After misjudging the walking distance from a coffeehouse named Beans and Bagels, my friend and I found ourselves on a mile trek to this little hole in the wall- located next to a 7-11 in a shopping center the size of a modern Mcdonalds. Going into Cafe Bueno, you think... I hope appearances are a bit deceiving. The decorations are a little outdated, and the furniture and atmosphere isn't anything to Yelp about. So you order a Veggie Quesadilla for your appetizer and you begin to find out why this shoebox restaurant has 98 reviews and 4.5 stars and isn't even among the walking traffic in Downtown Frederick. Perfectly seasoned, perfectly cooked, served with an adequate amount of sour cream and a pico with a bit of zip. Going on to have the fish tacos is surely a delight. Again, simple and presentation is understated... but then you bite into the tender fish with the cilantro aioli? salsa? pesto? and you discover a wonderful marriage that excites the palate and draws the sound of Mmmm. Al pastor tacos are quite good. A bit heavy on the pineapple for me, but that's just preference. The rice, perfectly cooked- light, airy, seasoned well, delicate, fluffy, orange spongy bits of savoriness. The refried beans follow suit. Service is quick, friendly, and approachable. Im surprised so many people consider this the best Mexican in Frederick. The only thing you can taste on the tacos is cilantro and onion, no seasoning whatsoever. The rice is so overcooked and bland.. i dont mind being charged for chips and salsa but when im being charged for it and then not given it.. anyway it was a first time. Once we saw the name included "Bueno", we had to go out of love and respect for our nephew who I won't name here. Our visit was definitely fun but the food was a bit on the bland side to be kind. Thank gosh they had four kinds of hot sauce to kick everything up a notch or ten. The homemade hibiscus and tamarind Horchata drinks was delicious! We enjoyed them! Upon entered the parking lot, we noticed this strip mall restaurant was conveniently located next to both a liquor store and laundromat. Get hammered and have some tacos while your clothes get clean. How convenient! We did notice that every patron was Caucasian. In fact, the only latinos we saw were working there. Perhaps that's why the food was a bit muted. Decided to try Cafe Bueno for Cinco De Mayo. The usual big chains were booked up. So we hit CB at 6:20p and got a table for two. Actually the table with a view of the fast action kitchen. We ordered the Burrito Bueno and the Enchilada Special. Soooooo can you say Olé , Olé , Olé, Olé they rock the the best Mexican Food Today and everyday. It was awesome, the flavor's were spot on, true Mexican cooking at its best. Then I spied a drink I had to have! Horchetta is the name and home made, it's insane! This traditional drink is made with milk, rice, cinnamon, spices and is the best thing going. After we devoured the meal we were asked if we wanted dessert. When We hit Churro and three milk cake we had to dig in. Glad we did because the dessert matched the meal and was delicious! I highly recommend Cafe Bueno for your Mexican food fix. The service is excellent, and very helpful. The portions are ample and the price per person is very, very reasonable. Corona update: This place still is the best north of the Mason-Dixon Line!! Grabbed a massive bag of food for 6 people. I got home and realized I live alone, so I crushed a lot of tasty food!! Some beef Mexican taco's ( yes there is a huge difference between Taco Bell and actual Mexican food ) people dying from covid all around and I'm fat dumb and happy with my tacos and enchiladas and so on. This place has the best Mexican food I've tried since moving away from Texas. I highly recommend the shrimp fajitas and a margarita, can't go wrong! This is a little hole-in-the-wall restaurant in Frederick. They have several different traditional dishes available. I had decided on tacos! An order of tacos comes with three, but you don't get to select different meats. You only get one type of meat with each order (which kind of sucks). A lot of other taco places I've been to lets you select different meats. In addition, there were two options for the style of your tacos, American or Mexican. The American version has a hard shell or soft tortilla with lettuce, sour cream and tomatoes. The Mexican version comes in a tortilla with cilantro, onions and lime on the side. I ordered the Al Pastor meat in a Mexican style. The meat was absolutely delicious, however the toppings were kind of lacking. One of my tacos barely had any toppings on it. I also wanted to try the horchata, but unfortunately they were out. I would definitely come back though. The food was absolutely delicious! Service was average. I was there the other night. I got steak tacos. They were awesome. Service was fast and friendly. It was all outside seating right now for this COVID hoax. But there was plenty of tables spaced out for social distancing. You had to wear a mask to go in but after you were seat you could take it off. I highly recommend giving it a try. The flavors and service of the old location returned to the new larger spot- after some transitional challenges I'm sure.The complementary chips and salsa started a satisfying visit as the salsa had excellent balance of ingredients with a mild level of heat(ask for the Habanero version at your own risk) Tacos Al Pastor and a Burrito that has deservedly won awards were the center pieces of our visit and they came out fresh, flavorful, served at the right temperature. Wait staff seemed on point, dishes arrived promptly and with visual appeal, and appetites were pleasingly satisfied. Can it get more better? I had been to the original Café Bueno several times and enjoyed all of their cuisine and great service. When I learned they had moved to a different location I wasn't surprised to see it packed full with a waiting list. It's a great Mexican food stop and the service is above board. I ordered the fish tacos which unfortunately on the menu didn't describe them as being breaded. And with a gluten allergy it was not until it arrived at the table when we realized that I couldn't have it. However without a second glance they immediately went back to the kitchen and grilled the fish for me, and the taco was amazing! Whenever I travel east of the Mississippi, I always find that my satisfaction with "authentic" Mexican decreases the further away from the border you get so I was a bit wary when I came in. However, my experience was solid.... Cafe Bueno is a cheerful little Strip mall eatery,kind of a hole in the wall, but serves up a bustling lunch business! The flavor profile exceeded my expectations in some ways. Picante flavor is not going to be a problem here-I was served no less than five salsas or pico de gallo's with my meal, all flavorful and something was super spicy! So flavor was great! Sad news: no avacado or guacamole..... I ordered the chicken fajita lunch portion and it was the perfect size, served with three corn tortillas, and a very small portion of rice and beans. They were just fine. What I wished I'd ordered was the exotic tropical fajitas which is served in a gigantic half of a pineapple. The neighbors got that and it looked spectacular! A great little place. My vegetarian daughter was in town so we need a place with some options for her. We had never been here so we gave it a try. I had the Beef and Chorizo tacos, my daughter had the Grilled Veg Burrito, and my wife a Chicken Quesadillas. All the food was delicious. My tacos, the chorizo added a nice spice to the grilled beef, I added the rice and bean. Beans were NOT gross mashed "refried beans" that a lot of places serve but actual beans cooked until creamy. Rice was fluffy and flavorful I'd like to tell you something about our server...but I'm not really sure which of the wait staff was "ours". Different people came over to make sure we got our drink order in. Anyone walking past our table that saw a water glass half empty refilled. It was like we had 3 or 4 staff taking care of us. This is hands down the best Mexican food in Frederick. The only thing keeping La Paz and Taco Daddy afloat are their locations and drinks. This is BY FAR the best Mexican food I've had since moving here from Southern California (close to the boarder). My kids are half Mexican so they grew up learning how to make great traditional Mexican foods from their Abuela. Cafe Bueno has moved down the street to 255 E. 4th Street. It's right at the corner of 4th and Frederick road. The new space is much larger. It is handicapped accessible and has plenty of parking. They have daily food and drink specials. The new location also has a small bar and they now serve Margaritas. They also have TV in the little bar area. The food and service is still top notch and friendly. I went for take out this past Friday and the food was ready super fast. I had a margarita on the rocks, while I waited and it was yummy. The staff behind the counter was really friendly. When I walked in, around 3:30 it was just me, but by the time I left around 4, they had already seated several tables. They don't take reservations, but if you call ahead, they'll try to be mindful of a larger party coming. We'll definitely have to try the seated service at the new location. Food was bueno, service could be mas bueno. Visited Cafe Bueno at the new 4th St. location the day after Christmas, for dinner. We were ahead of what turned out to be a huge rush of dinner folks -- we sat immediately, but when we left an hour later, the line went out the door. We've been to the smaller location once, and this is our first time since they moved. We don't get what people are raving about. The food was good enough, but there are so many places you can get good-enough Mexican or Tex-Mex around here. They might have a more authentic Mexican menu than some places, as they apparently offer tongue and tripe as specials (not for me though). Seems to me the in-person menu was more limited than what's shown on the website. I looked for chiles rellenos, my favorite, and they were nowhere to be found. I also lean toward good old combination plates, which they don't have here. So mi mujer and I ordered some jalapeno poppers, a shrimp quesadilla for her, and a burrito mixto (beef and chicken) for me. The complimentary chips are heavier than most, and don't seem that fresh (maybe I'm spoiled by other places with thin, crunchy, warm chips). The three bottles of house made hot sauce are nice, and I used all three (the hot is very hot). The poppers were good, and we thought the entrees were decent. My burrito was very big, with tasty ingredients, though the Mexican rice and refried beans were overcooked and average. More concerning was the difficulty in getting our server's attention. Though we were seated quickly, and got our order in without too much delay, we didn't see our waitress much (and really didn't seem to "belong" to a specific server, which is fine unless you're wanting a little attention). By the time we were ready for leftovers boxes and the check, it was getting frustrating. Three or four people were hustling back and forth past our booth, but we were left waiting a while. (Not dinging the specific server for this, as in our experience it's often a staffing or organizational issue.) So the food wasn't bad, and they seem friendly, but lacked service. The decor is nice, with lots of pretty Mexican motifs on the booth backs and tables. The parking seemed a little sparse. Pricing was pretty good -- we spent $36 before tip. I'll try Cafe Bueno again. We have been frequenting Cafe Bueno for over a year now, and I can't believe I haven't written a review! This is THE place for Mexican food in Frederick. All the food is delicious. I tend to switch it up a lot, but Hubs sticks to the steak tacos, which he loves. My favorites are the steak nachos, chicken fajitas, and the shrimp tostadas (which were on the specials menu and just got taken off ). This past time I tried a new special- the pina fajitas. Chicken, shrimp, chorizo, and veggies with pineapple- what more could you ask for? Definitely picture-worthy! They recently started serving bottled beer, and they have an extensive selection. There are also quite a few Mexican sodas and other beverages, as well as yummy desserts. The tres leches cake is unbelievable and it calls to me every time we go! Service is quick and friendly.
