I just moved across the country, but when I lived in Maplewood I would eat here (or order delivery from here) pretty regularly. It's a great little Mexican restaurant with lots of choices, including several vegetarian options which I admire. Ate at CC's again last night. Still very good, but gf's fish tacos were just ok (although the actual fish inside was very good), they were rolled up like enchiladas and otherwise kinda plain. The place was very loud, despite being only half full... It's alway like that because of the acoustics. Couldn't make eye contact w/ a server when we wanted to pay, so had to wait at least an extra 15 min for that. read more

Very authentic Mexican fare. Aguacante Relleno is superb as others have mentioned. My wife's fajitas and my chicken were flavorful and light. It's a mecca for kids. Would highly recommend. read more

Meh pretty much sums it up. in my opinion it's exactly average. Not bad but not great. It does have a fun atmosphere though.

My husband and I love Cactus Charly! Very good Mexican food with a reasonable price. We tried 70% of the entrée menu and like most of them. I really enjoy the tongue taco, something special for a change. Fajitas with skirt steak is one of my favorite too. Unlike other Mexican places I have been too, they actually have lots of flavors! Cactus Charley has excellent appetizers, food, drinks, and service! While you wait for your entree, they start you off with complimentary chips and salsa, and the salsa is really fantastic. They also have a great selection of Mexican sodas, including Mexican coke. The entrees taste great and can range from $9 to $18. And the wait staff has always been very courteous and efficient in what they do. I'm always glad to leave them a good tip. read more

I have eaten at Cactus Charly twice now and had it delivered once. All times, the food was delicious! After reading reviews, I was concerned with the delivery, but i was pleased to find that it traveled perfectly. Whats better than home delivery?! Was there Sunday. Had a soup and the pork enchilada special. They were both very good. I was served quickly. It was relative quiet when I got there, but did get louder when two more families got there. Will probably go there again. read more

We went here on a Friday night, which might have been our first mistake. It was increadibly busy and it seemed like the service staff was ill equipped to handle the Friday dinner rush. It was a fifteen minute wait to be seated. I don't think this was a strike against them in and of itself (we were initially pleased to see it was so busy), but we were then seated at a table by the kitchen doors and spent the rest of our meal dodging hot plates of food and such as the wait staff came out with them. I got the impression they did not have particular people assigned to specific tables or areas. Every time someone stopped by our table (which took effort--they seemed determined to ignore us and get right into the kitchen as fast as possible) it was a different person. Our aps showed up with our entree. Getting someone to so much as refill my water glass required me to get up and grab members of the wait staff, who were inclined to charge right past me while holding the water carafe! The food was fine, but not fantastic, and definately not worth the chaotic service. Our "regular" for this kind of Mexican fare is Toro Loco in South Orange, and I don't see that changing, frankly, although I might consider ordering delivery or take-out given that I live closer to Maplewood. Be aware that this place is BYOB, which is not immediately clear given that they often have specials and such out on liquor branded chalk boards (thus leading one to expect one could, say, order said beverage there--you can't, but there's a liquor store right across the street.) read more

I finally made it to Cactus Charly's and am so happy I did. The green mole sauce was amazing. Great refried beans and wonderful rice. Salsa and chips very tasty and a little spicy - just the way I like it. Fun environment with Mexican-themed paintings. And there is parking nearby. read more

We moved to NJ about 5 months ago from Texas and have been missing Mexican food. There are so many so called Mexican restaurants around that are really south American food and seasonings. I was pleasantly surprised by the food at Cactus Charly. Even though it isn't the best Mexican I have had, it is still good. I had a combination plate. The chimichanga was good, although not a traditional one, the flavor was still right on. The chile relleno was very flavorful, a bit spicy but good. The burrito was more like a taco, but it was ok. The salsa and chips were ok, the salsa tasted a little bland, but passed as a salsa. We ordered a queso fundido with chorizo, authentic tasting, but the tortillas that came with it were not warm enough, i think they warm them in microwave. Overall, I plan on coming back. read more

Came for a quick lunch. One other customer already eating. Asked waiter if the ala cart 3 tacos were the same as the two taco plate with rice and beans. Hey said yes. Ordered the 3, sans cilantro... As per the menu the plate has crispy tacos with cheese and tomato, onion, cilantro. What i received 18 minutes later was entirely different. It was 3 miniature soft tacos with tiny bits of gristle like meat and a scattering of onion. No flavor at all. Honestly a really sad second visit... Which should have not happened, that is, when waiter said "oh great" because i only ordered tacos in his empty restaurant and then took 18 minutes too get them. Guess I'll write a review about my first visit shortly. I'd waited to do so by giving them this second chance, but no need to hold back. read more

Dont waste your time or money. Ordered the steak with beans and rice. The steak must have been frozen as trying to eat it is impossible. Looks and tastes like the steak was cooked in the microwave. $17.00 for a hockey puck, no thanks.
