While taking a break from the DC area, we enjoy going to Alexandria to get seafood and not pay DC prices. This trip brought us to The Fish Market, as we have tried several other places over the decades. The place is much larger than it looks and has indoor, outdoor, upstairs, and bar area seating. We were seated immediately, and our server was the sweetest lady but not really conversational when we asked questions about the area or the meal. She had no other tables but might not be her personality, which is fine. Knowing we wanted ice cream, we declined drinks, but the bar and its menu were pretty extensive. When we ordered, we landed on the fresh fish tacos and one of the best seafood linguines I've ever had. The sauce was light and didn't puddle at the bottom and was served with scallops, white fish, mussels, and shrimp. The fresh broccoli and grated Parmesan topped off an incredible choice of pasta! At the end of the day, we will continue to try other places in Old Town, but as long as they have that pasta dish, The Fish Market will always be in the running for a return trip! read more

We dined at The Fish Market on 3/21/26 and were promptly seated as a party of three. After ordering drinks and placing our entrée orders, we waited over 40 minutes without receiving our meals. Since we were seated upstairs, I went downstairs to find a manager and inquire about the delay. When the manager, who I later learned was Johnathan, came over, I explained that we had been waiting nearly 45 minutes and asked if there was an issue. His response was simply, "Yeah, the salmon, right? I just dropped it off," before walking away--without any apology or acknowledgment of the delay. He also never returned to check on us. I do want to note that our server, Angel, was polite and apologetic throughout the experience, which we appreciated. Unfortunately, the service has declined significantly over the past two years, and this experience reflected that. With so many great seafood options in Alexandria, we won't be returning. read more

My friends and I decided to grab a bite to eat after our bike ride. We freshened up, changed clothes, then decided to pedal our bikes to dinner versus 4 separate vehicles paying for garage parking. Lots of options, but we landed at Fish Market. It was my first time visiting but my homies went on & on about the HH deals and peel & eat shrimp. We arrived around 5:30. It was a nice warm evening & Fish Market has a descent sized outdoor dining area where we could keep an eye on our bikes & people watch. However, the server informed us that we could only take advantage of HH specials inside. Me: Why can't we take advantage of the HH specials out here again? That's the policy. You must be inside, but you guys can leave your bikes out here & go inside. We all started laughing & respectfully declined. We ordered several items but didn't go crazy since we had to ride our bikes back. We shared mozzarella sticks that were huge & had a nice crunch on the outside. My boyfriend and I checked Fish Market out on a whim as we looked for restaurants surrounding King Street. We went in a little after 7 pm, and were immediately seated. They have a good selection of seafood and pasta dishes. I was torn between the Cacciucco and the shrimp po boy. The waitress told me both were really good choices, but she would recommend the po boy. I took her recommendation, and got it with sweet potato fries as a side. I also had the clam chowder to start. My boyfriend had the salmon with rice and rainbow carrots. The food came out in a decent amount of time. I loved the clam chowder. It was creamy, hearty, and a nice size to start. Then, the po boy was full of shrimp, ripe tomatoes, and crispy lettuce. The fries were really good and I couldn't finish them because the sandwich itself was very filling. The calamari was tasty, the only con is I wish they had Asian Chili sauce instead of the spicy mayo and salsa offered. For the main entree, I ordered the Seaside Pasta. I honestly was underestimating how filling it would be but I had more than enough to take home and it was super tasty! We started off with a dozen of their local oysters ($32) and they were so good, we ordered another dozen. I usually prefer a smaller, brinier oyster, but these were so sweet and bite size. The reason for 3 STARS instead of 5 is for the service. The Fish Sandwich itself was 4 stars- the only thing wrong was it was kind of bland. (I didn't get a chance to further explain before Jimmy snatched them from my plate!) When eating steak fries, you can eat the lightly browned soft ones OR the dark colored crunchy fries: I received the latter. To be fair, Jim began the interaction with me as so helpful and friendly while explaining the menu. That friendly side disappeared and a cold pissed off one remained. So let me get this straight, it is okay for staff here to treat people with disdain when they inquire about their food??? Granted I ordered food in the bar section, but shouldn't mean the service is less understanding or attentive than the restaurant side. As far as the ambiance; there were MANY regulars... Went to fish market today. I had lowered my review because of the menu change. Today, I asked for fish to be made like it used to be. They accommodated and made it with broccoli and asparagus. Visited this spot on a Friday for an early evening dinner. It was not too crowded and they had outdoor seating. The inside is a bit dark, but it is a casual seafood restaurant. It is situated in Old Town which walkable and quaint in and of itself. Be mindful that parking is horrendous in this colonial built part of the city. I hate leaving negative reviews, but this was by far the worst service I've had in Old Town. Service started off fine, then completely fell apart once we were ready to order. We were ignored for over an hour, and when staff finally interacted with us, they were openly rude and sarcastic. When a dish came out wrong, instead of fixing it or clarifying, we were told, "What? You forgot what you ordered?" in a condescending tone. Closing out our tab was the final straw. One staff member told us he was "going to take his time" with the bill and did exactly that, continuing to make sarcastic comments. We eventually had to walk to the bar to pay--only to be met with the same attitude. Slow service is one thing. Intentionally rude service is another. Friday date night, Old Town Va. I'm actually closer to the National Harbor but there's just something about strolling through the streets of Old Town. I love the feel, the ambiance the calmness. We didn't wanna drive an Annapolis () because I was in the mood for seafood. So we decided on this spot. I've actually been here several times. They weren't busy and I see why. I believe that the quality of the service and the quality of the product / food should be equal to make my dining experience optimal. Our food was great. Not shown, the Crab Dip and the Seafood Stew. Both were delicious and full of flavor. My crab stuffed shrimp were perfectly cooked, asparagus was crunchy not over done and the potatoes were seasoned very well. He opted for the Anchor Burger which had two patties medium well and a salad which was huge and very fresh. The only disappointment here was the service. Although the dining wasn't busy ( maybe 2 other tables of patrons) our server was attentive at all. Several of the waitstaff seemed to be gathered chatting at the hostess area. I actually had to ask her to find him so that we could get beverages and the check. Overall, we had a decent time/lunch during our quick visit to Alexander. While we were not blown away by the food (probably due to our own specific preferences), the food was decent. Also, you get a good of food for the price. Some may think the food might be up there in price...until you see how much food is on the plate. For instance, if you are starvation mode, I highly recommend the Cacciucco which comes chopped full of clams, mussels, shrimp and calamari over a HUGE serving of linguini. You'll definately get a bang for your buck with this dish. We also tried the Grilled Pulpo (octopus), which was fine, but we were not a fan of the Asian-style sauce that accompanied the pulpo. While I'm more of a fan octopus with olive oil and a little salt and paprika, the dish was no bad...it just was not my cup of tea. I thought the crab dip was absolutely AMAZING with just the right of crab meat and seasoning. Also, the dip arrived piping hot to the table, which is always an A+ in my book. Although the inside of the restaurant and bar was a bit dark for me, I really enjoyed sitting in the large outdoor area. I was a bit upset with myself to learn that the restaurant has some outdoor seating on the second floor; however, I'm sure one probably has to make a reservation for those seat way in advance. On a cold December night, I just was looking for comfort food and ordered two of my favorite dishes -- Lobster Bisque, and Fried Clam Strips. Both were delicious. I think there was some roasted red pepper and the bisque because later that evening, I seem to have the 'burps' throughout the night. But it was worth it!
