostly liquid that night, no wonder I had so much fun! The award presentation was an eye opener to how many different types of indie businesses are adding to the mix of commerce here. The night ended with a tight band that got folks moving and a chance for those of us working/volunteering to make Oakland an even BIGGER and more shiny jewel to chat about what's next. The positivity about Oakland is swelling and contagious. If you haven't caught it already... WATCH OUT, Oakland Pride is gonna to get you next!

Between the free drinks and food, to the great goodies different companies were handing out, everything was well organized and people were excited to be there. By far the highlights: tamales from Tina Tamale, Numi tea, and Champa Garden with there yummy sausages and beer. I would make the trip back to Oaklnad just to go to Champa Garden! My favorite above all was the band. It was called the BCO Band and they covered a ton of older songs. People were up out of there seats dancing and it really was a great finale to a fun night!
