Visited for the 1st time September 2021. My husband and I tried this place for brunch on Saturday. I made the reservation for an outside seat a week in advance. We decided to pick from the prix fix brunch menu. I enjoyed the lemonade rose for the 1st & 3rd course. The 2nd course, I chose the Garden Truffle Flatbread. It was enough for 2, so I was lucky enough to enjoy some later at home. Highly recommend the flatbread. My husband had the deviled eggs, shrimp and grits, and the cheesecake. I came here to celebrate my birthday and was treated absolutely terribly! After being seated in a spot near the door, we asked Dan (the server that sat us) to be moved as there would be people walking past us. We were then told by our "waiter" Ky? that this was the only table available outside, and that the only option would be to move inside. I found that odd as moments before, Dan went inside to ask if we could be moved. Dan eventually emerged and showed us to our new table (which was in his section). All was good!! (I really appreciated the seclusion from the other guests) Only one thing bothered me, there was no covered seating on the section of the patio we were sat at. It was practically unbearable! We could hardly read the menu as we were blinded by the sun. Understanding that we were asking a bit much to be moved again, we could not stand the sun beaming on the menu and reflecting into our eyes. We then asked to be moved again (It took me a lot to ask this, as I hate being burdensome), and we got our original table. I expressed to the manager Kayla that I did not want the same waiter. (I think I confused her as she thought I was talking about Dan NOT Ky) Reasons why I did not want Ky as a waiter: - 1st: Ky was eating breakfast when he approached our table. Chewing food and everything! Unprofessionalism at its finest! - 2nd: He told us they did not have any other table for outdoor seating, however management found us alternate seating. When this happened, HE EXCLAIMED "WELL I'm not the Maitre' D." Sir, why are you speaking prematurely on things that you have no knowledge of? - 3rd: When we were moved again, I told him that I requested a different waiter, and he let me have it. He practically scolded me and "This is my section". After this encounter, I tried to walk around him and enter the restaurant to get management and HE WOULD NOT BUDGE!! In the past few months that I have frequented this place I have always received stellar service. Jeremy, my usual waiter was not working this day. Kayla was the manager on this particular day and treated me like I was a liar, and dismissed my experience as if my feelings were invalid. I feel like I was treated poorly by management. After explaining the second situation with Ky, Kayla still refused to give us another waiter. I explained to her how he spoke to me, to which she did not believe me. She literally said "He would not do that". I let her know that we did not have a problem with the table (we accepted the table), I just did not feel comfortable with Ky as our waiter! She then scolded me and embarrassed me in front of customers waiting to be seated. "LISTEN I am NOT letting another waiter in his section". Just Wow! In her defense, she did agree to move us once more. We then received the service we should have received from the beginning. Brady was the perfect waiter! Someone expressed my sentiment to the General Manager Warren, who came to our table and sincerely apologized! He also assured me that the problems we had with the waiter would be addressed. He (also Brady, and the view of the Potomac) is the only reason why I decided to stay. Long story short, I felt threatened and bullied. A day that was special to me was absolutely ruined. can definitely say that I will never visit this establishment again! Warren was great, but I'm not a masochist! The view and ambiance is very beautiful. The food was decent but not extraordinary or remarkable. My Lobster Roll and Deviled Eggs were good, but the Shrimp & Grita lacked flavor. Our server, Katelyn, was nice and helpful. The manager/owner on the hand, was very combative, unfriendly, unaccommodating, and was in need of customer service and customer care training. One of the members of our party, the Birthday Girl's mother, didn't want the martini she was served because it wasn't served in the correct glass, which seemed smaller. She politely asked the server to take it back, it was not touched, and then replace it with a Long Island Iced Tea. The server took the martini back without issue. A few minutes later, the manager comes over and says to our mother, "I checked the drink you returned and it was made correctly. Since it wasn't an error on our part, we are going to have to charge half price for the drink whether you keep it or not. It's our policy, which is posted on the website and our menus." When it came to the bill, we asked if we could split the bill by the individual. We were told that was against their policy, which we know they can do because you cans enter orders by the individual (I was shown the POS by the server, and I worked as a server and in the restaurant industry for 10 years). We decided as a group that one of us would pay for the bill in its entirety and everyone would send money to that person, because the manager/owner made sure to tell us we couldn't have individual checks out of concern of payment, a very insulting comment to make to people who are spending $700 at your establishment. I asked for her to print the bill and give it to me for review and to tell our folks what they owe to the person who was paying on our behalf. While I was making that request, she is over talking me and continuing to say it's not our policy to allow split checks. Eventually, I had to ask the server to not send the manager over to our table for the rest of our time in there establishment. I found Cafe 44 on Yelp when looking for a restaurant on the river that wasn't directly in the busy King Street area. I was a little skeptical when I pulled up to the place, since it seems to be in a random large office building - but don't let that scare you off! When I got out of the elevator on the 4th floor and entered the restaurant, I was excited to find a trendy, exciting restaurant with a great view. It seems like a place that you need a reservation for, though I was able to get in since I was dining alone on a work trip. The view is amazing and is the highlight of this place. 5 stars The food was decent, but the menu is relatively small (and different than on their website but that is ok). The linguine was good. Side of lobster was ok. 3 stars Service. Though the service person was very nice and I understand the possibility of being short staffed our waters were never refilled. I had a cocktail and would have gotten a second but service was slow and was worries about the time a cocktail may take to arrive so I ordered a glass of wine with dinner instead. My friend chose this restaurant for brunch because we were visiting the area. The menu looked good so we made reservations. The restaurant is in a suite located in the rear of the building on the fourth floor. The cafe is decorated nicely with modern decor. You have the option of dining inside or sitting on the patio overlooking the Potomac River. We chose to eat outside because there is a great view and the umbrellas on our table blocked some of the sun. While we were dining multiple airplanes flew over our head several times during our brunch. Music was playing in the background while we dined. Our waiter, Tony, acknowledged us not too long after we were seated & came over sometime later to take our drink orders. We all ordered water but Tony took an extended period of time to bring out our water. Tony stopped by our table on the way to give another table their check and he tried to answer questions about the menu but he did not bring our waters with him. When he brought the water we had already decided on food so we asked if we could just order then. My friend had some questions about the menu that Tony was unsure of and he said that he had to ask about. I ordered the cafe breakfast that consists of grits, a biscuit, eggs and a meat (I chose bacon.) The eggs were not good so I did not eat them and the grits and bacon were ok. Unfortunately the biscuit was not soft and kind of dry. The biscuit was served with butter and compote. We sat around for an extended period of time waiting for drink refills and our bills but Tony never came so my friend went to ask for them. After being asked for our bills and more water Tony took a long time to bring out the bills and the water. Once you get past the "There's a restaurant in this random office building?" and "Why are there so many colors in this parking garage?" you realize you've stumbled upon a hidden gem! Café 44 boasts enviable views of the Potomac River, allowing you to see over into Maryland. We had a great outdoor table and it was a perfect day outside. They also had heaters, which were nice because it started to get a bit chilly toward the end of our time (we stayed and enjoyed this place for four hours!). I had a work reunion with some of my favorite colleagues after 14 months of pandemic-induced distance. We had a wonderful time here. Our server was awesome; she had them make me a custom cocktail that checked all the boxes with the limited guidance I gave her. We started with the quatro formaggi flatbread, which quickly disappeared. The pesto on the pizza was a nice touch (I'm a sucker for good pesto). I had the bison pasta for my main, and the noodles were cooked perfectly and the sauce carried a nice spice with it. I also enjoyed the panna cotta. They have a wide array of reasonably priced cocktails, plus nicer than normal happy hour spirits that I think were only $5. I really wanted the key lime pie but they were out. The lobster bisque had a nice flavor but wasn't presented with care. What a great time we had at a late brunch today, celebrating a friend's birthday! We arrived a bit early for our 3 pm reservation but we were seated right away. Our waiter Kai knew the assignment and got bevies started as soon as we sat down. The view of the water was nice, despite it being a gray and blustery day. We had the biscuits with honey butter (So light and fluffy), shrimp and grits, garden truffle flatbread, and lobster roll. They were all delicious but my favorite was the flatbread. It was a big serving! We had the French toast bread pudding for dessert and it was decadent! You cannot come here and not try it! Finally, I have to tell you that we had the best waiter. My girlfriends and I wanted to have a nice Friday evening dinner and drinks together and thought cafe 44 would be a great scene for it. Randomly situated in a corporate building you're taken to a cute open bar and restaurant scene on the fourth floor and a nice covered balcony area with tables surrounding outside of the restaurant. This is where the cuteness ends. The server was God awful and made it real clear he did NOT want to be there. I asked him for a Michelada and he looked at me like I was crazy. Dude, you could just say let me ask the bar? I settled for a spicy margarita which was fine. He forgot my friend's tea (mistakes happen). He kind of rushed us to order, and I settled for a salad with seared ahi tuna. The most underwhelming salad with seared ahi tuna I've had. And the server's grubby hands being inside my plate handing it to me and the faux tree knocking some of my salad off the plate didn't help. This was all fine until he comes out about an hour later and is trying to RUSH us out. Electronic register and all in his hands. They then proceed to turn off the heat lamps on us and boy was it cold outside. When we finally get the check he's overcharged my friend and has an attitude about having to change it. He rudely hovered over each of us as we're trying to tip and sign. He finally brought out my friends tea at the end when I had asked for one, no apology no reimbursement. Overall, if it wasn't for the good company, I would give this place a 1. On a side note I'm a huge fan of temp and symptom checks during these COVID times. There was a couple sitting next to us and the woman next to us had a horrible cough, and not the typical allergy or smoker cough. Went for Alexandria Restaurant Week and I must say the food was delicious Everyone was nice and courteous. Please bring proof of vaccination because you will be asked to show proof. I was kinda of surprised I was asked but I was prepared to show it. I did not know this restaurant existed and it was hard to get to in my opinion because I did not see any signs on the outside for directions. I went at night and it was snowing so I was visibly impaired... slightly. I did call the restaurant and directed to park inside the parking deck. I followed the signs for bldg 44 and found it. This experience was less than something to be desired. I had extremely high expectations, but found that the customer service was what brought down the experience. We made a reservation for a friend's birthday because we had a large group. My friend had to pay a deposit in order to book this. When I arrived, the friend was visibly frustrated and told me that staff didn't have our table ready and was giving him a hard time about sitting together. We ended up having to split into two tables so I wasn't able to sit with the person I came to celebrate. I just felt like they weren't prepared for our arrival at all. The waiting staff and food were the redeeming factors for this visit. Our waiter was extremely nice and willing to help us. He went above and beyond to make our experience special, given the circumstances. I went with an espresso martini for my breakfast beverage and it was absolutely delicious, not to mention aesthetically pleasing to look at. There are some great photo op spots between table set up, the outdoor area, and the faux grass along the wall. For breakfast, I went with the three course prix fixe. My first course was the biscuit and it was delicious. I loved the jam that it came with. My lobster roll was so good, it left my mouth watering. The cold lobster paired with the dressing was perfect. Just the right amount of sauce with the meat. I also liked the chips on the side, great pairing. The brûléed cheesecake was one of the most delicious desserts I've ever tried. The food alone could bring me back. However, I was disappointed in the wait times for food. Half the group got their food and was almost finished before the other half was served. This inconsistency made it difficult for us to finish on time together and left us waiting a while for the rest of our party to eat before we could leave. Maybe it was just a tough day for the FOH and BOH staff, but I'm cautiously optimistic I'd try this place again since it's a little far for me to get to. read more

This is great little spot! The outdoor seating area has a very nice view and plenty of shade. Our server was knowledgeable of the menu and was able to recommend some great items to order. He was friendly and quick to bring us whatever was needed. The inside decor is nicely done and has an area for large groups. The bar has plenty of seating and is spacious enough to eat there as well. Before I write my review, I want to single a particular food runner/hostess who was tall, dressed in black, had long blonde hair.. this woman made a rude annoyed gesture when she walked away after we told her we requested one of the cakes to have a candle on it for my friend's birthday. An older server of asian decent also started his with a condescending tone when I expressed confusion with the restaurant week menu and the brunch menu. I have to admit I was a little skeptical about Café 44 based on some Yelp and tik tok reviews about the food lacking flavor. Regardless, I always like to try things myself before passing judgement. I'll start with the ambiance - it's definitely Instagram worthy. Not my typical brunch place but I would bring my mom and aunts here for a family friendly cute vibe. The decor is very modern, clean and bright. The have indoor seating as well as outdoor covered and uncovered. Honestly you get a nice view no matter where you sit. It was extremely humid the day that I went so we opted for indoor seating. Our waiter, Kai, made the visit that much more pleasant! He was very knowledgeable on the menu items and so kind to us. He made us feel very welcomed. We decided to go with the 3 course prefix menu for $35 which was a steal! For the first course I ordered the lobster bisque with 3 oz. Much like the reviews said it was lacking in flavor but the added meat did take it up a notch. I was starving so I cleared my bowl and sat patiently for the next course. For my main course I ordered the shrimp and grits. 10/10 for flavor and portion! The grits were so creamy and cheesy, the shrimp was seasoned to perfection. Now the star of the show was definitely the dessert! I decided to get the Affogato (my first ever) and my roommate went with the crème brûlée cheesecake. Both were absolutely delicious! Honestly that might have been the best cheesecake I've had in my life (sorry mom). Overall this meal just kept getting better with each course. This place is in a very unassuming office building on the 4th floor. I walked here with a friend and it was slightly confusing but quickly found it! Highly recommend making reservations in advance for the patio seating or the view from inside wouldn't be as great. We were sat in a timely manner and ordered cocktails and appetizers. Our appetizer (burrata) came out faster than our cocktails which was weird but overall the service was good. I had the shrimp and grits which was awesome! I'm from the south and have high expectations of southern food but the grits were creamy and the poached egg was perfectly cooked. I did dock one star because there was literally a SWARM of gnats above our table which we had to keep swatting away. Guess you have to sacrifice that for the view. Also they do have heat lamps in certain spots outside so that's a bonus! read more

I went for dinner and drinks on a Friday night during COVID. The service was, meh. I think they were super busy that night, but I'm not sure why since there was limited seating. I ordered the Lady Jane which was absolutely amazing. They do have a great cocktail list! I paired it with the Ahi Tuna salad which was equally delish. Their menu is a bit expensive, so I would recommend this place for a special night or event. Their location is super odd, it's in a corporate office building on the second or third floor (I can't remember.) so, it's very unassuming.
