Try to smile," I replied to my aggro companion. It was cold, misty, and just plain miserable until that one cup of coffee made us leave Park Slope smiling ear to ear. This is not your typical over-roasted cup of java. The coffees are complex, so sophisticated that my tastebuds felt bitch-slapped by a white leather glove from Hermès. Those that like their coffee black will love this place. As a lady who is known to love her coffee with a lot of creme and sugar, for once I held off on any modifications to my perfect cup of instant consciousness. The mochas are just heavenly, yet the masala chai wasn't nearly as spicy as I remember it from my grandmother's kitchen. Don't expect lightning speed service. Every cup is made to order, and every latte made into a work of edible art. It is also the barista's sign of approval that it passed quality control and is ready for consumption. If you hate waiting, just grab a pack of their $15 beans and get blazed by its awesomeness at your own speed en su casa. Cafe novelists take heed: bring your own wi-fi source since they do not provide it at this location. If you cannot get a seat in their utterly crammed quarters, walk up two blocks and enjoy your cup by a playground with chess tables in Prospect Park. No Wi-Fi, lack of seating, and pricey limited menu should have logically thrown off a couple of stars. This review is strictly for the coffee. Come here for the coffee. Stop reading and go. Now. You aren't going to find fresher, higher quality coffee than Grumpy's in this neighborhood. The bean varietal that I chose was the Finca Las Margaritas y Anexos from Amatitlán, Guatemala, which was described as "subtle & sweet, creamy chocolate notes, lemon brightness, lingering caramel finish." The preparation of each coffee order is almost a show, as the decidedly ungrumpy baristas freshly grind the beans for each cup then use the pour-over method to brew it. My 16 oz cup did not disappoint--it was piping hot, strong, and full of nuanced flavors. The baked goods include a variety of muffins from Blue Sky Bakery, croissants, pain au chocolat, and a tempting banana chocolate chip bread. The space was immaculate. Although I would probably not come here to read, I will be adding Grumpy to my daily routine. read more

It isn't often that I have a hard time rating a coffee shop. I can usually tell if it's good or if it's terrible. The Café Grumpy outpost in Park Slope confuses me. While it is the best cup of coffee that is closest to me, it is not the best cup of coffee in all of New York City. For starters, the service is rarely consistent. Some of the employees are very nice. Others act as though smiles are illegal and punishable by death. I get it. Hipsters. But if you're going to be a hipster, be nice when you're at work. You can be a douche bag when you're outside of your workplace. Sorry about it. Secondly, the coffee isn't always very good. What's ironic is that the less-than-nice baristas make a pretty darn good cup of coffee. Well, in actuality, a cappuccino. That's my usual go to drink. The nicer baristas make an okay cup. Finally, the pastry selection isn't always fresh. Are you all getting my drift? Consistency is very important to any food establishment. And this place is, unfortunately, lacking. Other reviewers want to harp about the fact that it is a small space. But I have to kindly remind them that this is New York...and space is very limited here. Do I still go here often? Absolutely. As I said before, it's the best that I can get near my neighborhood. But it's not phenomenal. This is actually quite sad considering Cafe Grumpy has been voted one of the best coffee shops in the world. I guess I'll have to try another location. read more

I came into just looking for a cup of coffee and a baked good. But when I came in here there were no more baked goods! They didn't have a food menu either. I ended up ordering a skim latte and I'm so happy that I ordered it! It was delicious! My favorite latte is usually a Stumptown one but that was amazing! Pricey yes but not the most expensive latte I've paid for in the Slope (or NYC for that matter). They have a bench outside, a large table up front and some seating in the back. The space is large but the barista/counter area takes up a lot of room. It wasn't designed all that well for people to stay and sit. Moreover, there was a sign that laptops were not allowed. Other than that, great space with art on the walls, lining it all the way to the back. They also sell their coffee beans as well. read more

"I wanna pay nine dollars for a cup of coffee today." If you ever have that thought then come to this shop. It's the coffee snob's coffee bar. Price is pretty fair for most cups (some of the roasts are very delicate and rare) and should not be compared to the price of coffee from other places. Their equipment and technique reminds me of the Intelligentsia shop in Chicago and those are the snootiest of the snoots. The technique and care in preparing the coffee here is pretty time and labor intensive for one cup and not at all like regular drip machine coffee from starbucks or another café. I don't recommend going here often. Just once in a while when you need something unique. Leave your laptop at home too. This isn't a hangout-type place. read more

Wow, even skimming the other reviews here made me feel inadequate to say anything. Because I don't know the intricacies of this particular branch's chain of production of its famous local roasts. I don't know about the machines or the techniques they use. I'm the girl who thinks coins should be abolished, and so saves hers in a tube sock until enough is gathered to splurge on a good coffee, then goes here because my Australian roommate once told me that Cafe Grumpy is Australian owned and makes killer "flat whites," which I soon found out firsthand is a smaller, stronger version of a latte, with the clean flavor of milk foam but the punch of an espresso and none of the excess foam that leaves you feeling full of hot air, if you catch my drift. Of course, I first came here when I was so broke that my ATM card had just been rejected at the corner grocery, and so that made shaking a bunch of coins out onto the counter for a treat ever more poignant and memorable. That day, I really brought out the reserves, and was able to get a flat white AND a cheddar dill biscuit, which rang in at about 8 bones total. Like a dog that wants to chew on a bone and lick its wounds in privacy, I took my purchases to the very end of the tiny and happily vacant seating area and got to work savoring it. The staff smiled at me and stayed cool as I filled up a little cup with the milk meant for people's coffees. As the caffeine-and-cheese delivered euphoria began to set in, I had to fight the urge to tell these baristas my whole SOB story or ask them how they pulled of working at a chill place like this and still paying rent or otherwise befriending or bothering them. In a way, I felt lonelier and like more of an outcast than ever, but on the other hand, I felt cradled by my 8 dollars in delicious biscuit and bean. So I say that's 8 dollars well spent. Also, their iced mint tea is nonpareil in the summer. Forget the part of it being four dollars; it beats the crap out of a Mr. Softee cone, anyhow. read more

BUT, they started making their pastries in-house and reduced the size so dramatically that it's almost insulting. No, it actually IS insulting. Expecting customers to pay so much for so little scone or shortbread or muffin or whatever is obnoxious. The pastries are seriously that small. The girl handling my order had a small half healed wound on her finger. The scab still fresh. Smh. I don't care if one thinks the boiling water added to my tea would "sterilize" bacteria. UPDATED MY REVIEW - downgraded form 4 stars to 3, tried to keep going back but the grumps really damper my day. I enjoy the coffee but it's too expensive to not come with friendly service. The girl serving me acted like she was reading from a script - Hi, what can I get for you, awesome, thanks. Robot. I wanted to conduct an experiment, so I put a dollar in the tip jar to see if it would elicit a real emotion from her. She continued to stare at me blankly while she ate snacks from under the counter, ignoring the fact I just gave her a tip. I wanted to reach in and take it back, but science requires sacrifice. My last dollar to this particular store. I'm open to trying other Grumpy locations, but not Park Slope. Original review - I used to frequent the LES grumpy, which always had top notch staff and quality product - 5 stars hands down best coffee in town. Park Slope, however, is hindered by a few actually grumpy staff with less care for the craft. If you're looking for a super-sized generic coffee try Starbucks. I often see people complain about the cup sizes, but we're talking a whole other world here - cheap quantity vs. quality, and Grumpy is good. Pros - cant beat the grumpy product. Don't be fooled by the fact you can't get a supersized cup, this is about pure quality. Biscuits and scones are incredible. Cons - (this is for Park Slope only, LES is great and haven't been to other locations yet) one early morning rush the barista seemed to be intentionally slow, which for early morning coffee is the exact opposite of what's expected. Came here to get a little work done because it was listed as one of the best cafes to work in. Sadly, I got kicked out as there is a "no laptop" policy. The three sips of coffee I managed to get down, pre-boot, was pretty good. Had the place been packed, I would have understood; however, I was the only customer in the place, and I didn't see a "no laptop" sign. The guy who worked there was as nice as possible about the whole thing, but the owner should really post a better sign. Or get the pickle out of his ass. Went across the street to Naidre's where the coffee was equally good--and cheaper! Not only was I able to use my laptop, but they had free Wifi, too! When this place is at its best it's pretty great. Unfortunately not all the baristas are as up to snuff as others. Somedays I get a great shot of their heartbreaker blend: sweet, spicy and full bodied. Others it's thin and bitter. I know it's likely not the fault of the bean but they're a good testament to the fact that it's also who's behind the grinder and espresso machine that matters. Having a respectable product and nice gear doesn't always cut it. As far as the service, again, sometimes it's super friendly...other times not so much. This is also more of a grab a coffee to go place as there is very little seating. Unfortunate again as their coffee tastes much better out of a ceramic cup than to-go paper. As the most expensive place in Park Slope I would expect a bit more consistancy out of the people at Grumpy's making their drinks. When they're on though, it's a pretty nice cup. read more

I have been accused of being a snob, an elitist, a pretentious jerk, a condescending a-hole... you get the idea. No place has ever made me feel like a complete failure at being all of these things like Cafe Grumpy. I generally like a little snobbery, but clearly my coffee appreciation is just not honed yet. Being that I value my identity as a pompous ass, I will be diligently working on developing my Clover coffee palate. I honestly didn't particularly enjoy the El Salvador roast I had - it was bitter to the point of being sour, especially after I made the mistake of adding soy milk. What kind of a purist dilutes coffee with soy milk you ask? I learned my lesson. I recommend reading the roast descriptions and ordering with confidence - these baristas feed on the look of intimidation in your eyes. read more

I've been told that New York is known to have some of the worst coffee... but after having coffee at Cafe Grumpy, my mood improved, dramatically. Great coffee. Each cup made to its own level of perfection. So good there is no need for sugar or cream. Comparable to Blue Bottle in California. I recommend the Columbian or Brazilian coffee - yum. This was our first coffee stop on a recent visit to New York. We had three pour overs while here, one was tasty and the other two tasted a bit watered down. Very cute space, one big table and a bar in the back. There was a very small seating area outside. I don't know if it's baristas in New York, or just people in general, but so many of the people working in the cafes we stopped at on our visit just seemed miserable. One of the girls working here was pretty friendly, the other made it seem like we were inconveniencing her and forgot about our second coffee. I'd be interested in trying their espresso and giving the other coffee options a shot. read more

My, God, I love the Park Slope Grumpy. Whoever selects and roasts does a great job. I buy whole bean here quite often and I'm never disappointed. The baristas are excellent, as well. They seem to rotate between this and the other locations, so I'm never quite sure who will be there. I do miss the Clovers, but they really have no control over the lack of spare parts. They have set up a brew bar around Coava cones. These have a distinct taste, closer to a press pot than a typical drip. Stop in for an espresso, then grab a drip to go and walk around the neighborhood. Great, great stuff. read more

This place is basically just an espresso bar, but the espresso is off the chain. I've had routinely mind expanding Americanos here. You'd have to travel pretty far to get better. I like the limited seating and the no laptops rule because it's sometimes unnerving to walk into a coffee shop and be greeted by a mass of glazed over young people dug into Macbook foxholes. When I first heard of it I thought Cafe Grumpy was a new coffee concept run exclusively by assholes (which could be kind of interesting) but the people are pretty friendly. Love love love this place. As a fresh transplant from Seattle, I was "warned" that it might be a challenge to find coffee that could compete. Well thankfully that couldn't be further from the truth! Cafe Grumpy has fantastic roasts and even better, they prepare their coffee with a slow drip/pour over which retains the maximum amount of flavour. Pastries are all heavenly here as well - get their early enough and scoop up a "heartbreaker espresso" macaron with FRESH raspberries sandwiched between the espresso ganache filling. Or you can't go wrong with an espresso biscotti! Considering this is on my walk to the F train to work everyday, I suspect I'll become a regular in no time. read more

Depending on the size of that paycheck (assuming you have one), Cafe Grumpy may make you happy, and your wallet cry. Go for their specialty coffee priced at $7. No, no, it's not one of those caramel, frufru drinks. It's straight joe. An employee told me they have to charge that much based on how much they buy it for, then backed it up with a rational explanation that I won't try to reiterate. The employees know coffee, and their machinery is top-notch. Was it worth $7? Hard to say. They have other blends for $3-4 that are excellent, but live a little, eh? One of the early artisanal coffee shops in New York City, and one of the first local roasters. The Park Slope location, located in quieter South Slope, is one of the newer branches of Cafe Grumpy, which is based in Greenpoint. Just a spare, narrow corridor dominated by the staff counter and expresso bar, with a few seats at the window and several at the bar near the back. Their space is too small for lingering, hence a no lap-top policy, nor free wi-fi. Food also not available, as the focus is strictly on coffee. Adding these characteristics together, coffee here becomes a more intimate experience, with less to distract from it. Based on one visit to enjoy a morning cortado and cappuccino, theirs are very good, solid artisanal expresso drinks. There are also pourover, cold brew, and teas. Come for a cup to go, or take a few minutes to enjoy at the counter. read more

When I first saw Cafe Grumpy, I had no idea what it was. There's no sign outside -- just a, well, grumpy frowny face. When I found out it was coffee, I wanted to love this place. I honestly love an aloof coffee establishment with damn fine beans. But this place was just...meh. The barista grumpily informed me that she would not ice my espresso without putting water in it. Why? It's a grumpy cafe. The espresso was very citric in a weird way, and the coffee I tasted (the Kenya, I think) was just pretty regular. On the plus side, they have an awesome Clover machine. I'll go back and try some other roasts, but only when I have the urge to spend a lot. read more

Great Vanilla Honey oat latte!! The honey and touch of cinnamon made this an extremely delicious experience.

I got the mocha and a cheddar chive biscuit. Both were very good and worth coming back for. The mocha was well blended no chocolate residue and the chive had a nice spice kick. This is my "home" location and where I was first informed about the "Scavenger Hunt" challenge-you get a card for all 7 locations and upon completion you get a bag of beans, mug and tote bag. You can also get your regular punch card punched on these visits. In order I went to : Park Slope Greenpoint Nolita Lower East Side Fashion District Chelsea Grand Central Terminal On a visit here I had a free coffee after completing my quest and the espresso tasted kind of burnt to me. The milk was foamed pretty perfectly. This is not the largest location but sometimes I hang out by the bar towards the back. They have interesting art/photography displayed. One thing I will say is I am giving a 4 star review but that is for my overall enthusiasm of this brand vs others. The weakest thing about all Grumpy locations are the baked goods. I just can't get down with them. They always taste kind of dry and I always want them to be better than they are. read more

But too much choice is a form of oppression isn't it? It's like five types of beans to choose from, but a small coffee is like $48. For the record, the best coffee shops in south park slope, in descending order are: South Side Coffee, Parco, the place two doors down from parco, Grumpy, the place across the street from grumpy.
