Food - 10/10 It was really good. I was so hungry though that I didn't take any pics. Sorry! I had the barbacoa breakfast plate and that was really good. Tender meat, great potatoes as well as great refried beans. Service - 8/10 Our sever was on the slow side and it also took over 30mins to get our food which we weren't the happiest about. We came here for brunch during our visit to galveston and really enjoyed it!! The food took a bit to come out but it was to be expected since it was a busy weekend, but they gave us chips and salsa during the wait which were yummy!! I believe they serve breakfast all day and after 11am they also offer their lunch/dinner menu. We ordered the chorizo omelette, the chilaquiles with the carne adobada, and the churro pancakes!! My favorite was the churro pancake -- it was saauur good!! Its chewy and surprisingly not as sweet as i expected it to be, and we ordered it as a pancake plate so it came with 3 bfast sausages on the side. I also really liked the carne adobada chilaquiles!! This was a fantastic find on 61st Street near our hotel. We had to walk past the old cemetery and through a neighborhood to get here, but it was so worth it. Scarlet was great in getting us acquainted with this hidden gem. Everything is homemade and tasty. The décor and ambiance inside is very nice. There were Christmas decorations as well. She brought us complimentary chips and 2 kinds of salsa (green and red). We don't usually eat all the chips, but these were exceptionally good as well as the dipping sauces. The chips were served fresh & warm. The star of the show were the quesabirrias and enchiladas. These were so very tasty. My husband selected 1 chicken and 2 beef enchiladas. There's a choice of 3 fillings. He absolutely loved it. He even commented about how good the rice and refried beans were as side items. The meat was tender & delicious. It didn't taste like anything out of a crock pot. Thank goodness for that! We could taste every ingredient. The quesabirrias were just as delicious, and very large portions for the price. It comes with consomé and this delicious & spicy creamy avocado sauce. All the flavors blended well together. The birria meat was so delicious. I could go on and on about this meal, but the pictures speak volumes about our experience here. This is definitely the place to go if you're looking for more authentic Mexican flavors without being at a "hole in the wall" restaurant, or a food truck. It's in a strip mall, but don't let that deter you. It's apparently popular with the locals and has recently expanded. I just wish we would have returned a second time. The menu has so many items that look unique. Hopefully we'll get to try more of it in the future. read more

Pros: Server was very sweet. Got a table fast. Kind of a cute little restaurant. Super cheap which is great. Free chips at the table with some salsa options. Cons: bathroom is pretty gross. Food took quite a while (only got eggs and bacon). They ran out of cutlery? We got plastic cutlery instead, but my little package had just a spoon and a fork and a napkin, and my girlfriends was a spoon and a knife, no napkin. So 1 napkin, 2 plastic spoons, 1 plastic knife and 1 plastic fork? Very odd. Overall cheap but slow. Food is basically what you get at a hotel breakfast. Let me start by saying my family and I eat A LOT of Mexican food of all types. This is hands down one of those places I will tell everyone about when they ask how our vacation was! The salsa was warm and had the best flavor. The chips were fresh-made and perfect. When I asked about the mole enchiladas, they brought me some sauce to sample. (It was also delicious) The beans are wonderful and made with actual lard. The tortillas are some of the best I've had. Fresh and chewy. Just perfect! The atmosphere is vibrant and welcoming. The SALSAS though, let's talked about the salsas. The green and red were both incredible (my 1yo son loved them) but when we got the spicy adobo, we both ate it with every bite from then on. Café Canela Restaurant in a little strip mall off Seawall Blvd in Galveston is one of those bright, family-run Mexican spots that just puts you in a good mood the minute you walk in. Colorful walls, upbeat music, super-friendly staff, and the smell of fresh tortillas and cinnamon everywhere. We started with the café de olla served in the traditional clay pot. Fair warning: it is intensely sweet--like someone dissolved an entire piloncillo cone in there. If you have a serious sweet tooth you'll love it; I ended up chasing every sip with water. The complimentary red and green salsas were fresh and chunky but completely mild--no heat at all, even after I asked if they had anything spicier (they didn't). Spice addicts, pack your own bottle. Portions are massive and very shareable. We got the chilaquiles verdes with eggs and barely put a dent in it splitting between two people. The tortilla chips stayed crisp, the salsa verde had nice tang, chicken was tender, and it came loaded with crema, queso fresco, and onions. Perfectly decent plate of chilaquiles and great hangover food, but I've had more flavorful versions in Houston and San Antonio--just a little under-seasoned for my taste. All in all, solid 4 stars. Great prices, huge portions, warm service, and a happy neighborhood vibe. I'd absolutely come back (especially with a group so we can split plates), but next time I'm skipping the café de olla and bringing my own hot sauce. read more

Our first time experience, The wife's Chilaquiles were amazingly tasty, full of flavor from Mexico. We got both green and red sauce over them along with two over medium eggs, black beans and tasty potatoes. I ordered the enmoladas (chicken enchiladas with mole sauce over them) along with black beans and rice. The taste is authentic south of the border. The service is impeccable!
