This is a cute cafe grumpy location. I ordered a match latte, hot chocolate and chocolate croissant and a apple puff pastry tart. It was nice and clean inside and they have a service hoatd to hang up any news. The staff was friendly and were able to give my items quickly. The hot chocolate was yummy, the matcha latte was a little powdery still. The pastries were nice and flaky and the apple tart was so fresh. Inhave to get the pastries again next time. read more

I've stopped by Cafe Grumpy a few times out of convenience. Unfortunately, the coffee (americano, peppermint mocha) was too acidic for my liking and the flavored drink was watery and not very tasty at all. I'm a big cat lady so anything feline- related, count me in. I was looking for Cafe Grumpy and walked right by it, twice. To be fair I am 5'0 so I had to raise my head to look around. The sign is a horizontally hanging grumpy cat face so look for that. It's small in here! There's not much seating and this wouldn't be the best place to meet a friend. I felt cramped in here even though there were only 4 customers. The iced coffee was $4. That's the most I've paid for a small iced in the neighborhood. On the same block a few doors down, it's $3.25. It sounds finicky but I'm on a teacher's salary so work with me here. To top it off, the coffee was okay. It wasn't bad but I'm not running back anytime soon. Maybe I got the bottom of the batch. I feel like if your main product is a diuretic, you should have a plan for that. Like, if customers come and buy a coffee, it would be nice to have a restroom. Or at least put a sign on the front door saying "no restroom for customers." Or if don't have a restroom, make an arrangement with a neighboring business that does, which they haven't done either. But actually the sad thing is that they do have one but they don't let customers use it. We made the mistake of just walking in here without checking any reviews beforehand, assuming we could order coffees, drink them, hang out a while, use the restroom... you know, all the normal things that people do at cafes. After we had paid for our coffees we asked about the restroom and they first said there wasn't one, then said there was one but it was for employees only, and that they didn't have any arrangements with local places, and didn't know of any public restrooms. Yeah, but if we're paying customers in your cafe and you have one and you won't let us use it? That goes beyond being grumpy, that's just rude. Definitely won't be coming back here. BTW there's also no WiFi, and only one table, so I guess they mostly do take out business. read more

I live in the neighborhood and came here for the first time this evening. Let me start by saying, "WHY DID I NOT COME HERE SOONER?!?!?!" Excellent coffee. Lately, I have been turned off by coffee, and have been opting for tea. Vegan cookie options were a plus (I didn't have luck with the cookie that I tried). Seems really clean, and their marketing strategy is pretty cool. Friendly, down to earth staff. CONS: Do not have the salted chocolate chip vegan cookie. I am a coffee addict, and I love small coffee shops. So when I took a trip to NYC with my friends, I was put in charge of getting us good coffee. I looked up near by coffee shops and Cafe Grumpy had a cute slogan (I also love cats) and many good reviews. When we arrived there, the place was small and packed, not much room for sitting and enjoying your coffee. The staff was super friendly and very chatty, which I loved. Good coffee shops have two things: Good coffee and good company, and Cafe Grumpy did have the good company part down. As for the coffee, it wasn't the best I've ever had, but my friends enjoyed their lattes and cookies. When I went, they said they don't heat up any pastries, so that was a downer. The lack of room was also a downer cause it was cold and rainy out and when you go to a coffee shop, you're looking for a warm and cozy atmosphere. I got a surprisingly good flat white, and because it's a coffee shop that gets its four stars, although, as I'll explain, the ambience is nonexistent. They were friendly enough, and made my drink in my travel mug. It's a very small and bare space. The no laptop policy is sort of annoying--there was literally no one else there and I wanted a place to sit and read on a screen and I couldn't. I'd pretty much just consider this place a takeout spot, but for that the coffee is good. There's no food. The menu has chai. The prices seemed unfortunately normal, even a bit less than at least one other place I've been within a few blocks, although I got a seasonal coffee drink there, so that might have accounted for at least part of the price difference. I'm a fan of the Grumpy chain of coffee shops. I got really excited when one opened near my job (ironically replacing a Starbucks). Unlike its more slick, Manhattan counterparts, this Grumpy is located in a tiny store front in Park Slope. It can seat about maybe ten to twelve people (tops). When I entered, they had a chalkboard with an impressive selection of coffees from Guatemala, Ethiopia and more. The bags of beans on a shelf above that sign all had nice descriptions of the coffee's flavor, and I was very tempted by the Guatemala - only to find out they weren't serving it that day (this was ascribed to a machine that was broken). Instead, I wound up having the Ethiopia. This not a huge loss. The coffee was, as expected, tasty with a nice tang and deep flavor. The fixings bar had everything you'll need from raw sugar to soy milk. The staff was friendly and a bit apologetic that they couldn't give me the flavor I wanted, but hey, there are bigger things to worry about in life so I just told them not to worry about it. I recently stayed nearby in South Slope and really liked this little coffee shop! I came here twice during my trip and had the vanilla honey oat latte each time. While my latte was delicious, I felt that $6 for a twelve-ounce drink was a bit steep. There is only one table in the store, so be aware if you are looking to hang out, you might have to go elsewhere if there is no room. I was in the neighborhood searching for good coffee and stumbled upon this place. I love the location in Chelsea and was hesitant to go in because maybe it wouldn't be as good. The service was quick. I came 2x in one day . The place was small but I always found a place to sit on Tuesday in the afternoon and evening. Baristas are cool. I thought it was pretty sweet that while a barista waited for customers he was reading a book. I got a mocha with 2 different baristas on the same day and the taste was consistent. There's something amazingly perfect about cafe grumpy's coffee and I'm not sure what it is... I did notice it said they use Swiss water for their coffee beans. Yeah, the barista was very grumpy! I probably would be too, if I had to do so much work to make 1 freaking cup of coffee! I would give it 5 stars, but the grumpiness of the barista knocks it down a star. The coffee was awesome. I ordered some coffee which was going to be made through a pour over filter. That's the best way to make coffee (outside of a coffee press). i love how they grind each batch of coffee beans right before brewing my coffee. They used hot water to heat up the pour over device. They pre wet the filter. I would have preferred a gold filter to get all of the oils in my coffee, but I guess disposable paper is easier to clean and is more sanitary. It took forever to get my coffee, but hey, if you saw what they do to make it, you'll understand. If you love coffee (I mean true coffee - not those fake milkshakes in disguise from Starbucks), then this is your place. You'll walk in grumpy, but leave happy! read more

My friend the customer is the sweetest person and to watch him be verbally abused by the counter person was hard to watch. If you're looking for a place to grab a coffee on-the-go, consider this place. Not a whole lot of seating (maybe a few bar stools?) so not a great option if you're looking to meet up with a friend, work, etc. That said, they've got pretty decent options in terms of coffee. They're one of the few places in the vicinity that know how to make a good pour-over (if that's your style) and they've also got a nice cold brew (although only 1 medium-sized plastic cup for it). I also love their coffee beans and often buy from them for my own pour-over coffee at home. Baked goods... not anything to write home about. I'd pass and grab something somewhere else. read more

My daughters both grew up in this place. When we first moved to Park Slope in 2014, and our plates in utensils had not arrived yet and this was our morning sustenance. Our first daughter was seven months old. Eventually we got set up and this became our Saturday and Sunday morning stop, and the place where we buy our beans. When my daughter learned to speak, at some point she started pointing at the Grumpy logos (a face frowning) and shouting "daddy!" She "bought" me a Grumpy mug to use at work (made mama buy it). Anyway the beans are superb -- I've done Peets and Blue Bottle (back when they were at an Oakland farmer's market) and tried Stumptown Intelligentsia etc but I prefer Grumpy coffee. Stunningly delicious, ethically sourced and NEVER overroasted -- the beans themselves are somewhat blonde actually. Also they can grind them for you if your significant other (*cough*) insists that Brooklyn kitchens are too tight for burr grinders. And since they are sold 12 oz at a time this isn't too much of a sacrilege. When I'm not buying beans, I tend to do straight coffee rather than the espresso drinks (brewed or pourover are both excellent) but my wife is a big fan of the matcha latte (they'll do it with oat milk) and I do enjoy the flat white. The espresso is very competently pulled. The croissants are actually lovely, all too rare in a cafe environment. That staff are also lovely. There's been turnover in the four years we've been going, but less than you'd expect. We think of them almost as friends. It's a great place to sit and get a feel for the neighborhood -- half of South Slope is coming through this place on any given weekend day. Seating is limited BUT don't forget the front table is communal (just grab a seat!) (with free NY Times and NY Post) AND don't miss the four bar stools in back which as an added bonus are right near the barista. read more

This used to be one of my favorite spots for coffee. But the horrific employee who lectured me for trading her a $5 for 4 $1 from the tip jar AFTER I ASKED was bad enough. When she then got on her high horse after I had said "can I trade you this five for four dollars" and pointed to the tip jar, I got upset. When she lectured me, rather than apologizing for the misunderstanding, I was royally pissed. When she then held onto my remaining change and got upset when I asked for it back, I was livid. So I demanded my tip back. Then the guy working the bar pours out my drink and tells me to get out. I've been coming here for years, I always tip, I've had a great relationship with the old baristas, but these new ones are awful. Go somewhere else. read more
