First visit to this local Hamtramck coffee shop. I love to see how this house has been converted into a cafe. The coffee was very good. I also had a cheese danish. I don't think it was made on site, but it was very good. They had the normal assortment of cafe type foods. Great place to get some work done. Or, read a book. Multiple rooms with different seating. I loved the jazz playing in the background. The service was friendly.

The last time I visited Cafe 1923 was in 2006. I was surprised to see that 16 years later, this coffee shop still looks pretty much the same, making me feel nostalgic. It's a great place to get some work done, and the decor is fabulous. Today, I ordered the Chai Latte, Caramel Coffee, and French Vanilla Latte. All three tasted great!

What a gem! Loved this historical coffee shop inside this old general store. From the scale to the wood it is a beauty. The Barista was wonderful, did catch his name but he was so personable and informative ...just great place with service, ambiance and Chai tea was spot on!

I love working from this cafe! They have a decent amount of seating, never too busy or load, lots of outlets, and reallyyyy good coffee. It's definitely on the sweeter side though, so maybe ask for less pumps of flavor or something if you don't have a big sweet tooth. I get the snickers latte, highly recommend, but a little too sweet admittedly. The interior aesthetic in the second half of the cafe is really cool too, with a library. I only took a video so apologies for the blurry picture, but should give an idea of the space.

Went here for lunch with a coworker. They have a nice selection of snacks and lunch food. I had the lentil stew made by the local Buddhist temple down the street and it was hearty and delicious! The cappuccino was pretty good too.

A nice coffee place to grab a cup of coffee and study. They close early on Sunday which is a downer.

Cafe 1923 is my favorite coffee shop. Their coffee is just simply the best. I like the laid back atmosphere.

I'd definitely recommend making a reservation if you're going at a busier time. The service was fast and friendly, I had an overall very good experience! The peanut stewed spinach really caught my eye, so I knew I'd go for a dish with that included. I ended up going for the Nybani with half spiced rice and half coconut rice, with added spicy sauce. I thought it was really good! The beef was super rich and tender, both rices were good but i preferred the coconut rice after adding the spicy sauce. The peanut stewed spinach was very yummy, but I'm glad it came on a dish with a wide array of flavors. Would definitely recommend giving this spot a try if you're visiting town or local to Detroit!

The restaurant is beautiful, and the menu is fantastic - we wanted everything. Ultimately, we decided to share the vegan sambusas (my mom is vegan, and we really appreciated how vegan friendly the menu is), which were delicious. Then, between the three of us, we tried: Nyumbani (tender beef, slow-simmered in ripened tomato sauce; served with fried plantains, peanut-stewed spinach, and rice); Samaki (crisp flash-fried fish garnished with tangy sauteed onions; served with fresh corn salad, fried plantains, and stewed yellow beans; and Intore (fragrant eggplant stew served with peanut-stewed spinach or savory yellow beans, and rice). We also shared a fizzy passionfruit juice (carbonated house-made passionfruit juice) and Tamu (sweet dessert pudding made from creamy avocados and tangy passion fruit, garnished with chia seeds). Of everything we ate, my only minor complaint is that the beef wasn't very tender. The Samaki (those onions on that perfectly pan-fried fish), the vegan sambusas, the spiced rice pilau, the Tamu, and the fizzy passionfruit juice were all some of my favorite bites of food from our whole long weekend in Detroit. The service could have been a bit more attentive (we waited a little bit to be welcomed and had to get our server's attention to put in some dessert and get our check when the meal was going a little long), but it was a friendly spot in addition to the beautiful space and delicious food. Overall, Baobab Fare was one of our favorite restaurants over our long weekend in Detroit. I know all three of us (vegan and non-vegans) would love to return. If you love East African food - or if you don't know much about it and want to try it - Baobab Fare is a great option for any meal!
