I've given this restaurant 5 times and each time has been worse than the previous. Normally I wouldn't give a place 5 whole times, but I had to each time because the person I was with swore they were great. Sadly each time they have been the worst restaurant I've been to in the area! Each time consisted of the worst service of any restaurant I've ever been to! I had to get up and hunt down water, and even the check. The patio is overwrought with offensive smells ranging from the propane heaters (whether they are on or not!) to a decaying dead animal in the fireplace area. It was my best friend's birthday and she insisted that she loves the place so I reluctantly agreed to take her there. I made a reservation and told them that it's her birthday and this is her place of choice. We ordered and it took 45 minutes to get our food. We were downright loosing weight by the time it came. After 20 minutes of not seeing anyone who worked there I had to get up and hunt someone down to check on what is going on with our food. They said that they decided to BAKE her fish! YUCK! When it finally came out, like I said a full 45 minutes later, it was inedible! It smelled like last week's fish and it was so small that it didn't take up even 1/4 of the giant bread ciabatta roll. But good thing for the roll because that was the only thing I did eat there. For $20 I do expect a fresh piece of fish and one that is a regular portion size. Not to mention at a restaurant I do expect to be served. Come on, they didn't even give us water, forget about a refill. This was indeed my last time there. You are now forewarned. Gross watery salad entrees and over oxidized wine. The gnocchi was a $22+ dish fiance was looking forward to and was awful - soggy, heavy, cheap ingredients used for the playdough tasting dumplings. Their "local balsamic vinegar" is a young, excessively sugary and syrupy vinegar. It is extremely off-putting and ruined the bread experience which was the only thing they did okay. Waiter wasn't terrible but continually asked questions in a manner that rushed our "meal" and urged us to leave sooner than we would have. This wasn't hard to do as most of the food we didn't even eat. We self bagged the food left over then donated it to a homeless person there on 41st. Never going back and I suggest you never go. The greater Santa Cruz area is inundated with a profuse variety of delicious food and world class service. This is far from one of them. Even for a cheap meal this restaurant is terrible. The price is far from a realistic quality control. Management needs to overhaul the cheap resourcing for half their ingredients where they count and understand their own menu & selectively hire and train kitchen staff in a manner that food being served is tangible as an impressive or even satisfactory introduction to a friend, loved one, or partially enjoyable meal. This has now been our 'go to' place when we travel over the hill. Food is fresh and we absolutely LOVE their artichoke hearts and crispy beets. Our last visit we had their chicken sandwich and burger. Both were cooked perfectly. Service is attentive which is always appreciated. Mud pie is great! Our waitress Andrea spoiled us; they didn't have cherries for my wife's cheese plate so she brought out fresh strawberries to make it right! Been coming here since 2004. Service has been always been acceptable or better. The service is fast enough for lunch break from work. It's never been a stellar place but good enough and cute. The parking has always been terribly tight. However, I've recommended the restaurant to neighbors and friends many times over the years. But in recent times, either the salad came with vegetable leaves that were brown at the edges or borderline soggy and slightly over dressed. I got a butt if the vegetable stem last time. So today's special was penne with Bolognese meat sauce & cheese, so I decided to give the salads a break. Flavor was acceptable and the steamed broccoli was fresh enough but then there was a metal shard of some sort in my left over penne. Luckily I spat it out right away. I was disgusted and almost hurt my mouth. I think they are getting sloppy and careless. I'm so sad but I have no desire to ever go back. read more

We hit up the Cruz again two nights ago and this time a bit later so this huge restaurant was nearly full. It was happening here with a private party on the faux terrace (very cool) covered with vines and lights and the rest of the place bustling with servers and diners. This time I ordered the Skirt Steak served with Fettuccine in a Creamy Gorgonzola Alfredo Sauce. I was please with my skirt steak, it's not easy to serve them tender. I ordered medium rare, more on the rare side... lovely. Seasoned to a T. The fettuccine on the other hand was solid (not oily like many Alfredos) but very rich and creamy (the way it is supposed to be). Too creamy for me. I try not to review a local restaurant until I've had several meals there, especially when the first experience is not a good one. I had the opposite experience with Cafe Cruz -- several good experiences and then tonight a bad one. And even tonight wasn't all bad -- even though our waitress was a good one and offered good menu advice, she managed to forget the bring the wine we ordered, and 35 minutes after we'd ordered, someone showed up with our entrees. Oops! And there's more. I had ordered a side of green beans, which arrived nearly raw and lacking any flavor. Waitress says "no problem," I'll have them cooked soft. Five minutes later, a side plate of nearly raw, tasteless green beans arrived. And there's the noise. It was a Tuesday night, so the dining area was a bit more than half full. A table of a dozen or so was seated across the room, and often got so loud that my wife and I couldn't hear each other seated across the table from each other. That dining room is all hard surfaces, but there's a separate dining room where that noisy crowd could have been seated. But they weren't. And the restaurant could have put some sound absorbing panels to cool out the noise. But they didn't. We ordered a side of greens and grits to share, which my wife has enjoyed a lot on other visits. This time the serving was tiny and both greens and grits were sorta dead. I ordered a side of greens that were nicely cooked, but the serving was also tiny -- it could have filled no more than two tablespoons. On the positive side, my entree, a nice white fish that seemed to have been lightly breaded and pan fried, was pretty good. When it finally arrived, the wine we ordered (by the glass) nearly 40 minutes before were a generous pour, and were nice. The menu is heavily tilted to meat -- my wife, who eats fish but not meat, finds little to eat here. There are rarely more than two fish dishes on the menu, and only one or two vegetarian. And it's hard for a vegetarian to be happy with a kitchen that can't even get greens and green beans right? This time around, she was so bummed by the service and the noise that she said "never again." Wine and beer selection is pretty good. The parking lot is tiny for the size of the restaurant, so most customers must park in the lot across the highway for the shopping center. read more

Our party of 7, had dinner last night at the Cafe Cruz Rosticceria & Bar...as we have for several years during the month of July, visiting Santa Cruz. 3 in our party ordered the filet mignon, including myself. We were so disappointed!! We all ordered our steaks "medium", which is still suppose to be mildly pink....they were all way over cooked and dry. We talked about sending them back, but had waited so long for our dinner to get to us, we decided against it. My husband had the ribs and said that there was very little meat on them. The wine top notch. It seemed like it was going to be a great evening until the food arrived. Tacos were tasteless. Salmon was ok-nothing outstanding . Same with gnocchi. Don't want to burst the bubble here, but I have to be very honest. The overall experience was mediocre comfort food-like at very high prices. I will not return given the many better options in the Santa Cruz area. Now the service and atmoshphere was very nice, but I still am able only to give it 2 stars from me, which is a message to any Yelper of NOT RECOMMENDED. The restaurant is located in a congested area just off 41st Street. Parking is very tough, and during busy times, the recommendation to park across the street at Home Depot is a good one. Only about 4 parking spaces in the front, and the parking lot in the back is shared by several others. Once inside we were greeted, and asked to sit outside in the green patio area. This is a nice place among about 6 different parts of the restaurant. It is very casual. The chairs are the green plastic variety. The green area is walled off in vines, and is secluded. It has 6 tables. There is an adjacent larger patio area, and the inside seems to have several different sections. There is the bar area where you can watch the food being made, a front dining room, a mid dining room and back dining room. All different. My recommendation, if you go, is when you enter, enter from the rear, and check out all the places. Pick one you like, and when you get to the hostess, just ask her for seating in your preferred area. Once seated we were greeted by the server, a very gracious young lady. Drinks and the calamari appetizers were ordered. The calamari came out with two sauces (red and white). The taste was not so good. It had way too much breading, and was oily. Not the light and crisp calamari I was expecting from the signature appetizer. Entrees ordered were the fresh salmon over vegetables, and the shrimp pasta dish. The salmon was very tasty and the vegetables very fresh. Note: entree price of $24.95. The shrimp pasta was a big dissappointment. Note: entree price of $19.95. I had to send the dish back because the shrimp were not completely cooked. Ugh!. The server was gracious, but the delay did not make for a nice meal. It came back, and the shrimp were cooked ok. The mix of shrimp, pasta and linguine was just fine, nothing special. (Note: the best place of all for this type of dish is Cafe Fina on the wharf in Monterey). So, on to dessert. We split the mocha mud pie. Again, nondescript, and looked/tasted like it came from Costco. The tables are very casual, and the food mediocre comfort food. That said, the prices are way out of line for the type of food served. For this type of pricing, one would expect nicer tables, linen tablecloths and gourmet tasty food. Not here. They have salads and rotisserie chicken. The half chicken is priced at $16.95! You have got to be kidding for a half chicken! Our tab with tip was just under $100. We read the reviews and were intrigued by them. We were originally going to go to the Shadowbrook , but the reviews kept us away. Too bad..used to be a great restaurant. Anyhoo......we were blown away by Cafe Cruz. We were seated right away for our party of 6. Our waiter, Jeff, was attentive, informative, funny, but not a noodge. That alone scores points. They have this amazing artisan bread with the olive oil and balsamic BUT they also have small portions of garlic puree to add to your olive oil balsamic mixture for bread dipping. YUM!!! Very fresh garlic enough to put a bite on your tongue. We ordered the Fess Parker Syrah..( only $28 bucks a bottle) and it was an excellent compliment. Appetizer's opted for the Tomato Stack.....a high stack of Delicious heirloom tomato slices with mozzarella fresh basil and a sinful pesto sauce that was to die for. The stack was inexpensive and fed 3 hungry people. Entree....I had the St Louis Ribs ( Wed is rib nite) the meat fell off the bone..just the way God intended. I told her that I had just called and spoke with someone who told me I didn't need a reservation. "Well I'm the only one who answers the phone here" was her reply. We immediately left and went to Michael's on Main which had a bar menu and great food and service. Cafe Cruz needs to start saying "yes" instead of "no" in these situations. We were looking for an interesting lunch stop for our family of five around Aptos, and found Cruz on Yelp. Driving up I was a little dismayed by the freeway-onramp-side location and weird parking, but I'm glad we stuck with the plan, as it turned out to be a lovely meal. First off, the space is much bigger than it looks from the exterior. Inside is spacious with several dining areas; we sat on the cute patio. It's surrounded by the building, so I never noticed any freeway noise. I ate the Blackened Fish Salad, which was plenty of lunch and which I'd get again. My wife had a Nicoise Salad from the specials and said nice things too. My 11 year old son got the Smoked Turkey Melt. It was huge and he struggled to eat more than half. My 9 and 7 ordered off the kids menu, which delivered lots of food (and pretty high quality looking) for the price. read more

This place desperately wants to be a fine dining establishment and fails miserably. Food is made with a heavy hand with no real flavor other than salt or cream. We made the mistake of coming on a Sat night with no ressie, but given the high Yelp rating and packed house, we figured it was worth the 40 minute wait. Wrong! The food isn't bad per se, but it's completely unrefined and tries too hard. They also overlooked my child's pasta and drowned it in marinara. Talk about adding insult to injury. My good buddy Chase made reservations here at the last minute for his grad dinner. And I'm very glad for two reasons: 1) It was spontaneous, which I always like no matter what. I'm not much of a planner, so when I see that other people are sometimes like this, it fills me with joy. 2) This place is actually quite good. According to the menu/other yelpers, this place is known for their rotisserie chicken. So I ordered the honey-baked version with a side of polenta and chilled artichoke. The chicken itself was decent. Juicy, tender, but not as flavorful as I thought it would be. Still good though. The polenta was phenomenal. Imagine if you took the best slice of cheese pizza ever made...and mashed it into a more mashed-potato-like consistency. Some of you may think that it sounds gross but...it's quite delicious. The chilled artichoke was also very good. It complimented the entire dish very well. What REALLY should be advertised are their pork chops! My friend Derrick ordered them as his dish. And upon trying a piece he cut for me...I immediately grow envious of him. Tender, moist, flavorful...it was probably the best pork chop I've ever had in a restaurant. No joke. The ambiance is quite nice (you won't be able to tell from the outside; you'll actually have to walk inside) and the staff here is extremely friendly. I believe our waiter's name was Scott. I should have went with his recommendation for the chops. Next time, Scott. Next time... If you're in the area, give it a shot! This place hasn't changed too much over the years and that's OK! Ambiance is the dressy, yet casual feel. Casual attire on the customers' part anyway. Saw some 20 something's walking around in sweats and slides. Servers are dressed up with button up (or down?) shirts and give a very professional air about them. They still have paper table cloths (great for drawing with the crayons provided). They still have the olive oil and raw garlic to eat with your bread (literally my favorite part of the whole meal). They're still known for their rotisserie chicken. Salads can be huge. Food is good. Only came here since I had a gift certificate since I've been on a budget, personally. Otherwise, we would've spent more than we wanted to for 2 glasses of wine, one salad and one special dish - the pork shoulder. There is a serious lack of top dining establishments in Santa Cruz when this relatively mediocre restuarent consistently gets 5 stars from happy customers. Or else the level of food education among the customers is low. The menu is eclectic without any particular strong themes. The wine list is remarkably limited to a few good midrange wines. The service was rough hewn but very good. But the reason to come to a restuarent is ultimately to eat. I had the 3 peice sampler meal. The crabcake was very good, the chop was a bit on the leatherly side and the chicken was, well large. The artichoke was really chilled, I mean toothchillingly cold and the risotto tasted like lumpy porridge. Once upon a time, the space we know and love as Café Cruz, was known and loved by our parents as Grape Steak. In fact, this is fairly obvious as, after a decade of business, the street sign above Café Cruz still reads Grape Steak; perhaps as homage to the restaurant where diners would come to roast their own steaks in the brick ovens, now used by Café Cruz as mood setting fireplaces. That ends your history lesson kiddies - fast forwarding again to present times, Café Cruz stands as one of Santa Cruz's best New American restaurants. When I go home to visit, I tend to suffer from restaurant withdrawal, and the only thing my dear parents can do to lift my spirits is take me to lunch or dinner (I prefer their lunch menu) at Café Cruz and stuff me with skirt steak salad - or skirt steak pasta if I'm feeling particularly down. Also noteworthy, are their fish sandwiches, which constantly change to reflect whatever happens to be fresh. The undeniable all star on that team is the calamari steak sandwich - mayonnaise, capers, fresh veggies, on an onion roll - classic but to die for. With a nice wine menu and fabulous deserts - be sure to stay for the mud pie - you can take your time and enjoy your meal on the gazebo or by one of the two fireplaces, courtesy of Grape Steak. Parking is a huge bitch, so if you can't find any spaces behind the restaurant, just park in Home Depots lot across the street. Once you get inside, you're treated to a nice decore and friendly staff. I didn't make a reservation so my gf and I sat at the bar and ended up eating there to watch the Giants game. The bar staff was outstanding: very attentive, friendly, and talkative but not "chatty". I had the pork chops and my gf had the crabs cakes, which I tried. We were sandy and dirty and tired when we looked up a great dinner spot on Yelp before heading back to San Jose. I can say, it's the most impressive Yelp recommendation I've had in years. Five stars for five highlights: 1. You must have the rotisserie chicken. It is amazing and the cornerstone of the restaurants. Beyond good -- great. 2. They took six of us at prime seating time and although we had separate tables (kids vs grownups), they treated our kids like gold, even serving their food very quickly and treating them with rare respect. Good thing we have such well mannered kids. 3. The ambience brings out the best in Santa Cruz. By the time I'm done with a day in SC, I'm completely over the hippie vibe. Cafe Cruz has a local, hometown feel, but steps it up with class. 4. Wait staff is on.it. Water, tea, hot water, another glass of wine, more bread, sparkling water... you name it, they were on it. I almost never give 20% anymore since wait staff sucks in the summertime, but the staff was great. 5. Indoor and outdoor seating was fantastic. The restaurant is HUGE inside, made up into smaller, more intimate rooms, and bustling even on a Sunday night. The waiters were all very knowledgeable and friendly, even knowing what kind of Balsamic vinegar was used with the bread AND wrot down where we could buy it in town before we left! The food was amazing ... we had the grilled boneless pork chops & the BBQ ribs... both were delicious. The first time I dined here, it was on a recommendation. My roommates told me that a quick tasty dinner would be found at Cafe Cruz. The name, Cafe, is a misnomer. CC is anything but your typical "cafe". I was expecting a small cozy nook that offered panini and other cafe fare. My friends and I were quite surprised to find a full service "nice" restaurant. Think of Cafe Cruz as the Santa Cruz answer to San Francisco's Zuni Cafe, without being as upscale or trendy. A full chicken rotisserie, excellent menu options and wine pairings, and genuinely good food. The few times I've been, I've left completely satisfied. Take, for example, last night. The NYG and I came in and perused the menu. We placed an order of Calamari and our server had it out to us before we'd even finished our bread. we'd barely finished our Calamari when our food came out. The chicken was really really good. Alas, I've been tainted by Zuni Cafe in terms of my expectations for the best chicken ever, but this was pretty close. The clientle of CC was definitely on the older side. The NYG and I were the youngest people dining at CC by 10 years, easily. We split our chicken and shared the appetizer for about $30. Not a bad deal at all. As a bonus, we left full. Sometimes splitting food leaves people kind of hungry at the end of a meal. This wasn't the case here. As a final note, I would say their dessert menu was truly lacking in both originality and flair. CC would do well to hire themselves a pastry chef, or at least consult with one. Mud pie, creme brulee, tiramisu, and cheesecake are not only uninspired, but that combination of offerings makes it clear that desserts aren't made in house, but purchased from someplace else. Hmmm. -1 Star here. TIPS: - If you can, find someone to split the chicken with. Budget friendly, and still as filling as ordering your own full entree. - If you want a glass of water with your meal, you have to ask. But the food was quite disappointing, the rotisserie chicken was undercooked and tough; still had pink juices in it and you couldn't get the meat off the bone, obviously taken off the roaster too early. Two of the shrimp I had were "mushy" and about made me gag. I was there as a guest and didn't mention these things to the restaurant host, as I didn't want to disturb the general good times. Our circle of family gathered from around the state, had a sadly disappointing lunch here recently, on a week day. Service was lackluster, bordering on grumpy and unwelcoming. Our food dishes were substandard and forgettable. We gathered family here to celebrate the 95th birthday of our elderly mother, who loves a good steak. We sat up front instead of out back in the sunny patio. We were the only customers in the front portion. Our server said nothing to welcome our special guest, throughout the meal. We were a bother, it seemed. I do love a freshly tossed Caesar salad but my so-called Caesar salad came drenched in a bottled dressing of low quality - yech - not freshly prepared and tossed, in fact, barely edible - beware! Our guest's steak came, first under done, then over done, and tough. One of us ordered the Santa Fe salad which was romaine lettuce with a couple of black beans and few little strands of cheese - she left hungry. We left with a bad taste in our mouths,too, and will not come back. This restaurant was focused on the bar and on the drinks, and not the food anymore. read more
