We stopped in Cabin Coffee on our way out of town for a little pick me up for the 6.5 hour drive back to the Chicago area. Cabin Coffee is a cozy little western-themed cafe, with a wide variety of breakfast foods, pastries, and baked goods. They have a decent coffee menu as well, with alternative milks such as oat, coconut and almond for an extra 85 cents. The staff was extremely nice, and patient with not only my toddler, but my mother who orders slower than the speed of molasses. I appreciated that our order took some time to pull together, as that typically means your food is being made fresh, not reheated from frozen like a well-known overpriced coffee shop that we are all familiar with. I ordered a classic vanilla late with oat milk, and The Sundance bfast burrito. My mom ordered a large mocha something, The Longhorn burrito, two chocolate scones and my daughter ordered a chocolate chip cookie. The 7 items were only $36! Shocked. The latte was a little sweet, and took me awhile to finish, so if you don't like sweet, definitely tell them to hold off on a pump or two of syrup. Definitely a Clear Lake staple. When you're in town, you have to get Cabin Coffee Co. I walked from my Airbnb since this town is ultra walkable and sauntered in. The line was about 4-5 deep when I came in but the staff slings drinks real fast so you don't wait long. It's clear that everyone loves this place since it's so busy. There are so many options. They have tons of flavors, coffee options, cafe and bakery items, and also non dairy milks. I ended up going for a toffee crunch iced latte. Basic, but so good! I got a large which was about $6, and when you pay the system gives you an option to tip $1, $2, $5 or "other". My drink was out almost as soon as I sat down after ordering. I'd stop by again. perhaps I went on a really off day. I came in for lunch with the family and after perusing the menu was ready to order. 1) BLT | oh wait, there is no lettuce. this is lunch time. you make sandwiches. how are you already out of lettuce? never mind on the sandwich. 2) turkey and Monterey cheese sandwich | reminder to me no lettuce. fine. get the to go and when driving open the box to eat there is no cheese. so now a sandwich that is supposed to have bread, tomato, turkey and Monterey cheese only has meat, bread and tomato. the turkey is also processed tube meat. not even real turkey breast. 3) Soup of the day. their menu offers soup of the day. I ask "what is the soup of the day". response was "it is summer. it would not make sense to have a hot soup of the day. it doesn't make sense right?". my thought is why offer it then. the only bright side to the coffee shop is a clean bathroom and decent iced americano. if you are going in looking for lunch it is a joke. you are better off with a vending machine sandwich. This is a great drive through, especially if you are in the south part of town. Ordered a decaf coffee and a skim caramel latte. The decaf coffee was nice and hot, and the flavor was satisfying. The skim caramel latte was not as hot as I'd have liked, but the flavor was rich and yummy. Everything is made as you wait, so the line can move a bit slow, but they do a good job trying to expedite you through. There is a heck of a bump at the out drive from drive through to the side street, so be cautious. read more

I spent a few hours working here while my boyfriend warmed up for the cycling race one Saturday morning. The shop was bustling with cyclists and locals alike. I love that it had the small town vibe yet still was able to execute tasty bebidas. Along with my drink, I opted for the blueberry bagel as recommended to me by the woman behind the counter. Holy jamoly, they're generous with the cream cheese! (no complaints here) The vibe of the establishment is very bears, fireplace, cabin, Colorado, woodland. It somehow works despite the fact that it's located in a lake town in northern Iowa. I guess it's the proximity to Minnesota? Lastly, friendly service, free and easy wifi and clean bathrooms. I'm from Kansas City, but while traveling to northern Iowa to visit family, we found Cabin Coffee along our route and decided to give it a try. The coffee shop was clean and welcoming, with a cabin/forest/wilderness vibe. The baristas were nice and suggested I try the seasonal, white chocolate peppermint mocha. It was really good, not too sweet, with a good espresso flavor, while still having the seasonal aroma for a good drink. Disappointing coffee. My tumbleweed inexplicably tasted like grits, or popcorn, buttered corn...but not coffee. My husband got the turtle mocha, which was even more disappointing. Little coffee bar for sandwiches this coffee shop is quaint and well appointed. The chipotle veggie wrap that I ordered was full of fresh things and well seasons. Their menu is not accurate and they were out of things without noting it on the menu which made ordering more difficult than necessary. I stopped on my way home from the Twin cities. I needed lunch, sounds like a cute little place. I was correct, it is the cutest little coffee shop. Just be happy and have fun is the motto. I'm not a coffee drinker, but I ordered a chicken salad sandwich. it came with chips and a pickle spear. the sandwich was a croissant with lettuce and tomato. the chips I believe were a cracked pepper flavor. so if you don't like spice, you might inquire about the chip flavor before eating them. the sandwich was good, the croissant was soft. The staff was friendly and polite, I was served quickly. The bathroom was very nice, real paper towels, as you can tell this is important to me, I want to dry my hands and not on my jeans. I'm all about going green, but I want to dry my hands on a paper towel. Any way, go to Cabin Coffee, even if you don't drink coffee. I've made this a 3-4 visit per week stop since 2005 and I've never been disappointed. The decor is longhorns, cowboy hat, lariats, and lots of wood, but don't let the Western motif scare you. Did I mention the staff? I've never seen a frown. They know my children's names. They dress up for Halloween and other special, local events. And they are creative enough to find the right drink if you're undecided. It's sometimes hard to find a "good" coffeehouse when you are out on the road. There are all of the chain places (Starbucks, Caribou, Dunn Bros., etc.) out there and, while you typically know what you're getting, they just don't do much than the bare minimum to sate their customers. They take your order, take your money and make you an undersized/overpriced drink and hurry you out the door. Okay, given they have comfortable tables and Wi-Fi in most of their locations, maybe "rush" you out isn't the right term. Let's just say that they are commercialized and are trying to get customers in and out in a timely manner. I passed up a Caribou in Albert Lea on my way back to Central Iowa a couple of weeks ago, remembering that there was a local coffee shop in Clear Lake, just 25 minutes down I-35 from where I was. Worth the wait in my opinion and sometimes travelers just like to stop, sit and relax and sip a nice hot coffee. I neared the exit and saw the "Cabin Coffee Company" sign and knew this was where I was going to stop. Now if you don't want to venture off of I-35, this probably isn't the place for you, though it isn't a long drive (less than 5 minutes), but it is worth the detour to experience this place, located at 303 Main Ave in Downtown Clear Lake, about one block from the lake. The décor was unique, as one would expect from a private coffeehouse. A nice handwritten menu board with your typical coffeehouse menu (lots of varieties and flavors of coffee drinks, both hot and cold, sandwiches, deserts, rolls, soft drinks, etc.). I hesitate to use the term "western" to describe the theme, but that's about as close as I can describe it. The logo is present everywhere (it looks like an old western sheriff's badge) including on the top of the coffee drinks (see photos that other Yelpers have posted here). I ordered a simple caramel latte with an extra shot of espresso and it was made to perfection by a very friendly barista. She was polite, courteous and makes a GOOD coffee drink! I took my drink and sat down by the lake and slowly sipped it while enjoying the beauty of this quint little summer town. This was my first time actually going into the town of Clear Lake after passing by it a billion times on the interstate. It was well worth it just to find this little gem of a coffeehouse. Cabin Coffee Company does it right. Great service, excellent coffee, a nicely sized menu and lots of customers. It signifies that they are doing something right here. Please take the time next time you are in the mood for some REAL coffee and pull of I-35 and venture into Downtown Clear Lake. Look for Cabin Coffee Company and you won't be disappointed! read more
